5 Best VPNs for Netflix – 2014 Update

23 Feb 2014 |

Netflix is renowned as an on-demand internet media streaming provider boasting more than 10 million subscribers and over 6000 titles. It began operation as a flat-fee DVD rental service and this remains part of their business. For just $7.99 per month you get unlimited, unrestricted access to its video library. You can stream in regular or HD versions without interruption from advertisers as you might with, for example, Hulu Plus. Also offered is a one month free trial.

The real hang-up is that Netflix is only available in some countries. These include North and South America, the Caribbean, UK, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. It is very frustrating for those living outside these areas. And even if you do live in the areas covered by Netflix there can be snags. If there are licensing restrictions the latest episodes of the latest episodes of your favorite TV series may not be able to be seen. The best country to view Netflix from is the USA.

It has a larger catalogue than anywhere else and features the latest seasons of popular US TV shows such as ’Breaking Bad’ and ’Mad Men’.

The solution of course is to use a VPN service to make your IP address appear to originate from whichever country in which the VPN server is located. One of the great features of most VPNs is that they maintain servers in many different countries. It’s easy then to simply change your apparent location to suit whichever programs you choose to watch.

Winner – ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN_Logo

Positives: No logs, great speeds, 30 day money back guarantee, great Android support

Negatives: Medium Price, US company

ExpressVPN usually scores well in our Top 5 lists and this isn’t without reason. They provide an absolutely fantastic service with great software for all major operating systems, fantastic customer support and great guides to everything you could ever need. They also have servers in 78 countries, a reliable 256 bit OpenVPN encryption and allow 2 simultaneous connections.

They have servers in all countries where you could use Netflix, and we personally use them for streaming video and the speed is great!

They are not the cheapest service but this means they do invest in their infrastructure and can deliver a great service.

2. Buffered

Buffered

Positives: Built for streaming, fast speeds, excellent design and usability

Negatives: Higher priced, but good value

Buffered are a relatively new VPN company specialised at providing a VPN service for streaming video. They are non-US based, which is great, have servers in 15 different countries, and have really nice software and a website.

When we tested them their speeds were excellent and HD streaming on Netflix was not a problem (although this will depend on your local connection as well). They also work for BBC iPlayer, Apple TV, anywhere where you would want to stream video. They work on all devices.

We personally use them at it works great.

We highly recommend them for Netflix as this is the business they chose to specialise in. Click the button below to sign up for them now!

3. IPVanish

IPVanish Logo

Positives: Excellent speeds, Cheap, Great Security

Negatives: Not Much

IPVanish has over 15 years of experience in the networking industry and run some of the best Tier 1 level networks – amazing speeds in simple terms. They have servers in a whopping 59 countries and with their recent security updates they keep absolutely no logs, have shared IPs and even accept Bitcoin! This means that they have the fastest network for streaming video, and that means easy Netflix streaming!

Their prices are very cheap, for this level of service they are by far the cheapest provider so they are highly recommended if you choose on price.

They keep no logs whatsoever. The software is perhaps a bit simpler than some other services, but all the essential features.

IPVanish are definitely deserve this crown, they have an amazing product at an amazing price! Click the button below to sign up now!

4. VyprVPN

VyprVPN

Positives: Established company, fast speeds, excellent design and usability

Negatives: Not much, a bit of upselling

VyprVPN are a VPN that are part of the “Golden Frog” network of services. They are also a part of Data Foundry, a massive IT and networking business with huge data centres in Texas. This means that VyprVPN has network infrastructure like no other VPN, meaning they have awesome speeds and if anything goes wrong, instant access to correct it. Not only that, Looking at their VPN page makes us go “ooooh” inside, since their design is really really nice. This is followed up by great tutorials and great software.

Prices start at $6.99 which is mid level, which is great as the software is more high level, so you are getting good value for money. They also offer a free 3 day trial, plenty of time to test them. This is not a moneyback guarantee like most other VPNs, where you are charged the cash and then you get it back, but it’s actually free.

They also have a unique privacy protocol that works even better at hiding VPN traffic, called Chameleon, this is also a unique offering that no other VPN does.

4. CyberGhost

Positives: No logs, speedy, great free service (though not suitable for Netflix), attractive VPN client, one month free trial for premium package with no upfront payment

Negatives: VPN client is Windows only (although OpenVPN set up guides are provided for other platforms), does not accept Bitcoins

CyberGhost is a Romanian company but with a large presence in Germany. While subject to the EU’s DRD, the laws are not uniformly applied as of now. CG impresses with a great free service. But the 1Mb/s (2Mb/s in our test) speed cap makes it unsuitable for Netflix streaming. The premium service is an affordable $6.99 per month. This gets you a fast, no logs VPN service that respects its users privacy. Having 5 US servers, CyberGhost is in a good position to offer US flavored Netflix.

5. TorGuard

Positives: No logs, accepts bitcoins, amazingly fast, US servers, has P2P, 30 day money back guarantee

Negatives: asks for too much registration information and keeps that info for marketing purposes, some connection problems

TG has recently expanded the scope of its services. They have added many new servers and an Android app. Also now featured are stealth servers for accessing the internet from behind firewalls. In addition it offers SSH tunneling and a free copy of Viscosity software. Also, now you will find a router service and more.

TorGuard did manage to annoy us for a few reasons. For instance, there are some sketchy connection issues. Then, too, is the aforementioned registration questions and the statement that it may use this information for self-promotion purposes. Nonetheless, the core service of this Panama based VPN provider is solid. They keep no logs and accept anonymous payment through Bitcoin. They feature US based servers and produce extremely good speed test results. Thus, overall, we are happy to recommend them.

VyprVPN isn’t working for me anymore. It used to work on my laptop, phone and tablet. Now none of them work on Netflix.

If expressvpn is the editors choice, then the editors should get back to work. Although expressvpn has great customer service, it has pitiful streaming speeds from south Pacific to Europe and the Americas. Downloading speeds are also very slow. A critical reason for VPN is access to content in other countries. Unfortunately, express fails to deliver fast enough speeds to access such content. After one year of service, I am looking for a replacement. I will have to find other editors’ research, however.

      Hi Ejay

We’re sorry to hear that. We have tested Express multiple times and we’ve always got great speeds no matter where we were connected. However, speeds can depend on a number of factors and what’s fast for one person might not be for someone else. This is why we always recommend 5 different providers to try as there should be something for everyone.

all of them are crap. I’ve tried every single of them including the legendary hidemyass
from the list above only the first one that I didn’t try in the past. when you start using express vpn is good but by the time goes by the more you use it the more they cap the speed like my ISP. the others doesn’t even a time to review them crap also hidemyass is the same as express vpn.

The only VPN proudly that I can talk about is private internet access. Man this guys deserve an award the best vpn service of all time. I’ve used them almost for a year, I can say that the speed is always the same fast like hell. Keep up the goood work
