Iggy Pop to lecture ‘free music in a capitalist society’

Readers interested in copyright issues and the music industry’s place in this world of free downloads might want to put the following date in their calendar. On 13 October aging bad boy rock legend Iggy Pop is to deliver a lecture on ‘free music in a capitalist society’.

The lecture will be broadcast on BBC 6 music in honour the much loved BBC 1 DJ John Peel, who died ten years ago. The annual John Pee Lecture was inaugurated in 2011, when it was delivered by The Who frontman Pete Townsend, and has since been hosted by Billy Bragg and Charlotte Church.

Speaking of John Peel, Iggy said,

I get the feeling that John was the kind of guy who would have done his job for nothing, as long as he felt great about it. So we have that in common. Examining his life, I was interested to learn that he found his voice in large part through his wanderings in America. Sometimes it takes strange circumstances to provide a mirror in which to find yourself. I’ve never given a lecture in my life, but on the day I’m going to attempt a discussion on the subject of free music in a capitalist society. This is a struggle which never ends.

Iggy pop was frontman for The Stooges, and is often dubbed the ‘godfather of punk rock’. The Stooges received their first radio airplay in August 1969 when John Peel introduced listeners to their tack Little Doll from their eponymous debut album.

The BBC director of music said that he expected to ‘give a topical and thought-provoking speech,’ while for his part, Iggy stated that,

I’ve never given a lecture in my life, but on the day I’m going to attempt a discussion on the subject of free music in a capitalist society. This is a struggle which never ends.

Non UK citizens should be able to listen to the lecture either live or for limited time On Demand through BBC iPlayer Radio which, unlike the On demand TV service, is not restricted by geographic location.
