5 Best VPNs for Microsoft Surface Pro 3

Microsoft Surface VPN

The original Microsoft Surface was announced and released in 2012. Microsoft has since been steadily releasing a new version every year. While the original did not live up the the hype, the opposite can be said for it’s latest generation – the Surface Pro 3.

Here at BestVPN we have managed to get our hands on one of the i5 128GB models [a hefty task due to the demand in the UK].  Not only were we surprised by it’s fantastic quality but also it’s processing power. As a tablet replacement it’s a bit large but as a ‘laptop replacement’ it definitely scores plenty of points. However, we’ll leave the review up to the guys at TechRadar who have done a fantastic job of it.

Unfortunately, as with all new technologies, come new security concerns. While the initial Surface tablets used the Windows RT, the latest generation uses the more established Windows 8.1 OS. Combined with the fact that it is intended as a fully mobile device, there is every possible concern for you to want to protect yourself using a VPN. Naturally we have done this ourselves and found that luckily, it does not detract from the battery life.

So with that brief introduction out of the way here is our 5 best VPNs for the Surface Pro 3. We have selected a range that includes options for those with tighter wallets, requirement for security or necessity for speed – so make sure you read the full list to find out which is best for you.

Winner

IPVanish

4,9/5

  • PROS
  • Zero logs
  • Plenty of servers
  • Great speeds
  • Simple client
  • CONS
  • US based

IPVanish are a great company with over 15 years in managing networks. This has allowed them to develop a Tier-1 level network with great speeds and security. For their security they use shared IPs, top of the line OpenVPN and keep absolutely zero logs. They have also recently released their latest apps which perform great on Windows 8.1.

Though this VPN provider is based in the US, they offer an absolutely fantastic service and we definitely recommend using them on your brand new Microsoft Surface Pro 3.

2nd place

ExpressVPN

4,8/5

ExpressVPN Logo

  • PROS
  • Easy to use
  • Great customer service
  • Excellent speeds
  • CONS
  • Bit pricey but worth it
  • US based

ExpressVPN is one of the biggest VPN providers in the world, and with due cause. They provide fantastic support for all major platforms, top end speeds and excellent customer service. Their network spans across 78 countries and features hundreds of servers, which gives them top speeds alongside top notch security.

Unfortunately, they are based in the US so do keep some logs. They are also not the cheapest, but with their 30 day money back guarantee and brimful package we definitely recommend them.

3rd place

IronSocket

4,75/5

IronSocket Logo

  • PROS
  • Based in HK
  • Great security
  • Fast speeds
  • Up to 3 simultaneous connections
  • CONS
  • Lot of session logs (purged after 72 hours)

IronSocket is a Hong Kong based VPN provider (with servers also in Japan, Taiwan and West Coast US) which uses shared IPs, accepts anonymous payment via Bitcoins, uses 256-bit AES encryption, and allows 3 simultaneous connections.

It does keep a bit too many connection logs (no usage logs), but even these are purged after 72 hours. Being under Hong Kong (Edward Snowden’s first choice of refuge) jurisdiction offsets this somewhat. With their 7 day money back guarantee to help test their services, IronSocket is surely worth trying.

NordVPN

4,7/5

NordVPN Logo

  • PROS
  • No logs
  • Allows P2P and BitCoin payments
  • Based in Panama
  • CONS
  • Sometimes inconsistent speeds
  • No kill switch

Panama based NordVPN has no issues with either US or EU laws, putting it in a great position to run a VPN service. To match this they have great security, zero logs and securely accept BitCoin – not to mention support for Tor. They also sport plenty of servers all around the world.

Sadly, due to their double hop encryption method, they can have inconsistent speeds. Overall if you’re looking for a very secure VPN with plenty of servers and good support, then this could surely by your choice.

PIA

4,55/5

PIA Logo

  • PROS
  • Great software
  • Minimal logs
  • Cheap
  • CONS
  • No free trial
  • Based in US

While PrivateInternetAccess is one of the cheapest providers out there, it definitely doesn’t detract from the quality of their service. While they provide a very secure connection, their biggest feature has to be their amazing software which is packed full of everything: from kill switches to port forwarding. Their apps span a large range of devices and allow an amazing 5 simultaneous connections.

Unfortunately they are based in the US (so susceptible to NSA) and don’t offer a free trial, but on the whole a great service.
