Trust and integrity – our two core values. For the past 5 years our experts & users have reviewed hundreds of VPNs. Our reviews are never influenced by the industry. We sometimes earn affiliate commissions, which contribute to our fight for a free internet. Click here to find out more.

Google Chromecast is a low cost and easy to use the dongle that allows you to stream video and audio content from your desktop computer or mobile device to your big-screen TV. This content can be streamed from internet services such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Spotify, or can be streamed from files stored locally on your device.

Best VPN for Chromecast

Using a VPN with Chromecast allows you to access content that is restricted to certain countries from anywhere in the world, and to “cast” it to a big screen TV. We in no way condone copyright infringement, but we are aware that users of apps such as Popcorn Time can cast streamed content to Chromecast in privacy.

Our Thoughts

ExpressVPN provides a world-leading VPN service. Key to this is superb customer relations, which includes a genuine, no-quibble, 30-day money-back guarantee and 24/7 live chat support.

This focus on user-friendliness can also be seen in the design of ExpressVPN’s apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and routers. These are very simple to use, yet hide powerful VPN features. These include a firewall-based kill switch, DNS leak protection, and superb OpenVPN encryption.

Additional features: three simultaneous connections, DNS leak and WebRTC leak protection, great OpenVPN encryption with perfect forward secrecy.

  • 30-day money-back guarantee

  • Good for P2P downloading

Perfect for use in China. If you're living, working or just passing by, make sure you use the nearby HK servers to unblock content and bypass the great firewall.

Unlike other VPNs, Express VPN's interface is extremely user frendly. I was new to VPNs and was able to figure this one out immidiately.

Having trouble with Netflix? Just open a chatbox and they'll direct you to the right server. Trust me, it still works.

Used purevpn and it was a joke! Every time I logged onto one of their sites, I ran at least 5 leak tests! Every time it showed my internet provider included in the results! So much for security. Also, whenever I downloaded anything, my firewall went nuts blocking intrusions! Spent a total of 16 hours with them trying to resolve dns leaks & nothing worked! Express VPN is sooooooo sweet, no leaks, fast downloads & my firewall has no intrusion blocks! I've already had 2 warnings from my internet provider regarding downloads using pure VPN. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

NordVPN is undoubtedly a very fully-featured service. The fact that it is based in Panama and keeps no logs at all is also a big draw for those who care about privacy. Its software looks good, and works well. Speed performance is now very impressive.

NordVPN permits torrenting, works with all major streaming services (including US Netflix and BBC iPlayer), and has servers in 58 countries. It even throws in a full smart DNS service for free! What you get with NordVPN is a very fully featured, privacy-friendly VPN service that is also very fast.

I 100% agree with your award to their customer support. They were so friendly and giving clear steps how take all needed tests and set up my router which I found quite difficult (I got scared seeing all those terms that I did not know in my router set up section) but NordVPN people were so nice and patient.

NordVPN works great. A lot servers work with p2p, lots of servers to choose from in general. I am a long time user, but have never before shown my appreciation for the service properly. It sure does make me feel safe online, and I guess that is what matters the most - if you trust your service. During these 2 years I have been in contact with customer support a few times and their care and knowledge made me feel at ease even if I was worried. The fact that new app updates and whole new features are being published so often proves that NordVPN is serious about their commitment to their customers.

Of course it is my first VPN, but after getting in contact with customer support I am quite sure I am here to stay - their technical expertise is simply mind blowing, right now I am convinced they could set up VPN on my toaster if I wanted, the only question I have is will it work with IKEv2 or only PPTP!

I'm a new NordVPN user. After years of dealing with another VPN provider customer support for many issues, I was very impressed with the short time it took to respond to my questions for NordVPN. Customer care is just excellent, and can't say anything bad about speed - it's just a few percent decrease.

I can say that I have not noticed any meaningful performance degradation at all with NordVPN and its nice to have the added security. I use it on my iphone as well (up to 6 devices). The only downside is that some sites will detect that you are on a different PC each time you log in (like financial sites) so you have to go through additional verification. This is due to the IP address rotation. I definitely recommend NordVPN

CyberGhost‘s software is easy-to-use while also being very fully featured. It uses very strong encryption, and 5 simultaneous connections is generous. Being based in Romania and keeping no meaningful logs is also a big draw, and compliments the fact that it accepts payment in Bitcoin.

CyberGhost’s excellent logging policy, fantastic speeds, and fully featured software are a winning combination. And with a 7-day free premium trial plus 30-day no-quibble money back guarantee, there is zero reason not to give it a whirl.

Cyberghost is not good tried for their 7 day trial, when installed said it had expired. I Mentioned this to Support Team, and they told me that happens if i installed on my pc before, which i havent even been with the vpn provider idiots. Cut long story short i brought this vpn for $11.95 the software took 35 seconds to come on desktop and connecting to server took 45 seconds to connect mostly said server cant connect even though tried servers in my own country n said coudn't connect, now going through process having my money back as it within 30 day period. Conclusion: would i recommend them, i certainly would not recommend them at all. Support useless, Software is slow to load (even tho i have a quad core pc 16gb ram) and servers took forever to connect. only positive is there features and they dont keep logs, but i defo wont be going with them again 🙁

Our Thoughts

Our IPVanish review found that the service delivers very high speeds. It achieves this great performance because the company fully owns its infrastructure, which was specifically design for VPN traffic. Its network includes servers in 60 countries, which keep no logs. The location of the company's headquarters in the United States worries some privacy specialists, because its management could become vulnerable to legal pressure. However, the no logs policy means that copyright lawyers won't be able to learn anything about your activities. The VPN is available as an app for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, and Android devices and it can be loaded onto DD-WRT and Tomato routers.

Pros

  • Seven-day money-back guarantee

  • Manual installation for Tomato and DD-WRT routers

  • Choice apps for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, and Android

  • Servers 60 countries

  • Allowance of five simultaneous connections

Cons

  • Slow customer support

Tyler

I used IP Vanish for most of 2016, and it is a very good VPN. I liked it much more than ExpressVPN. The Windows & iOS app, and my OS X is great. I used it on all 3 devces. It is US based but it is fast. You can pick fast servers, and you can connect to anything. NETFLIX is known to not be able to allow any VPN, so that's no surprise there, you cannot use TunnelBear, ExpressVPN, NORD or anything with Netflix in the USA, so not being able to use IPVanish either is really no big deal. Just disconnect and watch Netflix. It's secure so it shouldn't matter. Watching Kodi on the other hand, allows VPNs perfectly fine... Someone also mentioned getting your money back if you decide not to use their service, this is also inaccurate. In Jan 2017 I auto-bought a year, but since I changed VPN I needed to get a refund, I was refunded the difference of the time frame I did not use within 3 business days. They are very willing and helpful with refunds. I have had zero issues with IPVanish, their support is responsive and decent, not awesome but it's better than no chat-box support. They will help you figure stuff out, they speak English because they are USA based (unlike ExpressVPN) and they have good connections. I always felt secure using IPVanish.

I try IPvanish this year because offer some good extra as scramble, kill switch, and no data logs. I try ironsok... and I was very happy super fast multiple vpn 3 at time , good dns spoof . IPvanish so so the app on windows is not good and nice as the mac , had issue in speed more than one time and the support says is because is a VPN ( wait a minut but I pay for it premium... btw ) have a real big issue in dns or (location ) Example : used sweden now and it says Amsterdam .... used Singapor it says America .... this is bad for people that need a good location associated by VPN . Also many website or app find that I use a VPN !! gumtree.c o m example etc.. this not happen to me with other services... In general I am 50% satisfied still have one year will see if the services become better.

I'm surprised you have IPVanish as a viable option for Netflix. I subscribed to IPVanish in 2016 mainly to access Netflix US content. It worked for a while then got blocked with the usual "you seem to be using an unblocker or proxy." Tech support were aware of the issue and working on it. After 3 months it was still not resolved. I cancelled my subscription and was able to get a full refund. Maybe they finally figured it out... But like some mentioned, I also had few invoicing glitches that were all resolved by customer support. So one piece of general advice, watch your bills 🙂

I have used most major VPNs as I travel to China regularly. I had to file a dispute myself (I started with Ipvanish in 2014) and am less than impressed with ipvanish billing and support. I do think this is an important factor in a decision to use or renew a VPN and should be factored into reviews. For my purposes IPvanish was no longer doing what was needed effectively and I had a rough cancellation process. The other comments here about their billing do resonate with me and should be a factor in the reviews.

How is it supposed to be super fast when I choose a server near me. Speeds from 180mbps to 18mbps? My 4gLte is faster than this. Don't think 90% speed decrease is worth it.

IPVanish is terrible. Unfortunately, it is absolutely useless in any country you might really want it (China, Oman, UAE, etc.). Basically, any country with restrictions has blocked IPVanish, rendering it completely useless. I've been in touch with their support teams for months and no one has been able to come up with a solution. I asked for a refund but was told that was impossible. This is literally the worst VPN I have tried so far. Not recommended in the slightest.

I had a terrible experience with IPVanish. I canceled after 2 months because the service was too slow and I was unable to use it for the purpose I bought it. They stopped collecting payments and everything seemed fine. Two years later, a mysterious $10/month charge started appearing on my bank statement, from PayPal but with no label indicating it was IPVanish. It took several calls to PayPal to finally figure out I was being charged by IPVanish. It took me a long time to notice this wasn't one of my legitimate subscriptions and I ended up being overcharged $240. I didn't use the service at all during that time. They refused to refund any of the money. I am now taking them to small claims court. BUYER BEWARE.

Read More

Our Thoughts

PIA is much cheaper than the other VPNs on this list, but its server network is relatively small, with servers located in 25 countries. There are apps for Windows, Android, Mac OS X and iOS. Users can select from OpenVPN, Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), and Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) VPN protocols. The best of these is OpenVPN. Unfortunately, this is not available in the iOS implementation. You can install the VPN on computers running Ubuntu, and it can also run on routers with DD-WRT, Tomato, and PfSense operating systems. The network has good speeds, which make it a good choice for streaming and downloading. You get an allowance of five simultaneous connections, so the whole family can enjoy connecting to the internet while you're channeling entertainment to your TV through Chromecast.

I'm in the UK and have tried many VPNs. I find PIA not only meets all my needs but the speeds I get are excellent (5% down on my 200mbps when not on VPN). I don't have any comments relating to support because I've never had to use it but I'm willing to accept the comments of others are true and accurate. As a package I can rate PIA only as I find it and that's pretty good.

I have been a PIA user for years (main reason for staying was the price and features but with all the new entrants it is getting less noteworthy). My biggest gripe is that the customer support is rather terrible. If you ask them anything technical they repeat the same questions and don't appear to read your replies (seem to be following the "support script" asking for extraneous info). I usually figure out the issue myself after wondering why I even bothered to contact them in the first place. The online ticket system doesn't work for me for some reason so I've always had to contact them by email. On the plus side the reliability is pretty high with only the rare drop. Also I like that you can setup various levels of security from strong (256bit AES) to weak (PPTP). Privacy also appears to be very high. I'm going to start shopping around for a new provider though, to see if I can get higher speeds (only get ~30Mbps on a Gig connection with OpenVPN) and better support.

Useless. It was fine for a long time but no longer - the reviewer is out-of-date. Their customer service/response is non-existent and it can no longer be used to access Sky, BBC and the like from overseas. If you check their IP addresses for the two UK server locations in London and Southampton you will see that only the last 2 digits change each time so for someone like BBC they just block all IP addresses using the first three unchanging sets of numbers.

Their support is non-existent. There's no phone support and no chat; you must submit a ticket thru their system. When you submit a ticket, there is a notice that they are experiencing a high load of support requests and will answer you when they come to you in the queue. This notice has been there for months. I needed help and waited over two weeks for them to get back to me. I had solved the problem by then with help from others on the internet. I guess that is what they want--just don't bother their one tech support guy with your little problem. I've spent my last dime with them and will find another provider when my subscription runs out.

Why do I need a VPN for Chromecast?

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is an essential privacy and security tool for all internet connected device. The device you are casting from receives all the normal benefits of running a VPN. This including privacy while surfing the internet and protection from WiFi hackers and accessing streaming content that is usually only available in your country.

You cannot install a VPN app directly onto the Chromecast device itself. Most VPN apps exclude local IP addresses so that you can readily access local resources such as printers, LAN drives… and Chromecast dongles! Or to put this another way: running a VPN on your device does not get in the way of casting to Chromecast. So, all you have to do is fire up your VPN app and connect to a VPN server before you start casting.

Quick view

A VPN for Chromecast allows you to access blocked services and cast them to a big screen where they belong. It will also protect your privacy when casting Popcorn Time content. What’s not to like?
