Taboo is a new BBC ONE/FX television series that is about to premiere to viewers on the UK’s BBC ONE. The TV show was created by Steven Knight with Tom Hardy and Chips Hardy (Tom’s father), and is receiving rave reviews from critics who have seen it in advance. With Tom Hardy starring, the new show is bound to attract interest from viewers around the world when it goes onto BBC iPlayer shortly after it airs. Sadly, because of geo-restrictions BBC iPlayer is only available to UK residents – but fear not! With a VPN for iPlayer, anybody can easily spoof their IP address to within the UK to watch Taboo online.

Taboo, which is set in 1814 during wartime, is an eight-part story that follows a character called James Keziah Delaney (Hardy) when he returns to London from living in Africa. The story unfolds as Hardy’s character inherits his father’s shipping business – a fading empire that he refuses to sell to the East India Trading Company. His refusal makes Delaney the target of some rather bitter new enemies and forces him to uncover some dark family secrets in a story that is full of treachery, betrayal, and murder.

Steven Knight and Tom Hardy

The series comes on the back of the success of Knight and Hardy’s work on the second season of Peaky Blinders and Knight’s captivating second feature, Locke. Steven Knight himself appears to be highly excited by the show, claiming that “there has never been anything like it.” The trailer certainly makes it seem highly mysterious, and it is clear that the style of the language that Hardy’s character uses was written specifically with him in mind – something that Knight freely admits was an inspiring part of the writing process:

“If you do anything with a really brilliant actor, like him, you know what he’s capable of, and you know where there’s no point in going in certain directions. With Taboo, knowing he was there and had this great cast around him, you could really, with the dialogue… It’s really enjoyable to have turn of phrase you wouldn’t have anyone else say. There can be so much going on inside his head that you know that’s going to be reflected on the screen. I think people are going to love it.”

“Brilliant” production team

Knight also speaks highly of the two directors, Kristoffer Nyholm and Anders Engström, who he says were ‘brilliant.’ Add to that Ridley Scott’s involvement as executive producer, and you see why Taboo is receiving so much interest. If the trailer is anything to go by, then it certainly seems that the team of people involved has created a massively spellbinding show with a great sense of mystery and suspense.

Exciting and Underrepresented Period

Knight has explained that he was drawn to the script not only because of Hardy’s involvement (which was obviously a draw) but also because of the subject matter. The 1800s is a time period that is substantially underrepresented in both film and TV. It is also a time when there was a great deal of espionage. With surveillance and spying such big talking points these days, the subject matter is highly contemporary, despite being from such an exciting long-gone period. This is another reason the show is likely to be such a great hit among viewers.

Add to that the involvement in the plot of the East India Company. Knight describes it as, “the biggest multinational conglomerate ever known in history. It ran whole countries, had its own military academies, schools […] it was this gigantic, ruthless, capitalist engine, that operated out of the UK, and America took it on.” Suddenly you start to get a real sense of what to expect from the show.

The story will revolve around Hardy’s hugely flawed character and will be a tale about whether he succeeds at taking on his father’s shipping empire – or fails. Knight has also made it clear that although only eight episodes have been made so far, it is not a mini-series – it is designed to be built on and continue – and as such this initial season could be the first of many more in the future.
