5 Best Amazon Prime VPN services in 2024

Looking to access content on Amazon Prime Video that's not available in your country? A VPN can help you out! In this guide, we'll reveal the best VPNs for Amazon Prime Video in 2024, as well as how to use them.

Amazon Prime Video is one of the most popular streaming services in the world and it has a bigger content catalog than any other streaming site. However, like its competitors, Amazon Prime's catalog differs depending on where you are accessing it from. This is due to licensing restrictions as production companies only give Amazon the license to show it in specific regions.

By using a VPN with Amazon Prime, you can unblock content that is only available in the USA or elsewhere, giving you even more choice when you're travelling away from home! However, some VPNs won't be able to unblock Amazon Prime Video, and that's because Amazon actively prevents VPN users from doing so. The VPNs listed in this guide are all able to provide reliable access to Amazon Prime Video.

ExpressVPN Demo

ExpressVPN Demo ExpressVPN Demo

ExpressVPN ticks all the right boxes when it comes to unblocking Amazon Prime, no matter where you are in the world or the device you're using. The VPN is easy to use, the apps look great, and your digital privacy is securely safeguarded with top-notch encryption. ExpressVPN is the ultimate all-rounder!

Easy (and speedy) streaming

I consistently recommend ExpressVPN to folks who are looking to unblock geo-restricted content from overseas, and that's primarily because the service has a fantastic network of servers in 94 countries across the globe. This makes it incredibly easy to spoof your location anywhere you choose, and ExpressVPN itself recommends connecting to its servers in the US, UK, or India if you intend to stream Amazon Prime.

You won't need to worry about buffering with ExpressVPN, either. It's a seriously speedy provider that always performs well in our speed tests – and if you're looking for an even quicker connection, you might want to try out the provider's proprietary Lightway protocol. Lightway is, as the name suggests, incredibly lightweight, and can improve connection times by up to 2.5 times!

Security you can count on

ExpressVPN cemented itself as a titan of the VPN industry by combining substantial unblocking power with a full suite of security tools. So, the service can unblock virtually any streaming site you can think of and keep your traffic secure with excellent AES 256-bit encryption. As a result, you won't need to worry about your ISP monitoring your every digital move. I also like that ExpressVPN comes with an automatically enabled kill-switch, that'll cut your internet connection in the event of a VPN dropout, and a split tunneling feature, which is ideal if you want to access geo-restricted content and local sites all at the same time.

Most impressive of all, however, is ExpressVPN's no-logs policy. Not only does this policy clearly state that no user logs, including IP addresses and DNS queries, are ever stored, but it's also been audited by independent professionals. This kind of transparency is exactly why I feel comfortable using the VPN to access geo-restricted content on sites like Amazon Prime. Plus, ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands, beyond the reach of the notoriously invasive EU and US jurisdictions!

An abundance of apps

As I mentioned earlier, it really doesn't matter which device you plan to use to stream Amazon Prime content – ExpressVPN has sleek apps for just about every platform, and is even compatible with Amazon Fire Stick, smart TVs, and consoles. In fact, if you want to stream your favorite shows from a device that doesn't natively support VPNs, you can check out the ExpressVPN Smart DNS service, called MediaStreamer, as an alternative. Just remember that MediaStreamer won't encrypt your connection like a traditional VPN.

Currently, ExpressVPN supports five simultaneous connections – and I'd ultimately like to see the service offer more! We all tend to own multiple internet-enabled devices, and larger households may have way more than five devices that could benefit from a VPN's unblocking powers. However, I still think ExpressVPN is well worth checking out, and you can use its 30-day money-back guarantee to take it for a test drive. For any questions or concerns that crop up, get in touch with the provider's 24/7 customer service team, and they'll point you in the right direction – and will even be able to suggest the best servers to connect to in order to access Amazon Prime!

NordVPN is a privacy focused, and inexpensive, VPN that unblocks Amazon Prime with ease. All in all, it's the best-value-for-money VPN to use with Amazon Prime.

Nord Demo

Nord Demo Nord Demo

NordVPN has become something of a household name in recent years – and for good reason! The well-known service is capable of unblocking all sorts of streaming services, Amazon Prime included, and I was able to unblock Amazon Prime US with a minimum of fuss. If you're new to VPN tech, or on a budget, then NordVPN could be a great match.

No more streaming hiccups

I'm always impressed by the fact that NordVPN has more than 5,200 servers in 60 countries. That's a staggering amount, and users will have no trouble accessing geo-restricted content from all over the globe, no matter how obscure. Currently, NordVPN can unblock Amazon Prime in eight key regions, including the US, UK, France, Canada, and Japan – all you need to do is connect to a server in the corresponding location. Once you have, you'll enjoy smooth HD streaming.

NordVPN eliminates ISP buffering, so you can tune in to your favorite shows at any time of the day, even during rush hour, and its lightning-fast servers are also ideal for P2P downloading and online gaming. In the unlikely event that you cannot unblock Amazon using its normal VPN service, NordVPN actually throws in a full Smart DNS service for free! Plus, its SmartPlay feature combines the best of a traditional VPN and a Smart DNS service, and is implemented by default in all NordVPN apps.

Low-cost, but high-impact, security

NordVPN offers premium security tools and digital protection for an incredibly modest price – especially if you commit to a longer-term subscription. AES 256-bit encryption keeps any third-party snoopers from tracking your online activity, and NordVPN users get an impressive selection of secure protocols to choose from. If you're all about safety, you'll want to stick with OpenVPN, but if you're more focused on optimizing your speed, you should check out NordLynx, a protocol based around the WireGuard protocol that's making waves in the VPN sphere. It's great to see NordVPN offering an automatic (and customizable) kill-switch and obfuscated servers too, however, which will be of particular use to any folks trying to access Amazon Prime from locations with stringent internet restrictions.

As you'd expect from one of our top picks, NordVPN abides by a no-logs policy, and simply isn't interested in keeping hold of your timestamps, IP addresses, or other identifiable information. The VPN has also undertaken an independent audit to prove it. NordVPN is based in Switzerland, and whilst the country isn't the privacy safe haven it used to be, it still remains outside of the EU and US jurisdictions.

Support when you need it

NordVPN gives its users six simultaneous connections to play with – and whilst that's one more than ExpressVPN, it's still not a huge amount, though you'll still probably be able to secure all of your most important gadgets. Fresh-feeling NordVPN apps are available for most devices, including Amazon Fire devices, and the VPN is also compatible with smart TVs and routers. As a result, you'll be able to sit back and enjoy Amazon Prime content wherever you go – even if you're headed abroad! If you are planning a holiday (or if you know you'll be relying on public Wi-Fi hotspots), I'd recommend enabling multi-factor authentication.

This handy option makes your NordVPN account that much more difficult for hackers or opportunistic crooks to crack. You can try NordVPN before taking the plunge with a subscription thanks to its 30-day money-back guarantee. And if you need help getting the VPN set up, or deciding which server to connect to, a customer service team is available 24/7 to help you out via email or live chat.

Surfshark combines speed and unblocking power to ensure smooth HD streaming for Amazon Prime and more! Plus, you get to use it on an unlimited number of devices simultaneously.

Surfshark Demo

Surfshark Demo Surfshark Demo

Surfshark easily takes a bite out of the most stubborn geo-restrictions, and can provide access to Amazon Prime as well as a long list of other in-demand streaming services, like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Hulu! Surfshark apps are easy to use, look fantastic, and are compatible with just about every device out there, too, so you can take your content with you on your travels.

A presence in key locations

Surfshark impresses right out of the gate with a whopping 3,200+ servers in 95+ countries! This makes the service ideal for bypassing restrictions that might otherwise prevent you from tuning in to Amazon Prime or other geo-blocked content. Plus, Surfshark has numerous servers in key locations that are key to unblocking Amazon Prime anywhere in the world, including the US, UK, Canada, India, and Japan.

I also like that Surfshark includes its very own Smart DNS service in every subscription – there are no hidden charges to worry about, here. With the Smart DNS service, you'll be able to stream shows on devices that don't natively support VPNs, like smart TVs, which is perfect for folks planning on jetting away on holiday. A step-by-step guide to configuring the Smart DNS service is included on the Surfshark support site, and I should remind interested parties that Smart DNS services don't come with the same encryption as a VPN, so some user discretion is advised.

Protect your privacy

You're not only getting incredible unblocking power with Surfshark, however. The VPN keeps your traffic info out of the hands of nosey ISPs and governments with AES 256-bit encryption, and OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols sweeten the deal even more! WireGuard is especially useful to anyone who wants to boost their speeds without compromising on security. Users also get access to a kill-switch (that needs switching on via the settings menu) and Double VPN, or Multi-Hop, which routes your connection through two different VPN servers for an added layer of security.

Surfshark makes its home in the British Virgin Islands, which is fantastic news, as there are no mandatory data retention laws to worry about. Plus, Surfshark is a no-logs provider that won't track your digital whereabouts! I'm also glad to see that Surfshark has invited an independent auditing team to comb through its policy – a venture that massively reassures users about the service's commitment to privacy.

Breaking limits

You'll be able to install Surfshark on just about any device you have in the house, and the VPN is also compatible with FireTV and games consoles. More impressively, however, Surfshark offers unlimited simultaneous connections! So, if you own a small army of gadgets you'd like to secure, or if you just want to share your subscription with friends and family, you can do so comfortably, without rationing your connections. There aren't many VPNs out there that give you this kind of value for money at such a modest price point.

Just like the other providers on our list, Surfshark comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, which should give you plenty of time to put the provider through its paces. If you'd rather not part with a penny, a free seven-day trial is available to Android, iOS, and Mac users.

Private Internet Access is a solid provider with a huge network of servers, ideal for unblocking Amazon Prime on holiday. It comes with a court-proven zero-logs policy.

PIA Demo

PIA Demo PIA Demo

Private Internet Access (PIA) is another standout service with subscriptions that don't cost the earth. The VPN is particularly good at unblocking US content libraries, so if you live outside the States and want to keep up with all of the latest Amazon Prime US shows, movies, and more, PIA is a great pick!

US centric streaming

PIA has thousands of servers dotted across the globe in 78 countries – an outstanding feat! This means that no geo-restricted content should ever be out of your reach, no matter your original location, and PIA can successfully unblock Amazon Prime, Netflix, and even BBC iPlayer. However, the service does have a domestic focus in the US, and currently only claims to work with Amazon Prime US – so anyone looking to check out content from elsewhere may need to shop around for a more suitable service.

In addition to servers optimized for streaming, PIA comes with its very own Smart DNS service that's compatible with Android TV Boxes – though you will need to configure it yourself. This process can be a bit techy and off putting to new users, who may also be overwhelmed by just how many advanced security options PIA comes with, but there are handy step-by-step guides available on the PIA site!

Well-balanced and battle-tested

PIA is one of only a handful of services that manages to balance speed and security. I'm especially glad to see that the VPN has upgraded its server network infrastructure, too, making it an even better pick for smooth streaming, online gaming, and other data-intensive tasks. Plus, AES 256-bit encryption ensures that your connection remains private should any third-parties (like your ISP or government) try to take a peek at your traffic. The OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols are available to PIA users, which is just what I like to see, and comprehensive leak protection is the cherry on top of an already appetizing security offering.

With that being said, let's address the elephant in the room – PIA is based in the United States. The US is hardly a privacy paradise, what with the NSA and CIA lurking around, and the ever-looming threat of gag orders and warrants. However, PIA works hard to assuage these concerns with a no-logs policy. So, even if it was served with a warrant, it'd have no user information to hand over! One day in the (hopefully near) future, I'd like to see PIA invest in an independent audit to really reassure users about its commitment to privacy.

Comprehensive coverage

PIA is one of the more generous providers on the market, giving its users ten simultaneous connections to enjoy – as well as apps for all devices, including Android. It only takes a few minutes to get PIA installed and set up, and then you'll be ready to stream Amazon Prime US from just about any gadget you own! The auto-connect feature comes in handy for folks who frequently connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots, and will make sure you stay secure on your commute (or your vacation).

As per the industry standard, PIA users can take advantage of a 30-day money-back guarantee to put the provider through its paces. A 7-day free trial is also available for Android and iOS users! Finally, I'm happy to see that PIA's customer service has vastly improved, and a live chat service is available during business hours in the US.

PrivateVPN Demo

PrivateVPN Demo PrivateVPN Demo

PrivateVPN is a service that has a strong focus on privacy – a fact that probably won't come as a surprise to anyone, given its name. However, considerably more surprising is the VPN's ability to unblock a long list of streaming services! PrivateVPN comes with all the tools you need to make sure that you can tune in to new shows and classic movies on Amazon Prime, all whilst securing your connection.

A fully-featured fledgling

You might be concerned about PrivateVPN's comparatively small pool of servers. Admittedly, other providers we've looked at have more servers in more locations, but 200 servers in 63 countries are still nothing to dismiss out of hand. PrivateVPN is also still an incredibly young service, and one that's already keen to expand its presence!

And despite the smaller profile of the provider, it already outclasses many well-established VPNs when it comes to unblocking streaming services. PrivateVPN can unblock Amazon Prime, as well as Netflix and BBC iPlayer, amongst others, and even comes with a DNS proxy that'll help you access even more content. It's unlikely that you'll need to use this proxy, however – not when PrivateVPN gives users access to dynamic dedicated IP addresses for free! These addresses excel at bypassing VPN restrictions, and are the sort of thing that most VPNs would charge extra for!

Bye-bye buffering

As everyone knows, there's nothing more annoying than finally settling down to watch a favorite show or movie and suddenly being beset by the dreaded buffering circle. With PrivateVPN, this isn't a problem. The service is more than quick enough to go toe-to-toe with the likes to ExpressVPN when it comes to speed, and can handle HD streaming, as well as online gaming and video calls, should the mood strike. PrivateVPN's speeds have actually improved considerably since our last set of tests!

And, as you'd expect from a VPN called PrivateVPN, it doesn't skimp on security. Strong encryption prevents third-party snooping, and it's fantastic to see that the service offers the super secure OpenVPN protocol. PrivateVPN also protects against IPv6 and DNS leaks, and has obfuscated (stealth) servers that are particularly useful to any folks living under a restrictive regime, where accessing geo-blocked content is that much harder.

Put to the test

PrivateVPN is also a no-logs provider, which is just what we like to see, and therefore won't have any information to hand over to authorities who come calling. This policy hasn't yet been backed up by an independent audit, however, and I'd love to see PrivateVPN make the investment. The service is also based in Sweden, which isn't the safest place for a VPN to make its home, thanks to some nasty data retention laws, but PrivateVPN previously informed us that it remains in Sweden in order to retain full access to its central data centre.

Very few VPNs are offering this level of security and unblocking power, and PrivateVPN also boasts six simultaneous connections as well as polished apps for all platforms – Android included. If you'd like to try the VPN for yourself, you've got the choice of making good use of its 30-day money-back guarantee, or a free 7-day trial!

How we test VPNs with Amazon Prime – methodology

At ProPrivacy, we're constantly putting VPNs through their paces – and we've thoroughly tested over 50 VPN services to check if they are able to reliably unblock Amazon Prime.

We're based in the United Kingdom, so our team of researchers connected to VPN servers in the United States to check the service's ability to access The USA's version of Amazon Prime Video. These geo-spoofing tests also allowed us to check out the US content being hidden away from international customers!

Speed is another important factor when it comes to streaming, which is why our team compared internet speeds before and after joining a VPN server, to determine which services have the biggest impact – and which ones can handle HD movie marathons. We also run daily VPN speed tests to get a better idea of what services are the fastest.

The ProPrivacy team has been following, researching, and reporting on the VPN industry since 2013, so we're confident that our top picks for Amazon Prime Video represent the cream of the crop. Plus, these are the services that we use every day, too!

If you have any trouble whilst using one of our recommended VPNs, drop us a message. We always listen to our readers, and your input helps us deliver up-to-date reports about these services.

How to unblock Amazon Prime video?

To unblock Amazon Prime Video content from overseas, you'll need to use a VPN and re-register your Amazon account in the country you'd like to connect to.

It'll still be possible to order goods from your local Amazon site and specify your real delivery address, although we can't say for certain whether these deliveries will be covered by your Prime benefits. If things don't work out, however, it's easy enough to change the country your account is registered in to make sure you get your deliveries via Prime.

If you use an Amazon Fire TV stick (or any other Fire OS device) to access Prime content, then your choice of supported counties is limited. Please see How to change your country on a Fire TV Stick for more details about this.

Follow the steps below to unblock Amazon prime video on your laptop or computer.

  1. Sign in to your account on the Amazon web page and visit Manage Your Content and Devices. You'll find this link under your name and Accounts & Lists.
  2. Click on the Preferences tab.
  3.  Then, go to Country/Region Settings and click Change.
  4. You can then change your Country of Residence to the United States. A valid postal address and zip code are required, which you can obtain by zooming into a random US location on Google Maps (or using an online postcode generator).
  5. Once you're done, hit Update.
  6. Now it's time to pick a VPN provider and download its software. This is a quick and easy process that should only take a minute or two.
  7. Sign in to the VPN app when prompted and select a server located in the country you want to connect to. (Some VPN services offer special Amazon Prime servers!)
  8. Log in to Amazon Prime Video. You may need to confirm your identity via a code sent to an email address or phone number – so be sure to select your email address.
  9. Navigate to the Amazon Prime Video or Amazon Prime Music web pages to find – and watch – the content you want!

How to pay for Amazon Prime US?

To use Amazon Prime US, you may be asked to update your payment details to a method registered in the US. You'll also need to pay for your subscription if you haven't already.

Using a virtual debit card is the best way to do this – especially if you don't already have a US-registered card – and we'd recommend checking out our in-depth guide if you'd like to learn more about how this works.

US Unlocked is by far the easiest way to get a US payment method that comes with a valid US address. US Unlocked gives you the ability to pay for US services from just about anywhere outside of America, and a US Unlocked virtual prepaid card comes with a valid US billing address so that you can pay for Amazon Prime US without a hitch.

Can I use a free VPN with Amazon Prime?

There are lots of free VPNs out there... but that doesn't mean they're worth using. These shady services might not come with a subscription fee, but they'll cost you in other ways by:

  • Implementing weak encryption
  • Hiding behind invasive privacy policies
  • Monitoring and collecting your information
  • Selling your data on to third parties
  • Possibly infecting your device with malware

Free VPNs are not always safe, and can actually do more harm than good – so it's important to be picky about which providers you trust. There are some great free VPNs that we'd recommend, but they won't be suitable for streaming content on Amazon Prime Video.

Trustworthy free VPNs will struggle to unblock Amazon Prime Video, and won't be able to keep up with Amazon's relentless pursuit of blocking IP addresses known to belong to VPN services. And even if you manage to access the site, free VPNs are usually simplified versions of their premium counterparts, designed to give you a taste of the premium service by implementing data, speed, and server restrictions.

If you're looking to stream Amazon Prime's Video and Music catalogs, then using a free VPN can result in buffering, or put a halt to your streaming entirely. The only way you'll get guaranteed access to Prime's full library, minus data and speed restrictions, is with a paid-for VPN service.

A good VPN doesn't have to be expensive, though. We've even put together a list of the very best cheap VPNs that offer a quality service for a budget price. Bear in mind that your mileage may vary with these services, however, as they haven't been tested with Amazon Prime's streaming service. If you want a no-hassle experience, we'd suggest sticking to our hand-picked Amazon Prime Video VPNs.

Can I use a VPN browser extension to unblock Amazon prime?

Some VPNs come with browser extensions for Firefox, Chrome, and Edge, and potentially other browsers, too. These extensions typically exist for one of three primary reasons:

  1. To allow users to control their VPN app from inside their browser.
  2. To work alongside the main VPN client to provide WebRTC blocking and prevent leaks.
  3. To provide a https proxy connection (as opposed to the full VPN tunnel provided by the main app).

If you want to unblock and use Amazon Prime services, such as Prime Video, we recommend that you use the full VPN client. This will allow you to pick servers that have been optimized for streaming on Amazon Prime.

Depending on the VPN you pick, you'll find numerous servers located in the US and around the world, and it's vital that you communicate with your VPN provider (or check within the app itself) to make sure that you're connected to a server that's been optimized for streaming or accessing Amazon Prime Video.

On some occasions, VPN providers may actually recommend that you use the browser proxy instead (or in addition to) the main VPN connection. This can help to spoof the browser's location data to help unblock Amazon Prime. This is rare, and your VPN provider will let you know if you need to do this, so contact them directly if you're in doubt.

If all else fails, you can try experimenting with both the full VPN client and the browser extension to see whether it helps to unblock Prime. That said, most of the time it will be better to connect using the main VPN app as this provides the best connection for streaming content.

Does Amazon Prime block VPN users?

Yes, but Amazon Prime only blocks users if their apparent internet address (IP) is known to belong to a VPN or a proxy service. Fortunately, a number of VPN services, such as the ones listed in this article, offer IP addresses that are not blocked by Amazon.

If you log in to Amazon using just a VPN, however, then Amazon will think you are on holiday. It will allow you to stream movies and TV shows, but only from a greatly reduced catalog. In order to access the full catalog for the country you're "spoofing,” you will need to re-register your home location with Amazon.

US residents who are already registered in the US, of course, need only use a VPN to access the full Prime US catalog when traveling abroad.

What can you unblock with a VPN for Amazon Prime?

Prime customers in the US enjoy access to far more Amazon Prime Video content than users elsewhere in the world, though customers in the UK and Canada also have extensive libraries. Check out the totals per country in the table below.

Diff. with Amazon US

[[post-object type="accordion" question="How many Amazon Prime users are there in 2024?" answer="There are over 200 million estimated Amazon Prime subscribers in 2024. The company didn't reveal the exact number of its paid users, but in 2021 it stated that <a href='https://techjury.net/blog/amazon-prime-statistics/#gref'>the number has passed 200 million</a>, making it the second most popular streaming platform in the world, after Netflix.

to get Amazon to work while using a VPN, Either use "Streaming Optimized" Servers like PIA VPN offers this is proven to work. or if you using Nord change the protocol to OpenVPN (TCP) and then test each server type like Obfuscated servers, and find one that works.

Amazon Prime is blocking my ExpressVPN which I paid the monthly fee for based on reviews like yours. Affiliate marketer or not - stop spreading disinformation...or at least say that "maybe" it won't block you, maybe it will.

Hi Sasha. To use Amazon Prime in a different country you need to re-register your Amazon account in that country. I successfully did this with ExpressVPN in the US quite recently. Note that this works when accessing Amazon Prime via your browser, but a Firestick or similar uses other means to determine your true location.

I got ExpressVPN yesterday to use with Amazon Prime, and it worked! Now this morning (the next day) it's not. I've tried multiply locations and all seems to be identified as proxies and won't play the video. What VPN works with Amazon Prime?

Hi Jonas, First contact ExpressVPN's support team. It is very likely they are already working on a solution. The other VPNs listed above should work, but please be aware this is a cat-and-mouse game.

This is late December 2017. I have tried 2 VPNs and contacted a third. The first one I installed claimed UK Amazon Prime availability in France but didn't actually provide that access from the go-get. I contacted another who advertised Amazon Prime availability but when quizzed said they couldn't do it - something about Amazon being more aggressive these days. The third VPN claimed they could get Amazon ..... and they did for 1 evening. Amazon quickly closed the connection. 2 days later the VPN regained access to Amazon for 1 afternoon before Amazon shut it down. The larger point is "Do VPNs really work?". If Amazon, Netflix and even my insurance company can see I am using a VPN, what's the point?

Hi vic, Whether or not VPNs are being blocked by Amazon Prime is a cat-and-mouse game, and it does seem that Amazon is being more aggressive with its blocking at the moment. On the larger point, please see our VPNs for Beginners guide for how VPNs work, including a discussion on what they can and cannot be expected to do. Websites will always be able to see the IP address you connect from. If that website knows the IP address belongs to a VPN service, it can block it. Your real IP is still hidden from that website, your ISP (and governmnet) still don't know what you get up to online, and WiFi hackers will still be unable to access your data. Most good VPNs usually find a way around these geo-blocks (for example by refreshing their IP stores or using fancy DNS routing), but as I say, it is a cat-and-mouse game.
