How we picked our top Netflix VPNs

Our experts review VPNs on a daily basis, searching for the very best the industry has to offer. We use our VPN reviews – and data collected from our BestVPN Awards process – to carefully consider all the important attributes of a great VPN.

The factors we analyze include connection speeds, reliability, performance, encryption strength, privacy policy, legal jurisdiction, price, free trial or money-back guarantee, and, of course, the ability to bypass Netflix proxy blocks (Netflix error code).

VPN Netflix | FAQs

Netflix works very hard to block VPN servers as soon as they find them. Netflix unblock technology requires constant investment and is a game of cat and mouse between VPN providers and the streaming giant. This has resulted in a great deal of frustration, questions and misconceptions from users who have picked a service that isn’t robust enough to stay one step ahead of Netflix. Below we try to alleviate these frustrations by answering the more common questions we encounter.

What is a VPN for Netflix?

A VPN is a technology that creates a private, secure network over a public one (the internet). By connecting to a server in the US, you can gain access to the complete Netflix catalog on any platform. It doesn’t matter where you live, or more importantly, where you purchased your subscription – with a VPN, all of the content can be unlocked.

If you would like to know more about how a VPN helps you appear in another country, check out our guide to geo-spoofing with a VPN.

Netflix VPN key Features

A VPN for Netflix USA must have a server that is fast enough to stream HD content. Many VPNs have overloaded servers and this can cause almost constant buffering. A VPN must be able to provide speeds capable of streaming Netflix. In addition, it must provide servers capable of successfully circumventing geo-restrictions.

If you’re a speed freak when it comes to download speeds, take a look at our fast VPNs list – but be aware that some of the services in this list might not be able to unblock Netflix in other countries.

Does Netflix block VPNs? Beat the Netflix VPN ban!

Netflix is aware that people are using VPNs and Proxy servers to access more content. While Netflix would like nothing more than to open its entire catalog up to the world, various licensing restrictions prevent the company from being able to do so. As a result, Netflix closely monitors IP addresses to see how many people log in from each one. If too many people use the same VPN server to access Netflix, the company blocks that server.

In an interview on the subject, Netflix’s David Fullagar said:

If all of our content were globally available, there wouldn’t be a reason for members to use proxies or 'unblockers' to fool our systems into thinking they’re in a different country than they’re actually in..."

So, perhaps one day you won’t need a VPN to access the full Netflix catalog, but today is not that day.

Why did my VPN stop working?

Unblocking Netflix requires resources and expertise. Not every VPN provider understands how Netflix bans VPNs. The majority of VPN providers can’t find a way to keep Netflix unblocked.

The VPN providers in this article are intent on continuing to provide access to Netflix USA. They work constantly to prepare extra servers.

Is using a VPN with Netflix illegal?

No. Because you pay for Netflix, you are entitled to access the content. However, it is a breach of the Terms of Use. Netflix says that customers may be cut off for unblocking a foreign region. However, in practice, this has never happened. Netflix knows that you are a paying customer and it doesn’t want to lose that custom. That is why Netflix focuses on blocking VPN IP addresses.

It is also worth noting that copyright laws differ from country to country. That is why all the VPNs in this guide have watertight privacy policies that do not log what their users do.

Which Netflix VPNs DO NOT work?

Most VPNs do not unblock Netflix anymore. To help you out, we have included this list of well-known VPNs that we know do not provide access to Netflix US:

What content can I unblock?

It’s no secret that unblocking US Netflix is the Holy Grail for most VPN users.  According to our recent “Notflix” study, the US market has access to over 2,000 more titles than the next biggest library, Canada.Netflix US Vs Canada

So, if you live in Hong Kong, for example, you could stand to access over 5,000 additional titles by simply connecting to a US Netflix server. However, the world is your oyster when it comes to unblocking with a Netflix VPN. If you want to access the UK library, simply connect to a UK server.

For more information on the number of Netflix titles that are available for each country, check out our Notflix tool.

Free VPN for Netflix

Did you Google “Netflix VPN free” or “unblock Netflix free”? Unfortunately, a free VPN will not unblock Netflix. However, if you want a free VPN for some other reason, we urge you to stick to the providers in our best free VPNs guide.

Can I unblock Netflix with a VPN when traveling abroad?

When you leave your own country on vacation, you might get more or less Netflix titles when you log in. The size of the catalog varies wildly from country to country. You only get to see whatever is licensed in that country. It doesn’t matter where you bought your subscription, it matters where you are!

Using a VPN, you can pretend to be in your home country to watch your regular Netflix catalog. Or, even better, connect to the US library to access ALL that Netflix has to offer. Remember: you can pretend to be in any country to watch any Netflix catalog.

VPN, Netflix & Chill | Conclusion

In this article, we have revealed five super-secure VPNs that will let you access the full Netflix catalog. All our recommended providers have lightning-fast VPN servers for streaming content in HD. These services are completely reliable, have outstanding customer support, software for all platforms, and are very easy to use.

  1. Here’s my test with PrivateVPN and I use it to unblock US, Canada and UK Netflix from the Philippines.

    without PrivateVPN:
    latency: 15 ms
    download: 21.44 mbps
    upload: 19. 80 mbps

    with PrivateVPN (Los Angeles server):
    latency: 160 ms
    download: 19.81 mbps
    upload: 19.01 mbps

    with PrivateVPN (London 1 server)
    latency: 267 ms
    download: 17.20 mbps
    upload: 2.97 mbps

I think it’s a very good bargain considering that an annual subscription is only $50 unlike ExpressVPN which is $100. It may not have the same number of servers as ExpressVPN but PrivateVPN suits my needs.

  2. So I live in mainland europe, but am from the UK, and want to use a VPN to access UK services such as iPlayer, which would also give me UK netflix. Is it possible to also have the same VPN to access US netflix and it’s bigger library as well? Or would I need to get 2 VPNs, one for each country, and switch between them? (I would probably prioritise UK and wouldn’t get 2 VPNs, just wanted to know if it was possible)

    1. Hi Pd,

The same VPN will work – just change VPN servers to the correct country. Do be sure, though, to take advantage of any free trials or money back guarantees to check the VPN service isn’t being blocked by Netfix (or any other service you want to access).

  3. You said “Some of the VPNs in this guide even allow people to rent their own permanent personal VPN IP address, which nobody else uses.”

Did I miss something? Because in the article above you said Express VPN does provide Dedicated IP addresses but not personal dedicated IP.

So is there a provider who provides Netflix Unblock and at the same time allows you to purchase a Personal Dedicated IP for you to use?

I have heard torguard does it but im not sure about it

    1. NordVPN rents dedicated IPs. I’ll update the article to make that clear. Yes, Torguard does rent dedicated IPs it is a pretty good VPN too! Please check their full review here at BestVPN to get a better idea of the VPN if you are interested. Otherwise, NordVPN will be the way to go!

    2. So If I say NordVPN vs TorGuard what do you suggest? Do you have a comparison for both of them? can you link me to it please.

Also I have another big question to ask about choosing the right VPN for me does this site have a forum section or something? or can I ask it here?
