The Best Netflix VPNs to Unblock US Netflix – Proxy Block Fixed

Not every country gets the same Netflix catalog and the US has by far the largest Netflix library. Netflix restricts access to movies and TV shows using geo-restrictions, for copyright and licensing reasons.

Sadly, most VPNs don’t unblock Netflix anymore, but some do. We have reviewed over 150 VPNs in the last five years: keeping close watch of their Netflix USA unblocking capabilities.

These VPNs will let you watch American Netflix – no matter where you are!

In this article, you will find out everything about the world’s best Netflix VPNs. We will tell you how and why Netflix blocks VPNs, and why it is completely safe to unblock Netflix USThe time has come to unlock much more content on your Netflix…

What is a Netflix VPN?

A Netflix VPN is an online subscription service that allows you to pretend to be in a different country. By using the Virtual Private Network (VPN) to pretend to be in the US you can watch the entire US Netflix library. It doesn’t matter where you are, or where you purchased your subscription. With a VPN for Netflix your account automatically receives the extra content as if you were watching Netflix USA.

Is Netflix blocking VPNs?

Yes, Netflix bans unblocker or proxy services and blocks VPNs. Content producers and copyright holders constantly nag Netflix to stop geo-spoofing, this is why Netflix blocks VPNs. Netflix closely monitors IP addresses to see how many people are logging in.

When consumers unblock Netflix with a VPN server, there might be hundreds of people connecting from a single IP address. This is a dead giveaway that a VPN is being used – and is how Netflix detects VPNs (and blocks them).

So, what’s the solution? Read on to find out…

How can I avoid the Netflix proxy ban?

The only way to avoid the Netflix VPN ban is to use a VPN that knows how to stay one step ahead of Netflix. Most VPNs don’t have the funds or infrastructure to stay one step ahead.

The Netflix VPNs in this article make it their mission to provide access to Netflix USA. They work hard and have become experts at keeping their subscribers connected to US Netflix from all around the globe.

Is Using a VPN to Unblock Netflix Against the Law?

Consumers pay for their Netflix account, so they’re not actually stealing when they unblock US Netflix. However, if you live somewhere with strict copyright controls (that concern you) the VPNs in this article have strong privacy policies that promise not to keep usage logs

The Netflix terms of service (ToS) state that customers can be cut off for unblocking a different region’s catalog. However, in reality, this has never happened. You’re a paying customer. If Netflix cuts you off, it loses your subscription fee. For this reason, Netflix concentrates on blocking VPN IP addresses.

Why do some Netflix VPNs unblock Netflix and others don’t?

This is purely down to expertise, money, and willpower. Unblocking Netflix requires more effort than simply running a VPN. Not every VPN fully comprehends how Netflix detects VPNs. Most VPN providers don’t have the patience to go that extra mile for their subscribers. Some used to try – but found that they just didn’t have the expertise. The VPNs in this guide are seasoned pros that keep unblocking US Netflix: year after year.

  1. Justin Lawrence says:

How can this list be comprised of these? I mean, yes, Express does work with Netflix sometimes, however Cyber and Goose do not. I tried all the US servers with Cyber and still ran into the proxy error on Netflix’s page. Goose did not work for me either, I even contacted their customer support and they said that the service is not available at the moment. How are these the best, if half of them don’t work with Netflix?

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Justin,

We do try to keep up-to-date with these lists, but Neftflix blocking is a continually changing situation. We simply do not have the resources to check every VPN all the time, although we are working on developing a system with this aim. CyberGhost and GooseVPN worked when we last checked, but I will forward your comments to our team.

  2. Phil Underwood says:

Just purchased and installed Private VPN on my Mac. On trying to run it I get a message that its not compatible with 10.10.5 which I have. Cant see anywhere on the site that warns about that. I’ve just sent a message to them cancelling the subscription. What a waste of time and effort.

  3. Methew says:

I’m using HeadVPN service to unblock Netflix from abroad. It’s great ! try it!

  4. kingu3 says:

why torguard when you need a dedicated ip why not nordvpn

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi kingu3,

That is a very god point that got missed when updating this list. Thanks for noticing it. We have removed TorGuard. And yes, NordVPN works just fine for Netflix, but there is only room for 5 providers on this list :).

    2. iytty says:

did you mean good .you said god point ..exressvpn is the best and VPNArea is also good for netflix

  5. Jonatan says:

Express VPN Texas server used to work for US Netflix. Since the update only one US server is available and is blocked.

    1. kingu3 says:

      Express  still works

  6. Pd says:

So I live in mainland europe, but am from the UK, and want to use a VPN to access UK services such as iPlayer, which would also give me UK netflix. Is it possible to also have the same VPN to access US netflix and it’s bigger library as well? Or would I need to get 2 VPNs, one for each country, and switch between them? (I would probably prioritise UK and wouldn’t get 2 VPNs, just wanted to know if it was possible)

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Pd,

The same VPN will work – just change VPN servers to the correct country. Do be sure, though, to take advantage of any free trials or money back guarantees to check the VPN service isn’t being blocked by Netfix (or any other service you want to access).

  7. jester4jest says:

HMA does not work with Netflix but LiquidVPN and ExpressVPN both work

  8. Mona says:

As of today Windscribe works perfectly with US Netflix. Their addon for Chrome has a feature called Windflix that unblocks US catalog.

  9. MrX says:

You said “Some of the VPNs in this guide even allow people to rent their own permanent personal VPN IP address, which nobody else uses.”

Did I miss something? Because in the article above you said Express VPN does provide Dedicated IP addresses but not personal dedicated IP.

So is there a provider who provides Netflix Unblock and at the same time allows you to purchase a Personal Dedicated IP for you to use?

I have heard torguard does it but im not sure about it

    1. Ray Walsh says:

NordVPN rents dedicated IPs. I’ll update the article to make that clear. Yes, Torguard does rent dedicated IPs it is a pretty good VPN too! Please check their full review here at BestVPN to get a better idea of the VPN if you are interested. Otherwise, NordVPN will be the way to go!

    2. MrX says:

So If I say NordVPN vs TorGuard what do you suggest? Do you have a comparison for both of them? can you link me to it please.

Also I have another big question to ask about choosing the right VPN for me does this site have a forum section or something? or can I ask it here?

      1. Ray Walsh says:

Yes, you can ask anything you like here! Of course! /nordvpn-review/ /torguard-vpn-review/
I would personally go for Nord, but they really are both very good VPNs.

  10. Michael says:

I use NORDvpn. It does NOT allow me to watch JAPAN netflix from the US. They say they are working on it, and I know NETFLIX is trying to stop them.
Just a bit frustrated that I had it all set up and working so my wife could watch NETFLIX in her native language.
At least netflix could unlock the subtitles for all regions.
Trying alternatives now, but no luck so far.

  11. Hi says:

Why didn’t you mention PrivateVPN unblocks Netflix in Multiple countries
     Canada – Toronto
     UK – London 1
     France –

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Hi,

The summary in this article says “with servers in over 50 countries, including the US, PrivateVPN will unblock a lot of Netflix catalogs.”

  12. Michael says:

Will any of these VPN’s unblock BBC iplayer? I’ve been using AirVPN for the last few years without any issues, yet recently BBC blocked access to all of its UK servers

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Micheal,

Keeping up with this very fluid situation is hard. We are, however, working on a system to provide as much up-to-date information on VPNs and whether they work with key streaming services such as US Netflix and BBC iPlayer as possible. Mullvad worked fine with iPlayer when I reviewed it in July (and it has 3-hour free trial, so you can check for yourself).

  13. Alex says:

scam site trying to rip you off, ofcourse free VPNs exist

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Alex,

Yes, free VPNs exist (we have a page dedicated to them). But the honest ones are rather crap, and the rest are dangerous cowboys. Running a VPN costs a lot of money, so someone is going to have to pay for it somehow…

  14. Vinod Allman says:

I have ExpressVPN, and experienced the same results as Ann. I’m in the USA and, while my ExpressVPN was active, could not unblock outside of the US. Simply put, it detected the VPN and stopped the attempted connection. I’m happy for anyone who is able to unblock while using ExpressVPN, but I experienced the same as Ann, and I imagine that we’re not the only two people who experience these results.

  15. Ann says:

Express vpn does not work on Netflix

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Ann,

I tested ExpressVPN with US Netflix less than two weeks ago, and it worked fine with then. I did find that the New York server didn’t work, but all other US servers did. As a backup, ExpressVPN includes a smart DNS service with its subscription. Again, I found this works fine for Netflix.

  16. Robert says:

ExpressVPN for me was not good. It reduces my line speed by 50%.

  17. Daniel Stevens says:

I could not make Express vpn work either, however there is a new ish service called exavpn, it has worked perfectly for me

  18. jackson says:

  19. Amit says:

Express VPN not working for Netflix

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Amit,

Have you tried different US servers and also the Smart DNS service?

  20. Dimitry from VPNArea says:

Update 07 March 2017: VPNArea.com still WORKS with Netflix USA. No dedicated IP is required, just connect to one of our special NFLX servers with a regular VPNArea membership.

Quite soon we will have equally reliable UK solution too.

    1. Tom says:

Once enough people are using your advertised VPN, Netflix will realize it and block. The paradox of advertising for more VPN subscribers.

  21. Clara Me says:

Currently i can’t use ExpressVPN to view netflix T^T very disappointed

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Clara,

ExpressVPN does usually work for US Netflix, but it is a continual game of cat-and-mouse. I would suggest trying again, and if it still does not work, then try using ExpressVPN’s smart DNS service(fee to all customers) instead.

    2. iytty says:

expressvpn still works just connect Washington dc severs

  22. Richard says:

At the moment (25/2/2017) IPVanish can not unblock Netflix in US.

    1. Ray Walsh says:

Thanks for the heads up Richard. This has happened temporarily before but was resolved by the VPN. We have launched an investigation to see what the status of IPVanish’s ability to unblock Netflix is and will keep this article updated with any information we receive.

  23. meme says:

    Region unblocking IS NOT PIRACY!!!
Region locking has nothing to do with Australian law. AT ALL!

Q: Many Australians use a VPN to access Netflix in the US. Is it illegal for me to use a VPN to access Netflix?

The Copyright Act does not make it illegal to use a VPN to access overseas content.
While content providers often have in place international commercial arrangements to protect copyright in different countries or regions, which can result in ‘geoblocking’, circumventing this is not illegal under the Copyright Act.

    1. Ray Walsh says:

Hi there and thanks for your comment. While you may believe that unblocking geo-restricted content isn’t illegal you are in fact incorrect. Often I see it written on websites like Quora that it isn’t illegal to unblock geo-restricted content. However, the truth is different. The reason that Netflix can’t show the entire catalog in all zones is because of copyright restrictions placed on Netflix by content owners. Netflix wants to show all shows in all zones but it can’t because the shows are not licensed for certain zones. As such unblocking content is not only against the Netflix ToS but also against copyright laws. Admittedly, in Australia courts tend to be more lenient than say Japan. However, watching a copyright restricted show on Netflix is technically against the law and *could* get you in trouble. However, because Australian courts tend to decide that pirates should only have to pay for the actual amount of renting the movie and because subscribers who spoof to the US to watch shows on the fuller catalog have paid for their service: it is highly unlikely that Australian courts would punish Australians for breaking copyright. However, this is a national technicality that does not to apply to all nations. Finally, if you are using a VPN to spoof a US IP address and watch Netflix, why on earth would you want to do it on an insecure VPN, when you could do it on a secure VPN? And have peace of mind?

      1. Frank says:

        > While you may believe that unblocking geo-restricted content isn’t illegal you are in fact incorrect. Often I see it written on websites like Quora that it isn’t illegal to unblock geo-restricted content.

Did you even see what the linked site was? That is the official website of the Australian Prime Minister (who incidentally is a lawyer), not some random social media site. The Prime Minister has explicitly stated that in Australia, bypassing Netflix’s protection systems is legal. That is a very clear statement that would stand up in any court. It is not simply that they won’t prosecute, it is not illegal.

“unblocking content is … against copyright laws”
That part is wrong (in Australia). That’s a problem for Netflix, and that’s why they’ve had to add it to the ToS.
Using a VPN clearly violates the ToS. No question about that. But in Australia it’s not piracy.

        1. Douglas Crawford says:

          Hi Frank,

I have just discussed this with Ray, and we have failed to reach agreement. In my view you are correct – in most countries it not illegal to stream content from even pirate websites, let alone from a service that you have actually paid for. Netflix is prevented from showing its whole catalog because of its copyright agreements with content producers. That does _not_ mean a subscriber is breaking the law by circumventing that restriction.

No-one in any country has ever gone to jail for bypassing Netflix’s geoblocks. And I don’t think anyone has ever gone to jail even for streaming outright pirated content. Even in the UK, noted for its fairly draconian copyright laws, simply streaming even highly pirated content is probably not illegal.

That said, Ray is perhaps correct to err on the side of caution. Readers should certainly check the laws of their own country if they are worried about the issue. As he notes,

“If my article makes someone in the wrong country go to jail, i wont be best pleased that i didnt warn them – so its the minority that are most important in this situatiuon as they have something to lose.”

  24. random guy says:

NordVPN no longer works for US Netflix

    1. Ben Taylor says:

      Hi Random Guy,

I’ve just checked it and it works for me now. Occasionally a VPN server will get banned temporarily but all the providers we recommend are good at this “cat and mouse” game and the issue is only temporary 🙂

  25. Dimitry says:

I can confirm that Netflix works with VPNArea at the moment via the USA-0-NFLX server

  26. angry says:

.Ip Vanish no longer works with netflix. They are bastards. I pay for a service, then do work in Bosnia and they block me from getting what i pay for.

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi angry,

In fairness to all VPN providers blocked by Netflix – it it Netflix’s fault rather than there’s. I strongly recommend, however, that readers take advantage of any free trials and money back guarantees that are available, in order to test whether Netflix works before laying down real money. It is also worth noting that the situation is very changeable at the moment, so it is probably a good idea to buy short-term plans.

  27. Chris says:

Most Express VPN servers and VPNArea servers are blocked by Netflix as of July 25.

  28. Mike says:

None of the IPVanish servers I’ve tried work with Netflix. I get blocked every time.

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Mike,

We do try to keep this list up to date, but the situation is very fluid.

      1. lucy says:

SCAM ALERT !!!! none of the websites work and you know it well. You make money everytime idiots like us trust you and buy a subscription. shame on you !!!I will ask for a refund! And report to paypal !

        1. Douglas Crawford says:

          Hi lucy,

All these providers worked when this article was written in June. Unfortunately, this is cat-and-mouse game with a fast-changing landscape. I cannot speak for the other services, as I have not tested them recently, but ExpressVPN worked fine around three weeks ago.

  29. Peter Duryee says:

    Hi Ray,
A little while back your service suggested that ExpressVPN was the best one for use with Netflix. We live in a small city close to Seattle and I use a VPN for privacy, a little help with hack defense, ad-blocking and so forth. However ExpressVPN or PIA has NEVER worked with Netflix in our home network, even though I set it to Seattle, San Jose or LA (same time zone and best speeds).
I’ve tried 4 different browsers (Firefox, Opera, Chrome, IE) and logging in to Netflix is always problematic. It works only with Chrome, never works with a VPN, and worse, I have to enter User-name & Password 3 times, <> I login. Well, we are set up with Express for 15 months through your service and it works well everywhere except for Netflix. I am really getting frustrated with Netflix OOOPS-errors, and am hoping you may have some ideas about getting a little better experience with that login.
I do understand the never-ending battle between Netflix & VPNs and that things change back and forth. But in their price rise from $8.75 to $10, am feeling more in need of ideas. I’d really appreciate any light you can shed on Netflix login behaviors. 🙂
P.S. I did write to Netflix in snail-mail (no email for them) but doubt I’ll get response.

    1. Douglas Crawford says:

      Hi Pete,

I don’t know why you have had such problems with Netflix in general – seems very strange, and is something to take up with Netflix if you are paying for its service. As far as VAN-related problems are concerned – well, it seems that you are well aware of the situation. The only thing that I can say for certain is that I use AirVPN, and it works just fine with US Netflix…

    2. Martin says:

If you go to airvpn (dot) org/topic/23432-netflix/?hl=netflix – the guy says that AirVPN does not work with Netflix. His post is written on July 16. You however state on July 18 that AirVPN “works just fine.”

      So who’s right?

      1. Douglas Crawford says:

        Hi Martin,

It is true that AirVPN no longer works with Netflix. When I wrote that statement I had used AirVPN to watch Netflix recently and assumed it was still working. It seems I was in error.
