What Is a BBC iPlayer VPN?

A VPN is a versatile online service that does two important things. Firstly, it allows you to connect to a remote VPN server. Doing so conceals your real IP address and allows you to appear to be in a remote location. In the case of watching BBC iPlayer abroad, you’ll need to pretend to be in the UK.

Secondly, a reliable VPN provides military grade encryption. This securely scrambles all the data coming and going from your PC, laptop, tablet, or mobile device. Thus you can watch iPlayer in private. For a full run-down of how VPNs work, please check out our beginners’ guide

Why Do I Need an iPlayer VPN?

If you want to watch channels like BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, CBeebies, BBC News, and BBC Parliament from outside the UK, you’ll need a VPN. Watching BBC iPlayer from outside of the UK is not allowed. The service is geo-restricted to prevent people doing so. However, with a VPN you can easily pretend to be in the UK to unblock iPlayer.

How Does the BBC Block Content?

The BBC blocks content by restricting the use of the service to people who have a UK IP address. An IP address allows anybody to know where you are. A VPN for iPlayer allows anybody, anywhere to conceal their real IP address with the IP address of a VPN server. By connecting to a VPN server in the UK, you appear to really be there and can thus use BBC iPlayer.

Choosing the Right VPN to Unblock BBC iPlayer

The most important thing about an iPlayer VPN is that it has servers in the UK. As you will be streaming content in HD, it’s also vital that your VPN provides fast connection speeds. Finally, because you are unblocking the BBC (and you aren’t really supposed to), a reliable VPN for iPlayer should have a strong privacy policy and strong encryption. All of the VPNs in this guide have these necessary attributes.

In addition, some  VPN services throw in a free Smart DNS service. Smart DNS is an excellent feature for unblocking content like BBC iPlayer. ExpressVPN has an outstanding Smart DNS service, which adds plenty of value to the platform.

How to Set up a VPN for BBC iPlayer

Setting up a VPN to watch BBC iPlayer abroad is very easy. Just follow these simple steps to get your VPN workaround up and running:

  1. Select a VPN for iPlayer. To unblock iPlayer, we recommend ExpressVPN because it’s secure, fast, and has excellent UK servers. If you need a cheaper option, NordVPN is also superb.
  2. Click through to the website and subscribe to your favorite iPlayer VPN.
  3. Download and install the VPN software. Remember to get the right version for your platform.
  4. Run the software and select your preferred settings (OpenVPN encryption is recommended).
  5. Select a UK server and click Connect.
  6. Use Google to find a UK postcode, think of a fake name, and get a spare email address (if you don’t want to use your real email).
  7. Navigate to BBC iPlayer, subscribe, and click on “Yes I have a TV licence.” (TV licensing is the law in the UK – more details below).
  8. That’s it! Your VPN workaround is set up and you are ready to watch iPlayer online!

Remember: As soon as you connect to the UK server, you appear to be in the UK. Don’t forget that people are allowed to watch iPlayer in Ireland – so you can connect to a server there too!

When you connect, you’re also protected by the VPN’s encryption, which gives you unprecedented levels of online privacy.

How to Test Your VPN for BBC iPlayer

If you want to make sure that your chosen VPN is working correctly, simply head over to ipleak.net. When the VPN is connected, the website should only detect the VPN’s IP address and Domain Name System (DNS) address. Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) detection should also not show an IP address belonging to your ISP. The VPNs in this guide have been thoroughly tested, so they won’t give you any leaks.

To test your VPN’s performance, head over to testmy.net. Remember to check your internet speeds with and without the VPN to get a sense of your connection speeds. To test them, select a test server close to you and run the ‘combined’ test.

Why Is My VPN Not Working to Unblock iPlayer?

If you already have a VPN, but it isn’t unblocking iPlayer abroad, it’s because the BBC is cracking down on IP addresses that it knows belong to VPNs. This has resulted in fewer VPNs being able to unblock iPlayer. Thankfully, the VPNs in this guide do an outstanding job of playing cat and mouse with the BBC. However, this is a fluid situation. As such, if the server you’re using to watch iPlayer fails, then it’s likely that the BBC has discovered that particular BBC VPN IP address and cut it off.

If this happens, don’t panic! Simply contact your VPN, as it will likely have already prepared another IP address to continue unblocking BBC iPlayer.

In addition, it’s possible to get a “dedicated IP address.” This is a VPN IP address that is for your use only. Due to the fact that only you use it (instead of hundreds of people), it’s very hard (near impossible) for the BBC to ascertain that it isn’t a real UK residence (as opposed to a VPN IP).

Are iPlayer VPNs Safe and Legal?

Yes. In most places, using a VPN is perfectly legal. Even in Russia and China, where VPNs are prohibited, using a VPN won’t actually result in a prosecution. However, in places like Iran, China, Russia, UAE, and Saudi Arabia, VPN users are advised to use ‘stealth mode’ technology. This is an added layer of privacy that makes it hard for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to detect VPN use.

Will the BBC Check My Name and Address Against the TV Licence Register?

This is a fair question, and it is certainly possible. In the UK, TV licensing is the law, even if you don’t have a TV. That’s because the TV licensing laws also cover streaming of BBC channels online. The good news is that, like everywhere else, people in the UK often house-share. In shared, rented houses, landlords often pay the TV license. That means that all the people living in the house aren’t named on the license but can watch BBC iPlayer. That’s why using a fake name and postcode works.

The BBC Is Working Hard to Block VPNs

If you have a BBC VPN and it isn’t working, it’s likely that the BBC is detecting VPN use. Many VPNs don’t have the resources to update their servers and get new IP addresses for unblocking iPlayer every time one is blocked. All of the VPNs in this guide make it their mission to keep unblocking iPlayer, so you’re in good hands.

Remember: Using proxies used to work for unblocking iPlayer but it doesn’t work anymore because the BBC has a proxy blocker.

“ExpressVPN BBC iPlayer Not Working”

If at any point ExpressVPN (or any of the other VPNs in this list) stops unblocking iPlayer, it will only be a matter of time before it unblocks it again. VPNs do this by dumping IP addresses that have been blocked by the BBC and using new IP addresses instead.

As such, if anything happens to your ability to unblock iPlayer, please contact your VPN at once so that it can work quickly to rectify the situation. Please let us know here at BestVPN.com as well.

Quick tip: people are allowed to watch iPlayer in Ireland – so you may want to test an Irish server too if one fails.

Best VPN Protocols for Unblocking iPlayer

If you want to access iPlayer abroad, we recommend that you use the most secure internet protocol: OpenVPN. However, for your information, here is a breakdown of all the encryption protocols that may be available to you:

  • Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) – provides less security and privacy but is fast. We generally don’t recommend this protocol as it can be hacked.
  • Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP)/Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) – L2TP/IPsec is stronger than PPTP and is suitable for watching iPlayer.
  • Internet Key Exchange version 2 (IKEv2) – this is the most widely used protocol for iOS VPN clients. It is secure but not as strong as OpenVPN. It’s not usually used by Windows users (because they have other options), but you can use it on Windows if you want to.
  • Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) – this is a fast and secure protocol that you can use to watch iPlayer online securely.
  • OpenVPN – an open source and highly secure protocol. This protocol provides military grade encryption if implemented correctly. All of the VPNs for iPlayer in this article provide OpenVPN (implemented securely). OpenVPN Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is the best for streaming so if you have the option of TCP or User Datagram Protocol (UDP), go for TCP.

Will a Free VPN for BBC iPlayer Work?

There are some free VPNs on the market that we can recommend to access iPlayer. However, the vast majority of free VPNs don’t provide access to BBC iPlayer. The reason for this is that (like Netflix) the BBC is very good at cracking down on VPNs. In addition, although there are some free services out there that are secure, the vast majority of free services are a massive security risk. Why? Because they have outdated encryption and dangerous privacy policies that allow them to sell your data to third parties.

A VPN is supposed to protect your privacy, not collect your data and sell it to third parties for a profit. That’s why we strongly recommend that you stay away from untrustworthy VPNs. If you must use a free service, please stick to one of our recommended providers.

BBC iPlayer Proxy Error

Not that long ago, it was possible to unblock iPlayer with a proxy. Now, however, the BBC has a proxy blocker, so using proxies is no longer an option. People who used to use a proxy with iPlayer now need to use a VPN: it’s the only way.

Fastest VPNs for iPlayer

To watch BBC iPlayer with a VPN, you need a VPN that provides fast connections to the UK. All of the VPNs in this guide have been carefully chosen because they have everything you need to stay secure and watch iPlayer. To make sure you get the best privacy, we recommend the OpenVPN encryption protocol. If your VPN has OpenVPN TCP and UDP, go for TCP as this will give you slightly better speeds for streaming iPlayer in HD.

Unblocking iPlayer on iPads, iPhones and other mobile devices

All of the VPNs in this guide are compatible with both Android and iOS devices. As such, you’ll have no problems watching iPlayer outside of the UK on your devices. What’s more, all of the VPNs in this article allow you to use the service on three or more devices at once. That means that you can unblock iPlayer on a smartphone, tablet, and laptop simultaneously.

To use a VPN on a mobile device, please be sure to download the right version from your VPN provider’s downloads page once you’ve subscribed.

BBC iPlayer VPN: Conclusion

No matter whether you’re an expat, a student learning English, or just a massive fan of UK TV, watching iPlayer outside the UK is possible!

However, when it comes to unblocking iPlayer, a VPN is the only solution; iPlayer proxy services no longer work (and result in a proxy error message). The VPNs in this guide have been selected because they are trustworthy, reliable, and provide fast enough connections to stream iPlayer online in HD quality. No matter which BBC show you want to watch online, the VPNs in this guide allow you to do it securely on any device.

All of the VPNs in this guide unblock BBC iPlayer, so you can subscribe to any of them to access BBC channels. The VPNs higher on the list do a better job and have slightly faster speeds.

  1. Hi – thanks so much for the great article! I’ve learned a lot from it

I’m actually only interested in listening to the iPlayer Radio app while abroad – while I can get most stations fine I can’t always get 5LiveExtra. Would I still need a paid-for VPN for this? I’m loathe to spend money just in case it doesn’t work 🙂

    Thanks so much!

    Len

  2. VYPR and IPvanish stopped working for me in last week. So from other comments stating that Buffered and Express not working this article is rather out of date!

Anyone using Nord? or any other VPN that is working??

    Sad 🙂

    1. Hi Glenn,

The situation changes rapidly, so keeping this page 100% up-to-date is hard. FWIW, Buffered tells us that:

“At buffered we have a fairly good solution which we know works. Users experiencing problems should tell customer service, but BBC iPlayer is working now, and we should get new ips every day. So unless the service goes down that provides new IPs for us, we should be ok.”

We have reached out to the other providers for a comment.

  3. Why doesnt someone at the bbc develop a VPN that allows people who live abroad to watch bbc and just charge for it? That way, everyone wins! With more people moving around between countries it makes sense to do something like this.

    1. Hi emma,

I think the problem is that the BBC makes a great deal on money selling its content to overseas TV networks, and these networks require exclusivity for the region they cover…

  4. I have been with Buffered for several months but have been unable to access BBC IPLAYER for the last month, despite endless attempts following their recommendations and an enormous amount of wasted time. I am about to cancel my subscription. Despite the fact that I have had almost no access for the last month, they are refusing to reimburse it.

    1. Hi Clara,

I contacted Buffered about this and was told:

“It’s been working since Friday again. And occasionally before that. We’ve constantly told users about issues and communicated about it.”

    2. I can assure you that it is not working.
I tried again today and several times yesterday before deciding to cancel (which I have not yet done). Despite my IP address showing as the UK, I am getting the message from the BBC that the content is not available in my location.
I have signed up for the 3 day free trial with IVPN and that is working fine.

    3. I have subscription to VYPR VPN to access BBC iPLayer from Australia. It worked for a few weeks and than I was blocked. VYPR VPN offered me generic assistance – but that did not help and I still cannot download or stream BBC iPlayer programmes.

Be careful if you take out a VPN subscription in order to watch BBC iPlayer programmes. It’s a waste of money. BBC still blocks you and you will not be able to watch BBC programmes.

      1. David,

It’s a cat=and-mouse game. VprVPN may find a way around the problem, or it may not. It is safest to buy VP{N subscriptions one month at a time if you want to watch iPlayer or Netflix, but it does mean loosing out on some great bullk-time subscription discounts.

  5. I’ve just downloaded Express VPN and it does not work with The BBC, so that’s a waste of $14. I can add it to the list of other VPNs that don’t work with The BBC iPlayer including Astrill and Pure VPN. why doesn’t The BBC find a way to monetise it’s content foe expats ? I’d far rather pay them than a VPN provider

    1. Hi Dan,

Have you contacted its 24/7 support about this? I know with US Netflix ExpressVPN always has servers that work, but they don’t like to shout about it. Support will tell you which servers to use, though, and the same is probably true of iPlayer.

  6. I’ve been using TunnelBear for quite some time, most of the time with no problem whatsoever. Alas, all things good come to the end, and since late September TunnelBear is experiencing problems with iPlayer, suggested fixes, one after another did not work, and ultimately TunnelBear customer service turned out to be able to do little more than to cancel my account and organise for refund, though without my request, consent and authorisation. Better to leave them now than experience more frustration.

    1. Hi PS,

I was about say, at least it gave you a refund, but not so good it you didn’t ask for one. Many VPNs still work with iPlayer, but it is a cat and mouse game.

    2. I have been using VPN services for almost 4 years specifically to watch Uk TV programs. To begin with it was straight forward making the connection and watching the BBC either live or on IPlayer. This year things have changes significantly as the BBC is shutting down VPN servers at a faster pace than ever before. To begin with I just changed from one VPN service provider to another and managed several months on each without too much trouble. The VPN services I have had and the service I currently use are on the top recommended list. however the situation has changed in recent weeks and I am finding it near impossible to make a connection without the BBC recognising my true location and stopping any attempt to view programs. I would strongly advise any potential customer of a vpn service provider to take a ONE month subscription and check it out.

      1. Hi Alex,

I agree. Take out a one month subscription at a time and/or take advantage of any free deals and money back guarantees available. If you wish to access streaming services that bock VPN users (such as iPlayer), I would recommend not taking out annual subscriptions, as the situation can change fast.

    1. Hi tom,

I suggest you contact ExressVPN to verify which servers are currently working for BBC iPLayer.

  7. Concerning Douglas Crawford’s comment above that “you need to clear cookies because BBC stores a cookie about you using a VPN once and then doesn’t let you in again.”

Please can you elaborate on this. Are you saying that Buffered (or any other VPN users) should be regularly “clearing” cookies left by the BBC, and if so how? I use Safari on a Mac, so do I choose Preferences>Privacy>Manage Website Data>Select BBC website>click Remove all. If so, will that action reduce tracking, or log me out of websites or change the BBC’s website behavior in any way? I’m not a technician but this is what I read on Apple’s website about Safari for macOS Sierra and their page on Manage Cookies & Website Data.

    1. This info came to me third party from a VPN’s tech team who told me that cookies left by the BBC had been causing the VPN to stop working. They told me that deleting the cookies fixed the issue. Like you say, it is likely that deleting the cookies left on your browser by the BBC will delete details about who you are, which means you might have to log in again. However, if iPlayer stops working with your VPN it seems like a good idea to try it? If the iPlayer IS working with your VPN, then I would advise against clearing the cookies as that way it will all keep running smoothly and BBC will remember who you are. As far as I can tell you only need to delete the cookies if your VPN isn’t unblocking BBC iPlayer (and you know that it should).

  8. As of the end of the summer 2017, BBC iPlayer (video) now REQUIRES that you REGISTER and logon to use the player, and it now blocks any one using a vpn.

Doesnt matter if you use uk postcode. apparently it is now checking your email against the tv license list and thus you are blocked.

    its a sad day

BBC is missing out on a huge income stream for those who would pay for their programming.

    1. Hi Southern gal,

The BBC is requiring that you register for iPlayer, but it is not checking your email against a license list. It has, in fact, promised that it will not do this, which makes sense as most households have a number of family members – each of is supposed to register. iPlayer has been attempting to block VPNs for some time now, but in our tests most still work fine. We are currently working on a system to keep up-to-date with which services work for iPlayer, US Netflix (and maybe some others), so watch this space!

      1. Hi Margaret,

They should all work. With Express you may need to jump on its Live Chat to ask which servers are best.

    1. Hi Michael,

We are currently working on a system to keep up-to-date with which services work for iPlayer, US Netflix (and maybe some others). Watch this space!

  9. NordVPN had some minor issues in the middle of the month but so now it’s working without any issues. Also it works for Netflix on all US servers what I’ve found useful as you could connect to the nearest server

    1. Thanks for the update, I have flagged this up with our team for further investigation. Have you tried using various UK servers? The BBC now requires you to also log in, so you will need to create a fake account with a UK address to use iPlayer from now on.

  10. Yeah…I have have had Buffered for the past 12 months and after about 1 month BBC was on to the fact I was using a VPN and denied access so, while I can’t speak for other VPN’s, Buffered shouldn’t be on your list of products that will get around that issue.
    Cheers

    Stew

    1. Hi Stew,

My colleague has this to say: “I use buffered for iplayer every week… you need to clear cookies because BBC stores a cookie about you using a VPN once and then doesn’t let you in again.”

  11. This wouldn’t be my preferred choice as its Media streamer DNS, that you can apply to your router, can only work for US streaming services, so those who want UK services are left out. Express VPN told me this is their only downside and they are hoping to make it available to other regions soon. That is what I love about Unlocator as its Media DNS can be applied to many regions. It seems this website may be getting commission from this company as it’s certainly not the best VPN service out there as it’s very America-centric.
