The $4.99 Basic plan comes with one device connection per any given session, while the $7.50 Premium plan permits three connections. Small business owners and medium- to large-sized familial or friend groups may opt for the $16.67 monthly Small Business Plan.

Features

SaferVPN is based in Israel. Server count stands at over 400, spread in 30 countries, including some relatively exotic VPN hosting markets such as East Asia, South America, or Australia. It’s always great to see a provider extending coverage in markets such as these with less web-infrastructure than in Europe and North America. Also worth noting? Its recent release of new servers in New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand, Hungary, Romania and Belgium.

Security & Privacy

SaferVPN allows users to choose which encryption protocol to use in any given session as balancing performance and security needs dictate.

We’d recommend you use the OpenVPN protocol when or wherever possible, as it provides the most security. However, you may always opt for PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, or IKEV2 – but remember the higher speeds are a result of less robust security measures.

OpenVPN runs on a robust 256 bit AES for the control channel. AES – 256bit for Data, SHA256 for Control Messages and 2048bit SSL/TLS Handshake Encryption.

SaferVPN Encryption Protocols

Unfortunately, SaferVPN keeps some connection logs, though users who are not primarily seeking to use a VPN to be as close to anonymous on the internet as possible may not mind this fact.

The Website

SaferVPN’s website strikes a fair balance between accessibility and aesthetic appeal, with links to Pricing, Support, or Features clearly shown on the top banner head, in addition to the downloads and blog section. In the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, a small chat-box pops up with a LiveChat support specialist offering answers to any potential questions you may have.

SaferVPN Website 829

SaferVPN’s media team have the usual social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn) you’d expect to find at any major company, as well a YouTube channel for instructional videos. SaferVPN also runs a useful blog filled with tips, service updates and industry news. The social accounts and blog both regularly add status updates, useful internal or external links, privacy news and instructional materials, making them a must-follow for SaferVPN customers.

Support

Since our last update, SaferVPN’s knowledge base continues to walk the line between applicable information for user and over-saturation to the point of being unhelpful. However, there were some positive changes made that we must give the provider credit for, such as the addition of illustrated setup guides for both desktop and mobile clients, as well as an OpenVPN walk-through.

SaferVPN-support

Support responses were quick and easy for simple questions. Agents typically had no problem answering queries or opening a support ticket on my behalf if the questions were too technical and needed redirection. Ticket responses were received within a few hours for simpler queries, while more technically involved questions took several days.

The Process

Signing Up

All you need to sign up for SaferVPN is a working email address and password. You can pay with Bitcoin for full anonymity, or by the other more conventional methods mentioned earlier this reivew. Afterwards, you can check your email for instructions on getting started, or head to the SaferVPN download area and make the selection that fits your platform or operating system.

The SaferVPN Review Windows VPN client

It isn’t always a straightforward process to translate thoughtful designs into a workable product, but SaferVPN Windows Client manages to do so on most counts. You pick what server to connect over using the left sidebar, using either the All Locations or Most Recommended category. You can save favorites for quick-connect in the future by tapping the star.

SaferVPN-win

The rest of the screen pictured shows your connection details and the server you’re using with a simple Connected or Disconnected message.

SaferVPN Client Protocols

You can change your protocol or contact support throughout the Settings Menu. Sadly, there’s still no dedicated killswitch in case your connection drops. It’s a shame – many providers have this as a standard feature and it’s understandably crucial for an effective VPN connection. That said, a killswitch patch is in the works, and SaferVPN partially makes up for the current lack of a killswitch by recently launching a new and improved version of their Windows app.

Performance (SaferVPN Speed, DNS, WebRTC and IPv6 Tests)

Speeds were quite good, if not entirely remarkable. Testing was done on a 30 Mbps baseline over OpenVPN with UK servers above 12 Mbps and Dutch servers averaging in the 14 Mbps range, which is more than adequate for high-definition streaming or P2P downloading purposes.

SaferVPN_Download

SaferVPN_upload.
Graphs show highest, lowest and average speeds for each server and location. See our full speed test explanation for more detail.

Best of all, US servers were almost at the same clip as the test connection without using the VPN. It’s commendable and noteworthy as geographical proximity is usually the number one factor after speed loss.

It was more pleasing to see no DNS leaks other than the WebRTC Bug, though most providers haven’t accounted for that on their end. Despite this attitude being pervasive, we’d like to see patches implemented. In the meantime, here’s a five-minute way to plug the leak on your own.

DNS leaks – on the whole – came back okay, but the WebRTC Bug is unfortunately still unpatched, but you can easily take care of this problem yourself by following the instructions in our post here. You can check for IP leakage using ipleak.net or for IPv6 leakage testipv6.com. It’s good to do so occasionally as a safeguarding habit, if nothing else.

Other Platforms

In addition to the Windows client above, SaferVPN has mirrored clients for Mac, iOS, and Android (with the Mac App also recently receiving a refresher like that of Windows). The Mac client does exactly what its Windows twin does (though it also lacks a killswitch). Regardless, it’s nice to see the same level of attention given to all of the platforms.

SaferVPN-mac

The dedicated Android client didn’t allow for protocol selection in our last review. It’s since been taken care of. Speeds were slightly slower than desktop testing, but that is expected on mobile platforms.

The SaferVPN Chrome Extension

There’s also a brand new SaferVPN Chrome extension which looks and feels like the other clients, but even more modern and seamless with its UI. Moreover, you can choose from any of the server locations in every other iteration of the SaferVPN App in the browser version.

SaferVPN Chrome Extension

The best thing about the SaferVPN Chrome extension? As of summer 2016 it is now available for free. As such, any user will be able to enjoy 500 MB of free service per month, with unlimited monthly data being available with a paid subscription.

SaferVPN Chrome Extension Locations

The SaferVPN App will migrate to other web browsers in the future, according to recent comments from the design team. Speeds were similar to the desktop client, if not a little faster. Something else worth nothing: Any traffic outside your browser isn’t encrypted while using the browser-based solution, so watch out for mobile apps or downloading P2P or other software.

SaferVPN Review Conclusion

I liked

  • Compatible client
  • Performance
  • Minimal data collection
  • Useful website
  • Multiple support options
  • Free Google Chrome VPN extension
  • Newly refurbished and released Windows and Apple Apps

I wasn’t so sure about

  • Lack of user forum
  • Connection logs kept
  • Highly technical questions take a while to be answered

I hated

  • Nothing

Although SaferVPN is by no means a perfect provider (a nonexistent killswitch being the most glaring problem), it’s still a great choice. The client performs well across multiple platforms, and the browser extensions are also topnotch. The payment options allow for a high degree of anonymity to start with, and the personal data you have to proffer up is minimal. Not to mention it still works with Netflix. unlike some other VPNs! 1. I never write comments unless it is something extremely amazing or horrendously terrible.
SaferVPN is a great product, won’t change my life to any extreme, just a great product.

The reason I chose to comment is the question about the origin of the company.
It seems that all the “saints” out there, would like to avoid using Israeli products or merchandise because of the atrocities committed.

If that is the case, please let me help you, from now on stop using:
    – Ivy Bridge processor so any computers running the Windows XT operating system must be turned off immediately
    – Anti-virus software and personal firewalls must be removed as this technology originated in Israel
    – Discard all mobile phones, as this technology was developed in Israel, where the first mobile phones were manufactured.
    – Do not use Video On Demand (VOD) to watch movies as you may inadvertently see an advert displayed using Israeli software
    – Do not buy an electric car as it is likely to be powered by an Israeli battery or use Israeli-developed charging mats.
    – cherry tomatoes are now considered banned
    – Destroy all personal medication. Israel’s Teva Pharmaceuticals, the largest generic drugs company in the world, will have manufactured many of your medicines. Staff with the following illnesses will need to take specific precautions.
    – Cancer – do not take any form of medication or treatment. Israeli scientists have been working at the forefront of oncology for decades.
    – AIDS and HIV – beware; researchers at Israel’s Weizmann Institute or Hebrew University developed or improved AZT and Hypericin-based drugs; they have also developed a treatment that destroys HIV-infected cells without damaging healthy ones.
    – Diabetes – do not measure or inject Insulin using the devices developed by Israeli scientists.
    – Multiple Sclerosis – stop taking Copaxone, one of the most efficient medicines and the only non-interferon agent, as Teva developed it. Don’t touch Laquinimod either.
    – Parkinson’s – remove the Israel-pioneered brain pacemaker to stop tremors.
    – Myeloma – stop taking the drug Velcade, which was developed over a period of 30 years by scientists in Haifa Israel.
    – Skin allergies must be treated with steroid creams only, as the new safer non-steroid alternative is Israeli.

O yeah, stop watching movies from Hollywood, 11 of the major movie studios are owned by Jews who support israel..
So basically step away from the computer, throw away all your medicines, do not buy fruits or vegetables, break your phone and destroy your TV. maybe then
The list goes on and on…

So stop pretending like you care, stop trying to get involved in something you know nothing about and please let Israelis do what they do best, make the world a better place.

That being said, SaferVPN like many other Israeli Innovations was created to better YOUR lives. if you don’t like it or don’t agree with the Israeli way, go back to your caves and enjoy playing with sticks and stones.
They will continue to do their thing…

  2. I am not affiliated with safer, though have a lifetime subscription with them.
The vpn works fine with openvpn on linux – I don’t use client software as it’s closed source.
Speeds are fast, support I’ve found to be very good – a different story to that above.
The logging is worrisome, I wish they would stop that. Reassured that they share ip (basic privacy measure) and although they don’t enjoy my absolute trust, I’m generally happy with what I paid for and would recommend.
