5 Best VPNs for LoveFilm

LoveFilm (or LOVEFiLM if you want to go with their visual styling) is British streaming on demand video service that is a subsidiary of Amazon.com. It also, like its main competitor Netflix,  runs a DVD and Blu-ray rent-by-post service alongside its online streaming, and now boasts over 70,000 titles (of which more than 5000 are available for streaming, many of them in HD).

The pricing structure is a little complex, but the basic streaming package,’ LoveFilm Instant’, lets you access all their streaming titles for £4.99 (approx. $7.50) per month, with a generous 1 month trial thrown in for free.  As DVD delivery is only available in the countries in which LoveFilm operates, and you wouldn’t need to be considering accessing it over VPN if you live there, the other prices are not relevant to this article.

LoveFilm can be accessed through Windows and Mac computers, most popular games consoles and a variety of Smart TV’s, Blu-ray players and other media devices, although access from mobile devices is limited to iPads and the Kindle Fire HD (i.e. no iPhone or other Android devices).

As is common with such services, LoveFilm is  only available in a limited number of countries – the UK, Germany and Scandinavia, so to access it from elsewhere you will need to ‘spoof’ your geo-location. While there a number of ways to do this, such as using DNS spoofing and proxies, VPN is the best all-round solution and hey, we’re a VPN review site! If you are interested in the difference between VPN and proxy servers you might want to check out our article on the subject here.

One thing to bear in mind when viewing Lovefilm via a VPN server is that it will slow your internet connection down  due to the extra distance the data has to travel, plus the time it takes to encrypt and decrypt the information. Although with a good VPN such as those recommended below this is not usually a big hit, it can be noticeable, especially during peak viewing hours. Lovefilm recommends at least 2Mb/s (real speed not advertised speed) for standard definition streaming and a hefty 12Mb/s for full HD.

Winner – ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN_Logo

Positives: Easy-to-use software, excellent speeds, good customer service

Negatives: Bit pricy, but worth it for the features

ExpressVPN have been around for a while, and have slowly and methodically built a great company. When we tested them their speeds were excellent, the sofware was really easy to use, and their 24/7 customer service also delivered on the promises.

Their pricing is not the cheapest, but you do get what you pay for. As I said above, the price is worth these positive points. The company boasts servers in 33 different countries, which means you can appear to be in any country you want.

2. PIA

Positives: no logs, great attitude to privacy, very fast, accepts Bitcoin, VPN client has some great features

Negatives: no free trial, only 1 UK server (although we have not actually encountered a problem because of this)

A US based company that, unlike many of its brethren US VPN providers, takes advantage of the lack of a mandatory data retention law in the States to keep no logs, provides a great VPN service that is dedicated to maintaining its customers’ anonymity while delivering blistering speeds. The VPN client is also great, featuring DNS leak protection and auto-disconnect from the internet in the event of a disconnection from the VPN server. The only potential issue is that Private Internet Access has only one server in the UK, although we have never had any problems connecting to it, or with finding it overloaded.

3. CyberGhost

Positives: no logs, fast, great VPN client, good free service (although not fast enough for LoveFilm), 30 day free trial

Negatives: Does not accept Bitcoin, VPN client is Windows only (although guides are provides for setting OpenVPN up on other devices)
CyberGuard offers a great free service, but although we achieved speeds double that of the advertised 1Mb/s cap, it would still be pushing it to use the free serviced for streaming LoveFilm. Fortunately the paid-for services of this no logs Romanian VPN provider are nice and nippy, and the smart looking (Windows only) VPN client is a joy to use. With 11 UK servers, achieving great LoveFilm download speeds should be easy, and our only real caveat with the CyberGuard service being that we are unsure how the EU wide Data Retention Directive affects VPN providers in Romania (although we don’t doubt that no logs are kept regardless of the legal situation).

4. TorGuard

Positives: no logs, 256-bit AES encryption, accepts Bitcoins, very fast, UK servers

Negatives: asks for too much information during registration, keeps that info for marketing reasons, some connection problems, no free trial

Despite giving us some exceptional speeds during our tests, and ticking all the important boxes such as keeping no logs and accepting Bitcoin payments, TorGuard drew flak from us thanks to its policy of asking too many personal details during registration, and keeping these details on file for promotional purposes. Add this to some odd errors when trying to connect, and this Panama based VPN provider failed to gain the favor it is perhaps due. Irritations aside, TorGuard provides a good service that does what it is supposed to, and is (as we mentioned) very fast.

5. Kepard

logo

Positives: great VPN client (especially for Android), logs only kept for 3 days, 15 day free trial, UK servers

Negatives: logs kept for 3 days, not very fast

Kepard is a small Moldovan VPN provider who impressed us with its easy to use multi-protocol VPN client, especially the Android version of it which is the only dedicated OpenVPN capable Android client we have yet come across. Unlike the other providers in this round-up, Kepard does keep logs, but only for 3 days which while not ideal, is probably not long enough for most negative purposes.    In addition to this, the speedtest.net results, while not awful, did not set us on fire. However, with UK servers and a 15 day free trial, we think Kepard is worth checking out, particularly for Android users who, although they won’t be able to watch LoveFilm on their devices, will love the Kepard client’s ease of use.

Conclusion

For simply watching LoveFilm almost any VPN service will do as long as it has servers in the country you want watch LoveFilm from (usually the UK).  Choosing a suitable VPN provider is therefore matter of finding a good all round service, which at least the first four of the above, but arguably Kepard also, provides in spades.
