Are you as excited as I am to play Battlefield 1?! Whether it’s Lawrence of Arabia, being able to ride a horse into combat, or the awesome-looking maps, Battlefield 1 is gearing up to be the can’t-miss game of 2016.

The game releases on EA’s Origin client worldwide on October 21st, although those who preordered the “Early Enlister Edition” can enjoy the game as early as October 18th.

There is, however, a way for anyone to start playing BF 1 a couple of hours before the game releases.

By tunneling into a country such as Australia or Japan, you can take advantage of time zones and release times. For example, if you live in the US, you can use a VPN to start playing the game up to five hours earlier (7 AM EST on October 21st)!

This method of using a VPN to play a game earlier has already worked for a number of games, with Fallout 4 being a notable example.

Before we get started, make sure that Origin is not currently running on your PC.

The process itself isn’t too complicated, but I have put together a step-by-step guide to help you get going as fast as possible. Keep scrolling!

Buy the game

Surprising, right? In order to play Battlefield 1, you will need to purchase the game! If you haven’t pre-ordered it yet you can grab it on Origin here, or check out some of the deals available on G2A.

Buying a digital version of the game on G2A might save you a few bucks (I was able to find a BF1 cd-key for $46.28) as opposed to buying directly from Origin (starting at $59.99).

Find a VPN

In order to be one of the first to play Battlefield 1 when it releases, you will need a VPN that has servers in countries such as Japan, Australia, or New Zealand. Connecting to these servers will allow you to connect to Origin from that location, allowing you to play earlier. You can read more about what exactly a VPN is and how it works here.

I’ve listed some recommended VPNs below, with these services offering the necessary locations as well as some free trial or money-back guarantee.

ExpressVPN comes heavily recommended with a great overall service and servers in Japan, Australia, and Hong Kong. There is also a 30-day money back guarantee in place for you to try out the service at no risk to your wallet.

VyprVPN is a solid VPN that has servers in Australia and Japan. There is also a 500 MB free trial available that is plenty for connecting to Origin’s Japanese or Australian servers.

NordVPN is another awesome VPN with an emphasis on encryption. There are also over 700 locations worldwide and a 30-day money back guarantee in place for you to try out the VPN.

Install and Connect

Once you’ve chosen one of the above VPNs, sign up and install the VPN client on your PC. After installation, boot up the client and take a look at the “server locations.” Here you will need to find and connect to a Japanese or Australian server.

I’ve included a screenshot using VyprVPN’s service on how to do this. Just choose the server from the list and hit connect!

Finish up and Play Battlefield 1!

So, you’ve signed up to a VPN, installed it, and connected to a relevant server. The only thing left to do is to start up Origin and verify that everything worked so far.

play battlefield 1

If you see the Battlefield 1 prices in AUD (Australian dollars) such as in the image above, congratulations! You are connected to Origin’s Australian servers and will have early access to Battlefield 1. If not, just select another server from the VPN (somewhere in Asia or Australia) and try again.

Once you are all ready to go with Origin, you can disconnect from the VPN server. Keep in mind that if you close Origin, you will have to repeat the steps above to access BF1 early.

This method for accessing video game titles before they are live in your region holds true for almost any game released today.

Taking advantage of a VPN and time zones is a slick way to get a headstart on your gaming friends. I hope this guide has been of some use, and I hope to see some of you on the battlefield!
