Freedome Cost & Options

F-Secure Freedome has several subscription options. Unfortunately, all options except mobile require an entire one-year subscription. The plans and prices are based on how many devices you want to have connected at a time.

  • 3 devices – $49.99 one-time charge ($4.17/mo)
  • 5 devices – $59.99 one-time charge ($5.00/mo)
  • 7 devices – $79.99 one-time charge ($6.67/mo)

F-Secure Freedome Subscription Plans

A free five-day trial is available for new users. In addition, a 30-day-money-back guarantee is also included in all plans. Payment options are as follows:

  • Credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, & Discover)
  • PayPal
  • PayNearMe
  • Wire transfer
  • Check/Money order

In the past, you could purchase personal premium support for an additional $19.99. F-Secure Freedome must have discarded this add-on, as the only plans available are the ones listed above. This is to assume that personal premium support (chat, email, phone) is now available for all plans. If you find otherwise, please let us know in the comment section below!

F-Secure History

Founded in 1988 under the name Data Fellows, F-Secure was an early service option for users looking to add an extra layer of security to their digital worlds. Based in Finland – a country known for their privacy laws – F-Secure is an honorable provider for cyber security needs.

While this review centers primarily on their Freedome VPN product, F-Secure also offers a variety of other products including an anti-virus platform, a password manager, and additional internet security for all of your devices. Furthermore, F-Secure also offers free tools like an online PC scanner, Router Checker and AdBlocker.

F-Secure Freedome VPN offers roughly 30 different server locations, including Hong Kong, Australia, and the USA. This is perfect for those looking to access geo-restricted content or those simply looking to hide their IP address behind a virtual location.

Like many other VPN providers, Freedome VPN also offers multiple platform use, WiFi protection, and unlimited bandwidth. On the other hand, F-Secure Freedome VPN stands out from other providers with additional features like:

  • Blocking tracking attempts
  • Browsing protection
  • Interactive tracker mapper

F-Secure Freedome Tracker Mapper

Furthermore, as mentioned above, F-Secure is based in Finland: a country with very strict privacy laws. This is definitely an advantage over US based VPN providers, as F-Secure isn’t restricted by US jurisdiction or EU Data Retention laws.

Security & Privacy

Freedome VPN features the extremely secure OpenVPN protocol for Windows, Mac and Android devices and decent alternative IPsec for iOS devices. As for encryption, Freedome VPN provides:

  • Data encryption: AES-128
  • Data authentication: SHA-1
  • Handshaking: 2048-bit RSA

  • Data encryption: AES-128
  • Data authentication: SHA-1
  • Key exchange: AES-256

Adding onto their privacy highlights, F-Secure Freedome does not retain any personally-identifiable logs of users or their activities. As for torrenting, F-Secure Freedome can be hit or miss. The use of BitTorrent is restricted on many VPN gateways.

F-Secure's BitTorrent Policy

If you are detected by F-Secure’s software using P2P file sharing, your connection will automatically be blocked by a firewall. While the block is lifted after a few hours, this can still be annoying if you find yourself torrenting a lot.

So, in order to avoid hitting this block, do not torrent using any of the following gateways:

  • Australia
  • Belgium
  • Canada (Montreal & Vancouver)
  • France
  • Germany
  • Hong Kong
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Mexico
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Singapore
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

The Website

The F-Secure Freedome website is somewhat frustrating to navigate. While it appears user-friendly and futuristic, information on the VPN service can be difficult to find.

That being said, if you’re not a VPN user that needs to know every single technical detail, you probably won’t notice what’s initially missing. The prices and plans are listed right on the homepage, along with supported devices, included features, and a link to a blog-based FAQ.

The F-Secure Freedome website has also been updated since first posting this review. Instead of bold fonts and colors with unnoticeable download links, F-Secure now features easy-to-read titles and very noticeable download links.

F-Secure Freedome Website

Like many other websites, you can find F-Secure’s privacy policy and terms of service linked at the bottom of their homepage (or any other page). Furthermore, a link to their active community forum is also offered. Here you can access customer support, helpful tips and general discussion.

Other helpful homepage links include social media profiles, contact and support pages, and device setup guides.

Customer Support

F-Secure seems to have discarded its premium requirement to access live chat and phone support. In the eyes of the team, this is a huge step forward. Now you can access all support platforms, including live chat, phone, blog and the F-Secure community forum.

Taking it a step further, F-Secure offers service hours and phone numbers for specific countries. If you need immediate help, you can seek support based on the service hours/phone number they provide for your country.

F-Secure support country service hours

Trying out their new and improved support for myself, I did come to find that even during their US based service hours, their live chat is still currently unavailable. Their phone support, on the other hand, was very prompt and knowledgeable.

As for non-personal support, F-Secure’s blog is also very helpful. There’s a wide range of blog topics to browse for information and tips, in addition to setup guides and other how-to articles.

Setting up Freedome VPN on the Windows OS

To use the Freedome VPN five-day free trial, you simply have to click the download link on the F-Secure Freedome homepage based on your preferred platform. For Windows OS users, the .exe file immediately downloads when you click the link.

When your 5-day free trial is up, you are required to provide basic personal details like your first and last name, location, email, and payment information. Unfortunately, an anonymous payment method is not offered. Hopefully F-Secure will consider adding a cryptocurrency option in the future.

Using F-Secure Freedome VPN

Performance (Speed & Leak Tests)

I was extremely impressed when testing Freedome VPN speeds. Using the recommended US Southeast server, I connected with 55 MB protected traffic according to the Freedome VPN interface. During my own testing, I happily came in at 35.13 Mbps for download speed and 3.82 Mbps for upload speed.

Freedome VPN Speed Test

When testing with multiple servers in the past, Freedome VPN proved to be just as reliable. Overall, F-Secure offers generally high speeds with great performance and reliability. Furthermore, their server location list continues to expand as the years go on.

Fortunately, Freedome VPN offered up no disappointment when testing for DNS and IP leaks. To test your own Freedome VPN for leaks and speed, visit websites like,,, and/or

Other Platforms

F-Secure’s Freedome VPN client is available for Windows 7 or later, OS X 10.10 or later, iOS 9 or later, and Android 4.0.3 or later. Manual setup for Freedome VPN is not available; the VPN is limited to the client only.

Freedome VPN for Android

The setup for Freedome VPN’s Android app is just as user-friendly as the Windows client. Upon installation, you will be guided through a tutorial on how to use Freedome VPN and its features. Moving forward with Windows similarities, the Android app is visually similar to the Windows client as well.

Freedome VPN for Android

You can access the different features by swiping down on the main screen. Of course, you can turn Freedome VPN on/off by selecting the giant Protection ON/OFF button in the center of the main screen.

The Freedome VPN app for iOS is exactly the same as the app for Android; both in look, use and feature accessibility. In addition, separate subscription options are available for Android and iOS:

  • $29.99 annually
  • $5.99 monthly

We liked

  • User-friendly clients
  • Affordable pricing and free trial
  • No logs
  • Variety of useful security features
  • Robust DNS leak protection
  • Money-back guarantee
  • Personal support available for all users

We weren’t so sure about

  • No cryptocurrency payment option
  • Website can be difficult to navigate
  • Mandatory one-year subscription for PC users

We hated

  • Nothing

F-Secure Freedome VPN is a great choice for online security and protection. With a five-day free trial and a 30-day-money-back guarantee, you can try out the VPN with no strings attached!

In the future, we would like to see F-Secure add higher security to iOS devices, offer cryptocurrency as a payment method, and edit their website to offer more information upfront. If you decide to try out Freedome VPN, be sure to leave your user experience in the comment section below!

  1. Do you have VPN setup at router level instead of Desktop or Mobile level ? I would like to encrypt FireTV / FireStick traffic as well.

    1. Hi Roau,

May I first point out that you can instal a software VPN app on a Firestick or TV. ..

      1. Use a dedicated Fire Stick app
This considerably limits your choice of VPNs, but is undoubtedly the easiest option. Just search from Fire TV homepage. Note that most VPN providers who offer Android TV apps also offer Fire Stick apps.

      2. Sideload a regular VPN app using its .apk file
Most VPN providers will be happy to send you an .apk version of their software if you ask, or the .apk may be available through online repositories. Alternatively, you can download the latest .apk the excellent OpenVPN for Android app from F-Droid.

There are various ways to do sideload apps onto a Fire Stick, but we find using the Apps2Fire app to be the easiest. In fact, this rather funky app can install any app already installed on your regular Android device onto your Fire Stick without even the need for an .apk of the app!

Before sideloading an app onto your Fire Stick you must first enable third-party apps. To do this, simply go to the Fire TV homepage -> Settings -> Device -> Developer Options -> turn ON Apps from Unknown Sources.

If you still want to go the router route, setup details very much depend on the make and model of your router. We have instructions for setting up on a DD-WRT router here.

  2. Freedome is perhaps the best VPN to use if you need it for business purposes (working while travelling, connecting to client information etc.) as it comes from a very reputable cyber security company. Torrenting and stuff… well you can do it when you pick their server location right (Spain provides that if I recall right). Netflix: well F-Secure never really entered into the cat & mouse game with Netflix. They are more into just protecting your anonymity and data while you are on the internet.

    1. Hi mikko,

In general, yes. Using a VPN will protect you when torrenting, as long as the VPN provider permits this. Please see 5 Best VPNs for Torrenting for in-depth discussion on this subject. With F-Secure Freedome, use of BitTorrent is allowed on some servers but is automatically blocked on others, including the UK, Netherlands and Singapore.
