GOOSE VPN Homepage
PROS:
  • Unblock iPlayer
  • Strong encryption
  • Good customer care
  • 30-day free trial
  • Servers in 22 countries
CONS:
  • Simple with few features

GooseVPN is another service that is xcellent for unblocking iPlayer. With servers in 22 countries, including the UK, it is perfect for unblocking a lot of different TV streams. Encryption is strong, and users get the option of OpenVPN or IKEv2. The privacy policy is also robust, and speeds are ideal for streaming. This VPN is also extremely popular with consumers.

The VPN is helpful and answers questions quickly. The software is easy to use and available for most platforms. Although it isn't as fully featured as some of the others on this list, GooseVPN is perfect for unblocking iPlayer and US Netflix.

9.4/10.0

PureVPN Homepage
PROS:
  • Servers in over 90 countries
  • Super fast for streaming
  • No usage logs
  • Android Smart TV app
  • 24/7 customer care is VERY helpful
CONS:
  • Some connection logs

This cheap VPN has proven for some time now that it is a spectacular VPN for streaming. Anybody that doubts its ability to unblock something - hasn't got a clue. PureVPN unblocks everything that it is possible to unblock including iPlayer. In fact, if there is something you want to unblock that you can't access all you need to do is go to their website's 24/7 live chat and tell them. Do this, and they will provide you with a temporary dedicated IP address to get the job done at no extra cost!

When it comes to privacy, this VPN is pretty good - it keeps no usage logs and only minimal connection logs. However, it can be said that this VPN is amazing for streaming but only adequate for privacy. It has been known to have the odd DNS leak. Insanely cheap and perfect for those who only care about unblocking streaming content. This VPN is fast!

StrongVPN Homepage
PROS:
  • 60 pays couverts
  • Essai gratuit de trois jours
  • Fonctionnalité de double cryptage
CONS:

ipvanish is blocked by BBC iplayer, that’s official, straight from their support team. If you subscribe to them for watching iPlayer content you’ll be disappointed.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi benoit,

We are currently working on a system to keep up to date on iPlayer (and Netflix) developments. Until it is in place, we encourage readers to take advantage of any free trials and/or money back guarantees on offer before to check that a VPN service works.

  2. Alistair dit :

IP vanish doesn’t connect to BBC and when I contacted them a few days ago they said they were still working on a resolution however do not have a resolution date.

  3. fiona dit :

I have recently moved to the south of Ireland, and BBC iPlayer is not available here. I’m using AVG vpn and can’t even get on the BBC UK website, it keeps bumping me off onto .com!

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi fiona,

These VNPs should help you, but do take advantage of any free trials and/or money back guarantees to check. It is a continually changing cat-and-mouse game, but we are working on a system to keep up-to-date with the latest developments.

  4. Bob Lester dit :

    Hello,
    testmy.net won’t work with NordVPN.
Also NordVPN work for only one day onIplayer

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Bob,

Can you please explain what you mean when you say “testmy.net won’t work with NordVPN”? It certainly did when I last checked. We are currently working on a system to keep up-to-date with which VPN work with services such as iPlayer.

  5. Alistair dit :

Yes – I’m with IPvanish but about to leave as none of their servers work with BBC iPlayer – if they want to outfox bbc they need constantly changing up addesses.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Alistair,

There other other tricks a VPN can use, such as fancy DNS routing, but yes – all remedies require a VPN to be pro-active and willing to respond quickly when it becomes blocked. I would be very surprised in IPVanish don’t revolve the issue soon.

  6. Tom dit :

IPVanish isn’t working any longer with BBC and I just started a two year deal with them one month ago and they will not issue a refund. Learn from my experience and be aware of the risks of signing on long term with a VPN that might not be able to deliver BBC.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Tom,

It is a cat-and-mouse game. I know IPVanish works hard to ensure its service works with iPlayer, so the problem will probably get fixed soon. Have you contacted its support to find out if it has any unbanned servers or suchlike?

  7. Len Parmer dit :

Hi – thanks so much for the great article! I’ve learned a lot from it

I’m actually only interested in listening to the iPlayer Radio app while abroad – while I can get most stations fine I can’t always get 5LiveExtra. Would I still need a paid-for VPN for this? I’m loathe to spend money just in case it doesn’t work 🙂

    Thanks so much!

    Len

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Len,

Yes, a VPN should allow you to listen to 5LiveExtra. Why not just take advantage of a free trial or money back guarantee to check? :).

  8. Glenn dit :

VYPR and IPvanish stopped working for me in last week. So from other comments stating that Buffered and Express not working this article is rather out of date!

Anyone using Nord? or any other VPN that is working??

    Sad 🙂

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Glenn,

The situation changes rapidly, so keeping this page 100% up-to-date is hard. FWIW, Buffered tells us that:

“At buffered we have a fairly good solution which we know works. Users experiencing problems should tell customer service, but BBC iPlayer is working now, and we should get new ips every day. So unless the service goes down that provides new IPs for us, we should be ok.”

We have reached out to the other providers for a comment.

  9. emma dit :

Why doesnt someone at the bbc develop a VPN that allows people who live abroad to watch bbc and just charge for it? That way, everyone wins! With more people moving around between countries it makes sense to do something like this.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi emma,

I think the problem is that the BBC makes a great deal on money selling its content to overseas TV networks, and these networks require exclusivity for the region they cover…

  10. Clara Macewan dit :

I have been with Buffered for several months but have been unable to access BBC IPLAYER for the last month, despite endless attempts following their recommendations and an enormous amount of wasted time. I am about to cancel my subscription. Despite the fact that I have had almost no access for the last month, they are refusing to reimburse it.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Clara,

I contacted Buffered about this and was told:

“It’s been working since Friday again. And occasionally before that. We’ve constantly told users about issues and communicated about it.”

    2. Clara Macewan dit :

I can assure you that it is not working.
I tried again today and several times yesterday before deciding to cancel (which I have not yet done). Despite my IP address showing as the UK, I am getting the message from the BBC that the content is not available in my location.
I have signed up for the 3 day free trial with IVPN and that is working fine.

    3. David McConnell dit :

I have subscription to VYPR VPN to access BBC iPLayer from Australia. It worked for a few weeks and than I was blocked. VYPR VPN offered me generic assistance – but that did not help and I still cannot download or stream BBC iPlayer programmes.

Be careful if you take out a VPN subscription in order to watch BBC iPlayer programmes. It’s a waste of money. BBC still blocks you and you will not be able to watch BBC programmes.

      1. Douglas Crawford dit :

        David,

It’s a cat=and-mouse game. VprVPN may find a way around the problem, or it may not. It is safest to buy VP{N subscriptions one month at a time if you want to watch iPlayer or Netflix, but it does mean loosing out on some great bullk-time subscription discounts.

  11. Dan Harper dit :

I’ve just downloaded Express VPN and it does not work with The BBC, so that’s a waste of $14. I can add it to the list of other VPNs that don’t work with The BBC iPlayer including Astrill and Pure VPN. why doesn’t The BBC find a way to monetise it’s content foe expats ? I’d far rather pay them than a VPN provider

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Dan,

Have you contacted its 24/7 support about this? I know with US Netflix ExpressVPN always has servers that work, but they don’t like to shout about it. Support will tell you which servers to use, though, and the same is probably true of iPlayer.

  12. P S dit :

I’ve been using TunnelBear for quite some time, most of the time with no problem whatsoever. Alas, all things good come to the end, and since late September TunnelBear is experiencing problems with iPlayer, suggested fixes, one after another did not work, and ultimately TunnelBear customer service turned out to be able to do little more than to cancel my account and organise for refund, though without my request, consent and authorisation. Better to leave them now than experience more frustration.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi PS,

I was about say, at least it gave you a refund, but not so good it you didn’t ask for one. Many VPNs still work with iPlayer, but it is a cat and mouse game.

    2. Alex dit :

I have been using VPN services for almost 4 years specifically to watch Uk TV programs. To begin with it was straight forward making the connection and watching the BBC either live or on IPlayer. This year things have changes significantly as the BBC is shutting down VPN servers at a faster pace than ever before. To begin with I just changed from one VPN service provider to another and managed several months on each without too much trouble. The VPN services I have had and the service I currently use are on the top recommended list. however the situation has changed in recent weeks and I am finding it near impossible to make a connection without the BBC recognising my true location and stopping any attempt to view programs. I would strongly advise any potential customer of a vpn service provider to take a ONE month subscription and check it out.

      1. Douglas Crawford dit :

        Hi Alex,

I agree. Take out a one month subscription at a time and/or take advantage of any free deals and money back guarantees available. If you wish to access streaming services that bock VPN users (such as iPlayer), I would recommend not taking out annual subscriptions, as the situation can change fast.

  13. Tom dit :

ExpressVPN now doesn’t work. I have cleared cookies, changed locations, used incognito mode in Chrome.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi tom,

I suggest you contact ExressVPN to verify which servers are currently working for BBC iPLayer.

  14. Lorenzo007 dit :

Concerning Douglas Crawford’s comment above that “you need to clear cookies because BBC stores a cookie about you using a VPN once and then doesn’t let you in again.”

Please can you elaborate on this. Are you saying that Buffered (or any other VPN users) should be regularly “clearing” cookies left by the BBC, and if so how? I use Safari on a Mac, so do I choose Preferences>Privacy>Manage Website Data>Select BBC website>click Remove all. If so, will that action reduce tracking, or log me out of websites or change the BBC’s website behavior in any way? I’m not a technician but this is what I read on Apple’s website about Safari for macOS Sierra and their page on Manage Cookies & Website Data.

    1. Ray Walsh dit :

This info came to me third party from a VPN’s tech team who told me that cookies left by the BBC had been causing the VPN to stop working. They told me that deleting the cookies fixed the issue. Like you say, it is likely that deleting the cookies left on your browser by the BBC will delete details about who you are, which means you might have to log in again. However, if iPlayer stops working with your VPN it seems like a good idea to try it? If the iPlayer IS working with your VPN, then I would advise against clearing the cookies as that way it will all keep running smoothly and BBC will remember who you are. As far as I can tell you only need to delete the cookies if your VPN isn’t unblocking BBC iPlayer (and you know that it should).

  15. Southern gal dit :

As of the end of the summer 2017, BBC iPlayer (video) now REQUIRES that you REGISTER and logon to use the player, and it now blocks any one using a vpn.

Doesnt matter if you use uk postcode. apparently it is now checking your email against the tv license list and thus you are blocked.

    its a sad day

BBC is missing out on a huge income stream for those who would pay for their programming.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Southern gal,

The BBC is requiring that you register for iPlayer, but it is not checking your email against a license list. It has, in fact, promised that it will not do this, which makes sense as most households have a number of family members – each of is supposed to register. iPlayer has been attempting to block VPNs for some time now, but in our tests most still work fine. We are currently working on a system to keep up-to-date with which services work for iPlayer, US Netflix (and maybe some others), so watch this space!

    2. Margaret dit :

Doulgas — is there one from this list that you’ve tested that works? Or do they all?

      1. Douglas Crawford dit :

        Hi Margaret,

They should all work. With Express you may need to jump on its Live Chat to ask which servers are best.

  16. Michael Aitken dit :

    Nord no iplayer
what about the others today please??

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Michael,

We are currently working on a system to keep up-to-date with which services work for iPlayer, US Netflix (and maybe some others). Watch this space!

  17. TalkSpice dit :

NordVPN had some minor issues in the middle of the month but so now it’s working without any issues. Also it works for Netflix on all US servers what I’ve found useful as you could connect to the nearest server

  18. D. F. DeReaper dit :

As of August 4, 2017, the BBC has started blocking NordVPN.

    1. Ray Walsh dit :

Thanks for the update, I have flagged this up with our team for further investigation. Have you tried using various UK servers? The BBC now requires you to also log in, so you will need to create a fake account with a UK address to use iPlayer from now on.

  19. Stewart dit :

Yeah…I have have had Buffered for the past 12 months and after about 1 month BBC was on to the fact I was using a VPN and denied access so, while I can’t speak for other VPN’s, Buffered shouldn’t be on your list of products that will get around that issue.
    Cheers

    Stew

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Stew,

My colleague has this to say: “I use buffered for iplayer every week… you need to clear cookies because BBC stores a cookie about you using a VPN once and then doesn’t let you in again.”

  20. Christopher Loughrey dit :

This wouldn’t be my preferred choice as its Media streamer DNS, that you can apply to your router, can only work for US streaming services, so those who want UK services are left out. Express VPN told me this is their only downside and they are hoping to make it available to other regions soon. That is what I love about Unlocator as its Media DNS can be applied to many regions. It seems this website may be getting commission from this company as it’s certainly not the best VPN service out there as it’s very America-centric.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Christopher,

ExpressVPN (both its VPN and Smart DNS services) work with iPlayer.
