Online sports betting, casino betting, and poker have become very popular. Countries that have smoking bans have seen bingo halls close down, while online bingo sites proliferate. The high cost of membership to casinos, and the rowdy or sleazy atmosphere of betting shops, makes home-based online gambling much more attractive. Unfortunately, online gambling with sites such as Bet365 is not legal everywhere in the world.

Bet365 is aware of the restrictions placed on its business in many countries. The website is accessible everywhere. However, you won’t be able to open an account from an address in many countries. You also can’t place a bet if you have an account in a country where betting is legal, but then travel to a country where it isn’t.

The list of countries where online gambling is illegal contains some surprises. Turkey, Cuba, the Bahamas, South Korea, India, and Singapore all ban online gambling. In fact, in South Korea, citizens risk a three-year prison sentence if they  place a bet. This applies even if they did it overseas in a country where betting is legal.

The different rules in different countries are confusing. For example, in Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates, it is legal to bet on horse and camel racing. However, betting on any other event, or playing at an online casino, are illegal. In the United States, online gambling is subject to both national and state legislation. Thus it is legal in some states, such as New Jersey, but illegal in others, such as Texas.

Bet365 has its own rules. You can open an account in some countries where online gambling is illegal – India, for example. However, you can’t open account in some countries where online gambling is legal – such as France.

It takes a lot of research to discover which countries ban online gambling. However, you’re probably aware of the restrictions in your own country. You can get around those bans with a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Setting up an account with Bet365 can be difficult, however, because the company won’t allow those with an address in a location where gambling is banned to become members.

It gets even more complicated because Bet365 accepts different payment methods in different countries. You can use PayPal in the UK, but not in the Dominican Republic. The United States is a confusing patchwork of legislation, so Bet365 has completely withdrawn from that market. Bet365 lists the countries where you can open an account in the drop-down country field on the Bet365 payment page. You can bet in other countries when you travel there, but you can’t bet in countries where Bet365 won’t accept accounts.

If you already have an account at Bet365, but want to travel to a country where it won’t take bets, you can install a VPN to get around the problem. So, if you’re in Singapore, but want to place a bet, just select a VPN server in a country where betting is legal, such as the UK, then turn the VPN app on. Until you turn the VPN app off, the Bet365 computer will think that you’re in the UK and let you place bets.

Using Bet365 with a VPN: Considerations

Government Gambling Blocks

In some countries, you can’t even get through to the Bet365 website. In these instances, you don’t have to ask whether betting is legal in that location. The government internet blocks save you from the risk of breaking the law.

Different governments use different methods to block access to websites. Some use a combination of techniques to block access to certain sites. In just about all cases, it is the Internet Service Provider (ISP) that implements the blocks. Everything you do on the internet has to go through the computers of an ISP. That company is your computer’s first point of contact with the internet. Even if you’re not at home, nor using the internet service you subscribe to, an ISP still mediates your connection to the internet.

ISP Blocking Methods

ISPs have three main methods to stop access to websites. The first is address filtering. The ISP maintains a list of banned web addresses. If Bet365 is banned, the ISP simply drops any request passing through its computers that includes the address On the internet, all computers are identified by an IP address. Some address filtering systems maintain a list of banned IP addresses. Thus, rather than blocking a request because it includes, it will drop requests going to the IP address of the Bet365 server.

The mapping between web addresses and IP addresses occurs at a Domain Name System (DNS) computer. When you type into your browser, the browser goes to a DNS server to get the IP address for that URL. It then sends a request for a page to that IP address. Some ISPs manipulate the DNS entry for banned web addresses in order to implement the bans. The usual practice is to set up a ban message page and enter the IP address of that against the web addresses of the sites that the government wants to block.

The third method that ISPs use to block banned sites is content filtering. This is a good way to deal with governments that ban whole topics rather than specific websites. In this scenario, the ISP reads the messages that it sends out onto the internet on behalf of customers. It also reads the contents of incoming messages destined for customers’ computers. If the filtering software detects one of a list of banned words within a message, it doesn’t pass it on.

VPNs for Ban Evasion

VPN operating methods manage to defeat all three ISP site block strategies. When you install a VPN you get a “client” program on your computer. This program coordinates with a remote server. The client interface presents you with a list of servers. You select a server before you turn the VPN on.

When the VPN is running, all of the communications from your computer first travel out to the VPN server. This link is called a tunnel. It hides all of your traffic from the ISP. The ISP still registers that there are messages passing through its computers. However, it can’t read inside those messages and can’t see where they’re really going. This is because the VPN client encrypts each message that leaves your computer. This encryption covers not just the contents of the message, but also the address information. This encrypted message is then put inside another packet, which is addressed to the VPN server.

Those messages being diverted to the VPN server also include the calls to the DNS server. The best VPNs run their own DNS services. Thus the ISP won’t see that a message is going to a DNS server to request the IP address of As the VPN uses its own DNS reference, the ISP’s manipulation of the address doesn’t matter. Your browser will get the proper IP address of Bet365, not the address of a blocking screen.

Betting Term Blocks

If you’re in a country that bans Bet365, the ISP will be looking out for that web address and the IP address of the Bet365 server. It will also possibly be looking for the terms “bet,” “betting,” “gambling,” and “bet365” in all messages. The redirection of your messages to the VPN server means that the address of Bet365 won’t appear on any of your communications as they pass through the ISP. The contents of a request for a page – and the delivery of that page from the Bet365 server – will be entirely encrypted by the VPN. As such, the ISP’s content filters won’t detect any of the keywords that it is looking for to implement the ban.

Bet365 Blocks

The Bet365 website doesn’t allow people to place a bet if they connect from a location where it isn’t licensed to operate. The server for the site can tell where request comes from, because of its return address. Every computer connected to the internet has a unique IP address. That address can be traced to a specific location.

If the Bet365 computer detects an address in a permitted location, it returns the requested page, allowing the customer to place a bet. If the address is not in an approved country, the site returns a blocking page.

VPNs for Bet365 Blocks

When you have the VPN turned on, your requests for pages at the Bet365 website travel through the VPN server. All responses to your requests also go back to the VPN server first. Thus it can encrypt them and get them past your ISP. In order to ensure that those responses go to the VPN first, and not directly to your computer, the VPN server replaces the return address in the request to show its own IP address instead of yours.

You have to log in to your account in order to place a bet at Bet365, so the VPN isn’t hiding your identity. However, by replacing your IP address with its own, the VPN server hides your location. The Bet365 computer will read the return IP address on the request and deem that you’re in that location (which is really the location of the VPN server). If you chose a VPN server in a country where betting is legal, it will allow you to place a bet.

VPNs for Bet365: Conclusion

When choosing a VPN, you need to make sure it has servers in locations where betting is legal. Bet365 members can place bets on any sporting event anywhere in the world from their account – just as long as they don’t log in from a place where Bet365 isn’t licensed.

All of the services in our list of the five best VPNs for Bet365 will get you past ISP blocks. They all operate their own DNS servers and they all have super strong encryption that ISPs cannot crack. Remember that if you have to use a VPN to get into Bet365, online gambling is still illegal in your location. Although a VPN can get around the technical blocks on access to the site, it can’t protect you from the law. As such, be careful who you let see that you are gambling online and don’t tell anyone about your activities – you don’t want to create witnesses who could testify against you. Stay safe on the web and maintain your access to Bet365 wherever you are with a VPN.

  1. Hi there, I am in Spain and am using Vyper VPN to access online bookies. I can access all bookies except Bet 365. I started using Opera browser to access Bet 365 as that was free and it worked for a couple of weeks but that is blocked as well now. I contacted VPN area through their online chat but they couldn’t confirm if I would be able to access Bet 365. Is my only option to sign up and try it with the seven day money back guarantee or any other suggestions.

    1. Hi Brian,

As you have already discovered, the situation can change very quickly, and we simply do not have the resources to stay 100% up-to-date on this. VPNArea worked with Best365 last time we checked, but is is always a good idea to take advantage of money off guarantees and free trials in order to check a service works with the content you want to access.

    1. Hi, Bob, I did test NordVPN, but that was some time ago. Which country were you in and which server location did you select when you tried to access Bet365? Did you speak to the NordVPN help desk about the problem? They may have suggestions to work out a fix to your problem.
