  1. يقول Richard :

    Hello Douglas,
I went with NordVPN a few months ago when it was your #1 recommendation. But now I see that you have completely removed it from your recommendations here. This makes me a bit worried. Did you find out something about Nord to make you remove it? Do you still consider it to be a safe VPN?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

No, we are still very happy with NordVPN. It has actually asked to come off our lists while we renegotiate how to create a revenue stream with it. As you probably know, we do run an affiliate system. The beauty of being the most established VPN review company is that we don’t need to be biased when we recommend VPNs. All VPNs are willing to pay us affiliate fees, which means that we can be truthful about which VPNs we recommend. We do not, however, have the power to keep adding a VPN to lists if they ask us not to put them on our lists: which is the slightly bizarre situation we are in at the moment. However, this is probably only temporary and we are still in discussions with NordVPN.

  2. يقول Jonathan J. :

I recently was researching which VPN would be the best for me and it came down to Express and Nord. I decided to try both and got Express and NordVPN’s trial. With both I also hit a speed bump but it was less than 30% off my speed, nothing unusual or odd. I liked that both have kill switches and allow torrenting. I had a bit better speeds with Nord when streaming. When it came down to buying the service, I chose Nord. The main problem I had with Express was the price, not to mention that I had to refund because they don’t have a free trial.
Either way, thanks for these lists and for doing good work, appreciate it

  3. يقول Holden McGroin :

Unfortunately I cannot trust your judgment. Why? There are no cons in each provider’s description. Are they all so perfect? I doubt that! If you give someone 10/10, you should list all the criteria being fulfilled but you do not do that. You recommend CyberGhost for not placing data cap. Does ExpressVPN place a data cap? You did not say it doesn’t. Is this a criterion in your evaluation.
About Private internet access VPN. This is a fraudulent thing by my personal experience with them. I was their client for a couple of months when I noticed repeating monthly charges on my credit card every couple of days for a total of 7 and after trying to contact them, the phone number was out of service. I couldn’t even log into my account. I had to call the credit card and dispute those charges.
    So, yeah, your list sucks!

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Holden,

Are you looking at the same page I am? Every provider on this has a con listed (although, admittedly, PrivayeVPN’s says not much because there really is very little to complain about). All I can say is that experience of PIA has always been very positive, and it recently proved its no logs claims in court.

  4. يقول SiriusMac :

I totally concur that ExpressVPN is hands down is the best. I see NordVPN didn’t even make the top 5 cut and I agree with that too. When I tried NordVPN it killed by speed by up to 70% and with ExpressVPN I only took about 30% hit in speed, which I can live with. I worked with NordVPN in an effort to resolve the speed issue and they couldn’t fix it. Yet ExpressVPN worked right out of the gate with no speed issues. ExpressVPN is not cheap, but they off a great service with build in kill switch. Overall I am very happy with the service and highly recommend it over all the others.

  5. يقول Josh Cave :

A few days ago I bought cyber: netflix did not work for me, the download speeds were slow and I also experienced leaks when testing the service. I had to change my DNS settings to manual, because it would not change when it was set on automatic.
Still, I asked for a refund and bought PIA instead

    1. يقول Atoz :

      “Cyber” meaning CyberGhost, yes?

Was getting your refund any trouble? How long did you have the service before requesting it?

      Thanks!

  6. يقول David :

I have been using VPN.ac for over two years and I’m completely satisfied.

  7. يقول Jan Black :

I’ve used CyberGhost for 3 months but switched to another provider. Cyber worked fine the first month, then started throttling speeds, my connections is over 100mbit/s, but with Cyber it’s less than 10mbit/s. Moreover, there are DNS leaks, and from the reviews on [redacted], it seems that I’m not the only one having problems with their service.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Jan,

The link you gave is to a rival website, so I hope you understand why I redacted it. Looking through the many comments on that link, however,, only 2 mention DNS leaks and are they not very recent. In my recent CyberGhost Review I, certainly, did not detect any IP leaks. Speed test results were not amazing, but are way better than 10Mbits/s – we got 73.5 Mbits/s burst speed, which should be plenty fast enough for most users when connected to a nearby server (18.5 average to servers around the world is indeed a bit meh).

    2. يقول Nile. St. :

I was cautious, yet I bought Cyber recently. I’ve read the comment above and was too paranoid to let it slip. I made the DNS leak test and here you have it https://ibb.co/eJ669c. My DNS servers are set to be obtained automatically, however once I connect to CyberGhost, they do not change. This is not how quality service should behave. You are supposed to be a trusted source and should not be listing such services.
If Cyber won’t give me a refund – I will be sure to come ask you for one 🙂

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi Nile. St.,

Hmm, all I can say is that did not detect any IP leaks. Do those Finland servers belong to your ISP?

    3. يقول Nile. St. :

      Hi Douglas,

Yes, this is my ISP. For some reason, Cyberghost failed to set DNS addresses on my network adapter. Such ‘leak prevention’ method is archaic and unreliable, and harmful to say the least. Ideally, DNS queries should be resolved on a server. You can recreate the said issue. Connect to one of their servers and set DNS on your adapter to be obtained automatically. This poses some serious risk to CyberGhost’s users, as I’m sure I am not the only one affected

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi Nile. St.,

Well, good DNS leak protection uses a firewall to ensure no connections are possible outside the VPN tunnel. So this happens when you reset the DNS adapter settings after connecting to the VPN? I agree that a good firewall DNS leak solution should ensure any such change in DNS settings will prevent your computer from connecting to the new DNS sever, but (in fairness) this is quite a specialized situation.

    4. يقول Nile. St. :

The thing is, I didn’t interfere with an adapter by myself, DNS addresses were simply not set.

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi Nile. St.,

Hmm. All I can say is that my test setup’s DNS settings are also set to Obtain DNS server address automatically, but I did not not encounter this issue. Thanks for sharing your experience, though, as it highlights the need for VPN users to double-check that everything is working as it should. Have you contacted Cyberghost about it?

  8. يقول Kate :

Great review! I’ve been using VPNTunnel for a long time and I like it. I have many VPN server location choices and it is affordable.

  9. يقول SlimChiari :

Hey BestVPN.com team, you are declaring to be unbiased review site, but you are putting in the second place service which is untranslatable with terrible customer service, speed problems. And you’re pushing this service even via live chat! That’s unacceptable. BTW your live chat supporter has dropped chat after I said I won’t buy Cyberghost, but I haven’t mentioned I won’t by any other service. Just don’t understand why you’re promoting CG while you have reputable VPNs like NordVPN or ExpressVPN, even Privet is better

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi SlimChiari,

We are now recommending CyberGhost because it has vastly improved over the last few months (in large part because it wanted to meet the strict standards we require before recommending a VPN on this page). Please see my new CyberGhost Review to understand why we think it now offers a great service. I agree that speed performance is still a bit meh, but it is otherwise now a great and privacy-friendly VPN.

  10. يقول deniz :

can you tell me best encryption vpn? for windows, mac and iOS? sorry i don’t know english

  11. يقول somecolor :

Hello, i would like to say thanks for your efforts.
your honest opinions help many people choosing an appropriate vpn service.

for a country that is a member of the eu, would it be better to choose a vpn provider who is outside the eu?
In such case, what would be your picks (excluding the 14 countries) having a no-logs policy?

    Thanks, i appreciate it.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi somecolor,

Well – it all depends on your threat model. I live in the UK, and after assessing my own threat model I am happy to use a VPN based in an EU country which does require VPN companies to log – for example Netherlands, Sweden or Romania (which is also thought to be free from NSA influence). If your threat model still leaves you concerned about about using a VPN based in the EU, then Hong Kong and Panama (NordVPN) have no data retention laws or meaningful governmnet surveillance programs. Switzerland has traditionally been considered good for online privacy, but new surveillance laws throw this perception into doubt.

  12. يقول Jose Andres :

Read the review and decided to try NordVPN out. Turns out they also have a special deal – only 99 USD for three years. Visit their website and you will see. So far so good, just as stated in the review.

  13. يقول Doc. Mccoy :

Firstly I bought a VPN and only after that I started reading the reviews… Noticed that NordVPN has been noticed here and there, so decided to give it a try – must say I am very happy with it. The help I received from customer support when setting up my router is very appreciated, and I hope they will read this short review.

  14. يقول murquee :

well well, Express VPN again. They must really have good marketers. I monitored several cases of protection drops/leaks last year and in each case their “technical support” told me nope no problem at all. Then this year received a notice from the local ISP that yes they could track my traffic and provided proof. This service is false security. Their ap development has stalled and is far behind the newer security threats. DO NOT TRUST EXPRESS VPN.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi murquee,

We recommend ExpressVPN because it provides an excellent service that, as far as all our tests can determine (and we are quite thorough!), is both reliable and secure. Indeed, it has just open sourced a bunch of advanced tools in order to help improve VPN security across the industry. If you have evidence that this is not the case, then I would be very interested in seeing it.

  15. يقول Mr. Curry :

the f… is buffered? Is it named that way because it is always buffering?

Been using NordVPN, reading around about what everyone’s experience is and does it match mine. So far so good, really love their proxy extensions.

  16. يقول AloneFate :

Personally, I’m impressed with NordVPN and how they improves day by day.
NordVPN has over 2900 servers while ExpressVPN 1700, tested both and got better speed with Nord. All other features are the same so why pay double? Think you should move them to the #1 position.

  17. يقول Jan :

Have you ever known a person who tries too hard to be cute? That’s TunnelBear…with all of the same pitfalls.

Even rudimentary features of TunnelBear feel unfinished because most of the development effort has focused on presenting an image of “cuteness”.

Support is probably the worst aspect of TunnelBear. As expected, the cuteness actually masks mean-spiritedness. When I failed to participate in the cuteness game by contacting TunnelBear about a problem and suggesting how the unfinished features could be improved, TunnelBear responded with a pompous, sactimonious attitude.

In short, TunnelBear needs more substance and less cuteness.

  18. يقول Gaz :

Been using PureVPN for quite a while now and the speeds are normally quite good, even FHD streaming only occasionally has glitches, but then we have a good high-speed cable connection.
Quote “Unfortunately, many services now block VPN users. This includes Netflix and BBC iPlayer” I have been through this problem with Iplayer and US Amazon Prime, but a quick chat to PureVPN and adjusted the settings plus loaded up the browser extension, and all good again. Well for the moment anyway, they will probably find other ways to block services.

  19. يقول iytty :

    Windscribe is the best

  20. يقول That guy :

This website is really corrupt I was talking to Milan and as soon I mentioned that Nord gives highest commission to stay on top, he closed the chat and disabled it to chat again. I mean WOW such a classy act Milan.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi That guy,

I am sorry that you had this experience, and will discuss it with Milan. BestVPN.com does not hide that fact that we make money from affiliate marketing. After all, how else could we afford to run this website and offer the wealth of resources that we do? However… we pride ourselves on our impartiality and regularly recommend services that do work with us (a good example is that we recently awarded AirVN winner of our Best Privacy Award).

  21. يقول iytty :

    what about IPVANISH

  22. يقول iytty :

nordvpn sucks expressvpn is so much better then nordvpn

I voted ibVPN works were ever I am in the world. Can even watch uk tv in china .

  27. يقول John McCorke :

    Thanks for the article.
I have NordVPN and PureVPN and neither works with Netflix or Amazon Prime. I got the impression from the article that all 5 of your choices passed a top-3 streaming test — which I think should mean they stream Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.

Can you confirm which if any of these VPNs pass the “top-3 streaming” test?

I have been attacked through my VPN. It would be great if you could write more about this issue and include it in picking your top-5 or top-10 VPNs?

For example, which of these apps include at least a NAT, which have a more aggressive firewall, and what all features does the firewall support, and not support? Do any also have an anti-(phish, virus, Trojan, rootkit, etc. etc.) as well? It would be great if one of these services integrated a Centripetal Networks device in their system to protect us users. Any VPN that did this would instantly get my business.

I gave up on NordVPN about a year ago. Sometimes it would connect. Often it would not. It was so slow in Malaysia, the link was unusable –like 500bits/sec– no matter what server I tried to use. Because of your rating, I’ll give it another try.

When I switched to PureVPN, I was shocked at how much faster it was, how much more I could count on getting a connection, and how much more stable a connection was–i.e. that it stayed up with no drops for hours at a time. It worked absolutely great in Malaysia. That said, I assume due to more aggressive government hardware, its performance on my more recent trips to Malaysia and Turkey has dropped.

It would be wonderful to see an article that coalesced real experience from travelers across these VPN products to see which are actually robust and work wherever you go.

A problem with PureVPN is that as their desktop software gets updated from version to version, I often find it buggy and have to go back to a version that may not have the latest features, but works reliably. Fortunately, their help desk is exceptionally good, and they are quick to send me an older version that fixes my problem.

Here is a tip — I did a manual configuration to several servers directly in Windows. This method allowed me to set up several standard options that I can just click on, and that include SSTP and IKEv2 connections. Depending on where I am (like an airport, or hotel, or home, or coffee shop etc.) one will work while others don’t. In the end, this “pick and click” known-good setup usually allows me to manage to get a VPN connection when their desktop app fails.

That said, at the Istanbul airport, I could not get PureVPN to connect long enough to be of any use by any method. It would connect, and occasionally it would stay up long enough (~30 seconds) for a browser to connect to google, but it dropped before Office 365 Outlook could connect and retrieve my email. Fortunately, it worked fine at the hotel.

Perhaps you have also noticed this, my experience with doing a with-VPN and without-VPN speed test using sites like speed-test.net, do NOT give results that reflect my “user experience”. I have found both products can give great speed-test answers, yet be dramatically slower to open a web page, or upload or download a file to Dropbox.

Given the above, here is another ask, please, I would wish you would have more real-world usage testing results in future articles.
How long do links stay up?
After several tries, how much longer does it take (worst case, best case, average) to upload and download a big file?
Average, best/worst case, how much longer does it take to get to a sites like amazon.com, google.com, digikey.com, newegg.com, and other big sites?
How responsive is browsing and dealing with email in Office365, outlook.com and gmail.com?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi John,

Thank you are sharing your thoughts and experiences with us.

      – Yes, all these services should work with US Netflix (with ExpressVPN you need to contact support to find out which servers to use). Netfix, however, is a cat-and-mouse game, so expect the occasional hiccup. BestVPN.com is working on a way to automate tests for this so that we can provide a continuously accurate up-date-picture of the situation. Watch this space!

      – Hmm. Personally, I prefer dedicated security solutions. If a VPN provides it own all-in-one solutions we will discuss them in our full reviews. You may want to check out CyberGhost, as both its desktop and mobile apps will block malicious websites, block ads, block online tracking, and force HTTPS were available. Not that an updated CyberGhost review is due to be published soon.

      – NordVPN has invested heavily in its infrastructure this year, and in most cases its device is now much faster than it was.

      – In recent reviews I have started adding average ping results, which should hep with this problem. We are, however, transitioning to a new and robust speed test system which includes a DNS lookup time metric which better reflects real-world experiences.

  35. يقول Trojanman :

Most of these rankings are based on paid for referrals. That doesn’t mean these vpn’s are necessarily bad, but that the reviewers are totally biased!

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Trojanman,

BestVPN.com is a commercial website that makes money from affiliate links (we very open about this). We do, however, have a relationship with almost all VPN providers on the market, and it therefore makes very little difference to us from a commercial standpoint which ones you choose. I will also point out that even when providers such as Mullvad or IVPN have no interest in working with websites such as ours, we will still give them great reviews when such are warranted. In short, we pride ourselves on providing impartial advice to our readers.

  36. يقول Trevor :

I just signed up for Nordvpn and have found them awesome. They have dedicated servers for faster P2P and can now access sites restricted by my ISP. Really easy to set up and use.

  37. يقول Sully :

These recommendations are very confusing, if nothing short of suspect. Depending when you click or where you navigate to, the most recommended VPN changes. Sometimes it’s Express VPN other times it’s another.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      H Sully,

      1. Different pages are aimed at different audiences. The best VPN for privacy is not necessarily the same as as the best VPN for watching Netflix.
      2. We are a large site and we adapt our recommendations to the current situation as we see it. It can take time to update our current thinking across all pages.

  38. يقول Lenard :

The nature of the beast is if you’re using any VPN with a reasonable amount of encryption, you’re going to suffer a reduction in speeds. This is the physics of using a VPN.

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi Sully,

That is correct, although when using a good VPN service and connected to a nearby server the speed loss is likely to be unnoticeable.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi WTF,

Hmm. We reached out to NordVPN about this and received the following (not very helpful) reply:

“our Q&A says the apple ID password is required on 1st install only” (I can find no such statement in its FAQ or Knowlegebase).

Is it the app itslef that is asking for your Apple ID, or the OS asking for confirmation that you run to run the app?

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi again WTF,

Yes – it is definitely iOS that is asking you to confirm that its ok to install the app:

“regarding the Apple ID case, just to clarify, NordVPN does not request nor use Apple ID. It’s the requirement of Apple themselves and it’s the same as with any other app: a user must provide the Apple ID upon downloading the app or in order to confirm the purchase.”

  41. يقول John (UK) :

Hi, BestVPN is a great source of information, especially for a newbie like me. I have read several articles here on securing online privacy, e.g. via VPN, TOR, TAILS, etc. I have a question, that may have an obvious answer, but here goes: would using two VPNs be more secure, i.e. suppose I use VPN-1 on my PC and VPN-2 on my router; VPN-1 secures the data from my PC and VPN-2 encrypts it again using a different VPN. Would this scenario have any privacy/security benefits?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi John,

I’m glad you find this website useful! I discuss just this subject at some length in my article Chaining VPN servers (specifically under the “Chaining VPN servers yourself” section). If you have any further questions please let me know.

I too use Ivacy and find it excellent in all aspects examined within the purported ‘review’.

Secure DNS, IPV6 leak protection, kill switch to close an application if connection is lost etc, etc.

I guess their prices are so good that their review commission may be lower, so no mention?

Clearly I would like to think that their maybe lower affiliate % payment/s are not the cause of them getting no mention.
The list makes no sense in value vs quality of service without them though – in my opinion anyway.

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi Jon,

Our latest Ivacy Review (which does nweed updating) found the service to be very slow. we also find its white-label affiliation with PureVPN to be very off-putting.

I’m assuming that speed is very dependent on local in country services by the vpn provider.

    5. يقول Sully :

      Lol. 10-15% is complete rubbish.

Try 50-80% in ideal circumstances using any VPN provider’s VPN client when connected to your closest server.

I prefer to obtain reasonably accurate speed results via forums from trusted members and posters, not those who have an affiliation or vested interest in promoting a provider or service.

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi Sully,

Our reviews are unbiased and our test results are genuine. In my recent ProtonVPN Review (with whom we have no business relationship), for example, average speeds to a nearby ProtonVPN server were just 6.43% slower than the average control (no VPN) speed tests. I will be happy to send you a file containing all test results, if you wish.

  53. يقول Mozef Kaddas :

Thank you, Douglas, for such a brilliant article regards the best VPN services, I enjoyed going through all of the top 5. and I’d like to share my thoughts.

I have literally tried many of the VPN’s providers, and I have stalled with Hide.me as it provides me with Privacy, Performance, and Speed. Yet I was looking at the same time for another provider that I can also provide me with the (Privacy, Performance, and Speed) I have tried ExpressVPN but didn’t suit my need, or maybe I haven’t set it upright, I also tired NordVPN also to check if it can provide me with must important things with VPN. First time I used NordVPN didn’t know what to do with those thousands of servers, I got lost to find the right server for my location that gives me less ping with excellent speed as my speed reaches “with No VPN” (105Mbps DL / 20Mbps UL). Hide.me gives me an excellent connection of 93Mbps DL, I can watch Youtube 4K 60FPS easily. But I’m still eager to find my (Plan B) in the VPN world. I canceled my NordVPN after no luck with Speed & performance.
After about 6 months, I read your awesome article, as I have huge trust in “BestVPN.com” as well as I trust you since you have excellent knowledge and experience; I gave NordVPN another try, telling my self I must go through their website and seek knowledge and information since they have excellent reviews from many reviewers.
Before I let you know my feedback I must let you know few things, My OS is MacOS, and I’m not a big fan of VPN’s App, so I always set it manually, I trust IKEv2 is better as you explain it in the previous article. I also prefer two countries, UK and Netherlands, I’m not interested to get connected to others country, those two are my favorites.
I Looked at NordVPN pages and I followed exactly what it has been explained in very clear tutorials, viewed the location of the servers page and I picked and set up 20 “IKEv2” NordVPN Servers connections manually, and I want your opinion on those results kindly 😉
Speed with No VPN (105Mbps DL | 20Mbps UL)
    — UK IKEv2 NordPN Connection —
    1 – 2 Servers gave me speed of 25Mbps
    2 – 6 Servers gave me speed from 35Mbps to 50Mbps
    3 – 2 Servers gave me speed from 88Mbps to 98Mbps

    — Netherlands IKEv2 NordVPN Connection —
1 – 3 Servers gave me speed from 25 Mbps to 30 Mbps
2 – 5 Servers gave me speed from 35 Mbps to 55 Mbps
3 – 2 Servers gave me Speed from 80 Mbps to 95 Mbps

so I deleted those which have given me less than 80Mbps and kept those with higher than 80 Mbps both the UK and NL servers to use them whenever I connect to VPN.

Please I’d like to ask your opinion kindly regard the result speed and performance, if this is normal, excellent or poor speed, I’m happy

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Mozef,

In order to answer this question I need to know what your control speeds are (i.e. how fast is your internet with a VPN), and how far away you are from NordVPN’s UK and NL servers (distance makes a big difference to speeds). I’ll just note that 80Mbs+ is pretty darn fast by most people’s standards anyway!

If you use a VPN for privacy, I would recommend avoiding UK servers. IKEv2 is good, although I would always choose OpenVPN instead.

    2. يقول Mozef Kaddas :

Thank you, Douglas, for the quick reply, I’m a big fan of yours, I always look out for your articles. My location is the United Arab Emirates. Please illuminate me how to provide you with more information. I can absolutely go through the test again.

The questions which just popped out of my head, why don’t recommend the UK servers, and will OpenVPN protocol provide me with the same speed of IKEv2 protocol?

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi Mozef,

To see how fast a VPN service is you need to compare your speeds without a VPN to your speeds with a VPN. The distance from the UAE to the UK and Netherlands will also slow down your internet.

I recommend avoiding UK servers because the UK is a surveillance state. IKEv2 might be a little faster than OpenVPN, but OpenVPN is open source, is fully audited, and is the only protocol mentioned in the papers released by Edward Snowden as being secure against even the NSA.

    3. يقول Mozef Kaddas :

I have mentioned earlier in my first reply that my Speed with No VPN is 105Mbps Download and 20Mbps Upload.

I can’t thank you enough I will for sure look at OpenVPN as someone recommends setting your OpenVPN as TCP 443 which is still secure and it looks like “HTTPS”.

Thank you, Douglas, for all the great information; I will for sure do my homework and Start checking server by server with OpenVPN
      Cheers 😉

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi Mozef,

Well… using OpenVPN on TCP port 443 is great for evading VPN blocks, but it is inefficient. Might be a good idea in the UAE, though.

  54. يقول Patrick :

Tested all three VPNs listed in #1 – 3 places. So agree with editors – NordVPN is the winner without any questions – good price for great performance, no importance to pay double as now both Express and Nord have pretty the same features, but Nord performs slightly better.

  55. يقول Gsnallis :

I agree with Bestvpn.com crew – NordVpn is top-notch vpn service at the moment. Speed drops minimum, so I’m using it all the time on all devices.

Subscribed to Expressvpn and after three weeks my second user couldn’t connect, the error was server for protocol did not respond. He tried several other servers and the same error appeared. I tried on his login and had the same result. I went to terminal mode and removed the program.

Subsequently I began to have the same problem. I changed to OpenVpn and still had no server connection. I have removed the program and changed my account to terminate the subscription. Sadly Expressvpn does not refund, instead it places the subscriber to a hold until the subscription period expires.

Perhaps you should caution potential subscribers regarding that policy.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Philip,

I am somewhat surprised that you have had such a negative experience with ExpressVPN, as I have always found its customer service to be superb. I may email them to find out what happened here.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi stephen,

The buffering is likely due to the speed of your internet connection, made slower, I’m guessing, by your distance to the UK? A VPN will not help here – in fact it will slightly slow down your internet speeds, and so may make the matter worse. A VPN will, however, help you to access services that are blocked to overseas users.

NordVPN does not provide port forwarding which makes it useless at any price for loads of us. #1 ? No way.

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi Moo,

The reality is that port forwarding is _not_ a feature most VPN users need (and it can be big security risk) . If you _do_ need it, the feature should be listed in each provider review.

  66. يقول Marcus F. :

Some sites scan for open common ports (80,443,8080,etc) and based on those results they block or allow access.

So if VPN provider is not blocking, at least common incoming ports, their service would be pretty much useless sooner or later.

As of now I have found that only VyprVPN blocks incoming ports but they are not accepting crypto payments.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Marcus,

I have not heard of this. Why would sites block users based on which ports a VPN provider leaves open?

  67. يقول Voltain :

I’ve just run a test of ExpressVPN and NordVPN and I was impressed NordVPNs speed test with US servers. I’ve got 85/80 Mbps comparing without and with VPN.

  68. يقول Travis :

    Hi,
Is it me or is it extremely difficult to find genuine reviews of VPN services provided by actual customers who have used the service over a long period of time and are prepared to be more open and honest? Am I missing something or do we all have to pretend that a VPN provider is good when in actual fact it is not? I have used quite a few VPNs and have yet to find even a 60% functional one, yet the professional reviews are often glowing. What is going on? The only way a VPN is going to improve is if more people can provide honest detailed information about what works and what doesn’t or is it the case that very few people are using VPNs because using a VPN is like throwing money in an open fireplace, yes, the money will burn, produce a beautiful flame but it most certainly will not keep you warm for an entire year.

    1. يقول Ray Walsh :

We are sorry to hear about your experiences, but we test VPNs thoroughly and if you look at the individual reviews you will find the pros and cons of each service. The fact is that a VPN has to route your traffic via the VPN server which inevitably slows your internet connection down. The best VPNs do slow down internet connections the least, and the VPNs that we place on the best 5 list have been tested and proven to have the best all-around services. If they aren’t giving you the speed you desire, perhaps it is because your internet connection is slow in the first place and the extra strain that the VPN is putting on your connection is making VPNs a problem? All I can tell you is that I use many VPNs (because I review them) and I can more often than not do most the things I need to do even with poorer services. As such any of the services above would work fine for me, and they do for the vast majority of people that come back to bestVPN.com to tell us that they are happy with the service.

  69. يقول Watson :

    Hi Douglas,

Do you know of any “pay per use” type of VPNs? Private Tunnel used to offer it but now switched to monthly subscriptions.

    1. يقول Ray Walsh :

Many VPNs have weekly subscription options, but this is as close to pay per use as you are going to get in my experience.

  70. يقول JJTyler :

    Hi,
I have been using ExpressVPN for years but since the last year the connection speed from Sweden to the US, on my Android, is below belief. Whichever city I choose I get a maximum, if I’m lucky, of 6-7 mbit. Watching shows on HBO or Hulu is really a pain with som many hiccups it’s impossible. I have several friends from the US and they experience the same thing, the connection really sucks.

It really used to be great a couple of years ago so I don’t really know what happened to them- Probably to many customers when they got popular.

  72. يقول Dante :

ExpressVPN has recently been caught using fake server locations. They also lie about their logging polcies by claiming to be no logs on their website. These guys are not to be trusted at all!!

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Dante,

Can you please explain what you mean when you say ExpressVPN uses fake server locations? With regards to logging, I agree that “Zero logging of your network traffic” is little misleading, but this kind of marketing hype is all too common. What ExpressVPN means is that it does not not log which websites you visit, or what you otherwise do on the internet. It does keep some connection (metadata) logs, but these are fairly minimal. The timestamp only records the day of connection, for example, IP addresses of users are not logged, and the rest of the stuff is only collected in aggregate form.

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi Khalid,

Thanks. This has now become big news, and we (Ray) are about to publish an article on virtual sever locations any time now.

If I have VPN service right on my router, than all my internet activity from all devices will go through the VPN. Will I still be able to connect to my work VPN – Meaning I will have a VPN tunnel within a VPN tunnel?

    Thanks!

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Fred,

If you run your work VPN in software, then yes (in theory). Your data will be routed via the VPN server, but should not really matter. The only potential problem I can see is if your company VPN doesn’t like incoming connections made from unauthorized IP addresses (i.e. the VPN server). Unless you are going to get into trouble for even trying, why sign-up for a service with a free trial/money back guarantee, and test for yourself?

    2. يقول Fred :

Thanks for the reply. The only downside with a free trial is that I will need to buy a router that allows me to install the VPN. Are there one or two VPN providers that you recommend that allows torrenting with US servers and will allow me to purchase a router on amazon and then install the VPN software?

      1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

        Hi Fred,

ExpressVPN allows torrentig on its US servers. It even has its own router firmware which you can flash onto a compatible router. Alternatively, many routers, such as the Linksys WRT1200AC, have an OpenVPN client built-in, so can used with any VPN service that supports OpenVPN (which is almost all of them) with it. AirVPN, IPVanish, and Buffered (for example) also all allow torrening on their US servers.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Eddie,

Without knowing more details it is difficult to provide a specific answer. In general, however:

      – If you installed a VPN app then simply uninstall the app in the usual way for your device
      – If you installed the VPN by manually configuring your device’s settings, simply reverse what you did earlier i.e go to your you phone’s VPN settings page and delete the settings.

      Hi Born yesterday,

All the VPN services listed here work just fine on an iPad – in fact I’m pretty sure all of them have custom iOS apps. They should also have no impact at all on online banking (whether you use an app or do it via website).

      Hi xray,

I must admit that I’m not 100% sure what you are asking. If you have connected your TV smart box (is this an Android/Kodi box?), then you should be able to access services such as Netflix using either the app or via its website. Unfortunately, many VPN services are blocked by Netflix, so please check out our reviews to find out worked when we last checked them. If using an Android/Kodi box then you will probably find it worth buying a keyboard and mouse/trackpad controller, rather than the “tv remote”‘style controllers these things often come with.

    Hello Douglas,
I am looking for good reliable VPN with static IP, what do you recommend?
I contacted ExpressVPN and IPVanish and it seems that they don’t give static IPs. I also contacted NordVPN and it seems that you can buy static IP from them for $70/year and then have to purchase VPN services separately for addition cost. Do you recommend NordVPN? they use OpenVPN for their dedicated IP which seems to be good from your articles that I read.
    Below was their response:
“The dedicated IP in any of the countries costs $70 per year. Of course, you need to have a valid VPN account to benefit from the dedicated IP (dedicated IP will not work without a valid VPN account).

We offer dedicated IP addresses in the:
    • United States (Buffalo),
    • Germany (Frankfurt),
    • United Kingdom (London),
    • Netherlands (Amsterdam).

The dedicated IP addresses are only available using OpenVPN protocol, which is used in our Windows, Mac and Android applications, although is accessible using most of the devices.”

The purpose for the static IP is more of a business use and privacy and security concerns.

I truly enjoyed reading your articles and learning about the VPN. Thank you in advance for a quick reply.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Ahmed,

Thanks! We have an article on 5 Best VPNs For Static IPs. It’s author is no longer with us for various reasons, but the list itself should be good. As you can see, NordVPN is at the top of it! NordVPN has worked hard this year to improve its service, and in a recent update to my NordVPN Review, I was quite impressed. Customer service issues remain, but I accept that I might just have been a little unlucky in this regard.

It rather depends on what you want to achieve, but in general, yes, I would recommend a full VPN service. I am not familiar with Browsec, but it seems to be a fairly basic HTTP proxy service. You may fine my in-depth VPNs for Beginners guide helpful in deciding which option is right for you.

  84. يقول Some Dude :

Hi, so I have been using vyprVPN for about a month now, but since I found out about their questionable privacy policy, I’ve been looking for an alternative.

Now, I have three main reasons to use a VPN:

    1. Access geo-blocked content on Netflix
    2. Allow a good friend of mine to bypass the Great Firewall of China
    3. Torrent/P2P

While vyprVPN is AMAZING for the first two, it sucks major balls in regard to my third main use for it.

Which VPN would you recommend that truly does not keep any logs whatsoever, has protocols in place that allow my friend to bypass the GFC, and will also not be discovered by Netflix’s anti-VPN system?

On an unrelated note, I want to thank the good people here at bestvpn for doing what they do, your website is incredibly useful!

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Some Dude,

ExpressVPN permits P2P, and is reportedly great at bypassing the GFW using special “stealth servers” located in Hong Kong. It is also usually good for accessing Netflix. Given that it offers a no-quibble 30-day money back guarantee, there is little to loose by checking that it works in the situations you describe.

NordVPN also permits P2P, offers obfsproxy technology to defeat the GFW, and (last time I checked) will allow you to access US Netflix.

    2. يقول Some Dude Again :

Wow, thanks for the swift reply, I really appreciate that!

To be completely honest with you, I don’t trust ExpressVPN on their logging policy, as I’ve seen contradicting statements about it coming both from them and their users.

I’ll be trying out NordVPN or bolehVPN I think. Thanks for your suggestion 🙂

Um… ExpressVPN offers 24/7 Live Chat support, with wait times usually no more than a few seconds. If you can’t see the Live Chat window, then you may be experiencing the same issue I have in my main browser – all the privacy add-ons I use prevent Live Chat from opening. Try visiting ExpressVPN using a “plain vanilla” browser instead.

    Thanks.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Anthony,

I am not persoanlly very familiar with TunnelBear, but Katrina wrote a very favorable TunnelBear Review. A quick look tells me that TunnelBear uses great OpenVPN encryption, and that it has a good minimal logs policy (it says “no logs”, but as clearly laid out in ts Privacy Policy, some logs are kept. These are indeed pretty minimal, however, so I’m not going to quibble with the “no logs” claim.

On the downside, the speed results Katrina achieved are not good, and a Canada-based is not a good choice if governmnet spying worries you.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi wilf,

      – Have you tried the steps outlined in this tutorial? Although this tutorial references IPVanish in particular (a US-based provider), it should work for any VPN provider that offers an Android app. You do need to manually download the app’s .apk file, but most providers will happily send you link for this is you ask them.

      – Please see 5 Best VPN Routers. You can always plug a VPN router into your ISP-supplied modem/router (e.g. Sky Box) via a an Ethernet cable, and connect through that.

      – Please check out our Ivacy Review. Reviser Thomas’ main issue with the service is that it is very slow, which certainly puts it out of the running for our top 5 VPN recommendations. As far as I can tell, Ivacy is a white-label customer of PureVPN, which I also persoanlly find rather off putting.

  92. يقول Oak :

In your review of VPN Area, you stated that the US server speed was pretty slow. Based on your speed in the European area, I’m assuming you’re based somewhere in Europe; nevertheless, have you conducted anymore tests on US server speed to determine if those results were an anomaly or the normality? Also, do you think that it would be appropriate for use on a 15 mbps (about 2.5 Mbps) connection?

    Thanks in advance

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Oak,

Yes, we are based in Europe (we are a UK company, but also have an office in Budapest). I’m afraid that we don’t have the resources to keep retesting every VPN provider’s speeds. The results you see in the published review will be our most recent ones (and which are only around 6 months old). VPNArea offers a 7-day money back guarantee (which it honors), so why not give it a test-run, and see what speeds you get for yourself?

Hmm 15 Mbps = 1.875 MB/s. You will always get some speed loss when using a VPN. With a good service, and connected to a nearby server, this can be as low as 10% (but can be much higher, especially when connecting to a server on the other side of the Atlantic). A VPN is perfectly appropriate for a 15 Mbps connection.

  93. يقول Robert :

Hey can you suggest the best VPN that isn’t based within the fourteen eyes?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Robert,

NordVPN is a no-logs provider based in Panama. Some of its servers are rather slow, but it is otherwise a fully featured service, and with a little trial and error, fast servers are available. BolehVPN is registered in the Seychelles but operates out of Malaysia. It is little feature-light, but has the basics nailed down well.

  95. يقول Diana :

Hello, this will be my first time using a VPN and I have been doing some research. So far, I think I am leaning either towards ExpressVPN or NordVPN (actually, I would like to know why it wasn’t included on this list) but I am open to other options. I am tempted by Nord’s lower prices and no log policies, but I’m a little turned down by the complaints and cons regarding speed.
ExpressVPN is said to be faster (right?), but I get suspicious at how perfect it is supposed to be. Also, yes, quite pricey (which I am willing to overlook if guaranteed that it does what it is supposed to).
    These are my priorities:
I want a VPN that still works on Netflix, and that manages geo-restrictions in other popular sites well. Is any particularly better? Is either one of these more likely to stop working in the future?

Regarding the speed, honestly, I don’t mind if I get less of it as long as it’s enough to stream in hd, and torrent at, say, 1 Mb. Is NordVPN’s low speed still enough for these?

Even though I AM interested in privacy, I admit that a little logging like ExpressVPN’s isn’t my biggest concern, only because I’ve read it’s strictly for improving the service. Is that true?

Also, I’ve read it isn’t that simple, but I would like to connect a router to the VPN so I can access it from other devices such as TV. Is either of the two better for this?

I am open to other options if there’s any that better fulfills my needs. And obviously I care about a VPN that’s reliable in its performance in general. Also, I live in Mexico, in case that affects anything.
    Thanks

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Diana,

      – NordVPN is a good service, but its speed performance is an issue. Please see my recently updated ExpressVPN Review for a detailed look at why we recommend the service so highly. Yes – ExpressVPN keeps a few logs (and they really are very minimal) in order to help ensure it runs a smooth service.

      – From my newly updated artiucle on Best VPN routes (due to be published any time now):

VPN routers are routers that have been configured to connect to a VPN service. Many modern routers have a VPN client built in, which can usually be configured via the router’s admin page.

It is also possible to flash routers with third party firmware such as DD-WRT and Tomato, which include a VPN client. Indeed, some providers offer pre-flashed routers that have been pre-configured for their service.

The main advantages of using VPN routers are:

Every device that connects to the router is protected by the VPN.
This includes devices that cannot run VPN software themselves, such as smart TVs, games consoles, and Roku boxes. This is very useful for geo-spoofing.
The router counts as just one VPN connection, as far as your provider is concerned. This means you can connect an unlimited number of devices to the VPN at once via the router.

All of which is great! The main downside, however, is that encrypting and decrypting VPN data is very processor-intensive (especially when using OpenVPN). Most routers struggle with the job, resulting in poor internet connection speeds.

This is particularly true of the slew of mini VPN boxes that have hit the market recently, such as the Anonabox or PandaPow WiFi. The hardware in such devices is so underpowered for the job at hand, that you can expect to lose 90% or more of your internet connection speed when using them.

It is, therefore, important to choose a VPN router with beefy hardware in order to prevent it from slowing down your internet connection.

      – Living in Mexico does not make much difference to your choice as long as your chosen VPN provider offers servers runs servers not too far from you geographically (so don ‘t chose a provider that only runs servers in Europe!). You might want to check our 5 Best VPNs for Mexico

      1. يقول TJB :

        Hi Douglas,

If I were to buy, say, a Linksys router pre-configured with the VPN and DD-WRT, am I correct in my impression that I wouldn’t need to use one of these services? Or would I still benefit from using both a VPN router as well as a separate monthly VPN service?

        1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

          Hi TJB,

          – When you buy a preconfigured router you still need a subscription to a VPN service. Pretty much all VPN services that offer routers throw a 1 year subscription in with the price of the router. Once that subscription is over, however, it will need to renewed.

          – Your VPN subscription for the router will almost certainly give you the full benefits of a regular subscription (but do check before purchasing). This will mean that if the provider allows more than one simultaneous connection (as most do), you can also install the VPN on different devices (the router will count as one device). So you will not need a separate VPN subscription.

          – But there is value in installing the VPN software on your mobile devices. This allows them to use the VPN service when away from home (/your router).

  96. يقول Iceman :

I was user of ExpressVPN and frankly speaking I was satisfied with the service but now I feel it is a bit pricey for me.
My main use case are P2P usage, multiple devices ( mac,iOS,ubuntu) ,privacy and obviously attractive prices.

Any suggestions would be great ?
ExpressVPN dont seem to have any promotional campaigns

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Iceman,

VPNArea is a good choice for you, and ticks all your boxes. Although it is not on this list (there are plenty of good services out there, and we can only pick 5 for each list!) Private Internet Access is also a good company that is P2P-freindly, allows up to 5 simultaneous devices, and costs just $3.33/mo if purchased annually (or $6.95/mo/mo). Privacy-wise, it keeps no logs, but is based in the US.

I have the sign VPN on the top of my IPad.Does this mean I am paying for something I know nothing about and did not request. If so can I get this deleted.
    Thank you in anticipation.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi William,

That would suggest that you have a VPN running. Look through your apps list and uninstall anything that looks like it might be a VPN app. An even more worrying possibility is that your iPad has some form of malware that is directing all your internet traffic through a VPN to server where it can be snooped on. Malware is very rare on iOS devices, so this unlikely, but then again, you should not have a VPN running that didn’t install (and iOS malware does exist)! Unfortunately, Apple is so confident that its devices are immune to malware, that it has removed all anti-malware apps from the App Store…

  99. يقول Guy Haiar :

How can you tell if a VPN is a white label?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Guy,

I don’t think there is an easy way to tell (other than by noticing that providers use similar-looking software, etc.).

  100. يقول Shurf :

This website is a joke. You have popups for ExpressVPN, ExpressVPN advertisements directly on this page, and then you predictably have ExpressVPN as your number one recommendation. Freaking ridiculous. ExpressVPN collects data and sends it to third parties.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Shurf,

We recommend ExpressVPN quite a lot because we believe it to be an excellent service that is also well-suited to the majority of our less-technically inclined readers. Please see my ExpressVPN Review for a full (and honest) discussion on why we believe ExpressVPN is worth recommending. And yes, ExpressVPN does keep some (fairly minimal) connection logs. According to its Privacy Policy,

“Our software may send diagnostic data to a third party analytics provider for the purpose of identifying connection errors and possible bugs in our application. The information collected is generic in nature and does not contain personally identifying information.” (emphasis mine).

I 100% agree that ExpressVPN is not the best choice for privacy fanatics out there, but these make up a very small proportion of our readers. For the vast majority of our readers, we believe that ExpressVPN’s ease of use, speed, great customer support, 30-day money back guarantee, large feature-set, etc., etc., are more important than some anonymized aggregated logs being shared with third parties.

Ray also chips in with this,

“aye but its aggregate and non informative, perhaps people need to realize that for something to run well perhaps a little effort on the VPNs part is the opposite of negligence (its actually harder to do something about keeping it running wonderfully than to sit back and do nada because u have no data). For example monitoring people’s aggregate server speeds data – and then talking to the server renting (third party) about the problem with the mexican server AND getting back up to full pelt is hardly a bad thing.”

I personally think this is a very good point, although I do agree with you that privacy-heads would still prefer no logs to be kept at all. But as I say, most of our readers are not, in fact privacy fanatics, and (we believe) will be happy with the level of privacy offered by ExpressVPN. It is also worth noting that we always list connection logs as a “con” on our ExpressVPN summary lists. So its not as if we are trying to hide anything.

Tried them again this year hoping the problems was sorted but no such luck after they promised that they would fix the problems. Also I use Multiplicity on my computers so I can control all of them with one Keyboard and Mouse Express VPN does not support that and I lose connection through Multiplicity to my other computers as soon as I connect with Expressvpn I’ve spend hours chatting with their support and tried everything they suggested just to be told at the end that sorry Express VPN does not work with Multiplicity installed.
I was with many VPN services already and Express was the first one that had a problem with Multiplicity. I can supply you with the chat log if you don’t believe me so how you can rate them as the best VPN is a mystery to me.
Also the amount of devices you can use at the same time only 3 is ridiculous at that price. There is actually nothing good I can say about them and I tried really hard to think of something because even their response to my original complaint got answered about 48hrs later. Them calling themselves the Fastest VPN like most of the things they say on their website is just not true. I’m now with VPNArea and no real problems except some speed issues on some of their servers. Why were they not included in your list I would really like to know maybe there is something I overlooked and needs to change VPN services again. Oh and I’m from South Africa.

I am wondering if having a VPN is worth it, regarding your personal information on your devices.

I am currently looking at freedome. Would you have some advice and recommendations?

    I mostly surf the web.

    1. يقول Ben Taylor :

I would say it’s definitely worthwhile Enrique – public WiFi hotspots are a REALLY easy target for hackers – see this article and video for more information:

      https://www.bestvpn.com/best-vpn-wifi-hotspot/

    2. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Enrique,

Please see my VPNs for Beginners guide for a full discussion of what a VPN can and cannot do for you. The providers listed in this article are BestVPN.com’s recommendations.

It’s almost a Year now using *strill & it’s one of the vpn’s that worked well here in Tsina, i hope they can give me a discount when my plan expires lol.

  109. يقول Petterson :

What are the strengths and weaknesses of PureVPN? I have seen several sites indicating as a good option and a very affordable price.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Petterson,

      Negatives:

      1. Here at BestVPN.com we have received vastly more complaints about PureVPN than about any other VPN service (in fact, complaints about PureVPN number all complaints about services added together!).
      2. PureVPN does not honor its “money back guartentee.”
      3. Keeps connection (metadata) logs
      4. IPv6, DNS, and WebRTC leaks detected

That’s enough to me off, but please see our recent PureVPN Review for a list of its good points (do note the comments, though).

  110. يقول Sanderson :

Por que PureVPN é pior? Estava querendo pegar a promoção dele e grande maioria dos sites que pesquisei o indicam como bom. Afinal quais os pontos positivos (se houver) e quais o negativos, o porque de não usar o PureVPN?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Sanderson,

Please see my reply to Petterson above. Por favor veja minha resposta a Peterson acima.

  111. يقول Ray :

Don’t know if anyone can help me with this but I’m looking for a VPN that has a server in Michigan (US), lower part of the state the better. I’ve looked far and wide with nothing so far. Thank you.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Ray,

I’m afraid that I don’t know any off the top of my head, but perhaps our readers might help?

    2. يقول Josh :

Private Internet Access (PIA) has a Chicago node and a Midwest node. Both have good speeds (depending on the load, of course).

  112. يقول Shekelstein :

Why did you guys list the most expensive NordVPN pricing plan (the monthly rate), but then list the cheapest annual rates for all the other VPN services?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Shekelstein,

Thanks for spotting that error. I have now fixed it.

  113. يقول Stacia :

Hi can you tell me which VPNs to avoid?
I like the lists but there are so many options. Do you have any articles on “bad VPNs” that people shouldn’t get?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Stacia,

I believe that we are working on a “5 Worse VPNs list”. I am not directly involved, and many of our staff are away for Christmas holidays, so I cannot provide further information at this point in time. Personally, I would include:

      – PureVPN – we have received a huge number of complaints about this service and it does not honor its money back guarantee
      – Hide My Ass (HMA) – UK based and has a history of handing over users’ logs to the police
      – SaferVPN/TotalVPN (same parent company) – not used them myself, but am told they are horrible VPN services in every way
      – Hola (steals users bandwidth and sells it!)
      – VPN book – accusations by Anonymous that this is service is a honeypot are unproven, but I wouldn’t trust it…
      – ibVPN – I found this service too slow to actually use

(I know that’s six, but there you go…)

  114. يقول snat :

    hi guys
please tell me tge best safest vpn very very encrypt is very important to me

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi snat,

ExpressVPN and AirVPN are both excellent.

  115. يقول Abdahl :

    Hi,
I’m just wondering how impartial your recommendation for ExpressVPN is, when I see ExpressVPN advertisements and popups all over this site. ???

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Abdahl,

ExpressVPN advertises with us and (as with all VPN providers) provides us with affiliate payments. This does not, however, affect how we review or rank it in out lists. Please see my recent detailed ExpressVPN Review for an in-depth look at why BestVPN.com recommends this provider so highly.

      1. يقول Rick :

Anybody with an IQ over 65 can see that this is a conflict of interest.
How can you write an impartial review when your review is linked to your income?
That’s just as bad as telecom companies lobbying congressional members to write favorable legislation. You guys are always railing against the government and the evil corporations, but the same exact thing is going on when you accept money from affiliates and then write “reviews.”

        1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

          Hi Rick,

And games magazines don’t print ads for games etc.? How else do you propose a VPN Review website raise revenue? There is, however, very little real conflict of interest. Almost every VPN provider out there offers an affiliate scheme, so it doesn’t really matter to us on a financial level which service you pick. We get paid whatever. It is also worth noting that a very few VPN services do not operate affiliate schemes. A good example of this is AirVPN. But despite this, you will see AirVPN highly recommended on this website, purely because we believe it offers an outstanding service. BestVPN.com has built its reputation on writing in-depth and impartial reviews. That is what we do, and is why we are successful.

  116. يقول Dominic :

When am overseas i find it hard to sign into my gmail mail account.I have used vip72 but my ip still leaking to gmail and keep asking me to get codes from my phone.
which of these VPN would you recommend for me to access my gmail account easily anytime am overseas for business

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Dominic,

If you regularly uses the same VPN server, you should not continually need to prove your identity when you sign-in to Gmail. So any of of the above service should work just fine for you.

  117. يقول Sandi :

Hi, I’m wondering why this article, which has a date published date of December 6, 2016, has comments going back to August 2016?
Also, the star rating system does not seem to line up with the 10 point score.
    Can you please explain?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Sandi,

We update our core articles on a fairly regular basis. This insures that the information in them remains relevant and up to date (and also helps with our Google rankings). We used to simply replace older articles with the newer versions (automatically redirecting visors to the newer version). We found that this was less than ideal, however, as often valuable discussions in the comments sections got lost each time. So now, rather than publishing new pages, we update the older pages, and revise the publish date when we do so. This allows us to keep the comments sections intact on updated articles.

  118. يقول vpnuser :

Just a quick note for this good review:
Except Buffered, I used all. I wouldn’t give VyprVPN the 4.5 score, because: 1) they do not support torrent. I based in US and I received an email warning that Im using torrent. 2) Their app logging (vyprvpn service) a lot even when the app is not running.

Among these, IPvanish is the rock solid and the best IMO. Expressvpn is good but expensive. I would go with PIA which is completely anonymous. You can buy gift cards from stores and activate it (no name, credit card or other hassles). Just remember Expressvpn, ipvanish, vyprvpn and PIA are based in US!

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi vpnuser,

Thanks for your thoughts! You are correct that VyprVPN does not permit P2P, but this is not an issue for many VPN users. PIA is good, but please remember that you are not actually anonymous because no matter what payment method you use, it can still see your real IP address (this is true of almost all VPN providers, except those that offer VPN through Tor).

      1. يقول vpnuser :

It’s ridiculous that even by purchasing a gift card in cash from the grocery store to use VPN, you are not anonymous at all, at least for the VPN provider. So after paying a lot for various vpn vendors, wondering what is the point itf you can NOT be 100% anonymous!!

        1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

          Hi vpnuser,

You are correct. VPNs do not provide anonymity, because the way the technology works means that the VPN provider will always know your real IP address, and can log what you get up to on the internet should it choose to or be forced to do so (the major exception to this rule is if using VPN through Tor). Using a good no logs VPN can nevertheless provide a high degree of privacy, and prevent most forms of targeted surveillance.

If you require real anonymity, however, then you should use the Tor network or I2P instead. Note that unlike with VPNs, both Tor and I2P provide a sub-par general internet experience (i.e. they are very slow).

  119. يقول Marcus :

Do any of these services come with with adblocking? I’ve been using adguard but it is incompatible with VPNs…

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Marcus,

For ad blocking / anti-tracking I recommend using uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger together. These addons are both compatible with VPNs. For more details and other options please see my Ultimate Privacy Guide.

  120. يقول Matt :

What exactly is meant by the references to Fourteen Eyes in this article?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Matt,

Five Eyes (FVEY) is an NSA-led spying alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and which Edward Snowden described as a ‘supra-national intelligence organization that doesn’t answer to the known laws of its own countries.’ Intelligence is freely shared between security organizations of member countries, a practice that is used to evade legal restrictions on spying on their own citizens. Fourteen Eyes is an extended alliance that also includes Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Sweden.

  121. يقول Sam :

Hi, Good article. Just a quick question. What criteria exactly did you use to come up with a 3.7 review on IPVanish? When I click “read review” for IPVanish I see it has 5 stars under editor review and I’m confused why it has 3.7 on this specific article. thanks

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Sam,

The star ratings on our 5 best lists are a subjective assessment by the article’s author on the merits of each provider in that category relative to the others. In my opinion this is not ideal, but makes more sense when the list deals with a niche category (such as 5 Best VPNs for Linux) rather than such a general one as this. I have flagged this issue up with our team for further discussion.

  122. يقول Billy :

I signed up with ExpressVPN, I paid by credit card but was not comfortable giving my full address that they asked for.
After using it for 24 hours I get an email telling me that they have cancelled my service and I need to send a picture of my credit card albeit they said blur out the numbers except the last for digits .
I google this and it seems they do this with a lot of people.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Billy,

I agree that this is not good behavior from a VPN provider. FWIW, ExpressVPN does accept payment in Bitcoins..

      1. يقول Billy :

        Thank you DC.
Question: Do you know what country IPVanish is located ?

        1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

          Hi Billy,

IPVanish is a brand name for Mudhook Marketing, Inc., a US company based in Florida.

  123. يقول Roger :

I purchased and downloaded NordVPN, it was a disaster in terms of speed and overall function – especially the so-called “kill switch” which shut down everything every 20 minutes. I really don’t understand how Nord even makes it on these lists. It was also listed on PCmag as an “editors choice” – whatever that means. But everywhere you look, the user reviews are terrible. How did Nord make it on your list?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Roger,

As we acknowledge in out NordVPN Review, poor speeds are an issue with NordVPN. The fact that it is based in Panama is is very privacy-focused, however, recommends the service to us.

  124. يقول Ron :

Nord has some issues, however they don’t show up until well after their 30 money back guarantee. I found their speeds to be really slow on most servers, and you had to physically hunt for something suitable. I bought the top package and it worked reasonably well – just a few hiccups – and then one day out of the blue, could not connect to the service at all! Their techs never did get the problem fixed and I wound up at the very end using L2TP / PPTP (an absolute nightmare of issues) to even be able to use the service at all! No money back of course! Have no idea where to go from here, as being one of your top picks, I am hesitant to try anything at all. Maybe TOR? But I hear the Government is getting really nasty about TOR users because of the tendency for pedophiles to use it.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Ron,

i’m sorry to hear that you had problems with NordVPN. Slow servers is a problem with the service. You should be aware, however, that Tor is very slow. ExpressVPN is very good, or for a completely no-logs service, I use AirVPN.

  125. يقول Max :

Sir help me what do you think vpn should i use here in philippines?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Max,

ExpressVPN works well in SE Asia. Malaysia-based BolehVPN is also a very good service.

  126. يقول Sophie P :

    Hi there,

I just ordered and connected to NordVPN and my download went from 27+ without being connected to VPN to under 2 when connected. Quality of Slingbox image is terrible, internet navigation is extremely slow. Tried several servers from different countries withing Europe and USA and no improvement. Not sure if I should use the 30day money back or change some settings. Although so far I’ve only tested NordVPN for leisure internet use, I work remotely from France for a company located (servers) in Michigan US and my work requires a good amount of download and upload speed. Not sure what to do.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Sophie,

NordVPN’s speeds can be rather slow (as noted in this article). In the past I have found that I can find a fast servers with a little trial and error. If you cannot find a fast server, however, then I suggest you cancel your subscription and try a different service.

      1. يقول Sophie :

Thank you for your response Douglas, I had to purchase HideIPVPN last night because I could not even connect to any server with NordVPN. At this point I’m waiting for a reply back from NordVPN regarding the 30 days money back guarantee, day 2 waiting. HideIPVPN worked faster I had 10 download and 5 upload.

        1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

          Hi Sphie,

I’m glad that you are happy with HideIPVPN .

  127. يقول Dillon :

What client would you recommend for the Amazon Fire tabs? Are there any servers that are better for Amazon video?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Dillon,

First generation Kindle Fire devices required rooting in order to install a VPN client, but more modern devices can run VPN software out-of-the-box if it is installed via the Amazon Appstore. ExpressVPN is a good option.

  128. يقول josh darius :

I like Nordvpn, never had a problem. Please stay away from HMA, just please, its the worst.

  129. يقول Barbara :

How do I reinstall my VPN after accidentlyuninstalling it on my computer.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Barbara,

Simply re-download the software from your VPN providers’ website and install again the same as you did the first time. You were probably sent an email with all relevant links, so you can search your email account for that, or look on your providers’ website. If you are still having problems, then I am sure that your VPN provider will be happy to assist you.

  130. يقول David Morton :

    My ISP speed is 180Mbps.
PIA gives me 130Mbps, on a good day. Never less than 60Mbps
    ExpressVPN gave me 33Mbps.
Who is calling them the fastest VPN service around.
Someone’s getting some pennies for porkies!

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi David,

A 180Mbps internet connection is very fast. Faster, in fact, than any of our reviewers have the facilities to test.

    2. يقول vpnuser :

I agree. I had terrible speed with Expressvn in work and home. Terrible. Vyprvpn is the fastest then ipvanish and pia

  131. يقول Alfred v D :

BBC iplayer and IPVanish dont work anymore 🙁

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Alfred,

Unfortunately iPlayer is trying to block VPN users, so its a game of cat and mouse. You may well find that IPVanish works again soon (or maybe not).

  132. يقول den :

Used ExpressVPN for 8 months. Lousy speed, dropping connection 20 times a day, not to mention it`s the most expensive one. The only thing they have going is customer service – everything else is not worth it

  133. يقول Sean :

It seems like a glaring omission not to include Private Internet Access here. They keep no logs and are one of (if not the most) popular vpn. Any explanation as to why they were left off or are in your opinion not worthwhile?

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Sean,

Which VPN providers to include in our Best 5 lists is a team decision. This necessary because no one BestVPN team member is familiar with all 100+ providers that we have reviewed. Points against PIA:

      – It is based in the USA, so the NSA must (IMO) be spying on users in some way. The fact that PIA stridently denies this only reduces my trust in the company.
      – I used to use PIA, but disconnections were becoming so common as be a major issue.
      – Apple users (OSX and iOS) repeatedly report dissatisfaction with the service.

I actually think that PIA is a good service, but factors such as the above led our team to prioritize the providers above.

      1. يقول Bleus :

OTOH, they’re LESS THAN *HALF* the price of your favoured service and arguably offer more features, faster speed, more servers and meet or exceed every criteria you’ve identified in your reviews…

Basically, you’re saying that you omitted the largest player in the market primarily because of a holistic, though unfounded, belief that the NSA must *somehow* (though you haven’t demonstrated it in any way whatsoever) “be spying on users in some way” (ignoring, of course, that, within the US, the NSA’s primary means of monitoring traffic comes via willing partnerships with the limited number of carriers and NOT through infiltrating an innumerable number of endpoints)…

        This smells fishy…

        1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

          Hi Bleus,

I am saying that for reasons outlined in the summaries, the BestVPN.com team have decided that the listed VPNs are better than PIA.

  134. يقول Ronald :

I use VPN to browse .Precisely I use VIP72 ..I disabled cookies and are cleared on my system and dns cache it’s always cleared, I disabled flash aswell and I barely use Java scripts , am not black listed I have 100% anonymity when I check on whoer.net but somehow some websites seems to detect my original location ..telling me they can’t verify my when I call them and I know it’s because of my internet settings .. What do you think is the cause ? And I need s solution ..Please I need a reply ASAP

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Ronald,

Please see my Complete Guide to IP Leaks. Also ensure that geolocation is disabled in your browser.

  135. يقول Rhys :

Any reason why NordVPN wasn’t included? It’s protected by the panama laws. They also keep no connection logs whatsoever. They also have the option to connect via TOR using their VPN, have dedicated IP VPN’s and VPN’s for streaming. They also have SSL 2048bit encryption.

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Rhys,

NordVPN tops many of our lists (such as Best Logless). Many of its severs are very slow, however, and it sends your VPN password via plaintext email.

      1. يقول Jerry :

Douglas, how should it send them then?

        1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

          Hi Jerry,

The tried and tested method is to ask you to choose your own password when you sign-up up for a service (which will be protected using HTTPS). That way, a password need never be sent via plaintext email for all the world to see.

          1. يقول Jerry :

Douglas, what password? for signing up?
            besides, they do use https.

          2. يقول Douglas Crawford :

            Hi Jerry,

Yes. Most good VPN companies ask you to choose your own your password during signup. NordVPN instead just sends you one by email, which is not secure (or at least it did last time I used the service).

  136. يقول JaSem :

VPNarea doesn’t have any 7-day trial as you wrote (can not find any on their site).

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi JaSem,

Scroll down to the bottom of the VPNArea home page, or go to the Buy Now page. On the chart, look at the 6th entry down. I have posted a screenshot here.

  137. يقول Jane Bates :

    Hi,

I would like to get a VPN, i am a bit of a technophobe but manage!! I did try one but had problems, I am all Apple and Sky is my broadband provider here in UK (I also go to the Canaries, am assuming it would work out there?) and when I tried to make a call via whatsapp (with VPN connected) iPhone couldn’t connect to internet!
Is there a VPN I can get that is compatible??

    Regards

    Jane

    1. يقول Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Jane,

Yup, a VPN should work wherever in the world you are (unless they are actively blocked, which is unlikely to be the case in the Canaries!). Hmm… using a VPN shouldn’t interfere WhatsApp or prevent your iPhone from accessing the internet! Try another provider – any provider e.g. the ones listed in this article or in 5 Best VPNs for iOS (although I personally do not recommend PIA for iPhone users).
