2017-2018 NFL Season

When Does the NFL Season Start?

The 2017-2018 NFL season runs from Thursday 7 September 2017 to Sunday 4 February 2018. The season consists of a 17-week schedule, with games every Sunday (starting between 13:00 and 20:00 EDT) and a mix of games sprinkled in during the week as well.

Thursday’s Week 3 opener between the 49ers and Rams gets underway at 20:30 EDT on NFL Network. This start time translates to 01:30 BST for viewers in the UK, while Australian NFL fans can tune in on Friday morning at 10:30 AEST.

Check out the full NFL Week 3 Schedule below!

How Can I Watch NFL Games Online?

NFL Game Pass: Seven-day Free Trial!

NFL Game Pass is the best option if you want to watch NFL games inside or outside the United States. The big thing to remember with Game Pass is that if you sign up to the service outside of the US, you can stream every game live as they are happening. Game Pass subscribers in the US will only have access to full replays, NFL Redzone, and the NFL Films/NFL Network Archive.

NFL Game Pass’s price can be a tough selling point ($199.99 for an annual subscription). However, it’s worth mentioning that new Game Pass subscribers get a seven-day free trial to properly test out Game Pass before buying.

Another issue that could arise with using NFL Game Pass is that depending on where you live, you could be subject to blackouts (see above image). Luckily, you can bypass these silly blackout restrictions and watch live NFL games by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to change your device’s location.

Sling TV: Seven-day Free Trial!

Sling TV is another online streaming service that allows you to stream most NFL games online. Starting at $20 a month (Sling Orange), you get access to several channels, including: ESPN, ESPN 2, FOX, and NBC. Another great thing about Sling TV is that new customers get a seven-day free trial! This means you can sign up and watch NFL games for free!

Unfortunately, Sling TV is only available in the US. Luckily, a VPN service can help you unblock Sling TV from anywhere in the world! Follow my step-by-step instructions on how to use a VPN to watch Sling TV!

Free NFL Streams Subreddit: Warning!

For those out there who truly don’t want to spend a cent when watching NFL football, the best option (although I don’t encourage this one!) is to check out the NFL Streams Subreddit for any free streams of the matches. Links to streams are usually posted an hour before the match is scheduled to start.

I must mention that using illegal Reddit streams as a viewing method is risky business, especially when factoring in the legal and security risks associated with these streams.

Simply put, watching these streams could expose your PC to a deadly mix of malware and indestructible advertisements. You could also find yourself in trouble with legal authorities for watching a copyrighted stream. Use a VPN to protect yourself and your digital privacy today! does not condone copyright infringement. While we are aware that VPNs can be used to spoof your location to another country, and thus overcome geo-restrictions, their primary purpose is to provide you with online security and privacy. First and foremost, this is why we recommend using a VPN.

How to Watch an NFL Live Stream with a VPN

  1. Choose from our best VPN services list, or sign straight up to my personal favorite, NordVPN.
  2. Install the VPN software on your internet-connected device (check with the VPN provider to make sure your device is supported!).
  3. Select one of the streaming options I’ve highlighted above and sign up.
  4. Connect to a VPN server in a country or city fitting your requirements.
  5. Those wanting to bypass NFL blackouts should select a VPN server in a city close to where the game is being played.
  6. Once connected, go to the streaming service you’ve selected and sign up or log in. Done? Then you’re all set to start streaming NFL games!

Avoid NFL Blackouts with a VPN

If you’re trying to stream an NFL game, blackout restrictions could stop you from watching and rooting for your favorite team. Blackouts occur when a specific region or city doesn’t have the broadcasting rights for a particular game or event.

Unfortunately, the NFL has the strictest blackout policy of the four major American sports leagues.

Luckily, you can skip blackout restrictions on NFL games by using a Virtual Private Network. This involves setting a new IP address on your device in an area where the game isn’t under blackout. Simply follow my instructions to find an IP address in a city where the game is being broadcast!

2017-2018 NFL Season: What You Need to Know

The 2017-2018 NFL season kicks off with the defending champion, the New England Patriots, facing off against Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs at Gillette Stadium in New England.

The first pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, Myles Garret, looks to revamp last year’s worst team in the Cleveland Browns, while Leonard Fournette and the Jacksonville Jaguars will also try and prove the doubters wrong.

Farewell San Diego…

The San Diego Chargers are another team to relocate to Los Angeles, after the Rams moved there last year. After nearly 55 years in San Diego, the Chargers are hoping that increased visibility and a bigger market will lead to greater success on the field.

  1. Thomas. Thank you for the article. Question.
I still don’t understand what to do if I want to see a game in NY and I’m in Houston. How do I pick a NY server for example to be able to watch the game when I login to the local station for example? or the only way to do it is paying for a service like Sling.?

    1. Hi Andres,

Thanks! My instructions for evading blackouts are meant for people with a service like NFL GamePass, Sling TV, or CBS All Access. If you have one of these streaming services certain games might get blacked out in your area. Just connect to a VPN server in the city where the game is being played and the game will be unblocked.
