MyVPN Review

Important Update:

MyVPN has now shut down its service. Existing customers can email support for information on migrating to their partner VPN, HideIPVPN.

As of 1 September 2015, MyVPN has shut down and partnered with HideIPVPN to take care of its remaining customers.

MyVPN brands itself as a "cheep and cheerful" VPN. While the former we can't really agree with, our overall impression of MyVPN was pleasant and this brand new US provider has a great core service that gives them a fantastic base to build upon. (Please bear in mind this is a completely different team and service than MyVPN.pro, and the two are in no way affiliated with each other)

Features

MyVPN is a very small US based provider that opened it's "tunnels" to the public less than 6 months ago in October 2014. It's young age shows on the service, but overall they provide a very rounded service with most of the required core items not only present but performing well.

Since MyVPN is a brand new provider it comes as no surprise that they only have servers in 4 countries. Naturally these are the three required & expected; NL, UK, US and there is also Hong Kong for their Asian customers. While their servers list (at least for the moment) is very small they do allow a huge 5 simultaneous connections which means that you can always be connected.

Speed and Performance

We tested the MyVPN service for speed, DNS leaks and IP confirmation. The IP tests all came back fine and with the DNS leak protection enabled the only result we obtained was their servers - this was great news. While their speeds weren't the best we've seen (as the table below shows) they remained more than adequate to stream and access our favourite content. We also had no issues with the EU->US connection speeds.

Price

As with all VPN providers, MyVPN provides increasing discounts the longer you sign up for. While their monthly plan is slightly expensive at $9.99/month, if you sign up for a whole year then the price is a very reasonable $4.83/month.

MyVPN also provides a three day free trial to test their service and not only is it slightly difficult to find this, you are also required to enter your payment details for this. Also if you are dissatisfied with their service and forget to cancel it then they will automatically start charging you.
They also provide a 7 day money back guarantee in case your not pleased with the service, and this is absolutely quabble free so even if you enjoyed the service but just changed your mind - you will still get your money back!

In order to purchase your MyVPN account you can use your credit/debit card or a PayPal account, and also accept the secure payment type Bitcoin.

Customer Service

The most prominent support that MyVPN provides is the standard Ticket Support. They maintain this 24/7/365 and whenever we used it, we found them to be friendly, technically knowledgeable and always received a reply within a few hours. Alongside this they also have phone support for US citizens and for larger technical issues they will also provide remote desktop.

While overall these support mechanism are great we feel that they could really benefit from a full feature knowledge base and/or forum.

Privacy and security

Firstly, with regards to protocols MyVPN provides the whole range: PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN and IKEv. For all par PPTP they provide the maximum of 256 bit encryption as long as your device supports it. For OpenVPN (the protocol we recommend) they use AES and a 2048bit handshake - a great plus for this little VPN provider. Alongside this they use LibreSSL which is better for security compared to OpenSSL. They also have a MimicVPN Protocol which is an advanced version of OpenVPN which they developed in order to bypass different firewalls, restrictions and DPI (Deep Packet Inspection).

Secondly, when it comes to logging, MyVPN does keep connection logs so if you're absolute privacy their service isn't for you. Otherwise they have clearly outlined what information they log. They only keep their logs for a day and afterwards fully purge them so this shouldn't worry you too much.

Their Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy albeit brief they detail what information they collect, how they use it and also how they manage their networks. The only issue we had was with regards to this sentence: Simultaneous logins from multiple IP addresses from different countries (aren't allowed). As this seems a very strict rule and one that would really restrict the average person's use of their service, we questioned them about and it and they said the following: It was added to prevent share logins. As long as customer doesn't abuse rest of rules we do not react on multiply logins. This is not ideal but clearly they are taking these steps in order to avoid abuse.

With regards to P2P they do not allow it on their US servers and they request that you only use legal P2P on their other servers.

Final Thoughts

Overall MyVPN is a nice little VPN company with a feature-full client, great encryption and a very friendly support team. While they still have some progress to make we are happy to recommend their use - though it's only worth it's value if you sign up for 6 months or more so make sure you check out their free trial.
