Although it is not perfect (it is for example based in the US), we are big fans of the privacy-centric search engine DuckDuckGo.

It now seems that over the weekend DuckDuckGo joined Google (and BestVPN) in being censored by the Great Fire Wall of China (GFW), something that DuckDuckGo’s founder and CEO Gabriel Weinberg has confirmed.

DuckDuckGo blocked in China

No explanation has so far been given, but China does allow the Bing and Yahoo search engines as these operate under Chinese law and heavily censor their results.

Google on the other hand, is banned in China for refusing to do this, so it seems reasonable to assume that DuckDuckGo, which also does not censor its search results, was banned on similar grounds.
