  • 2 simultaneous connections
  • Fast connection speeds
  • Servers in 61 countries (inc. Romania)
  • P2P: yes
  • ConsCONS

IPVanish is a VPN provider that doesn’t keep logs, and for this reason (despite being based in the US and under the jurisdiction of the NSA’s snooping) is considered a truly private and anonymous VPN. Also good news, you can pay for the service with Bitcoins (perfect for those people who want to start off the process of purchasing their VPN service in a truly anonymous manner).

Encryption protocols are industry standard, with the number 1 encryption – OpenVPN – available (we advise you to choose this protocol from the outset). NordVPN

3.8/5

NordVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • Based in Panama
  • Doesn’t keep logs
  • P2P: yes
  • Servers in 47 countries
  • VPN kill switch
  • ConsCONS
  • Above-average pricing
  • Medium speeds

If you want to surf the Internet in (near) anonymity, you can’t go wrong with NordVPN. The VPN provider promises to keep neither usage logs nor connection logs, and thanks to its Panama location – and the country’s lack of mandatory data retention laws – we’re inclined to take their word for it.

In addition to its prime location, NordVPN boasts plenty of other privacy features that are sure to lure in more security-conscious Romanians, including P2P support, a kill switch, 256-bit AES encryption, and multi-hop connections. It even supports Tor over VPN if you want to go that extra mile.

NordVPN’s connection speeds aren’t anything to write home about, but we believe that the Panamanian provider’s positives – such as its above-average security measures and its great variety and number of server locations – more than make up for this negative.

5th place

VyprVPN

3.4/5

VyprVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • Super fast connection speeds (due to own network infrastructure)
  • Servers in 36 countries
  • P2P: Yes
  • Strong Encryption
  • “Chameleon” stealth servers
  • ConsCONS
  • Must not subscribe to basic package – Encryption is not strong enough.
  • Some logs (scrubbed regularly)

VyprVPN is the VPN subsidiary of Internet giant Golden Frog. This means that the VPN comes with some distinctive advantages such as encrypted messaging. The encryption it provides is industry standard OpenVPN, which is the protocol we recommend! (as well as L2TP/IPsec and Chameleon).

The VyprVPN client software is one of the simplest to use and nicest to look at. Connection speeds are increadibly fast because it owns its own network of servers (Golden Frog), and those servers are located all over the world and everywhere yo would likely might need them (including Romania).

Unfortunately, some logs are kept for up to 30 days, and the basic plan must be avoided as it only offers the insecure PPTP protocol (do not subscribe to basic plan under any circumstances). The good news is that you are allowed 3 simultaneous connections and that the software is available on all of the most popular platforms, which means you will be able to use your VPN to stay private and secure on tablet, smartphone or laptop/PC.

Although the Pro and Premium plans do cost more, they are also one of the VPN industry leaders in terms of tech: Fully featured. With a 30-day money back guarantee – this is also a service that you can try out to see if it works!

Considerations for VPNs for Romania

A VPN service ‘spoofs’ your IP address from where you live to a country of your choice. As soon as you connect to a server in the US, for example, your IP address actually appears to be  there. For this reason, an outstanding VPN should have plenty of server location choices, like the ones on this list!

Unblocking content!

Sports events, for example, are often restricted to the region they are being played in. Another practical VPN use is for unblocking foreign TV channels like BBC iPlayer. British TV often watched by students who want to improve their English. In fact, a VPN is a great resource for anyone learning any foreign language.

Many people in Romania are also realising that even though Netflix is now available (since January) they may still also want to get a VPN. So why is Netflix and a VPN such a heavenly mix?

Bigger, Better, More… A VPN for Netflix?

Due to licensing restrictions imposed on Netflix from movie and televisions studios that create content, Netflix isn’t able to show all content in every geographic location. Subscribers from the US are lucky because even though they pay the same fee (and even less than some countries) they also get a much more varied and exciting catalogue of streaming options.

With a VPN, no matter whether you are desperate to unblock the awesome US Netflix’ catalogue: Or you have your eyes on any other geo-restricted content from around the world. You can gain unfettered access by spoofing your IP address to that region using your VPN provider’s international servers.

It is for this reason (and in order to unblock other content that might interest you) that we have been careful to only choose VPN providers with great quality servers in the US and the rest of the world.

Server Locations and Vital Connection Speeds

Because you may want to use your VPN to watch streaming video content too, we have also made absolutely certain to only include VPNs with lightning fast servers. After all, it is no good having servers in the right locations if they are much too slow to actually allow you to watch your favourite shows in HD.

All of the VPNs on our list have industry standard servers in all the most useful places: This will allow you to pretend to be wherever you prefer. Bringing an end to those annoying ‘content restricted in your country’ notices.

With fast servers located around the world, there is only one other thing that is absolutely necessary (in terms of servers) when it comes to selecting a VPN for use in Romania. Because you’ll want to use your VPN’s encryption when browsing Romanian websites too, it is absolutely essential that your VPN also has at least one server there. Rest assured, that all of the VPNs on this list have been selected because they not only have quality servers dotted around the globe but within Romania as well.

Be Careful!

As mentioned in the intro, not all VPN providers actually have what it takes to give you true privacy and anonymity. Some encryption protocols are outdated and will haphazardly give away your true IP address. Due to the fact that overreaching governments (worldwide) are passing so many laws for spying on citizens – a bad VPN simply won’t do.

Romania VPNs

VPN Encryption Protocols

Encrypted data allows users to browse the Internet without being subjected to invasive government surveillance. They also protect from would be hackers’ that could attack you on unprotected WiFi networks. A VPN is truly an all-around solution for your modern day digital privacy needs.

In this comparison list of the 5 best VPNs for Romania in 2016, we have been careful only to include trusted and respected VPN services that provide the strongest and most up to date encryption protocols, in particular, OpenVPN. OpenVPN is by far the most recommended encryption available and will make all your data truly anonymous between you and your ISP. This means that everything you do while online will remain completely private. Win!

Due to the fact that watching geo-restricted content is actually in breach of copyright laws (and in the case of unblocking US Netflix also in breach of their Terms of Service), we cannot specifically advise you to go out and do it.

However, it is also true that because strong encryption anonymizes your data – should you choose to access content that is technically illegal in Romania – your ISP will not know that you have done it! Giving you a gloriously anonymous online presence. Cool!

This is the exact reason that so many people do use VPNs for unblocking Netflix, Hulu, Spotify (and countless other geo-restricted services from around the world). With a VPN the Internet is your oyster, and the unnecessary censorship that you currently suffer from suddenly melts away.

VPN Clients

‘Clients’ are the name given to the VPN software that you will download from your preferred VPN provider’s website after deciding on it. Some software can be more complicated than others, but on the whole, all the best VPN clients do  the same job: They handle your encrypted connection to VPN company servers.

Having said that, each provider does vary a little and some have a few extra features that some users may be looking for. That is why we have carefully listed all of the VPN’s specific attributes in the reviews and relevant pros and cons sections.

So, please do be sure to look at the reviews carefully, making sure that the VPN you decide on has the specific feature you are after (peer to peer for example).

Conclusion of best Romanian VPN 2016

As you can see, there are lots of reasons to get a VPN service in 2016. In fact, here at BestVPN, we consider a VPN an absolute necessity for securely accessing the Internet. We understand that it is frustrating to be told that you can not have access to content you want to see – whether that be for educational, entertainment or informational purposes.

Value your Privacy

Access to information and privacy is something that we all value highly and in this age of connectivity and globalisation, it is something that we ought to all be living with in peace. Unfortunately, a denial of both is a symptom that is epidemic in world politics and is plaguing internet users everywhere. With a VPN you not only regain your privacy (making you truly different to the vast majority of Internet users in your area thanks to encryption), but you open up your Internet experience to the entire world’s sites.

Ultimately, the reasons that people require a VPN for privacy, of course, varies. Some people are journalists or political activists who need the safety of an anonymous Internet connection to do their job effectively. Fairly, you might feel that you have fewer reasons than those people, but in reality, privacy is something that is well worth choosing and there is no doubt that protecting your digital footprint with a VPN is an outstanding option.

– Privacy – Security – Anonymity – Accessibility –

All in all, we are sure that by getting a VPN you will have made an incredibly sound decision, and one that you will absolutely not regret and keep on thanking yourself for time to come.

So take another look at our carefully crafted 5 best VPNs for Romania 2016 list, and choose the VPN that most appeals to you. The reality is that there isn’t a bad service amongst them, and every single one provides a tried and tested service that will give you everything you need!

  1. And what ‘s about a free vpn ? I found 2.
A kill switch is a nice feature _ unfortunately rarely included.
Based in the usa , a vpn provider can be a better choice according on the quality of service:support.
One detail has been forgotten in the article/review above : the reputation_wot.

    1. Hi v13,

      – There, to be honest, very few circumstances where I would recommend a free VPN over a paid service. Free services are either very limited, or are untrustworthy.
      – It is increasingly common to see kill switches included in providers’ custom clients
      – Possibly, but this removes one of the main advantages of using a Romanian VPN server – no NSA spying
      – the reputation_wot?
