The Indian government restricts access to a lot of websites on moral and religious grounds. Dating sites, escort services, and pornography are all blocked by Indian ISPs. Politically sensitive content and video streaming sites (like Pirate Bay or Putlocker) are also blocked. It is also possible to be fined for Torrenting copyrighted content. Luckily, with a VPN, Indian residents can overcome government censorship while also gaining the necessary digital privacy to do anything they want online.

India VPN: FAQs

What is a VPN for India?

A Virtual Private Network is an online service that does two things. Firstly, it allows subscribers to pretend to be anywhere in the world. This is achieved by connecting to a VPN server in a specific country. This does a number of things: it conceals the VPN user’s real location, it overcomes local censorship, and it allows people to access websites and services that are usually only available in a foreign country.

Secondly, a reliable VPN provides strong military grade encryption. This part of the service scrambles all the data coming and going from the VPN user’s devices. The result is that Internet Service Providers (ISPs), the government, and hackers (on public WiFi, for example) cannot access any data. This creates a perfect bubble of digital privacy, which stops ISPs, the government, and websites, from tracking what you have done online.

A VPN for India is simply a VPN that works excellently in India. There are well over 850 VPNs on the market, and the vast majority are terrible services that are a total real rip off. That is why we have carefully tested and pinpointed the best VPNs for India – so that you can get a good service first time – instead of wasting your money.

Why use a VPN in India?

In India, there is an ongoing debate about digital privacy. The Aadhaar card system is incredibly invasive, and the government backs the system completely. In fact, even since an Indian court ruled that digital privacy was a fundamental human right last year, the government has still persisted on snooping on citizens and pushing the Aadhaar system.

With strong censorship, fines for copyright theft – and a judgemental moral stance – anybody who values freedom and digital privacy can’t do without a VPN in India. An India VPN is the most versatile online tool on the market, and for just a few dollars a month, anybody in India can enjoy the whole, unrestricted internet in complete privacy.

When looking for a VPN for India it is important to keep a few considerations in mind:

Location

Firstly, and most obviously, you will want a VPN that has a network of servers all over the world. Some VPNs only have a few servers: this means you can pretend to be in only those few nations. The VPNs we have selected all have massive networks of reliable VPN servers. This means you get a lot of choices and can pretend to be anywhere you want.

Connection Speeds

Next, it is important for those servers to be fast. Slow VPN servers are a nightmare because you can’t do data-intensive tasks like streaming in HD or gaming. The vast majority of VPNs have extremely slow servers, which are only good for surfing the web and looking at news sites and the like. Our recommendations all have tier-1 networks of super-fast servers.

Privacy and Encryption

Not every VPN was created equally. Some VPNs have poor privacy policies that allow them to store records of what you have done online. Some VPNs even sell those records to third parties to create extra revenue. This is extremely concerning because those logs could later be used to find out what you did online. This is the exact opposite of what a VPN is supposed to do because a VPN is supposed to provide digital privacy!

Next, a VPN should provide strong encryption. Again, this is a place where VPNs can vary massively. Some VPNs provide outdated encryption that governments know how to crack.

The VPNs in this guide have all been carefully selected because they have a strong privacy policy that promises not to keep vital logs that could be used against you. In addition, these services have all been carefully tested and are known to provide strongly implemented OpenVPN encryption (our recommended protocol). That means that these VPNs will definitely provide the privacy that you need: without any concerns about your browsing records being made available at a later date.

Indian VPN Servers

In addition to pretending to be all over the world, some users may want to use an Indian VPN server. This will allow them to encrypt their data and gain privacy from their ISP: even when they use Indian websites. This is an important part of a VPN for India, which is why all the VPNs in this article provide at least one server location in India. In fact, most of our recommended VPNs give you a choice of  VPN servers in India.

How to choose the right India VPN for you?

If you search online for “VPN India”: you will get a lot of options. That is because the VPN market is highly saturated, with providers all fighting to get your money. Sadly, not many of those services provide exceptional services. Most are slow, unreliable, have bad privacy policies, and provide outdated or badly implemented encryption. For that reason, getting a VPN can be risky! You could end up paying for a service that isn’t actually protecting you.

Due to the political situation in India, and the dogma surrounding subjects like the LGBT movement and gambling, it is vital that you select a top-of-the-range VPN.

The good news is that all of the VPNs in this article have been carefully selected for use in India. This means that you are free to get any of these five VPNs for India. Just be careful to read the summaries for each VPN carefully, because they all differ ever so slightly. If you want the very best VPN – then go for our top recommendation ExpressVPN.

If you don’t need the very best – and prefer to save a little bit of money – then feel free to go for another option: these are all world-class services that won’t let you down!

Alternatives to VPNs for India

It is possible to overcome censorship from within India by using a proxy. Website proxies and web browser proxies will let you unblock sites. However, they will not provide the privacy that a VPN also provides. For this reason, it is much riskier to use a Proxy. A top-of-the-range VPN is a unique solution that provides high speeds and privacy. Nothing compares.

Another option for unblocking content is Smart DNS. This is a technology that is quite similar to a VPN. However, again, it doesn’t provide the privacy that a VPN provides. The good news is that some the VPNs in this list do throw in a free Smart DNS service. That means you can use smart DNS and VPN at the same time!

How to Unblock HotStar outside India

HotStar is an Indian digital and mobile streaming service owned by Star India. It is an excellent IPTV streaming service, that many Indian people love. The good news is that with a VPN for India, anyone, anywhere, can watch HotStar online. If you usually live in India but are currently on vacation, working abroad, or studying overseas: you can use an Indian VPN server to pretend to be in India.

The result is that you can watch HotStar, Star Sports, or any other Indian TV streaming site. In addition, you can access Indian online banking or any other geo-restricted service from India.

Best VPN for India: Conclusion

When using a VPN in India, you want a service that is ultra secure. That way you can do what you want online without fear of being snooped on by the government. Some VPNs have very weak security that may allow your real IP address to leak out, thus exposing your data.

The VPNs for India in this article, are all premium services that are tried and trusted. They are highly subscribed all over the world: with plenty of happy customers already living in India. These VPNs take customer care seriously and will help you to do anything you want online. They also provide money back guarantees so that you can test the services risk-free.

At the end of the day, we believe everybody should have an uncensored internet experience. That is why we are excited to be able to help people from all over the world to find VPNs that are good value for money. We are sure there is something here for everyone! So do take another careful look at the summaries before deciding on the best VPN for you. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us by leaving a message below.

  1. Mouhurtik Ray says:

Hi I want A Vpn which can Get me 10 GB DATA in 1 GB Plan From isp
    Which one should I go??

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Mouhurtik,

I’m afraid this is a common misconception about VPNs. VPNs will hide what you get up to the internet, are great for bypassing censorship, will allow you to watch overseas TV services, and will protect you when using public WiFi. What they cannot do is bypass your ISP’s data allowance plans.

  2. Ajay kumar says:

I am also from India n I want to know does these 5 best vpn service suggested by you will works at airtel or jio isp services?

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Ajay kumer,

Yes, VPN services work with all ISPs.

  3. Frank says:

    Hi,

I am from India. I am planning to opt for a VPN service.
My use-cases are overall security and accessing country-specific contents(basically contents not available in India).

I checked the reviews for VPN unlimited and felt it is decent.

Do you suggest to go for it? Will it be a worthy investment.

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Frank,

Sorry, but I have removed a rival website’s affiliate link. If you have read the reviews and VPN Unlimited seems to fit your needs, then go for it. The price you quoted seems very reasonable.
