Foxtel is a premium TV service available through set-top boxes. It is provided via cable, satellite or the internet. Foxtel was created by News Corp, which also started up Sky Broadcasting. News Corp ported over the platform used by Sky to help Foxtel get off the ground quickly. The availability of Foxtel over the internet follows the successful Sky service format. However, whereas Sky is available in the UK, Foxtel is exclusively available in Australia.

Until recently, Foxtel’s main web offering was called Foxtel Go. However, in June 2017 that service rebranded to become the Foxtel app. You only need to install an app to watch the service on a mobile device. On a laptop or desktop computer, you can watch videos through a browser-embedded player.

There are two main requirements if you want to use Foxtel over the internet. First of all, you must be a resident of Australia in order to subscribe. Secondly, you need to be physically located in Australia.

You can read more about Foxtel, the types of subscription that it offers and why it restricts access to people in Australia later on in this report. First, here’s a tip on how to get around those Foxtel restrictions so that you can take advantage of your subscription anywhere in the world – get a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN can make it look like you’re in Australia, even when you’re actually overseas. This simple trick will fool the Foxtel servers into letting you watch videos from the Foxtel website.

Not every VPN works with Foxtel. The company knows that people use VPNs to try to defeat its access restrictions. As such, it has set up programs on its server to try to block people from using them. Don’t worry. There are a few VPN services that can still get you into Foxtel online to watch videos, even when you’re outside Australia. Check out our list of the five best VPNs for Foxtel for further details.

You get access to servers in 60 countries with VPNArea, and Australia is on that list. The entertainment sites of each of those 60 countries are open to you, because VPNArea always gets through VPN detection systems at video services. This is also a good VPN service if you want to download with peer-to-peer (P2P) networks because VPNArea is headquartered in Switzerland, where downloading copyrighted material for free is legal if it's just for personal viewing. The company keeps no activity logs.

3. Best VPN for Foxtel: NordVPN

The company has servers in 61 countries, including Australia. This VPN can get past the proxy detection systems of just about every video service where it has servers, including Netflix and Amazon Prime.

The two-year subscription offer gives a sensationally cheap monthly price, but you have to be prepared to pay for the whole two years upfront. The company is fine with customers sharing an account with friends. You get an allowance of six simultaneous connections.

4. Best VPN for Foxtel: VyprVPN

PROS:
  • Three-day free trial
  • Servers in 58 countries, including Australia
  • Proprietary cloaking technology
  • Good for P2P
  • Automatic WiFi protection
CONS:
  • Low encryption security with Basic plan

VyprVPN can get you into many video streaming services. It has servers in Australia and 57 other countries. VyprVPN has two levels of service, but you need to focus on the Premium plan. This is because the Basic service doesn't include Chameleon. VyprVPN developed Chameleon as a proprietary cloaking system. It scrambles the contents of internet requests and messages to make them unrecognizable as VPN traffic. This helps VyprVPN get through the VPN detection systems on video streaming sites. This success is demonstrated by the VPN's ability to get its customers access to Netflix, which has very thorough VPN detection procedures.

Give this VPN a good kick of the tires by using the three-day free trial. You won't get a refund after those three days have expired.

5. Best VPN for Foxtel: PrivateVPN

PrivateVPN Homepage
PROS:
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Servers in 55 countries, including Australia
  • No logs
  • P2P allowed
  • Allowance of six simultaneous connections
CONS:
  • Can't get into all video streaming services

PrivateVPN is a Swedish-based VPN service that has servers in 55 countries, including Australia. The service gives you an allowance of six simultaneous connections, so you can have lots of devices doing different things on the internet all at the same time and protect them all with this VPN.

The company doesn't keep any logs of its users' activities. As such, if you've given up on trying to get a Foxtel Now subscription from abroad, you could use PrivateVPN to protect your identity while you download the company's content with P2P networks instead. The technical support team is good and can use remote control software to fix any problems that you might experience with the VPN.

Best VPNs for Foxtel: Considerations

Foxtel Services

The Foxtel app is completely free of charge. However, it’s only available to Foxtel customers who subscribe to a home TV package in Australia. This is exactly the same as the conditions for access to Sky Go in the UK and HBO GO in the US. Also like Sky and HBO, Foxtel operates another website to deliver video to customers who don’t have a home TV package with the company. In the case of Sky, that service is called NowTV. HBO has HBO NOW. Foxtel operates Foxtel Now.

Foxtel Now is not a free service – you have to subscribe in order to access videos. The fact that you don’t need a home subscription in Australia in order to sign up might make you think that people from outside Australia can access the service. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The server checks your physical location when you try to sign up. If you aren’t in Australia, it won’t let you in.

A VPN can fix that problem, but Foxtel has two more checks to root out foreign viewers. You have to enter a home address in order to get the service. That address must be in Australia. You could get around that requirement by putting in a fake address or the address of an Australian friend. However, the last sign up requirement pretty much ends all dreams of getting a Foxtel Now account from abroad. You have to pay through a debit or credit card that is linked to an Australian bank account.

As such, if you don’t have a home address and bank account in Australia, you should forget about trying to get a Foxtel account.

Access for Australians

If you’re Australian and have the Foxtel service at home, you can access the Foxtel app over the internet. However, you have to be in Australia to do so. If you’re planning on going abroad for a long time, the chances are that you’ll probably give up your home subscription to Foxtel. This means you’ll lose the access to the Foxtel app. In that case, before you sell your house or end the rental agreement on your apartment, sign up for Foxtel Now. Then, when you head overseas, you can still keep up with Foxtel programming. You’ll need a VPN to get around the block on overseas access to the service.

Foxtel stops people from accessing its videos from abroad because it has to. The company signs agreements with the producers of movies and shows. Those contracts contain restrictions on where Foxtel can show that content. For example, HBO produces Game of Thrones, but only shows it in the US on its home channel packages, HBO Go and HBO NOW. HBO doesn’t operate in Australia, so it has sold the Australian rights for Game of Thrones to Foxtel. It wouldn’t want Foxtel delivering that show over the internet to viewers in the US, because that would cannibalize the producer’s home market.

HBO also won’t let Foxtel show Game of Thrones over the web to people in the UK because it got a ton of money from Sky on the promise that only that company would be allowed to deliver the show in that territory. Broadcast rights contracts have to be very tight in order to prevent the internet collapsing the whole system of entertainment resales.

Best VPN for Foxtel: Conclusion

Part of the obligations written into Foxtel’s contracts with entertainment producers is the duty to use every means possible to protect the copyright conditions of videos in the agreement. This includes taking people to court for illegal downloading in that territory and preventing customers from getting at the video from overseas.

The VPNs in our list all have servers in Australia. Foxtel’s VPN detection systems are comprehensive; few VPNs make the grade. Having a server in Australia isn’t enough to get customers into Foxtel Now or the Foxtel app from abroad.

Any of the services on our list of the five best VPNs for Foxtel will get you in. Not only that, just by switching VPN servers, you can also get into any other video streaming service in the world, just as long as you have an account with that video website.

If you don’t have a subscription to Foxtel but still want to watch Game of Thrones, you could consider downloading the series with the BitTorrent protocol. Although this is illegal and we do not condone it, the VPNs on our list are excellent privacy services that will hide your identity and keep you safe from prosecution.
