27 May 2013 |

If you are in Hong Kong, you might want to access websites from IPs that appear in other countries. For example, what if in Hong kong you want to watch Netflix or BBC iPlayer, or Hulu? Alternativly, just encrypt your traffic while you are browsing. VPNs offer the solution to this, and there are hundreds of companies offering this service.

So, we’ve decided to write an article about the top VPNs that work in Hong Kong, to make sure you can access all these services. While there are over 100 VPN services out there, it’s a good idea to compare them in details, since the level of service does vary a lot. Editor’s Choice

Winner – VyprVPN

Positives: fast, 160-bit and 256-bit OpenVPN encryption (Pro only), Android app, iOS app, 7 day money back guarantee, up to 3 simultaneous connections, no usage logs

Negatives: bit pricey

VyprVPN is run by international consortium Golden Frog, and are Switzerland based which means they are outside the scope of UK and US legislation. VyprVPN has great 160-bit to 265-bit OpenVPN encryption, allows 2 devices to connect simultaneously (or 3 for the premier package), offers a 7 days money back guarantee, and  has apps for both Android and iOS. What more could you want!

Well, how about the fact that they run their own data centers and networks, which means they can achieve speed and latency that not many other VPNs can. This makes them ideal for streaming video as well.

The only negative aspect is that they aren’t the cheapest service, but the price is still reasonable and well worth it for the quality you will get!

2. StrongVPN

StrongVPN

Positives: No speed restrictions, over 300 servers, excellent tutorials

Negatives: No privacy policy

StrongVPN claim to have been providing internet services since 1995, we’re not sure what but they are an older and more established company than many other VPN services. They are based in San Francisco, which means that no logging laws are applicable to them since they are in the US, although some tend to be sceptical about this.

They have standalone software that you just install and it automatically sets everything up for you.

Their prices start at $7 per month, which is a medium price, and it comes with a 7 day moneyback guarantee.

3. ibVPN

StrongVPN

Positives: Very Cheap, Dedicated torrent service, No logs

Negatives: Live support sometimes offline, design

ibVPN are the value for money VPN. While their website looks terrible and they don’t really have software like the previous two services, we were really impressed with their speeds. So you will have to go into your network settings and change everything. But they do have some clear guides on how to do this, so if price is the selling point for you, you should probably choose them.

They also don’t have 24/7 customer service, which is expected really at this price.

Their prices start from $3 per month which is very very low, and they have a dedicated torrent service which not that many VPN services have.

4. Private Internet Access

Positives: No logs, shared IPs, accept Bitcoin, encourages anonymous email, VPN kill switch, DNS leak protection, US based so no data retention laws

Negatives: No free trial or money back guarantee period

PIA were started by the same people who founded MTGox, the Bitcoin exchange, so that gives you an interesting background about them. They are absolutely committed to privacy, despite being in the USA. They accept signups via anonymous email, they accept bitcoin for payment, and have DNS leak protection and an internet kill switch built into the software.

Prices are only slightly higher than ibVPN, if paid monthly they are $6.95 per month. There is no moneyback guarantee though.

5. HideMyAss

HideMyAss Logo

Positives: Great software, fast servers, plenty of locations

Negatives: Not the best price, but still a good price

HideMyAss is the brand you’ve probably heard about, they’ve done a good job advertising themselves and getting people to sign up. They do have around 47,000 IP addresses and we haven’t found any other VPN with that many, so they definitely win in terms of number of IPs.

Their basic service is $11.52 per month if you pay monthly, but it can work out to $6.51 per month if you pay upfront which is a reasonably low price. Their software is well worth it, probably the best in the industry.

The only negative is that they are in the UK, which means they probably have to log everything you do.

They also have a 30 day moneyback guarantee, so there is no real risk for you, you can get your money back at any time.
