Spain is the 28th largest country in the world, with a population of over 47 million. With it’s internet penetration of 72% it comes in only at 45th in the world but this is still a staggering amount. While it was one of the first countries to join the EU (in 1986) it has been hit fairly hard by the economic collapse. Though the former has resulted in the country and it’s press being ranked ‘Free’, by Freedom House, the latter has mean that it has been sliding in recent years, and there are still plenty of other reasons to use a VPN.

VPN for Spain

After discussing our favourite VPNs for Spain we will discuss issues related to freedom and internet activity that would require a person to use a VPN. Nonetheless we always recommend using a VPN as it’s a great and simple tool that helps protect you and your data while browsing online. Not to mention the fact that a VPN can allow you to watch geo-restricted channels such as Netflix and Hulu.

IPVanish

4,9/5

  • PROS
  • Numerous servers
  • Great speeds
  • Simple client
  • Absolutely no logs
  • CONS
  • US based

With over 15 years in the the network market it’s no surprise that IPVanish scores so well. With their Tier 1 network you can truly achieve some of the best speeds with them. Their security is also top notch: shared IPs, OpenVPN, zero logs and they accept BitCoin too.

While their clients might be too basic for the techies, it is great for the average person. Being based in the US isn’t great but with no logs and a well rounded service, they are surely worthy as the number 1 VPN for Spain.

IronSocket

4,85/5

IronSocket Logo

  • PROS
  • Up to 3 simultaneous connections
  • No usage logs
  • Very fast
  • Secure
  • CONS
  • Bit too many connection logs – but purged after 72 hours

IronSocket is a Hong Kong based VPN company with plenty to boast about. Their location allows to carry out very little logging, not to mention it puts them outside of both EU and US jurisdiction. They have servers in loads of countries and provide fantastic speeds and security.

It is a slight shame that they keep numerous connections logs, even if it’s for performance monitoring, but overall they score very well in every considerable department.

Buffered

4,75/5

Buffered Logo

  • PROS
  • Non-US
  • Fast speeds
  • Very simple design
  • Easy to use
  • CONS
  • Fairly new
  • Slightly pricey
  • Some logging

Buffered is a new start up for Hungary, contrary to this it offers a great service. They have servers in 10 countries (and growing), professional OpenVPN encryption, shared IPS and superb speeds. They are also based in Hungary which doesn’t have strict data retention laws and is outside UK and US jurisdiction.

Though they aren’t the cheapest and are still fairly small, in essence they are everything you could need from a VPN for Spain.

CyberGhost

4,65/5

NordVPN Logo

  • PROS
  • No logs
  • Free service
  • Great client
  • BitCoin
  • Shared IPs
  • CONS
  • Not much

CyberGhost is based in Romania but has a large presence in Germany, of course this doesn’t mean it’s not a great VPN for Spain. With 24 servers across the globe, great speeds and good security they provide a well rounded service. Not to mention the fact that they provide a free service (with some limitations) and of course there is a free VPN for Spain server.

While their free service is limited their Premium packages are surely worth subscribing to.

NordVPN

4,65/5

NordVPN Logo

  • PROS
  • Fast
  • Allows P2P and accepts BitCoin
  • Panama based
  • No logs
  • CONS
  • Inconsistent connection speeds

Similarly to IronSocket, Panama based NordVPN doesn’t have to worry about EU or US laws and restrictions. This means they have zero logs, alongside top level security, accept BitCoin and of course support Tor. Not to mention the fact that they have plenty of server around the world.

Though their double-hop encryption does provide extra security it does detract a bit from the speeds you can achieve.

Freedom Issues In Spain

Freedom of the Press

While Press freedom is not only free but promoted in Spain, there have been a few issues with it. Firstly, due to the decline of the economy the available publications have changed format and a number of dominating press agencies are skewed in favour of the leading party. This has meant that other agencies do not get favourable treatments with a number of defamation and libel cases being brought up against them. Secondly, though minor, some violence and legal pressure has been used against reporters in order to control the content they publish.

On the upside, this has lead to an exponential increase in internet access and online news outlets. Of course there is still pressure against these publishers but a VPN for Spain will help protect against these advances.

Ley Sinde

The Ley Sinde (Sinde Law), is a law that was introduced in late 2011, and has been endorsed since early 2012. It is an increased copyright and patent law to help tackle internet privacy. Many people however, feel that this law is very excessive and there is still a strong movement against it, with some protest being lead by the infamouse ‘Anonymous‘.

Conclusion

Using a VPN for Spain is as simple as paying and then installing a service. We have shown you the 5 Best VPNs, which you can use not just to protect yourself but also to watch geo-location content, so go ahead and sign up to one of the services today. 1. Hi Andrea,

Thanks. I asked CyberGhost technical support a little while ago about shared IPs, and was told they were not used. Its good to know that they (now?) are.
