After the demise of KickassTorrents and ExtraTorrent, could these two massive shutdowns spell the end for The Pirate Bay in 2018?

The massively popular torrent site is having issues staying afloat and available to users. It remains to be seen whether this is simply temporary downtime with Cloudflare errors or something more serious such as a potential countrywide ban in New Zealand and Austria.

Is The Pirate Bay down for you? You might want to see if you can use a VPN to access The Pirate Bay. Check out some of the best alternatives to The Pirate Bay further down!

I’m going to give you my ranking of the best torrent sites in 2018! First, let’s do a brief recap of the big changes to the torrent scene over the years.

2016 was undeniably a big year for torrents and file sharing, with the most significant development occurring when the world’s most popular torrent database, KickassTorrents, was shut down by the authorities. Another big blow came when Torrentz, a torrent search engine giant, unexpectedly closed its doors. These sudden closures left two big holes in the torrent community.

In 2017, ExtraTorrent also joined the list of torrent sites that have permanently shut their doors. I’ve updated this list to also include some alternatives to ExtraTorrent.

5 Best Torrent Sites in 2018

1. The Pirate Bay

If you’ve heard of KickassTorrents or Torrentz, the chances are that you’ve probably heard of The Pirate Bay (TPB). Dubbed “the galaxy’s most resilient BitTorrent site,” TPB has evaded numerous shutdowns and domain seizures in recent years.

The Pirate Bay

The Pirate Bay is currently the most popular torrent index in the world, with an impressive global Alexa ranking of 131. A simple interface, a huge selection of torrents, and minimal adverts all contribute to TPB’s popularity. If there ever was an alternative or successor to KickassTorrents, TPB is it!

2. RarBG

RarBG started off as a BitTorrent tracker in 2008, and has risen to provide torrent files and magnet links to over 300,000 users a day. The website stands out for being easy to understand for beginners, while a huge community also regularly posts feedback on torrents.

Originally hosted in Bulgaria, RarBG has had to do some hopping around to evade the authorities. Unfortunately, some countries have banned RarBG altogether, including Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Portugal, and India. However, using a VPN while in these countries will allow you to bypass these bans and access RarBG!

3. is another BitTorrent tracker, although slightly different from TPB and RarBG, with a heavy specialization in movies. Visitors get to enjoy’s smooth interface, which is perhaps my favorite on this list. There are also an impressive number of movies in high-def 720p, 1080p, and even 3D.

The ability to choose movie quality is unique among torrent sites. Low bandwidth users certainly appreciate this option. It’s important to remember that only provides movie torrents – those looking to torrent software or games are better off using some of the other sites on this list.

4. 1337X

1337X is another torrent site that has recently emerged following the demise of KAT and ExtraTorrent. Founded in 2007, a full revamp of the 1337X site brought a massive jump in traffic. With a new, clean index page and a wide range of movies, TV, and games, 1337X is a powerful torrent site that gets all the important things right. Perhaps reinforcing this is the fact that Google bans the site from Google Search!

While 1337X might not have the same user base or ad-free experience as some of the other sites I’ve mentioned here, the overall look and feel of the site oozes class. Once again, the one small knock on 1337X are the heavy doses of ads scattered throughout the site.

5. Zooqle

Zooqle is a newcomer to the peer-to-peer (P2P)/torrenting scene, (although one can hardly tell with the awesome and highly intuitive interface). You can create an account on the site (you will need a email address, username, and password to sign up) to manage subscriptions to your favorite TV shows and movies. With over 1,300 TV shows and 30,000 movies to choose from, Zooqle is an excellent way to satisfy TV cravings and binge watching.

Another nice touch with Zooqle is the absence of aggressive advertisements and popups (like on ExtraTorrent). While the Zooqle torrent database isn’t as large as the other big names on this list, the overall quality and feel of the site does inspire confidence with this new torrent site.

Torrenting Sites FAQs

What Is the Difference Between Public and Private Torrent Sites?

While searching for a high-quality torrent site, you’ve probably noticed that there are public and private sites. The big difference here is that a private torrent site will require either some form of payment (subscriptions aren’t uncommon) or an invitation from a current member. Private sites (such as Demonoid or BitSoup) tend to have faster releases when it comes to new movies, TV shows, or software. Download speeds also tend to be much better within these private communities.

Public torrent sites, on the other hand, are free and open to the public. They mainly rely on adverts to cover their costs. An excellent example of a public torrent site was the aforementioned KickassTorrents (KAT), which had about one million daily users when it was shut down in July 2016.

With these shutdowns and arrests shaking up the torrent scene, millions of people were left scrambling to find alternatives that could fill the void. Luckily, there are some new faces out there that have emerged as viable replacements for KAT and Torrentz. Below, I’ll highlight five of the best torrent sites for 2018.

What Is a VPN and Will It Keep Me Safe When I Download Torrents?

Downloading copyrighted content could get you in trouble with the authorities. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts any data received (downloads) or sent (uploads) from your computer. A VPN when torrenting is practically essential, as it makes it near-impossible for an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or copyright holder to trace internet activity back to a specific user.

Torrenting is a great way to save money and watch your favorite TV shows and movies. Invest a couple of dollars in a high-quality VPN for torrenting could greatly reduce your risk of getting fined or (worst case scenario) doing jail time! does not condone copyright infringement. While we are aware that VPNs can be used to spoof your location to another country, and thus overcome geo-restrictions, their primary purpose is to provide you with online security and privacy. First and foremost, this is why we recommend using a VPN.

An alternative to torrenting is to use streaming sites. However, it’s equally as important to use a VPN on particular services. For more information, check out our guide to unblocking all cartoons with a VPN.

Best Torrent Sites in 2018: Conclusion

2016/2017 were big years for the world of torrents and the P2P community. Website shutdowns, police investigations, and increasing media attention have cast a big spotlight on the community.

With governments and copyright holders ready to battle against torrent sites, 2018 is shaping up to be another exciting year for torrenting. Will heavy hitters such as The Pirate Bay or RarBG join KickassTorrents on law enforcement’s growing list of shuttered torrent sites?

If you wantch to watch movies or play games for free, downloading them via torrent is illegal and Law enforcement everywhere is coming up with new ways to detect and punish individuals who violate copyright law. The best way to avoid them is to use a VPN when torrenting. Receiving a simple copyright infringement notice in the mail is one thing, but having to pay thousands of dollars in fines or even doing jail time is a whole different matter.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi tristan,

Um.. thepiratebay(dot)org has most certainly not shut down. In fact, I have it loaded in another tab now. I’ll ask Thomas to look into Extratorrent.

    3. wayne dit :

is extratorrent a private tracker site?

      1. Douglas Crawford dit :

        Hi wayne,

  10. Marcuss dit :

Please also make some up to date comparison like here: I is comparing online torrent clients.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Marcuss,

Although this article was always intended to discuss convention stand-alone desktop torrent clients, I think an article about cloud torrents is a great idea. Stay posted.

      1. Douglas Crawford dit :

        Hi Ashish,

That looks like a good list. As we don’t have such a list ourselves yet, I am happy for you to post your link here, but I hope you understand that if does publish such a list, I will have to remove it.

  11. EFF dit :

“As you prbably already know, torrenting is illegal”

Incorrect. – Some content that are available via torrents may be protected from copyrighted, that may make it illegal for you to download.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi EFF,

Strictly speaking you are, of course, correct. But who visits a torrent site in order to download content not protected by copyright?

    2. steve dit :

Still, torrenting is not illegal, like clicking on a link is not illegal, yet, and it is important to be clear on this if we are to maintain our rights. And yes, there are plenty of legitimate uses of bittorrent, for example many linux distros are released as torrents, etc., etc. Sheesh.

    3. Doranwen dit :

Linux distros are frequently distributed via torrent. It’s a lot faster than downloading it from an FTP server somewhere, generally. So maybe that doesn’t quite count as “going to a torrent site to download content not protected by copyright”, since technically one goes to the website for the particular distro and grabs the torrent from there (gotta make sure the hash checks out anyway), but the *mechanism* of torrenting most definitely is NOT illegal.

      1. Douglas Crawford dit :

        Hi Doranwen,

Indeed. There are also plenty of legal torrent sites out there.

  12. riktorscale dit :

extra torrent maybe back but it demands you download usenet client which want payment details

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi riktorscale,

Hmm. Just checked and this is true :(.

  13. sad rat dit :

ExtraTorrent is back. It has a different extension. Go to the site and you will be redirected to the new site. New ExtraTorrent is almost the same as the old.

I go there almost daily. It’s been back for about a month or so.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi sad rat,

      Thanks for the update1

    2. Mike dit :

Hi sad rt looks like your link wss removed can you mail it to me (@)

      1. Douglas Crawford dit :

        Hi Mike (and sad rat),

I certainly did not remove it deliberately. When I visit, however, I just get a CloudFlare page that does allow me to fill in the captcha…

  14. Jual Obat Penirum dit :

  15. Rick dit :

Just finished scanning the rest of the site’s comments. As you know not all sites have all movies. In searching for obscure/older movies I often go to many sites. Thanks to your page, I’ve picked up several alternatives to my usual go-to sites.

    Thanks and keep it going

  16. Paul dit :

kat should be added to the list. The official site is back up.

  24. Sam Bell dit :

I would like to know more ,I am not sure how a VPM can be used on WIN7

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Sam,

Please see my VPNs for Beginners Guide. To run a VPN in Windows 7, just sigh-up for a service, download, install, and run its software (if the service offers customs software), or follow the providers setup guides for manual setup. It’s easy!

  25. Bob dit :

    ExtraTorrent has shut down permanently

ExtraTorrent with all mirrors goes offline.. We permanently erase all data.
Stay away from fake ExtraTorrent websites and clones.

      Hi Bob,

Yeah, we know :\. Thanks for passing on, though. I believe Thomas plans to update this list in the near future.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi again Akasa,

Thanks, that looks like a sweet site. I seems this article is in need of an update…

  26. Akasa dit :

And bitsnoop its out they closed info on their homepage.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Akasa,

Yeah, I’m sorry to report that Bitsnoop is no more.

  27. Zeppfan dit :

Sorry to say this, but, The Pirate Bay is down.

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Zeppfan,

I noticed that yesterday, but just checked, and it seems to be up and running again. Yay!

  28. Micha43 dit :

You should start using this great torrent search engine –
    It shows tons of results

    1. Douglas Crawford dit :

      Hi Micha43,

Just checked it out, and looks a sweet meta search engine. Thanks for the tip!

  29. Douglas Crawford dit :

    Hi NoneYa DamnBusiness,

That is why you should use a VPN. We have not listed private torrent sites because to join these you need an invitation. A VPN will prevent you getting caught when using a public torrent site.

  30. Aarti dit :

Cool list. Been looking for a good alternatives for KAT and Torrentz. I use RARBG a lot these days and the idope search engine. Many of these sites are blocked here in India. So I use to find alternatives and unblock the sites. Hope India stops blocking all my fav sites. It’s getting very annoying.

  31. Littlebunevil dit :

I’d pick the same tbh. Although, I maybe prefer rarbg to PB. Coupled with uTorrent or depending on the situation.. and where I’m located.
