With an India VPN, you can unblock politically sensitive content and news, gambling services, adult content and dating sites, without fear of being tracked by the government. You can also unblock regional content that is supposed to be inaccessible, like Netflix US or the UK’s iPlayer.

Our experts have reviewed more than 150 VPNs over the past five years in search of the best VPNs for India. If you’re in a rush, you will find the best VPN services for India below. For in-depth information on any of these services – please scroll down.

VPN India: FAQs

In our 5+ years reviewing VPN services we have encountered a while host of common misconceptions. Below we look to shed some light on Indian VPNs, so you can make a more informed decision. Of course, a fundamental understanding is always a good place to start. If you’re new to the world of VPNs, take a moment to look over our VPNs for beginner’s guide.

What is a VPN?

In short, A VPN is an online service that allows you to:

  • Hide what you get up to on the internet from others.
  • Get around blocks and other forms of censorship.
  • Appear to be in another country to access services such as US Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
  • Download and file share safely.
  • Use public WiFi hotspots safely and securely.

You connect to a VPN server using strong encryption which prevents your ISP, government, or WiFi hackers, from seeing your data. This VPN server also acts as a middle man between you and the internet.

Your ISP cannot see what you do on the internet, and websites on the internet cannot see your real IP address. If you connect to a VPN server in another location you look like you are in that location. This is great for accessing services that are restricted to just one country or bypassing geo-restrictions imposed by your government.

For more information on using a vpn to unblock US netflix or other services, check out our guide to changing your location online.

Why use a VPN in India?

The Indian government has severely invasive policies when it comes to what people can and cannot see online.

The Indian Telegraph Act, 1883 allows law enforcement agencies to monitor and intercept communications. DRDO NETRA, another Indian mass surveillance project, uses AI to monitor suspicious calls made by VoIP services like Skype. Lawful Intercept and Monitoring (LIM) is yet another surveillance program which the Indian government uses to intercept records of voice calls, SMS messages, and cellular data traffic.

This is mass surveillance at its most extreme and anybody who values their digital privacy is strongly advised to protect themselves with a VPN. In India, VPN services are the only way to regain control of your digital footprint.

With so many agencies and individuals looking to capture your data, you can’t be blamed for making security your key concern when shopping for an Indian VPN. A great place to start is our most secure VPN and no logs VPN guides.

What makes a great VPN?

For just a few dollars a month, anybody in India can enjoy an unrestricted internet in complete privacy. Let’s take a look at the most important features to consider when getting choosing an online VPN for India:

VPN server locations

In order to get the most out of your Indian VPN, you are going to want a VPN with a lot of server locations. The more locations the VPN provider has, the more places you can pretend to be (geo-spoofing). This will allow you to unblock content from around the world!

Certain services are tougher on VPN usage than others and the likes of Netflix will actively look to block VPNs. As such, it’s important you pick the best VPN services available. Take a look at our guides below for more information:

Connection speeds

The vast majority of VPNs on the market use substandard server networks that provide sluggish speeds. In order to enjoy your VPN experience, the servers must be lightning fast. The VPNs we have recommended all have “tier1” networks of servers that will let you do data-intensive tasks such as gaming, streaming in HD, torrenting, and anything else you can think of.

If speeds are your primary concern when choosing a VPN, take a look at our fastest VPNs list for a more in-depth look.

Privacy and encryption

Although unblocking content is one of that main reason for wanting a VPN in India, privacy is actually just as important. The Indian government monitors what everybody does online by snooping on their web browsing habits. In fact, according to Freedom House’s 2017 report, it is “violations of user rights” that is the most oppressive part of India’s “freedom of the net” score.

What does this mean? If you access a website that is censored by the government without using a VPN, your ISP and the government will find out. You could be fined, and perhaps even get in more serious trouble. This risk isn’t worth taking, which is why the encryption provided by our recommended VPNs is so important.

These recommended VPNs have watertight privacy policies and strong military grade (OpenVPN) encryption, which will stop anybody in their tracks if they try to track you or snoop on you.

If you are new to protecting your digital privacy please check out our Ultimate Privacy Guide and no log VPN guide.

Choosing the right VPN

There are over 850 VPNs on the market and the vast majority have poor privacy policies, outdated encryption and slow networks. In addition they also fail to unblock tons of awesome content from around the world.

The VPNs in this guide, on the other hand, are the best of the best. These services are all very similar to each other and you will be happy with any of them; however, they do all differ slightly. Please take your time to read our honest summaries carefully, and perhaps even to check out the individual VPN reviews that we have made.

If you want the very best VPN – then go for our top recommendation ExpressVPN. However, if you want to spend a bit less, the other VPNs are also superb!

Proxy services in India

Yes, you can use a proxy service to overcome censorship in India. However, more and more websites are wising up to proxies and using proxy blocking software to maintain restrictions.

Another option for unblocking content is Smart DNS. However, like a proxy service, Smart DNS does not provide encryption and therefore both options can jeopardize your privacy. The good news is that some of the VPNs in this list also throw in a free Smart DNS service. That means you can use smart DNS and VPN at the same time!

How to Unblock HotStar

HotStar is an Indian digital and mobile streaming service owned by Star India. It is a superb online streaming service that many people around the world want to access.

If you live outside of India, or you are on vacation, a VPN to India will let you connect to a server in India so that you can Unblock HotStar or Star Sports from anywhere!

As well as being able to access Hotstar, a VPN will also allow you to unblock other sports, for example you can live stream the 2018 world cup from anywhere in the world. To find out more see our world cup live stream free guide.

Conclusion

The Indian government has some of the most draconian surveillance programs on the planet. Despite various courts ruling in favor of the right to digital privacy, the government continues with with its invasive practices.

A VPN is a double-edged sword that allows people to overcome the frustrating censorship and overreaching surveillance imposed by the government. As long as you don’t accidentally fall for a rip off VPN, we believe that VPNs offer fantastic value for money. They are a versatile tool that not only protect your privacy, but combat censorship.

A VPN will let you unblock just about anything online that you can think of – and because our recommendations are all VPNs with a free trial period or money back guarantee – you can take any of these VPNs for a test run without risking a rupee!

    1. Hi Mouhurtik,

I’m afraid this is a common misconception about VPNs. VPNs will hide what you get up to the internet, are great for bypassing censorship, will allow you to watch overseas TV services, and will protect you when using public WiFi. What they cannot do is bypass your ISP’s data allowance plans.

  1. I am also from India n I want to know does these 5 best vpn service suggested by you will works at airtel or jio isp services?

  2. Hi,

I am from India. I am planning to opt for a VPN service.
My use-cases are overall security and accessing country-specific contents(basically contents not available in India).

I checked the reviews for VPN unlimited and felt it is decent.

Do you suggest to go for it? Will it be a worthy investment.

    1. Hi Frank,

Sorry, but I have removed a rival website’s affiliate link. If you have read the reviews and VPN Unlimited seems to fit your needs, then go for it. The price you quoted seems very reasonable.
