Our Thoughts

PrivateVPN is an amazing service from Sweden that users praise regularly. It is a superb service that has a setup guide for Linux users on its website. It is fast, efficient, easy to use, and extremely reliable. It also provides lightning fast speeds for streaming in HD.

Encryption is military grade OpenVPN and this VPN keeps zero logs. Amazingly, this fantastic VPN is also super cheap. Why not try the 30-day money-back guarantee to see why this VPN is proving so popular?

I've been using PrivateVPN for a couple of months now, switched from PIA who's port forwarding didn't ever seem to work and their support took ages to reply and weren't much help. The support for PrivateVPN has been excellent, and their LiveChat means I get help if I need it when I need it not days late and the Speeds are excellent too - I can't see me needing to change providers again

The service is impeccable in itself, with myriads of supported operating systems, both with their own custom client and with free and open source clients. What really stands out however is the level of support they offer. Not only do they help you solve the problem and answer the questions you have, but they do it at all hours of any day - day or night, Sundays and weekdays, even holidays - you name it. I've never waited more than a couple of hours to get help, even when I've contacted them way past bedtime.

Our Thoughts

Thanks to its tech-heavy focus and lack of customer service skills, AirVPN is not necessarily for everyone. This is a bit of a shame, as not only does AirVPN really care about its customers’ privacy, but it is the clear market leader when it comes to privacy technology. Its open source GUI Linux client (“Eddie”) is identical to the Windows and OSX versions.

This means that users benefit from a firewall-based kill switch and DNS leak protection, port selection, and more. In addition, AirVPN uses very strong encryption, permits VPN obfuscation using SSH and SSL tunneling, supports anonymous Linux VPN use via VPN through Tor, and allows port forwarding.

Pros

  • Linux client (full GUI) with DNS leak protection and kill switch

  • No logs (at all)

  • VPN through Tor

  • Accepts Bitcoin

  • P2P: yes

Cons

  • Techiness puts people off

  • Customer support could be better

Nice review Douglas, I'm another of those totally satisfied customers (using it for 1 year, just renewed for another one). But yes, it is definitely for the more tech-savy crowd, nothing you point your mother at and just say "use that" 😉 Two issues can get really frustrating the mentioned DNS problem when Eddy crashes, which they really should just give a prominent posting at their website as I needed some hours to find the root of the problem and resolve it. The other problem (general VPN problem not AirVPN related) is what I'll call the MTU-Problem. I was at my mothers home who uses Unitymedia cable as a provider and I just couldn't get a stable VPN connection, it worked for a short time and then just failing to transfer anything and sometimes even taking the router with it so I had to reset the router. That took me a lot of time resolving including reading a lot of VPN documentation and all sorts of partially related hints, postings,... You have to lower the maximum MTU-size then it works (eg link-mtu=1300 in the openVPN manual settings). Still don't fully understood how to calculate the optimum MTU-size but playing around with the size should get you a working connection. If I sometimes decide to delve really deep into this topic and finally really understand the parameters (there is the fragment parameter to set and the correct mss-size to get the optimal throughput) then I really have to write a FAQ on this as there is not one easy explanation on the Web. But this is NOT an AirVPN problem, this is related to the provider! So, sorry for the long entry, just wanted to help other people having this problem, as I had big problems finding the cause and solution (and I'm very good at searching the web). Jochen PS: Just adding this for Search Engines to find it, remove if unwanted: Unitymedia VPN problems disconnection

A quick follow-up regarding AirVPN. It appears one of the main founders of AivVPN is Mr. Paolo Brini. He is also a spokesperson for ScambioEtico, an Italian group that campaigns for civil liberties and copyright reform. This bit of info fills in, for me, the statement on AirVPN's website that: "Air VPN was originally founded in 2010, by a group of ‘hacktivists’ and lawyers, both of which were willing to donate their time to a cause that they believed in. The AirVPN system was originally created for the Pirate Party festival in Rome, which shows just how involved they are in the pro-privacy and anonymity scene." This gives me additional confidence and comfort in using AirVPN. Thank you Mr. Brini.

.ne of the interesting and recurring questions that comes up in the 15 years I've been using vpns is how can you decide which ones to trust? Are there some sort of "inside" forums or IRC channels where 'those who know" know who runs various vpns? A simple statement on a vpn's website of their good intentions really isn't worth its screen space. For example Perfect Privacy, which provides a very good quality vpn service with easy triple hopping would seem to be a trustworthy operation based on their statement that they are a group of "privacy advocates". Until you find out that this group of "privacy advocates" is founded and run by serious neo-Nazis. It seems very hard to determine who is actually behind many of the vpns so you could make a best judgement about their likely trustworthiness. Are there any recognized persons respected in the privacy community that vouch for particular vpns? (similar in principle to reviewing public encryption code). There ought to be. Does EFF for example vouch for the bona fides of any vpns? I would like to hear some trusted person vouch for AirVPN for example. I've found it very hard to find out anything about who is behind Air, just as it was hard to find out who was behind Perfect Privacy. It would seem nearly dereliction of duty for TLOs not to be operating some vpn honey pots, but how would you identify them? Without some kind of a web of trust, choosing a vpn is nothing more than a crap shoot.

Hi, Douglas I have to agree with all the previous posters that your review is excellent and IMHO, spot on! I've been using Air for about a year, it's the 5th vpn I've used in the last 15 years. The functionality is superb and, as you said, it's actually very easy (and reliable) to use. But, as again you put very nicely, the sort of icy ubertech can be at times frustrating. And I'm pretty tech savvy. At the moment I'm felling frustrated that some forum posts there were blocked because they weren't sufficiently tech focused. God forbid you should talk about the political environment of privacy. Well, with Air it seems warm n fuzzy isn't an option, you have to be satisfied with technical expertise par excellence. Which is what I've chosen by re-upping. As a future improvement to their service I would really like to see them add selectable multihop to Eddie. But they don't seem well disposed to considering suggestions. Perhaps it's just as well that they remain a smaller niche provider...increasing size often deteriorates quality. It does worry me that the group and all its severs (but one) are located in 15 Eyes countries. It would be comforting to be able to multihop (easily) through non-cooperating political jurisdictions. Cheers.

Worst service ever! I was happily signed in the web site and then i decide to log out. Then i was not able to sign in again! I asked for a password reset and after several trials i finally decided to change the password to the most difficult one: 1111. NOTHING, always the same message: "username or password incorrect" They do not support anything else than OpenVPN. I wander why everyone is surprised by the fact that many potential users seem to be put off by AirVPN. Only few top routers support this protocol, and even less xDSL modem router do. Thank God i was smart enough to spend only 7 Euros in this junk.

Our Thoughts

Like AirVPN, this small Swedish provider really cares about its users’ privacy. It even accepts anonymous cash payments sent by post! It also provides Linux users with a full version of its GUI desktop client. This protects Linux VPN connections with a firewall based kill switch and DNS leak protection, and allows port forwarding. In fact, the Mullvad client is the only VPN software I am aware of properly route IPv6 DNS requests (even AirVPN only disables IPv6).

It hardly needs saying that Mullvad keeps no logs at all, and it now uses strong encryption. The main drawback, however, is that Mullvad runs servers in a relatively limited number locations (mainly in Europe but also North America, Australia, and the UK).

.antastic vpn with fast and clean connections, a lot of servers , great client with killswitch and very useful advanced settings to personnalise the connection (mtu settings for example to bypass vpn detection) Not only one disco at all since a year ! The Team is great , they are deeply improved in internet freedom and the service is fast and fiendy. You can get a software client under Linux ( very rare) Mac and Windows Open Connect for Ios and Android (working really well) Mullvad deserve to be better know , and belongs to the top of the cream of existing VPNs

One of the best VPN of the market for Linux . Great client 25 countries good encryption excellent privacy (bitcoin and even cash payment by mail with an anonymous subscription number !) Not expensive (5€ per month) No leak , Killswitch , adjustable parameters like MTU value , forwarded ports etc.. in client vers 63) No blacklisted ip !!! (not the case of most of "big" vpns) Possibility to bypass vpn detection In one year I've never encountered any issue with MULLVAD

Less than 1 Mbit/s? Some Windows computers have packet loss problems with OpenVPN over UDP. One thing that can help is to make the tunnel run over TCP instead. Go to Advanced in Settings and set protocol = tcp in the [Client] section.

Our Thoughts

ExpressVPN is a popular VPN service thanks to great 24/7 customer service, easy-to-use software, and a 30-day no quibbles money back guarantee that actually does what it promises.

Linux users are not as well catered for as users of other Operating Systems, but ExpressVPN does at least provide a basic custom Linux VPN client. It is Terminal command-line only, but works well, and is simple enough to use. The Ubuntu 64-bit version works just fine for my Mint.

Update: The ExpressVPN Linux client now features DNS leak protection.

Pros

  • Linux client (command line)

  • No usage logs

  • 30-day money back guarantee

  • Three simultaneous connections

Cons

  • A bit pricey – but worth it!

Used purevpn and it was a joke! Every time I logged onto one of their sites, I ran at least 5 leak tests! Every time it showed my internet provider included in the results! So much for security. Also, whenever I downloaded anything, my firewall went nuts blocking intrusions! Spent a total of 16 hours with them trying to resolve dns leaks & nothing worked! Express VPN is sooooooo sweet, no leaks, fast downloads & my firewall has no intrusion blocks! I've already had 2 warnings from my internet provider regarding downloads using pure VPN. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

Cyberghost is not good tried for their 7 day trial, when installed said it had expired. I Mentioned this to Support Team, and they told me that happens if i installed on my pc before, which i havent even been with the vpn provider idiots. Cut long story short i brought this vpn for $11.95 the software took 35 seconds to come on desktop and connecting to server took 45 seconds to connect mostly said server cant connect even though tried servers in my own country n said coudn't connect, now going through process having my money back as it within 30 day period. Conclusion: would i recommend them, i certainly would not recommend them at all. Support useless, Software is slow to load (even tho i have a quad core pc 16gb ram) and servers took forever to connect. only positive is there features and they dont keep logs, but i defo wont be going with them again 🙁

AirVPN in Linux

Conclusion

    1. Hi Richard,

Indeed, and thanks to pointing this out. The provider summary in this article is outdated (although I have just fixed this issue). As I clearly state in my full Mullvad Review, Mulvad does now support UK servers. We are currently working on a way to ensure summary details across our articles stay as up-to-date as possible).
