Roku is a streaming TV and media player that has enjoyed significant success and popularity since its initial launch in 2012. It is available in a number of forms, including portable streaming sticks, set-top boxes, and even as a smart TV! Every type of available hardware performs the same function: it allows you access to both streaming and on-demand content via channels that are selectable with the use of a remote control. Thanks to its partnership with popular streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, there’s no shortage of excellent content available at the click of a button.

Sadly, much like the streaming services themselves, select channels and content are inaccessible due to geo-restrictions. In response to this, consumers are becoming increasingly aware that they can use a VPN service to unblock that content, thus getting the most out of their Roku system.

Best VPN for Roku

  • ProsPROS
  • Servers in 87 countries and counting
  • Works with Netflix
  • 24/7 customer support
  • Fast speeds
  • Easy to use software
  • ConsCONS
  • A little pricey

ExpressVPN consistently ranks number one on our VPN comparison lists, and for good reason. The US-based provider is a leader in the industry, providing a service that is fast, secure, and incredibly user-friendly. This makes it an excellent pick for those seeking a VPN to configure with their Roku device.

Other streaming-friendly qualities of ExpressVPN? It boasts one of the largest server networks in the business, at 87 countries and counting, and is one of the few providers that can still bypass Netflix’s persistent blocking of VPN services. There’s also a free Smart DNS service included with every subscription, as well as a dedicated router, which makes configuring ExpressVPN with Roku even easier.

ExpressVPN is without a doubt the ideal VPN for Roku and we recommend it as our top choice with confidence. VyprVPN

4.5/5

VyprVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • Great security
  • Fast speeds
  • Servers in over 50 countries
  • Exclusive proprietary software
  • Keeps no usage logs
  • ConsCONS
  • A bit pricey
  • No P2P support

Coming in second on our list of the best VPNs for Roku is VyprVPN. The Switzerland-based service is renowned for its easy-to-use and stylish software, which is proprietary and completely exclusive to VyprVPN. It’s also known for its stern stance on online privacy and security, which is exemplified by its no logs policy, tough 256-bit AES encryption, and NAT Firewall.

Its focus on security doesn’t mean VyprVPN is not streaming-friendly. On the contrary, its blazing fast speeds and Tier-1 server network – which currently stands at 200,000+ global IPs, 700+ servers, and 50+ server locations across five continents – make it a great pick for those seeking a VPN to stream media on Roku. CactusVPN

4.2/5

CactusVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • Keeps no usage logs
  • Reasonably priced
  • Fast speeds
  • Integrated Smart DNS
  • ConsCONS
  • Does not accept Bitcoin

Our third Roku VPN pick, CactusVPN, is a great choice for those looking for a more economic option. With plans as low as $4.99 per month, it’s one of the cheapest VPNs on the market. That said, its low price doesn’t come at the cost of a good service.

CactusVPN boasts decent features that are sure to appease both security and streaming aficionados. It keeps no usage logs and uses excellent encryption. It also supports P2P downloading, is quite speedy, and has an integrated Smart DNS option on offer. The caveats of CactusVPN? It doesn’t accept Bitcoin and doesn’t have the biggest server network out there, even if it covers all the popular areas like the US and the UK.

Give CactusVPN a go today to see if it’s a good fit for your Roku device. It won’t break the bank and is risk-free thanks to the provider’s 30-day money-back guarantee!

NordVPN

4/5

NordVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • No logs policy
  • Based in Panama
  • Servers in over 47 countries
  • Easy to use
  • ConsCONS
  • Medium speeds

Panama-based provider NordVPN is fast becoming renowned in the VPN industry for its stellar security features. This makes it a great option for Roku users who prioritize their online security over streaming. With a strict no logs policy, excellent encryption, a kill switch, and DNS leak protection, it is built to ensure that you and your data are always safe and secure.

The biggest drawback of NordVPN? While we haven’t experienced it personally, users have been known to report lackluster speeds. They’re not the worst in the market by far, but could be a deal breaker for those who can’t stand even a second of lag. That said, NordVPN does try to make up for it with streaming-friendly features like servers in 47 countries and a very generous six simultaneous connections policy. Give NordVPN a try today to see if it’s the VPN for you!

Considerations

Using Roku with a VPN

In addition to choosing the best VPN service for you, there’s also the matter of how you physically go about setting up your VPN for a Roku device. The problem is that even with the latest and greatest Roku devices – like the Roku Ultra or the Roku Streaming Stick (mentioned in greater detail at the end of the article) – it still isn’t possible to utilize the Roku hardware itself to create a VPN connection.

Instead, you’re going to need to enable a VPN connection on a device external to your Roku player. There are two basic options to accomplish this: either set up a VPN connection on your wireless router (you may need to upgrade to DD-WRT or Tomato for this support), or share your internet and VPN connection on your laptop with the Roku device.

Either way, the VPN connection is the crux of unblocking geo-restricted and censored content.

The Best Roku Media Streamers

Finding the best VPN for Roku is as challenging as finding the best media streamers, because there is a seemingly endless number of options and alternatives. To help you make an educated decision and avoid purchasing a lemon, we’ve compiled the latest and greatest Roku media streamers of 2017.

Roku Ultra

To put it bluntly, Roku Ultra is one of the highest-end Roku streamers available, and the box is jam-packed with the latest and greatest hardware for a smooth streaming experience. The Roku Ultra comes with a quad-core processor, and supports 4K and HDR picture quality (though you’ll need a TV compatible with 4K to get such a high-quality picture).

I also like how it includes an Ethernet port (they’re usually more reliable and faster than wireless connections), though I was disappointed to discover it’s only Fast Ethernet and not Gigabit Ethernet. And note that it does cost about $129.99, though I think the cost is justified.

Roku Streaming Stick 3600R

The next best Roku device is the Roku Streaming Stick 3600R, which carries the advantage of being small. Plus, it’s one heck of a lot cheaper than the Roku Ultra, costing just $50. Naturally, because it’s a stick, it doesn’t include an Ethernet port. All network connections are wireless, so you’d ideally want to have a fast wireless router for fast streaming.

Also, it doesn’t have comparable hardware to the Roku Ultra. Nevertheless, the Roku Stick powers up faster than other devices, and only takes about 30 seconds to boot. However, note that you’ll need to plug the stick into an HDMI port, which could look a little ugly and messy if you lack HDMI ports on the back of your TV.

Roku Premiere+

Last but not least, I wanted to give the Roku Premiere+ an honorable mention. It’s nowhere near as fast as the Roku Ultra, but hey – it’s 23% cheaper. The MSRP is only $99.99, which is about $30.00 cheaper than the Ultra, making it a decent cost-effective alternative if you’re more sensitive to price.

Like the Ultra, the Premiere+ has the ability to stream 4K HDR video. But it lacks some of the newest bells and whistles, such as voice search. Yet again, the Ethernet port on the back is only 100Mbps, and doesn’t support gigabit speeds. Still, at least it will give you the choice between hard-wired and wireless network connections.

Roku VPN: Conclusion

Streaming TV and media gadgets such as Roku is an easy, convenient way to access content from all your favorite services such as Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer through a single device. However, just like when these services are used individually, their content is often protected by geo-restrictions and only available to certain countries. To bypass this annoying blockade, all Roku users have to do is sign up with a compatible VPN provider and set it up with their Roku device. After following these simple steps, the sky is the limit in regards to how much great content you can watch via Roku in 2017!
