5 Best Netflix VPN Providers

Netflix is the most renowned and popular video streaming service in the world. Nearly as famous as Netflix itself, however, is the knowledge that some VPNs can be used to access the more comprehensive US catalog; from anywhere in the world. Now that a Proxy for Netflix isn’t an option, no matter whereabouts outside the US you are; using a Netflix VPN to spoof your IP address to inside the States is going to massively increase your viewing pleasure.

Unfortunately, the unblocking ability of VPNs has caused Netflix to react by cutting them (nearly all) off. Luckily, stopping each and everyone isn’t easy, and some VPNs are managing to find solutions to get around the Netflix VPN blockade. On the other hand, Netflix keeps working hard to cut off VPN servers’ IP addresses.

As you can see, the status of affairs is a contest of strength between the two conflicting sides and few VPNs are surviving. Don’t worry, though, because in this 5 Best VPNs for Netflix we give you the benefit of our knowledge by pinpointing the very best VPN providers for the job. All of these VPNs are successfully focussing their efforts on continuing to provide access to the US catalog of titles.

Do bear in mind, however, that this is an ever-changing situation. We will, of course, be monitoring developments constantly to keep this article updated should anything change. We have communicated with the VPNs on this list, and it is our understanding that they are confident about being able to continue unblocking Netflix in a new way, each time that they get banned. Phew!

So if Netflix isn’t available in your country. Or you would like to watch your Netflix while on vacation. Or perhaps you just like value for money. No matter what, we are sure there is a service on this top 5 VPNs for Netflix list that will be ideal. So, go ahead, and take a look at the five best Netflix VPN providers  in 2016.

4.6/5

NordVPN

  • ProsPROS
  • Unblocks multiple Netflix regions
  • SmartPlay option is superb
  • P2P is allowed
  • Fantastic support team
  • ConsCONS
  • Slow on double-hop encryption (not an issue for Netflix fans)

Alongside US Netflix, they can also provide unblocking for the UK, German, Dutch, French, and Swedish regions! If that’s not enough, then you’ll love their SmartPlay functionality. When enabled, this allows you to stream US Netflix irrelevant of which server you’re connected to.

To top of all of that Netflix VPN goodness, NordVPN also provides top of the line security. With no-logs, a Panimanian headquarter and even the option of Bitcoin payment, you can’t go wrong. However, if streaming is your primary objective, then avoid their double-hop servers as these drastically reduce your connection speeds. If you want to find out for yourself how great NordVPN is, then click the button below. Should you not enjoy their service, then don’t worry, as with any decent VPN provider, they offer a 30 day money back guarantee.

VPNs for Netflix Considerations

Netflix has changed a lot since it started out posting DVDs to subscribers back in 1997.

These days, with a massive 69 million users around the globe, Netflix is one of the most diverse and widely loved media services around (managing to outdo competitive firms like Amazon Prime, Hulu, and HBO on demand). Immaculate brand identity has allowed Netflix to dominate the market; positioning itself as the go-to video streaming service worldwide.

On its way to the top, Netflix has become a content sponsor and now provides exclusive shows –  House of Cards & Black Is The New Orange – spring to mind.

Sadly, because of licensing restrictions placed on Netflix by third party content makers, what you get to see on Netflix changes from place to place (as does the cost of subscribing).

On top of that, US subscribers on vacation (and military stationed abroad) can’t access their usual catalog.  With these details in mind, it becomes staggeringly obvious why VPNs and Netflix are such an incredibly popular mix.

Is Netflix VPN legal?

Back in 2014, Netflix put a clause in its Terms of Service (ToS) that informs subscribers that if they are caught unblocking with a VPN – they can be cut off.  While it is completely normal for this to put off some Netflix subscribers from using a VPN, the other side of the coin is that Netflix has not actually begun cutting people off for VPN use.     So what gives?

The most likely explanation for the lack of bans is that singling out valuable customers – who pay to watch Netflix – would actually work contrary to the interests of shareholders.

Most folks believe the extra clause was put in the ToS to placate the Hollywood production houses.

Those film companies produce content and license the movies at varying prices to different regions (depending on the price they can negotiate from that geographic region). That is why those movie studios don’t want you to see certain movies where you live – the rights haven’t been bought yet!

What does this all mean?

Even though Netflix has added a VPN-banning clause to its ToS, it remains terribly improbable that Netflix will ever start cutting off users on mass for VPN use. Concentrating instead on the job of cutting off the VPN services themselves to cure ‘the problem’.

Not all about the US!

While many users concentrate on the US Netflix, people also use VPNs to access different regions’ Netflix service. In American Samoa, for instance, the service shows viewers 98.8 of the full US catalog – that is nearly as much as the US catalog. In Puerto Rico it is possible to access 82.89 of the full catalog, that is far more than the measly 22.69 that Spain gets and even worse 8.53 Hong Kong has access to.

As you are starting to realize there are plenty of locations to spoof your IP address to; in order to access a larger Netflix catalog. For that reason, the VPN providers on this top 5 list allow you to spoof your IP address to many places around the world.

That way you can take advantage of the many options that are available to you for unblocking depending on where you are in the world. In the United Arab Emirates, for instance, where they only get 31.26 it is worth noting that there are roughly 80 countries above it to spoof into.

So, if there is a certain place that you are especially interested in – such as American Samoa or Guadalupe – it is worth checking the VPN’s website to be absolutely certain of being able to achieve the IP spoof that you want. It is important that you check if that is a priority for you, so be sure to click through to each one and search for servers on their website – they always have a comprehensive list.

Needless to say that another essential factor when streaming in HD is a fast Internet connection. While it is true that VPNs do slow down Internet connection speeds a little, the providers we have chosen are there because they only impact data traffic speeds a very small amount.

On top of that, all of the VPNs on this list allow you to choose from West Coast US servers (ideal if you live in Asia and Australia) and servers on the US’ East Coast (perfect for unblocking US Netflix from the UK or the EU.)

Do I need to do anything else?

A final theme that often comes up: Some readers are always concerned that because they have a subscription to Netflix in France, the UK or Australia (or anywhere else) –  they will need more than a VPN to access the US Netflix. This is completely incorrect.  Despite subscribing to Netflix where you live, when you travel to other countries you access the catalog of the place you are in by default.  That is why using a VPN to spoof your IP address to – US soil or Puerto Rico – instantly gives you a better choice of titles. Allowing you to feast your eyes on the extra content that country gets.

Netflix VPN Conclusion

Netflix offers a really diverse catalog of titles at a really good price. With that in mind, it is likely that Netflix is going to retain its position as one of the most important video streaming services in the world. As such, subscribing to Netflix in conjunction with a VPN service for gaining access to the US catalog version (from anywhere around the globe) is still a very good Netflix option for any movie lover.

We are sure that no matter what your reason for needing a Netflix VPN is, there is a brilliant option for everyone, on this list, that will provide everything you need. With trial periods available with any of the five Netflix VPN firms that we have featured in the article – you have a fantastic opportunity to try whichever service that piques your interest; risk-free.

Finally, apart from the benefits involved with a Netflix VPN, it is obvious that these days governments worldwide are passing more and more legislation for spying on their own citizens. Considering that rather depressing fact, we strongly recommend using a VPN every time that you connect the internet. Thereby giving yourself true anonymity – because encryption means digital privacy; something that we are passionate about!

Remember, Netflix may require the use of a particular US server or a specific set of settings, and these change from time to time. So if you can’t get connected straight away then talk to your chosen VPN’s support team to find out the details – rest assured that all the VPNs on this list – can and will unblock Netflix in 2016. Enjoy!

  1. .Ip Vanish no longer works with netflix. They are bastards. I pay for a service, then do work in Bosnia and they block me from getting what i pay for.

    1. Hi angry,

In fairness to all VPN providers blocked by Netflix – it it Netflix’s fault rather than there’s. I strongly recommend, however, that readers take advantage of any free trials and money back guarantees that are available, in order to test whether Netflix works before laying down real money. It is also worth noting that the situation is very changeable at the moment, so it is probably a good idea to buy short-term plans.

  2. Hi Ray,
A little while back your service suggested that ExpressVPN was the best one for use with Netflix. We live in a small city close to Seattle and I use a VPN for privacy, a little help with hack defense, ad-blocking and so forth. However ExpressVPN or PIA has NEVER worked with Netflix in our home network, even though I set it to Seattle, San Jose or LA (same time zone and best speeds).
I’ve tried 4 different browsers (Firefox, Opera, Chrome, IE) and logging in to Netflix is always problematic. It works only with Chrome, never works with a VPN, and worse, I have to enter User-name & Password 3 times, <> I login. Well, we are set up with Express for 15 months through your service and it works well everywhere except for Netflix. I am really getting frustrated with Netflix OOOPS-errors, and am hoping you may have some ideas about getting a little better experience with that login.
I do understand the never-ending battle between Netflix & VPNs and that things change back and forth. But in their price rise from $8.75 to $10, am feeling more in need of ideas. I’d really appreciate any light you can shed on Netflix login behaviors. 🙂
    Sincerely
    Pete
P.S. I did write to Netflix in snail-mail (no email for them) but doubt I’ll get response.

    1. Hi Pete,

I don’t know why you have had such problems with Netflix in general – seems very strange, and is something to take up with Netflix if you are paying for its service. As far as VAN-related problems are concerned – well, it seems that you are well aware of the situation. The only thing that I can say for certain is that I use AirVPN, and it works just fine with US Netflix…
