Stars from the adult entertainment industry have launched a new campaign – #PayForYourPorn, aimed at discouraging the widespread piracy of adult videos, which they claim is damaging the industry.

The campaign argues that ‘piracy kills quality porn,’ and that to pay for porn is only fair,

Purchasing content ensures it’s better produced, delivered in higher quality formats, more secure, and fosters the creation of new adult content. Porn piracy hurts everyone, from the creators behind the scenes to the porn stars fans love to watch. Everybody needs to make a living – theft only helps take away the ability of the tens of thousands of people in the adult industry.

Unsurprisingly, online porn is extremely popular, and in the US accounts for 36 percent of all internet traffic (jumping to 62 percent on mobile devices). The porn industry views the rise of free porn sharing websites with alarm, and when actor Samuel L Jackson described RedTube as one of the best pop culture achievements of the last 50 years, adult performers were furious. Porn actress Catalina Cruz even went so far as to call for a boycott of Jackson’s films, saying,

These sites are stealing whole members areas & have to potential to kill an industry.

Megan Wozniak, who works in the marketing department of Adult Empire, the primary publisher backing the #PayForYourPorn campaign, argues that the porn industry cannot expect help from the police or legal system,

‘Unfortunately, porn still has a stigma attached to it, so we know that we won’t ever receive help or support from legislatures, that’s why we decided to rally together this grassroots campaign on our own and spread the word.

While this may be true, the stigma cuts both ways, and as we have discussed before, downloaders of pornography are particularly likely to be targeted for legal action by copyright trolls.

David Kay from Porn.com thinks that the adult entertainment industry needs to adapt to the new realities of free streaming websites, either becoming more like NetFlix and charging a flat fee of less than $10 per month (rather than the ‘standard price’ of $39.95 that is commonly seen), or by profiting from a percentage of advertising revenue generated by free sites (which is what Porn.com does).
