5 Best Skype VPN Providers

Skype has become so popular over the years, that when people mention VoIP, Skype tends to be the first thought in people’s minds. Unfortunately, it has been banned in a number of countries, and you’ll need to use these Skype VPN services to overcome the blockades.

Skype’s popularity is not difficult to understand as it allows anyone with an internet connection to talk, text message and video conference with anyone else with an internet connection. Perhaps a little flaky when it first started thanks to the fact that many users still connected to the internet via a dial-up connection. However, in today’s high-speed ultra-connected world  Skype removes the need to ever pay high-cost telephone charges again.

Unsurprisingly, telecoms operators whose profits were wholly reliant on telephone call charges, particularly high-cost international call charges, were horrified. In addition to this many ISPs rushed to block Skype, citing high bandwidth usage as a reason, although Skype has always maintained that it uses a very limited amount of bandwidth. The real reason for the ban became more obvious when these ISPs then introduced their own proprietary VoIP (Voce over Internet Protocol – the generic term for the service Skype provides) services for a charge (in the US for example ClearWire and Madison River have been guilty of this).

While in most countries market forces and the tides of progress have forced ISPs to allow Skype, this is not true everywhere (see the list at the end of this article). In addition to this, oppressive governments everywhere who do not like the idea their citizens having free access to talk to people anywhere in the world, have been quick to block Skype.

Buffered

4.8/5

Buffered Skype VPN

  • ProsPROS
  • Fast speeds
  • Excellent design
  • Simple usability
  • Based outside of the US
  • ConsCONS
  • Slightly more expensive
  • Not much else

Buffered is a relatively new VPN company but one who provide excellent usability and speeds. They have servers in nearly 20 different countries, but these include all the major important ones like US, UK, Netherlands. We really like their website and software, which is one of the reasons we recommend them so highly. Not to mention the fact that when we tested them, their speeds were impeccable so you won’t lose any quality while making your Skype calls.

One of their big advantages is that they are based in Hungary, which does not have strict data retention rules and is outside the jurisdiction of major countries like the US and the UK. To follow up this great news, they have a reasonable low price, and we think that will suit you for the unblocking of any service that you might want to access!

NordVPN

4.6/5

NordVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • Superb value
  • Awesome VPN apps
  • Amazing encryptions
  • No logs
  • P2P allowed
  • ConsCONS
  • Can be slow sometimes

NordVPN’s tough stance on privacy and security is perfect. Great security makes it a good pick for anyone looking to secure their Skype conversations. The Panama-based provider does its best to make its users’ surfing as anonymous as possible with 256-bit AES encryption, the option to pay with Bitcoin, and a strict no logs policy (courtesy of Panama’s lack of mandatory data retention laws).

While its slightly slower speeds are a bit of a downer, NordVPN makes up for it with other goodies like P2P support and dedicated streaming servers. Not to mention its large server network, which boasts global coverage with over 550 servers in 47 countries, including lesser-seen locales such as South America and South East Asia. In addition, they have applications available for all major operating systems.

3rd place

VyprVPN

4.4/5

VyprVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • High-level OpenVPN encryption
  • Apps for all operating systems
  • No usage logs
  • Very fast
  • ConsCONS
  • HQ in the US, but data stored in Switzerland
  • Some connection logs

Run by global internet consortium Golden Frog, VyprVPN is a great choice for users of Skype. Since it runs its own data centers, not something any other VPN companies can boast about, it has excellent speeds. It keeps no usage logs (although it does keep some connection logs), and allows P2P downloading. Encryption is rock-solid at 160-bit to 256-bit OpenVPN, and the fact that you can connect up to 2 devices at once (or 3 for the premier package) is excellent. Note that these comments only refer to the slightly pricey (our only real criticism) Premium Plan, and that the PPTP only basic version should be avoided at all cost.

ExpressVPN

4.3/5

ExpressVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • Servers across the globe
  • Easy to use VPN client
  • Money-back guarantee offered
  • ConsCONS
  • Keeps some logs

ExpressVPN is another company that has servers in an impressively large number of countries. Perhaps the most useful for those needing to unblock Skype are the ones in Panama, Japan, Singapore, and Egypt.

When reviewing ExpressVPN we found they provided a solid Skype VPN service and found that there are very little let downs. They are based outside of the US, so your data is safe and provide leak protection by default so your data will never fall into unknown hands. They are on the pricier side, but as the saying goes: “you get what you pay for”.

SaferVPN

4/5

SaferVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • Focus on an open web for citizens
  • Change IP in 30 seconds
  • Reliable and speedy
  • ConsCONS
  • Keeps some connection logs

Based in Israel, SaferVPN wholly understands the issues with the blocking of Skype and other internet services that are prevalent in that region of the world. Thankfully, this had lead to them developing a very reliable service, that not only has great speed but also excellent protection.

With SaferVPN, you can be protected and having video conversations with your friends, family, and loved ones in a matter of minutes.

Considerations for Skype VPN Services

Where is Skype blocked?

These are the countries (in alphabetical order), where Skype is blocked for one reason or another:

  • Anguilla – blocked by Cable & Wireless, Caribbean. This UK based company started by blocking VoIP serves in the Caribbean, and then began pushing their own services onto customers
  • Antigua- see Anguilla
  • Bahrain
  • British Virgin Islands – see Anguilla
  • Belize – there is only one ISP/telecoms company (Belize Telecommunications Limited), which not only blocks Skype but also Google Talk, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo! IM because they offer their own VoIP and chat service
  • Brazil – blocked by Brasil Telecom in order to stop revenue loss
  • China – Skype users in mainland China use a modified version that follows Chinese regulations and is heavily monitored by the authorities, called TOM-Skype
  • Cayman Islands – see Anguilla
  • Cuba – due to government censorship
  • Dominica – see Anguilla
  • Egypt – many content including Skype is blocked in Egypt
  • Iran – Heavily filters many websites. Reports vary, but reader Siavash assures us that Skype is, in fact, generally available.
  • Grenada – see Anguilla
  • Guyana
  • Jamaica – see Anguilla
  • Jordan
  • Kuwait – blocked by Qualitynet
  • Libya
  • Malaysia
  • Montserrat – see Anguilla
  • Morocco
  • Myanmar/ Burma
  • North Korea
  • Oman – blocked by Omantel
  • Pakistan – blocked by most ISPs  (PTA, PCCW, Cybernet, PIE and Flag Telecom)
  • Paraguay
  • Qatar – blocked by Qtel
  • Saint Lucia – see Anguilla
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines – see Anguilla
  • Singapore – blocked by Singtel
  • South Korea
  • St Kitts and Nevis – see Anguilla
  • Syria
  • Thailand
  • Tunisia
  • Tukey
  • Turks and Caicos – see Anguilla
  • UAE (including Dubai) – blocked by Etisalat so you will need a VPN for Skype in UAE, as admitted by Skype themselves
  • Vietnam
  • Yemen

How to Unblock Skype

Whether it’s your ISP or your government blocking your access to Skype, the below two solutions exist for overcoming these.

Skyper Proxy Server

It is easy to configure Skype to use a proxy server. You can do this by clicking on Tools, then Advanced and finally Connection. Skype Proxy Server Options

You can choose between Automatic Proxy Detection, HTTP and a SOCKS proxy. You can read about the differences between each of these on at our Proxy vs VPN comparison post.

There are many free proxies for Skype (a good list updated in real time is available from HideMyAss), but these tend to be highly unreliable.  VPN providers such as VPN.ac, CyberGhost, and SaferVPN also offer low cost and much more reliable private proxy services.

Skype VPN

Although it costs more, there is simply no better way to circumvent blocks on Skype use than using VPN. As an encrypted Skype tunnel is created between the computer running Skype and the VPN server. No intervening government or ISP can ‘see’ any of the data being transmitted ,and is therefore unable to tell that Skype is being used (for more information please see our article on What is a Virtual Private Network?). There are also no Skype VPN settings to deal with, you just run the VPN you have chosen and you’re done.

In addition to allowing unrestricted use of Skype, using a VPN service secures all your Internet traffic, enabling you to bypass any other restrictions placed on your internet use. With all of the providers on this list, the highest security comes by default, and you’ll have OpenVPN unblocking Skype in minutes.

Using Skype in China

Skype users in mainland China are directed towards using TOM-Skype, a modified version of Skype that conforms to Chinese regulations and is heavily monitored by the Chinese government. However, by using a VPN, it is an easy matter to download the international version of Skype from the regular website and, to connect over a secure VPN connection, amd gain unrestricted and unmonitored Skype access.

Best VPNs for Skype Conclusion

Fundamentally speaking, using any VPN service will unblock Skype. While previously most VPN providers had limited server locations, today many have servers in up to 100 countries! This means that you’ll be able to connect to a VPN server which is physically close to you, and you won’t have to compromise on speed.

Since you’re going to be using a Skype VPN or proxy to overcome government and ISP censorship, we have relaxed our obsession with no logs VPNs. Instead we have focused more on their server locations, quality of service and the VPN speeds that they provide.

    1. Hi Siavash,

This list is rather old, but after doing some research it seems that accessing Skype in Iran can still be problematic. The most useful thing I have read is that Skype works on some ISPs, but not all of them. Does this match your experience?

      1. In term of access,I don’t know any ISP that blocked Skype for customers but in other hand upload speed in Iran is very restricted ( 512kb to 1024kb :/). This made Skype calls ( especially video calls ) very problematic.

        1. Hi Siavash,

Thanks for the input. It is much appreciated. I had updated the article to include your on-the-ground experience regarding this issue.
