      CyberGhost Homepage
      • Special Offer: 77% off 1-year plan!

CyberGhost Pro is a good but not perfect VPN service. Its software is very easy-to-use while also being fully featured, and 5 simultaneous connections is good. Being based in Romania and keeping (almost) no logs is also a big draw, as is the superb connection speed results to nearby servers. CyberGost Pro undoubtedly has its flaws, but it also has enough cool features to make it a compelling choice for many.

        PrivateVPN Homepage

PrivateVPN is a Swedish based VPN that has a lot on offer. Security is strong, and subscribers get a lot of different encryption options. In addition, the firm provides an outstanding zero logs policy. The software is great and is available for all popular platforms. Finally, it has a good spread of server locations and connection speeds were pretty fast – and definitely good enough for streaming.

        PrivateInternetAccess Homepage

Private Internet Access is a well-established VPN that is both secure and private. It is a service that is often recommended because of its zero-logs policy. Customer care has improved significantly since last year: with wait times for responses arriving in less than half a day. It is based in the US, which might not be for everyone. This cheap VPN is perfect for privacy, but doesn’t unblock everything.

        qBittorrent FAQs

Which VPN is best for torrenting?

Above you’ll find the best qBittorrent VPNs, and unsurprisingly, the best torrent VPNs are the same. However, you should consistently check your torrent IP, to make sure your VPN is functioning as intended.

You can also keep reading to find out how to set up your VPN with qBittorrent.

Why do I need a VPN with qBittorrent?

As its name suggests, the qBittorrent client uses the BitTorrent protocol to download files. The protocol is a very efficient way of sharing and downloading large files and the fact that no centralized servers are required ensures that “torrenting” will continue to be a popular option for those that want to pirate copyright protected content.

Obviously, copyright holders are willing to do everything in their power to protect their content and this is where the BitTorrent protocol (and the qBittorrent client) can be something of a liability to its users.

The thing is, when you “download” a torrent file, you are sharing pieces of that file with everyone else that is also downloading or sharing the same file. A potentially nasty side effect of peer-to-peer technology is that all these “peers” can see your IP address (and you can see theirs).

        qBitTorrent Client

Here in qBittorrent, I can easily see the IP addresses of everyone else who is sharing the same file as me!

It should come as a surprise to nobody, then, that copyright holders routinely monitor P2P downloads of their intellectual property to catch “pirates.” To put it simply, using a VPN will protect you from this.

Using a VPN with qBittorrent will protect you

Is qBittorrent SafeUsing a VPN creates an encrypted connection between your computer and a VPN server run by a VPN provider. This VPN server then acts as a proxy, sitting between you and the internet.

For a full discussion on the benefits this provides, check out our VPNs for Beginners guide. With P2P, however, the key points are:

        • Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) cannot see what you get up to on the internet, as all data that passes between your computer and the VPN server is encrypted. This means that your ISP cannot see that you are torrenting, or indeed, what you are torrenting.
        • Anyone watching from the internet (such as copyright holders who monitor the IP addresses of torrent users downloading their content) will see the IP address of the VPN server, not your real IP address. In other words, using a VPN hides your real IP address.
        • By connecting to VPN servers located in countries that do not censor websites on copyright grounds, you can access torrent sites that are usually blocked to you.

In thisarticle, we discuss why you should always check that your chosen VPN provider permits torrenting, what to do if you get caught torrenting, how to verify that your VPN is protecting you while torrenting and more.

        Is qBittorrent safe?

Yes, qBittorrent is completely safe! Since qBittorrent is open-source, it allows users to check it, and its security to be validated and audited.

        How to use qBittorrent?

How To Use qBittorrentIf you have ever torrented before, you’ll feel right at home with qBittorrent. If you have never downloaded using the BitTorrent protocol, here is a quick rundown of how it works:

        1. Download and install qBittorrent. It’s 100% free!
        2. Ensure you have a VPN running (this is optional but strongly recommended). This will bypass monitoring of torrent sites, hide your IP from others you file-share with, and protect your downloads from your ISP.
        3. Visit a BitTorrent website. These websites host links to torrent files. You can browse for content that interests you, or search for something specific. Many websites include user-reviews of torrents, which can help you pick good ones. If your ISP blocks torrent sites, a VPN is also handy for unblocking them.
        4. When you have found the content you want, just click on the torrent link or magnet link. The torrent will open in your BitTorrent client and begin downloading.
        5. When the download is 100% completed, open and enjoy!

BitTorrent is a decentralized file-sharing platform. For it to work, users share files with other users. This happens while you download a file, but it is considered good form to leave your BitTorrent client open after you have finished downloading a file to benefit other users.

This is known as seeding and it is considered proper etiquette to seed to a ratio of at least 1:1 (that is upload for other users the same amount of data as you download).

qBittorrent displays the seed ratio of downloaded files.

How do you search on qBittorrent?

Searching from within qBittorrent is extremely simple. First, you have to make sure that Search Engine is ticked under the View setting drop-down. Once you’ve done that a Search tab will appear in your main window.

When you first set it up, you’ll need to install python and select the torrent sites you wish to search on. Once that’s done, you can use it as you would with any standard search engine, and quickly and easily find the torrent that you’re looking for.

        Best settings for qBittorrent

Best qBittorent SettingsIt is easy to protect yourself with a VPN when using qBittorrent. At the most basic level, all you need do is run the VPN software and connect to a VPN server before and during your qBittorrent session.

There is always a danger, however, that the VPN will disconnect in the middle of a download session. This occasionally happens with even the best VPN services. If you have left your computer unattended while downloading, this can result in your real IP address being exposed to copyright holders for perhaps even hours at a time.

Fortunately, there are solutions to this problem. Two of them, in fact!

        1. Use a VPN Kill Switch

More and more VPN providers now feature a VPN kill switch with their custom software. These either monitor your internet connection and shut it down when they detect a VPN dropout or use firewall rules to prevent any internet traffic leaving your computer outside of your VPN connection.

The second kind of kill switch is more secure and also doubles as DNS leak protection. But any kill switch is better than none. If your provider’s software doesn’t feature a kill switch, third-party options are available.

We have not yet seen a mobile app that features a kill switch per se, but the OpenVPN for Android app can be set up to work as a kill switch.

For more information on all of the above, please read our Complete Guide to IP Leaks.

        1. Bind qBittorrent to your VPN interface

One of the best features of qBittorrent is that you can you can bind it to your VPN interface. This prevents qBittorrent from downloading or uploading anything outside your VPN connection. This means that if your VPN connection drops (or you forget to turn it on), you will stay safe.

The instructions below are for Windows, but the process is very similar for Mac OS and Linux. They also assume that you are using OpenVPN because… well… why wouldn’t you?

        1. Ensure your VPN is running, then click Start and type cmd. Select Command Prompt and at the command prompt type: ipconfig/all. Look though the list of your internet adaptors until you see one that says “TAP-Windows Adapter.” Make a note of the adapter name this appears under. In the example below, it is “Ethernet.”

        Find your VPN Adapter Details

        2. Start qBittorrent and go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced. Under “Network Interface” select the name of the adapter you made a note of in Step 1. Restart qBittorrent.

        qBittorrent Network Interface Options

Torrents will now only download and upload when the VPN is running.

        qBittorrent VPN: Conclusion

qBittorrent is a fantastic BitTorrent client. To use it without fear of comeback from copyright holders, however, you should always use it in combination with a good, torrent-friendly qBittorent VPN service.
