5 Best DD-WRT VPN Service Providers

On some routers, it is possible to replace the stock firmware with an open-source firmware known as DD-WRT. You can then further enhance this router by running a DD-WRT VPN service on it. DD-WRT itself opens up your routers capabilities, controls, and functions; giving you the equivalent of a high-end business class router with a very low cost.

Installing a VPN client on your DD-WRT router has two large advantages. Firstly, any device connected to the router will automatically have it’s internet connection protected, so you won’t need to find a VPN plan that allows for an excessive amount of simultaneous connections. Secondly, since all devices are now connected to an OpenVPN server, it means that they will all be able to access geographically restricted content such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Hulu.

We will cover some more points relating to DD-WRT and VPNs later on in this post, but if you’re interested in DD-WRT, then we recommend our recently released super guide on the topic.

Without further ado, here are the five best DD-WRT VPN client services.

Best DD-WRT VPN Service

  • ProsPROS
  • Great technical team
  • Superb speed and security
  • Excellent design and usability
  • ConsCONS
  • Not a lot

BufferedVPN is one of the newest VPN providers on the market, but do not let this put you off. In true startup style, the company has worked out to provide an excellent service. They have servers across the globe to suit everyone, an easy to use interface, apps for all platforms, and a splendid customer support team.

Being based in Hungary means that Buffered is outside of US and UK jurisdictions, away from snooping eyes. To provide more security they have OpenVPN by default and, of course, use shared IPs. You are also able to connect up to 3 devices, and with a DD-WRT VPN router, you’ll have even more devices connected.

Buffered makes it incredibly easy to set up DD-WRT OpenVPN connections and was one of the fastest setups we performed. Find out for yourself by signing up.

ExpressVPN

4.6/5

ExpressVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • Easy to follow DD-WRT VPN guide
  • Dedicated customer service
  • Huge range of servers, with great speeds
  • ConsCONS
  • Bit pricey but worth it for the features

While ExpressVPN provides a superb service, and we often rank them first, due to some troubleshooting issues we felt that they aren’t the best dd-wrt VPN provider. While their setup guides are easy to follow and straight-forward, our DD-WRT router didn’t wish to connect. While they spent a few hours with us in live chat, they weren’t able to solve it. The problem was that we were using an unstable build. However, due to their effort and dedication we won’t fault them too much, as plenty of other VPNs would have got stuck as well.

On the plus side, they have servers in over 80 countries, boast excellent speeds and on the whole have built a magnificent product and service.

AirVPN

4.5/5

AirVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • No logs
  • Based in Italy
  • Outstanding attitude to privacy
  • ConsCONS
  • No preconfigured DD-WRT routers
  • Very technical

When it comes to VPNs and technicality, AirVPN always wins the race. A group of hacktivists founded the Italian company, and so their service is extremely advanced. Therefore, it’s no surprise that they support DD-WRT VPN setup and many other unique features such as port forwarding, Tor over VPN and much more.

Unfortunately, this also means that navigating the AirVPN website and software can be tough. While the setup on DD-WRT isn’t complicated, setup for devices can be offputting, and this is important to bear in mind. On the whole though a very worthwhile provider, just watch out for the technical difficulties.

SaferVPN

4.1/5

SaferVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • No usage logs
  • P2P: yes (NL server only)
  • Two simultaneous connections (Premium plan)
  • Great support
  • Servers in 24 countries
  • ConsCONS
  • Connection Logging
  • No ‘Killswitch’
  • Could Have More P2P Servers

SaferVPN runs on professional well-designed software that is easy to use. It has servers in a good range of countries, and it has fantastic connection speeds. It is also set up to work perfectly with DD-WRT. Its attitude to customer data and commitment to net neutrality is commendable. The free trial and easy access to basic level customer support make it very accessible to new users.

SaferVPN also has an excellent selection of servers located in 24 locations around the world. As pointed out already, the company keeps no usage logs (though some connection logs are kept.) The desktop app for Mac and Windows is great, and aswell as working seemlessly with DD-WRT SaferVPN can be downloaded for all popular platforms (Windows and Mac OSX plus top notch iOS and Android apps). That means that you will also be able to use your VPN service on your iPhone if you have one, or on an Android smartphone. Great news!.

All things considered it is pretty hard to deny that Safer VPN is a fantastic choice for people that want to go with DD-WRT. So why not give them a go and see if it’s the VPN for you.

VPNArea

3.8/5

VPNArea

  • ProsPROS
  • Based in Bulgaria
  • Very adaptive
  • Up to 5 simultaneous connections!
  • ConsCONS
  • Cons come here

Similarly to Buffered, VPNArea hails out of Eastern Europe. This means that they aren’t at risk to any DRD laws, and since they keep no logs they won’t be able to hand over anything even if they responded to subpoenas – which they don’t.

With one of the lowest long-term prices on the market and the amount of features included in their package, VPNArea is a value packed service that you have to see to believe.

DD-WRT VPN Considerations

When it comes to DD-WRT, it’s not the easiest topic on the planet, especially if you have petite technical experience. However, we hope that these few paragraphs will help you get a VPN client setup on your router, and if you’d like to learn more, then we’d recommend viewing our Ultimate DD-WRT Guide.

Getting a DD-WRT Router

By far the quickest and easiest way of getting a DD-WRT router is by getting one that is already pre-flashed. This saves you the trouble of having to do it yourself, which comes with the risk of “bricking” it, and you won’t have to search for stable builds. Of course, this does come with a slightly higher price. Pre-flashed DD-WRT routers can be acquired in the following way:

  • Visiting FlashRouters: FlashRouters provides a custom DD-WRT flashing and customizing service so once your router you can just plug and go.
  • Direct from the manufacturer: Many router manufacturers have realized the popularity of DD-WRT routers, and they now provide these themselves, and you can buy them on Amazon.
  • Direct from the VPN provider: Many VPN providers, including some on this list, and others such as StrongVPN can provide you with a combined router and DD-WRT VPN package.

OpenVPN – DD-WRT VPN Setup Guide

Setting up OpenVPN for DD-WRT can vary by provider. Here are the setup settings that are provided by Buffered, the best VPN service provider for DD-WRT.

Before starting, you will need to make sure that your version of DD-WRT supports OpenVPN. Most builds do by default, so this shouldn’t cause a large concern.

  1. Navigate to the Buffered Config page and download the .ovpn file for the server which you’ll wish to use
  2. Open the file using a text editor. We recommend using Notepad ++.
  3. Navigate to the DD-WRT GUI at 192.168.1.1, and log in
  4. Navigate to “Setup -> Basic Setup” and under Network Address Server Settings (DHCP) enter either of the following:
    1. For Google DNS: Static DNS 1 – 8.8.8.8, Static DNS 2 – 8.8.4.4
    2. For OpenDNS: Static DNS 1 – 208.67.222.222, Static DNS 2 – 208.67.220.220
    3. For OpenNic: Visit the website to find the best one for you
  5. Navigate to “Services -> VPN” and Enable the OpenVPN Client
    DD-WRT VPN
  6. Create the following settings:
      1. Server Address/Port: In the .ovpn file the line that starts with remote will give you the IP of the server and also the port (443)
      2. Tunnel Device/Protocol: TUN/UDP
      3. Encryption Cipher/Hash: Blowfish CBC / SHA1
      4. nsCertTypeVerification: Disabled
      5. Advanced Options: Enabled
      6. TLS Cipher: None
      7. LZO compression: Yes
      8. NAT: Enable
      9. Tunnel MTU Setting: 1500
      10. Tunnel UDP MSS-Fix: Enabled
      11. Into the Additional Config box paste the following client remote-cert-tls server ping 15 ping-restart 60 resolv-retry infinite nobind explicit-exit-notify 3 comp-lzo yes verb 2 route-gateway dhcp redirect-gateway def1
  7. For the Keys, you’ll need to do the following using the .ovpn file
    1. Copy the text between <ca> and </ca> to CA Cert
    2. Copy the text between <cert> and </cert> to Public Client Cert
    3. Copy the text between <key> and </key> to Private Client Key
  8. Click Apply Settings
  9. Going to “Status -> OpenVPN” will display your connection status and should say Connected: Success
  10. You can also navigate to InfoByIP to check your connection

We hope you found this dd-wrt VPN router guide useful. If your dd-wrt VPN is not working, or you have questions, please leave a comment and we’ll try to help as much as possible.
