5 Best Cheap VPNs

While there are many ‘FREE VPN’ services out there, we don’t recommend them since “if you’re not the buyer then you’re the product”, and more often than not you’re limited in some way or another.

Most VPN providers charge less than $10 a month, which we think is a great deal for the level of security they provide, but for this review we’ve capped the price at $7/mo, with the lowest costing just under $3/month! Of course, to get these prices, you’ll have to sign up for a longer period of time, but luckily most offer a free trial that allows you to test their services, and our reviews should also help you out. The only other way you’re going to achieve lower prices is if you plan on using a SmartDNS or OpenSSH service, both of which have plenty of caveats compared to VPN.

So now let’s look at our pick of the best cheap VPNs.

CactusVPN

4.94.94.94.94.9 4,9/5

<>

  • PROS
  • great client
  • Moldovan base
  • blazingly fast
  • CONS
  • only four countries
  • no Bitcoin

CactusVPN is a fairly new Moldovan company that ranks high in so many of our lists, and for good reason. It has a great set of software, low prices and some of the fastest speeds we’ve seen from a VPN, and all this without logs.

It’s therefore a shame that it has servers in only four countries and doesn’t accept Bitcoin, but overall it offers a fantastic service.

Mullvad

4.94.94.94.94.9 4,9/5

Pro2 Logo

  • PROS
  • accepts Bitcoin
  • no logs
  • good speeds
  • great client
  • CONS
  • some complaints about potential security lapses and performance

Mullvad is a very small Swedish VPN company, with a large server presence in Germany. Since it’s based in Sweden, it doesn’t have to keep any logs, and to further improve security it uses shared IPs. Also, if you really wish, you can even send payment via post!

Its client is superb, with DNS leak protection and a kill switch, and on top of this it allows three simultaneous connections. Unfortunately (although we haven’t experienced it ourselves), we’ve received some comments about lapses in performance.

 NordVPN

4.94.94.94.94.9 4,9/5

NordVPN Logo

  • PROS
  • no logs
  • accepts Bitcoin
  • allows P2P
  • two simultaneous connections
  • CONS
  • inconsistent connection speeds

Based in Panama, NordVPN couldn’t care less about EU or US VPN laws, which means it has an absolutely no logs policy. It offers a great range of technologies, including 256-bit AES encryption, allowing Tor and accepting anonymous payments via Bitcoin.

It features an innovative double hop system, although this does means that it suffers from inconsistent speeds. With servers across a number of countries, NordVPN is a fantastic little service that also ranks high on our Top 10, and with good reason.

Private Internet Access

4.94.94.94.94.9 4,9/5

PIA logo

  • PROS
  • no logs
  • five simultaneous connections
  • accepts Bitcoin
  • CONS
  • fast no free trial
  • US based

PIA is a high-profile provider with some of the cheapest prices on the market, so it’s a shame that it’s based in the US.

On a more positive note, its client, while basic, is excellent (just like the rest of its website) and, although it only uses less secure 128-bit encryption, this is still more than adequate.

5th place

Kepard

4.94.94.94.94.9 4,9/5

Kepard logo

  • PROS
  • 15-day free trial
  • fast
  • good client
  • unlimited traffic
  • CONS
  • some logs
  • lot of details asked for at signup

Kepard, just like CactusVPN, is a small Moldovan company with some basic yet superb products, and along with its 15-day free trial it allows two simultaneous connections.
Although its OpenVPN encryption is only 128-bit, it still serves its purpose well. With its stylish and consistent apps across a number of platforms, it provides an impressive service.

Bonus. VPN Gate

4.94.94.94.94.9 4,9/5

VPN Gate Logo

  • PROS
  • open source
  • no usage logs
  • mirror sites and daily email updates
  • CONS
  • limited European servers
  • limited European servers
  • varying quality service

Developed by the University of Tsukuba, VPN Gate is an open source solution run by volunteers. Unfortunately, this means that speeds can vary considerably and server quality changes from location to location.

However, if you’re not looking to carry out anything risqué and just want to escape government censorship, this free service could be just for you.

  1. Hi Peter,

Awesome review! I would also like you to check ZenVPN. I have been using this for a couple of months and for me their service is great. I am not so knowledgeable with technical background of different VPN’s. I just compared all the services I previously used. The good thing I liked about ZenVPN is that I can watch Hulu and Netflix. You can also test their service for free.
    Thanks! :)
