IPVanish Pricing & Plans

IPVanish has one service plan, but offers different subscription periods. So you can pay for the service monthly, get a subscription for three months, or sign up for a year. The prices work out cheaper per month if you take out a longer subscription. However, you have to pay for the whole period up front.

IPVanish prices

The purchase process sets up a repeat billing agreement, so when your chosen subscription period ends, it will be recharged automatically for continued service. So, if you signed up for one month, because you only wanted the service for one month, you have to remember to cancel the service before that subscription expires.

All accounts get a seven-day refund guarantee, even the one-month subscriptions. However, that refund period only applies to your first month, so if the repeat billing agreement rolls on and charges you for another month, there is no refund possible for that second month.

IPVanish accepts a lot of different payment types, not just credit cards. You can pay with your PayPal account, but unfortunately, the company no longer accepts Bitcoin.

IPVanish Security

The IPVanish app has some extra security features, which you will find particularly useful on mobile devices. You can choose to activate a network block, which will prevent the apps on your device from connecting to the internet without your VPN being turned on. You don’t have to worry about extra charges for data usage because the IPVansh service includes unlimited data throughput. As such, you should probably leave the VPN turned on all the time.

When you walk out of the house with your laptop or mobile device, you will move out of range of your home router. However, you will pass through the signal footprint of other routers and your device will try to connect. The network block of IPVanish freezes out the network card until the VPN can establish its own connection. This means that you will be protected against connections to unsafe open networks that have no password requirements, which is a method that hackers sometimes use to sneak malware onto mobile devices.

IPVanish Encryption

AES is an encryption methodology that was commissioned by the government of the USA. The motivation for the creation of this security method was that the government worried that no existing encryption system was secure enough. AES is used by all US government departments to protect their communications over the internet. Other governments around the world also use AES because it is seen as the most secure encryption system available.

Privacy advocates worry that any encryption system that is promoted by the US government probably has a back door to allow US security agencies to read all messages encrypted by it. Despite this, AES is the most widely-used encryption system used for VPNs. IPVanish uses a 256-bit key, which is the strongest security available.

BestVPN.com recommends OpenVPN above all VPN methodologies and we particularly like OpenVPN systems that use AES encryption with a 256-bit key. This is the main reason why IPVanish regularly appears in our lists of recommended VPN services.

One problem with AES is that the same key encrypts and decrypts messages, so that key has to be sent over the internet in order to coordinate encryption. Therefore, a second encryption system is necessary in order to protect the passage of that key from snoopers.

OpenVPN uses a system called Transport Layer Security to protect the administration messages of the secure connection — including the transmission of the AES key. This “control channel” uses the RSA encryption cipher. RSA uses two different keys for encryption and decryption and you can’t work out the decryption key if you know the encryption key. This type of cipher is termed “asymmetrical encryption.” The encryption key can be publicized, so it is called a public key. The longer the key, the safer the encryption. RSA typically uses key of 1024, 2048 and 4096 bits in length. RSA with a 1024 -bit key is not secure. Most VPNs use a 2048-bit key and IPVanish is in this division. The very best VPNs use 4098-bit keys for RSA to future-proof their security methods.

IPVanish Privacy

The US base of IPVanish could be a problem. American companies are vulnerable to pressure from the NSA and other law enforcement agencies. Copyright lawyers are also very active in the USA and there is even a law against file sharing in the country. That means you could actually be convicted and sent to prison for conspiracy to commit copyright infringement under the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act.

These factors should discourage those who want to download files with P2P networks from using IPVanish to protect their identities. However, the logging policy of the company should make that activity safe. The company declares that it keeps no logs at all, so if the NSA turned up with a court order for records of the connections of IPVanish’s customers, it could only walk away with an empty disk. This policy gives IPVanish the confidence to advertise its services for P2P activities.

The Website

IPVanish has invested a lot in its service, and the high-quality that money bought is manifested in the company’s website. The top stripe of the site gives access to the main pages of the website. This menu is fixed in place in the window, so it remains visible as you scroll down each page.

IPVanish Review

At the bottom of each page you will encounter a footer section, which includes links to more information about IPVanish’s services.

IPVanish site footer

You can get to the IPVanish blog from the footer. This is probably the most comprehensive blogs in the industry and it is added to with posts almost daily. Topics focus on internet privacy issues and articles about VPNs.

IPVanish Support

The support department of IPVanish lets down the brand a little. It is surprising that that company didn’t spend a little more on its help desk given all of the investment that it has put into all other aspects of the VPN service.

The main support conduit of the site is its FAQ page.

IPVanish FAQ

The FAQ page is searchable and it heads the section of the IPVanish site that is dedicated to the Support Center. You can see other support categories by scrolling down in the FAQ page.

IPVanish support categories

You will need to get to the Setup Guides once you subscribe to the service.

If you can’t find a solution to your problem, you can fill in the contact form to ask a question of the support team. This is accessible through a link in the FAQ page, and also there is a link in the site footer to the contact form.

You will get a reply to your query via email. It can often take more than a day for the Customer Support team to respond to queries.

The Process

Signing Up

Your starting point for signing up to IPVanish is the Pricing page. You get to this page through the main menu of the site, or by pressing on one of the “Start Now” buttons on the Home page of the site or beneath the description of the plan term that you want to take out.

The sign up form doesn’t require much information. Just an email address and a password. The email address has to be valid and one to which you have access. However, you don’t have to give your regular email address because you could just set up a free webmail account in order to communicate with IPVanish.

The IPVanish Windows VPN client

The app’s installer will put a shortcut for IPVanish on your Desktop. Click on this to get the app running.

IPVanish shortcut

The first time you open the app you need to enter your username and password. The log screen remembers these details, so you won’t have to type them in on subsequent visits.

IPVanish app login

The most important fields in the main screen of the app are three server location selectors in the bottom right of the window, just above the connect button.

IPVanish app

These fields all lead to drop-down lists. They enable you to select a country, then a city and then a specific server. You get another view of the available servers over on the Server List page.

IPVanish app server list

You can re-order this list according to response time, or load, as well as having them in alphabetical order. If you click on the star symbol next to a server location, you mark it as a favorite. Then you can get the app to just list those servers that you have marked.

The Settings section of the app is divided into four pages, which you access through tabs. These pages give access to some important security features.

IPVanish app settings

On the first page of the Settings section, you get to decide whether the VPN should start up with the operating system and which server the app should connect to by default.

Settings on the Connection tab dictate how the app will behave once it is running.

IPVanish app connection settings

The all-important kill switch will prevent other apps on your computer from connecting over the internet if the VPN is not engaged. This situation can happen if the internet connection drops briefly. When the connection returns, apps that are still retrying to continue their communications will send out messages without the cover of the VPN. The kill switch makes sure the VPN connection gets established first.

The “Block LAN traffic” option acts as automatic WiFi protection. This will prevent your laptop from connecting to open WiFi hotspots without your knowledge. The “Auto Reconnect” feature means that you don’t have to keep checking whether the VPN is still connected, because the app will re-establish its link to the VPN server, should the connection drop briefly. The obfuscation checkbox further down the page will add an extra layer of security to your communications. It scrambles up the contents of each data packet that passes between your computer and the VPN server. This is an important step if you intend to use the VPN in China. However, it will slow down your connection, so don’t use it unless you really need to.

The “Active Protocol” field enables you to nominate which VPN methodology the app should use.

IPVanish app connection settings

This is a great feature because usually VPN apps don’t include L2TP or PPTP. Instead, these are often available only for manual set up. Although it is possible to change the protocol that the app uses, you are better off sticking with OpenVPN. The option to select either TCP or UDP is also very useful. UDP is the User Datagram Protocol. It is a lightweight transport system and is preferred by real-time applications, such as IP telephony or video streaming. This is probably your best VPN option.

The IP Settings tab has a couple of features that would better to ignore.

IPVanish app IP settings

The IP switcher option at the top of the screen will allocate you a different IP address from the VPN server periodically. You get to specify how often the address should change. Although this is a clever security feature, it takes a little time to allocate a new IP address and when this change is occurring, you will find that the internet stops working. If you are in the middle of watching a streaming movie or playing a game online, you will find this temporary loss of internet access annoying.

Further down the page, you will see the option to change the DNS server used for connections when the VPN is connected. The DNS server translates between web addresses and IP addresses. This is because the URLs that you enter into your browser to get a web page are meaningless to the routers on the internet.

Some privacy specialists mistrust DNS services and like to research a specific DNS server and stick with it. However, it is better to rely on the VPN’s own DNS servers because each server location uses a nearby DNS service. One telltale sign that you are using a VPN is when the DNS server used by your computer is in a different country to your reported location. This can alert proxy detection systems and get you locked out of location-restricted sites.

IPvanish Performance (Speed, DNS, WebRTC and IPv6 Tests)

The page VPN Speed Testing Done Right has a full explanation of our new scientific speed test system. Following these guidelines, you can see how IPVanish’s speeds compare to its competitors.

IPVanish claims to be the fastest VPN in the industry, and our speed test show that this claim is valid.

The DNS lookup time can slow down the process of fetching a page from a web server. IPVanish doesn’t do too well in this respect.

IPVanish DNS lookup times

However, IPVanish’s connection times put it in the top rank of VPNs.

IPVanish connection time comparison

Overall, IPVanish scores very well in these tests and claims the crown of the fastest VPN on the planet.

I connected to one of the IPVanish London VPN servers from the Dominican Republic. The website IPLocation.net references five location databases to report on the actual location of an IP address. Two of these databases identified the server’s location as Rugby. Two others had the IP addresses registered in the United Kingdom, but couldn’t pinpoint a country. The fifth database had the real-world address of the UK server I chose as actually being in the Netherlands. None of the location databases placed the IP address in London.

The test site ipleak.net reported my location as in the Netherlands. This showed that the VPN had successfully cloaked my real location, which was in the Dominican Republic. Appearing to be in the wrong country would make it impossible for me to get into location-restricted websites. A report on the DNS servers accessed by my computer identified just one, which was located in the Netherlands.

Another test site, doileak.com placed me in the United Kingdom and also saw that the one DNS server that my computer accessed was in the UK.

My internet service provider does not use IPv6 addresses and so I was unable to test for IPv6 leaks.

Streaming Services

While connected to an IPVanish server in London, I accessed UK video streaming services from the Dominican Republic. These sites do not allow cross-border access, and they also block users of VPNs, if they detect them — this is called “proxy” detection.

The proxy detection systems of Netflix UK and the BBC iPlayer spotted the VPN and refused to allow me to watch videos. The location checks of ITV and Channel 4 are not quite as thorough and both of those sites let me watch videos.

I next tried location-restricted sites in the USA, connecting through an IPVanish server in Miami. IPVanish performed better with Netflix USA than it did with the UK version of the service and I was allowed to watch videos. ABC spotted the VPN and so I was blocked. Both NBC and CBS let me watch.

Other Platforms

The apps of IPVanish work well on all of the major operating systems.

IPVanish operating systems

Although the graphic above doesn’t list it, the macOS system is catered for. However, macOS computers and iOS versions later than release 10 don’t have access to PPTP.

You can also install the VPN on flashed routers and set-top boxes.

IPVanish Review Conclusion

IPVanish is one of the top VPN services around and its prices are very reasonable. You get the choice of a large number of server locations and a lot of extra security features, such as a kill switch and a network block. IPVanish has created a very nice app, which is easy to use and installs itself. You don’t need any specialist technical knowledge in order to use this system.

I liked

  • Seven-day money-back guarantee
  • Servers in 60 countries
  • P2P allowed
  • No logs
  • Allowance of five simultaneous connections
  • Easy-to-use app for Windows
  • Kill switch
  • Super-fast speeds

I wasn’t so sure about

  • Slow customer support responses

I hated

  • Can’t get into BBC iPlayer or ABC

It is a shame that the VPN can’t slip by the proxy detection systems of Netflix UK or the BBC iPlayer. However, if you have a Netflix account, IPVanish can get you into the US version of the system even if you signed up for Netflix in the UK.

IPVanish has extra security for customers in locations such as China and the Middle East. The service offer excellent protection for P2P downloading, internet telephony apps, online gaming, and access to geo-restricted websites.

great speed but the software that you have to use is a joke, it works onces in the while half the time can not connect to any servers, i have to remove the software and reinstall it, and this system is fresh install of windows 7 so i do not know why the software is a pain. makes me want to just cancel this and forget

  2. András Erdős :

    Terrible service and customer service.
Two month into the contract they could not provide to watch foreign TV anymore.
No notice, no solution, no refund, but the rudest customer service ever .
At one point they just stop answering you.

Do not even think to subscribe!!!!

  3. Collection Smart Review :

Many of these services will perform ok in a test environment. For long-term use many will fail like IPVanish. I experienced frequent drops during the most critical time when you need protection and to keep your PC cloaked for protection. A lot of fluff from these guys but the service is truly subpar.

  4. Lawrence :

4 Years a client. Never had any major issues. Recently took advantage of a sweet lifetime offer. At the price I was offered, I couldn’t turn it down. Highly recommend. This is the perfect solution for basic VPN requirements. Can’t recommend this company enough.

  5. Rudy Taylor :

Haven’t even got it yet, but after the above reviews I am a little concerned, and may go another service.

  6. mark gerlach :

IPVanish Hasn’t worked for BBC iplayer for over a month on any of their UK servers…you might need to revisit your review.

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi mark,

iPlayer availability is an ever-changing situation, which makes it hard to keep up with all the time for all VPNs. We are currently working, however, on developing a system to ensure we are always up-to-date (at least for the big-name VPN providers which includes IPVanish).

  8. Alex :

IPVanish is terrible. Unfortunately, it is absolutely useless in any country you might really want it (China, Oman, UAE, etc.). Basically, any country with restrictions has blocked IPVanish, rendering it completely useless. I’ve been in touch with their support teams for months and no one has been able to come up with a solution. I asked for a refund but was told that was impossible. This is literally the worst VPN I have tried so far. Not recommended in the slightest.

  9. Matthew Lloyd :

I had a terrible experience with IPVanish. I canceled after 2 months because the service was too slow and I was unable to use it for the purpose I bought it. They stopped collecting payments and everything seemed fine. Two years later, a mysterious $10/month charge started appearing on my bank statement, from PayPal but with no label indicating it was IPVanish. It took several calls to PayPal to finally figure out I was being charged by IPVanish. It took me a long time to notice this wasn’t one of my legitimate subscriptions and I ended up being overcharged $240. I didn’t use the service at all during that time. They refused to refund any of the money. I am now taking them to small claims court. BUYER BEWARE.

IPvanish the only thing that vanishes is your internet connection, the worse internet service ever. I pay the entire year. please don´t use it.

  12. tom :

I had bought IPvanish because I had read that my netgear router was supported …. which after signing up and going to the support page my model was not so I asked for a refund that night …and within 24 hours all my payment was returned to paypal … they are honest

  13. Vince :

I use IPV for nearly 1 year and can only affirm that I also had my load of misery with their low quality to non existant customer service…

Ex: having a series of connection and PW issues I explained and asked a few questions.
    1. a certain person A. would answer and asking in a concerned way for more details!
So greatfull to be heard and taken seriously I gave my best to answer all the required details..
    2. The response came 2-3 days later but written by a new and concerned person B. who would ask me to be more precise and asking me the same questions again which I had just painstakingly responded….
    – So I did answer them all again
    3. So that 2, 3 days later an answer came written by a concerned but again different person C. asking me … Yeah!!

Right you guess it The Same again .. A NutsHouse!

On another occasion one of my IPV app wasn’t running for a week, but I patiently took care to document with details and screenshots that issue (being used to it..)

And someone actualy polite and concerned… 😯 …
answered to my request with an exact 1to1 copy of my just send mail..
Adding something like :”I hope we could help you, please don’t hesitate to contact us for any further support.

    I then wrote them back
Thank you IPVanish…but can it be that I contacted by mistake IPV Kindergarten department!!!?”
    “Is Anybody Home.. Helloo!!”

I never got an answer of cause and gave it up.

If it weren’t such an important subject it would be actually funny!

For a while I really had the feeling their customer service was either non existent or run by a bunch of disoriented people.

After a while I guess one simply give up asking any questions… Which I did.

As one reviewer wrote correctly its better to learn and find the answers oneself !
For which reason I appreciate now “bestvpn” every time a bit more.

    – About the IPV presentation above , there are some changes or errors I noticed with their Android App.

I use 2 times IPV. Android App
    1 on my mobile and
1 on my AFTV + with Kodi.

Contrary to what they wrote above about Android functions being identical to Windows..

    The Android app.doesnt:
    – enable killswitch*
    – enable DNS leak prevention
    – enable IPV6 leak prevention,

May be there was !,..but not anymore on Android Apps.

as it happens relatively often that my VPN connection stopped with my mobile and I often noticed it too late
    :-/ pretty bad that !

I also noticed that sometimes Server location databases show different places then the city but it doesnt appear to be of any concern.

    It’s not all negative thought
as speed has always be pretty Good for Kodi streaming.

And they have a strong discretion politics, Bc, both O logs policy which I trust.

We’ll it seem to me that everything is possible with IPV
… The Best and the Worth ..

But lets face it ..for a pretty low yearly rate,
    , IPVanish,
All in All finally does the job!

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi teddy,

Are you talking about websites that try to block VPN users (such as Netflix), or something else?

  18. teddy :

i have ipvanish and i get blocked out of many searches am i doing something wrong

  19. Matt :

I use IPvanish as a service for the last 18 months or so. However when connecting to the UK servers I see that are hosted by M247 Ltd.

This raises concerns regarding the new UK law and data logging. How does IPVANISH get around this given that the servers are located in the U.K. and not owned by themselves but by M247 Ltd?

Do you have any insight into this at all please?

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Matt,

Please see my article on 5 Best No Logs VPNs for a discussion on the dangers posed by third-party server centers. TL:DR – server location or whether it is run by a third party provider matters less than where the VPN company is based, as long as bare-metal servers with full-disk encryption and shared IPs are used (which I assume is the case with IPVanish). That said, unless you need to use a UK server for watching iPlayer or similar, I think it safest to avoid… just in case.

    Good price
    Excellent quality
So far I have had no problems

How is it supposed to be super fast when I choose a server near me. Speeds from 180mbps to 18mbps? My 4gLte is faster than this. Don’t think 90% speed decrease is worth it.

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi AnonO,

Most VPNs (including IPVansh) use shared IPs. In fact, this is the most basic way in which a VPN provides privacy for its users. When using shared IPs, your speeds will average out with every other person sharing the same IP address. A 180 Mbps is very fast, so you will not get anywhere near full speeds when running a VPN. That said, 18 Mbps seems very low. As you can see above, Ray got around 40 Mbps download speeds on his 50 Mbps connection.

I use IPVanish with a 50Mb connection and I can reach speeds of 45Mb. Is an excellent VPN, they are to be congratulated! (Sorry for my English – Google Translate!)

  22. Tyler :

I used IP Vanish for most of 2016, and it is a very good VPN. I liked it much more than ExpressVPN. The Windows & iOS app, and my OS X is great. I used it on all 3 devces.

It is US based but it is fast. You can pick fast servers, and you can connect to anything. NETFLIX is known to not be able to allow any VPN, so that’s no surprise there, you cannot use TunnelBear, ExpressVPN, NORD or anything with Netflix in the USA, so not being able to use IPVanish either is really no big deal. Just disconnect and watch Netflix. It’s secure so it shouldn’t matter. Watching Kodi on the other hand, allows VPNs perfectly fine…

Someone also mentioned getting your money back if you decide not to use their service, this is also inaccurate. In Jan 2017 I auto-bought a year, but since I changed VPN I needed to get a refund, I was refunded the difference of the time frame I did not use within 3 business days. They are very willing and helpful with refunds.

I have had zero issues with IPVanish, their support is responsive and decent, not awesome but it’s better than no chat-box support. They will help you figure stuff out, they speak English because they are USA based (unlike ExpressVPN) and they have good connections. I always felt secure using IPVanish.

  23. Stephen :

Hi I installed IPvanish yesterday, had a little trouble with the unsigned TAP drivers on Windows 10 not being digitally signed, up and running within 20 minutes, seems pretty good so far.

  24. Alexey :

IPVanish is okay and reliable service compared to some others, sometimes is a slow support however some things you need to try resolve yourself, they have thousands of clients sometimes u have to wait to get the answer. I see people complain on software, i never had any problems with it. Also that you cant get refunds, well this is a joke. Simply call your bank you will get money whatever the reason, do chargeback on paypal same thing! This is serious and big company you think they will steal someone mine or yours $70-$80 or $10-$20.
If you come to this site and read review from professionals that service is good then go try it! dont rely and read comments too much.. you should all understand that many comments are fake or posted by competition both negative and positive. Sometimes people heard about VPN working for netflix, but dont even know to install VPN, or will encounter some other problem which they can simply resolve if try.. but no, then they will complain how company software is bad..etc

  25. VLH :

Holy God, IPVanish is a nightmare!
After repeated complete uninstalls and clean reinstalls, it continues to kick itself out of service, and simply will not complete a reinstall at this point on my Mac/El Capitan.
I’ve received the same support message 4 times asking for screen shots of my manual installation settings. Every time I supply it, I get the same request for it from another support tech, a few days later; albeit it took 3 days to get a response more than once.
A service which advertises 24/7 support, which doesn’t provide it, is a fraud. A service which advertises support, but blows customers off with a pretense of support, is a fraud. IPVanish is a fraud, period!

  26. ProfZimm :

This service works great for me and as far as billing issues? First off I protect myself by using throw away cards like a pre loaded card from say WalMart. Seriously why would anyone with any common sense use a personal credit or debit card. Go get a throw away card, load approximately $80-$100 on it as it only costs $3 to load it. Use that card then don’t reload it after the money is spent. Don’t complain about the $3 because if you can afford to throw $70+ per year on a VPN then you can afford it.

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi ProfZimm,

Using “anonymous” payment methods does have some privacy advantages, but it is always worth remembering that your VPN is always know who you are via your IP address (unless using VPN over Tor).

      1. ProfZimm :

VPN over Tor is exactly what I use but I merely wanted to point out a simple way to keep charges from stacking up on personal bank accounts or credit cards. I’m still confused as to why people are bashing on a review site for services from a VPN. I’ve been using IP Vanish half way into my second year and haven’t had any issues to date though I realize others obviously have. I’ve also used a few others but for now I prefer my current VPN though that will change as it always does.

  27. UnSatisfied :

After recent update, having trouble logging in: Program will not logon automatically and manual login gets hung up. Support was a joke, effectively non existent.
I plan to move on to another service.

  28. Lucas :

Since the update, service has not worked. After 3 days waiting for support, all they have done is resend update link to me. Very poor and like of real attention, I am looking to cancel contract with them. Look for another provider as IPVANISH ARE NO GOOD.

    1. Mika Branestam :

1:A Lot of e-mails to IpVanish about problems with their application
2:They charged me twice for my account last year and refuses to pay back my money -Fraud !
3: I cancelled my subscription last autumn and now they charged me AGAIN and refuses to pay my money back- Criminals !

Where can I get their address ?

      1. Andrew Fidrake :

How did you pay for it? If you used paypal, file a chargeback and you will get money back. They had a gliche in their system where they were double billing but if you contact they will refund you, at least that was my experience. Support got back to me within 24 hours and always fixed whatever problems I was having.

  29. Simon Deau :

I’m surprised you have IPVanish as a viable option for Netflix. I subscribed to IPVanish in 2016 mainly to access Netflix US content. It worked for a while then got blocked with the usual “you seem to be using an unblocker or proxy.”

Tech support were aware of the issue and working on it. After 3 months it was still not resolved. I cancelled my subscription and was able to get a full refund. Maybe they finally figured it out…

But like some mentioned, I also had few invoicing glitches that were all resolved by customer support. So one piece of general advice, watch your bills 🙂

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Simon,

We do our best to keep all our articles up to date, but given the ever-shifting nature of the Netflix landscape, this can be hard. We are going to take another look at out 5 Best Netflix VPN Providers, and make any changes as appropriate.

  30. YuQiu :

I tried to sign up, never received the verification email, emailed them three times about it, never heard back, was charged TWICE for their yearly service, emailed them to cancel within time limit, never heard back, was still charged TWICE, and now I’m having to dispute the claim with my CC company. Awful. Still have never heard anything from them.

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi YuQiu,

Ouch! IPVanish is a legit company, so your experience is very unfortunate.

      1. Mike Orszag :

I have used most major VPNs as I travel to China regularly. I had to file a dispute myself (I started with Ipvanish in 2014) and am less than impressed with ipvanish billing and support. I do think this is an important factor in a decision to use or renew a VPN and should be factored into reviews. For my purposes IPvanish was no longer doing what was needed effectively and I had a rough cancellation process. The other comments here about their billing do resonate with me and should be a factor in the reviews.

        1. Douglas Crawford :

          Hi Mike,

If our reviewers run into billing issues (which often crop up after a review is published), we do update the article to reflect that experience. We can only review what we ourselves experience, but this is why a comments section is so important. It allows readers to share their own first-hand experiences with other readers.

      2. Tin Frog :

How can you proclaim IPVanish “a legit company” after a ripoff experience like that? You think maybe the commenter is lying? I seriously doubt it — too many people having problems with this VPN.

You couldn’t PAY ME to venture a dime on it.

        1. Douglas Crawford :

          Hi Tin Frog,

I do not doubt YuQiu’s experience. In fact, it is precisely in order to share such experiences that these comment sections exist! But I do know that it is unusual. I have persoanlly reviewed IPVanish many times over the years, and have never experienced any billing issues with the service. Our user stats also show that thousands of our readers sign-up to IPVanish all the time, and yet reports of this kind are rare. So what I am saying is that, sure, some users have obviously had a bad experience with the company, but company is not running a scam. It may cock things up occasionally, but it also has many thousands of happy customers.

  31. Johnny Sams :

Why did you delete or not publish my comments about your sorry service. Classic “fly by night”. FU

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Johnny,

We hand moderate all comments due to the amount of spam we receive, and because we like to answer any questions. This is why your comment did not appear immediately. FWIW, IPVanish is not “our service” -we are a simply a review and comparison website. Thank you for being so polite.

  32. Johnny Sams :

Created an account and one week later was still not able to access that account, this after numerous communications(3or4 times daily) with rude and inconsiderate replies from their support staff. I was given the spin when I needed support. Support staff is inferior and not accountable. I wouldn’t trust this organization to mow my grass. Try another option!

  33. Mike Wurlitzer :

Would like to check it out, as other services have failed but WebRoot anti-virus keeps blocking any IPVanish web page warning of malicious links or payload

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Mike,

WebRoot anti-virus is deferentially making an error here. IPVanish is a well-established and respectable company. I’m sure there must be some way way for you to whitelist the website using WebRoot.

  34. James :

I have pulled 100Mbps speeds over multiple servers in US no problem. Excellent service

  35. Steve Duke :

    *Take Heed*
I tried a 3 month discounted ‘trial’ with IPVanish and even after this ‘trial’ period was up they were still taking my money. I sent them numerous email’s explaining the situation. I was told that my account was deleted when in fact they still took my money!!!
    You have been warned.

  36. Dan :

Was getting good service for around a year. Last 4-5 months has been terrible. Servers supposed to be in UK are in Netherlands or Belgium. Have contacted support and got excuses. Thinking of going elsewhere.

  37. Charlie :

These clowns actually sent me an email saying that it was “fishy” that my IP address didn’t match my credit card address and could I send them a gov’t issued photo ID. Yeah. Because intelligent people would do that??!??!?!?!? The word irony just doesn’t cover a company that d@mned stupid.

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Charlie,

Hmm. I will note that VPN companies are particularly vulnerable to credit card fraud, as there is no physical part of their service that is required for delivery to a real world address. It is also true that if you pay by credit card then IPVanish will know exactly who you are anyway. For greater anonymity, always pay using properly mixed Bitcoins (which IPVanish accepts). Do be aware, however, that your VPN provider will always know your true IP address (so you are never truly anonymous).

  38. Dave Norris :

Since this review in June / as of August – IPVanish has updated the max 2 concurrent devices to 5 devices … So far only a couple of days / this service rocks!

Pricing is in line if not better than many – a solid service / give it a try for a month.

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Dave,

Thanks for the heads-up. That’s great news! I have updated this review, but it may take a while for the info to filter through to all our 5 Best lists.

  39. Mr.Jingles :

I try IPvanish this year because offer some good extra as scramble, kill switch, and no data logs.

I try ironsok… and I was very happy super fast multiple vpn 3 at time , good dns spoof .

IPvanish so so the app on windows is not good and nice as the mac , had issue in speed more than one time and the support says is because is a VPN ( wait a minut but I pay for it premium… btw ) have a real big issue in dns or (location ) Example : used sweden now and it says Amsterdam …. used Singapor it says America …. this is bad for people that need a good location associated by VPN .
Also many website or app find that I use a VPN !! gumtree.c o m example etc.. this not happen to me with other services…

In general I am 50% satisfied still have one year will see if the services become better.

  40. intrepix :

Many reviews are either paid, biased or unknowingly post reviews without ever knowing or experiencing software, server speed or specifics unknown to them simply because they haven’t personally experienced any problems. I have had different problems associated with different VPN’s but you won’t read about them in most of the reviews that i have read. Its still a user be warned and “IF” these VPN service providers were so confident that they are the fastest, the best or provide a great service, “no hassle” money back guarantees would be posted without any of them using cloaked excuses not to. This crap about conditional refunds based on their service techs is a condition I don’t want, been there and most have tiered technical support in which you have a problem, the first to waste you time is their online support.
Then comes the level 2 support and if all of that fails well, we can all go to level 3, 4 or wherever they direct you. Truth, if I wanted to be a beta tester for their VPN service, I’d apply for the job and get paid for the frustration instead of paying them.
Hidemyass works but many of its servers are overloaded, speeds are slow to ridiculous especially in the hub ports like Seattle. PureVPN, I wouldn’t bother with as getting connected is a major exercise I could live without. PIA or private internet access is above average when it comes to speed but throughput on their servers could be far better considering some of the locations they have. NordVPN speeds are average and not as high as they should be but they are off the radar when it comes to the US Gov’t trying to get anything out of them so security is about as good as it gets with them.
There are some VPN’s that are so pricey, I have declined to try or buy so they might be good, they might not be good or suitable for everyone but you won’t read anything about them if there is and it relates back to reviewers and their personal reviews based on whatever personal experience they’ve had. This nonsense about which VPN is best for Android, or Windows or IOS or Linux makes about as much sense as which bottled water is best to drink. Its still user beware and read the refund policies before you buy

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi intrepix,

It is true that when it comes to claims made by many (but not all) VPN providers, Caveat Emptor. BestVPN exists in order to help readers through this minefeild, and we always review services hands-on. As for “This nonsense about which VPN is best for Android, or Windows or IOS or Linux” – in part these articles do exist because that’s what people search for in Google, but some providers do support say, Linux, but better than others (if they they do at all), and for example, and we add additional information to such articles that readers interested in the subject may find useful (such as how to setup OpenVPN on Android in our 5 Best VPNs for Android article.)

  41. Rob :

I had the same problem as Bruce i.e. trying to register over a VPN.

I sent a support ticket and within 20 mins they had sent me my login credentials and off we went!

  42. anders :

Is this not a US based service? meaning they are forced to keep some logs?

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi anders,

IPVanish is a US-based service, but the US has no mandatory data retention laws whatsoever. The NSA might tap its servers anyway, or a court could issue an NSL with accompanying gag order but this cannot simply be assumed.

  43. Md Kawser Alam :

I want to use you 1 years pvn. I have a big set up . I heard from my one friend that your pvn work well than other PVA. If i get good result with your pvn then i need more than 10 pvn at a time and i hope it will gradually increase with me set up. I feel prefer you may contact at my skype: comet.it or you can text me your skype.

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Md,

This is review. Please contact IPVanish instead.

  44. John :

Interesting review, IPVanish does seem to be quite good.
However I’m a bit worried about speed: I see you only tested speed from a 10/10-ish Mbps connection. My connection is 100/50 Mbps and I wonder if the VPN will put a horribly low limit on that. Actually, it seems that UK and US East servers already limited your speed to some extent. Did you do any tests from a faster connection?

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi John,

Our reviewer used the connection that he had, so I’m afraid not. IPVanish does, however, offer a 7-day money-back guarantee (which I believe it honors). So the best course might to do a trial run and test the service out for yourself.

  45. Johnny Cool :

I have been using IPVanish for just over one year. For me, it’s been the best VPN service I’ve used for its easy setup, features, speed, number of servers and price. (I’ve tried various other ones over the years, some more expensive until I came across IPVanish – works a treat!)
As for support, I only had one minor “issue” and the response was fast, courteous and resolved very quickly.

  46. Mike :

A bit of advice: If using IPVanish on a Mac, you’re better off using a 3rd-party app like Tunnelblick to manage the OpenVPN connections. In mine at least, the Mac IPVanish app was buggy as hell, and upon uninstalling, it kept the kill-switch active for all internet connections, killing connectivity.
I was happy to delete and re-configure the different wired and wireless interfaces myself, but I can’t many people are happy to put up with this level of bother.
    The Windows app works well.

  47. Steve :

WARNING! ipvanish will renew your credit card without notice, whether monthly or yearly and it will impossible to get a refund. DO NOT USE!

  48. Jordan :

I told You fucking idiots to cancel my subscription.

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Jordan,

Do you understand that we are a review website, and that we have nothing to do with this service? If you have a problem with IPVanish then please contact them about it, rather than leaving comments such as this on our review page.

  49. Bruce :

Painful process. Tried to log onto the site from the UAE. Site is blocked. Then had to use ANOTHER vpn to log onto their site. Tried to make a payment and PayPal doesnt work. So had to use my credit card. Guess what? Payment went through but they blocked my account because my physical location & IP address didnt match (due to my using the VPN). They sent an email asking for authentication with no timelines at all on when they will resolve the issue. Best part is you can’t even give up on the process and seek refund since you have already paid for a service you can’t access! Ipvanish might be a great VPN but if you are access it from a country which has internet restrictions, best you place your best on more reliable VPNs.

    1. Douglas Crawford :

      Hi Bruce,

Ouch! I have found in the past, however, that IPVanish does honor its 7-day money back guarantee (or at least it did for me).

  50. Dimitri M :
