ExpressVPN Demo ExpressVPN Demo

It's difficult to beat ExpressVPN when it comes to finding a stellar Windows VPN! The service was one of the very first VPNs I ever used, and since then, I've always been impressed by just how easy the ExpressVPN software is to install. Plus, a subscription comes jam-packed with all the features you'd expect from a high-end provider.

The ExpressVPN empire

There are ExpressVPN servers scattered all over the globe – in 104 countries , to be exact! This is great news for folks who want to spoof their location to appear overseas, either to unblock geo-restricted content or bypass censorship efforts, and you can connect to any ExpressVPN server in just a few clicks. Alternatively, if performance is your main concern, you can let ExpressVPN's Smart Location algorithm pick out the best VPN server for you.

ExpressVPN routinely claims a top 10 spot in our daily speed tests, too, which means that it can handle online gaming, torrenting, and VoIP calls. Plus, the full list of streaming services that ExpressVPN can unblock is staggeringly long – subscribers will have full access to international catalog libraries on sites like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime, and Hulu. Essentially, you'll never run out of shows or movies to watch!

No logs, no problems

Nobody wants to be followed across the web, whether it's by an ISP, network admin, or a nosey government. Fortunately, ExpressVPN's OpenVPN can put a stop to snooping – and I particularly like that the service's vast array of apps means that you can take this protection with you on the go, too. Users can also take their pick of several VPN protocols to customize their connection; IKEv2 is a popular substitute for OpenVPN, and ExpressVPN's very own Lightway is making waves, thanks to its WireGuard-based balance of speed and security. ExpressVPN also packs obfuscated (stealth) servers for avoiding restrictions, DNS leak protection which is vital for torrenters, and an automatic kill-switch that'll keep your original IP address concealed in the event of a VPN dropout.

In addition to this full toolset of security features, ExpressVPN has consistently set the privacy standard across the industry. The service abides by a no-logs policy, which has been vetted by auditing powerhouse PwC, so there's no need to worry about your activity or connection logs being stored. In addition, being based in the British Virgin Islands takes ExpressVPN out of the reach of more invasive jurisdictions.

Style and substance

The Windows ExpressVPN app looks and feels fantastic, frankly. VPN newbies will find the interface intuitive without being overly complicated, and I particularly like how easy the settings are to customize, too. Even the more advanced settings can be toggled with a few clicks. ExpressVPN is certainly one of the pricier services on this list, but it's hard to deny the sense of quality you'll feel when using the Windows app – although I'd like to see the service up the number of available simultaneous connections from 8 .

If you're ever in a pickle, the ExpressVPN customer support is second to none. Agents are on standby 24/7 via live chat, and when I put this option to the test with a few questions, I got great advice almost immediately. You'll be able to check out the ExpressVPN Windows app (as well as apps for other platforms) with a 30-day money-back guarantee – which gives you plenty of time to trial the service without risking a dime.

Nord Demo

Nord Demo Nord Demo

NordVPN is an incredibly popular service hailing from Panama. It's common knowledge that Windows devices are more susceptible to viruses, partly because the OS is so popular worldwide, and that's why I'd recommend pairing NordVPN with any Windows device. Few VPNs can go toe-to-toe with the provider when it comes to security features – and unblocking power!

The streamer's dream

The NordVPN server network is extensive and constantly being upgraded. Currently, users can take their pick of servers in 61 countries – and that's a huge selection! With this kind of range, you'll have no trouble unblocking geo-restricted content or getting around those annoying bans at work or school. I also like that NordVPN has a Quick Connect button; a handy feature that'll connect you to the server that suits you best, as defined by the provider's algorithm.

I frequently recommend NordVPN to avid streamers, and that's because the service can reliably unblock the world's most in-demand streaming platforms and apps. So, whether you want to check out what's new on Netflix US, or access local sites when traveling abroad, NordVPN has you covered – and its free Smart DNS feature even makes it possible to stream geo-restricted content directly to your smart TV! It's also worth noting that NordVPN isn't as quick as Express, but can still keep up with HD streaming marathons.

No skimping on security

If you want a VPN with a roster of advanced features, then NordVPN could be your match made in heaven. Besides OpenVPN encryption, the Windows app comes with an automated kill-switch, which protects against accidental data leaks, obfuscated servers that can conceal your VPN usage entirely, and even the option to use VPN over Tor for additional anonymity. This makes NordVPN a must-have for anyone who'd prefer to conceal their online habits from their ISP, government, local network administrators, and WiFi hotspot providers. And, because NordVPN permits P2P connections, it's suitable for torrenting (though admittedly it doesn’t provide port forwarding).

NordVPN also isn't interested in holding on to user logs – and has invited auditing firm, PwC, to examine its zero-logs claim. This is just what I like to see from industry-leading services, and Panama-based NordVPN's distance from the invasive EU and US jurisdictions is equally as encouraging.

Simple and clean

NordVPN's Windows app has a fresh, user-friendly feel, and I'm confident that VPN newbies and tech veterans alike will have no trouble navigating around the various options and menus. No part of NordVPN's GUI feels overwhelming – and apps are available for other operating systems, too! NordVPN customers have 6 simultaneous connections to play with, but that's not a huge amount, so you'll need to take advantage of NordVPN's router compatibility if you want to cover all of the gadgets in your home, regardless of connection limits. Finally, the provider's ad-blocking feature is a welcome addition to the roster, and banishes any invasive pop-ups, ads, trackers, and even malware.

The NordVPN customer service team is on hand 24/7 (via live chat and email) to answer any questions that arise. And, like most top-tier VPNs, subscribers have a 30-day money-back guarantee to put to good use – and I think it's well worth taking NordVPN for a spin, seeing as there's really nothing that the service does badly!

Surfshark is a cheap Windows VPN. It's the new kid on the block, but what it lacks in tenure, it makes up for in performance and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Surfshark Demo

Surfshark Demo Surfshark Demo

Surfshark is another young VPN on our list, but don't be fooled – it's taken the VPN market by storm in the short time it's been around. This is largely thanks to blistering speeds and a huge network of servers, as well as a recent UI overhaul that's given the provider's apps a sleek new look.

A speed demon

Surfshark users will be well and truly spoiled for choice when it comes to picking out a server, with coverage in 100 countries ! Obviously, this is great news when it comes to location spoofing – it makes evading ISP snooping or accessing geo-restricted content a breeze. Surfshark even gives users the option to hit the "Fastest Server" button to be paired up with the server currently boasting the best speeds!

And Surfshark is seriously quick. In fact, it regularly ranks around the fifth place in our ProPrivacy speed tests, and can more than handle HD streaming or online gaming. Surfshark is also capable of unblocking the world's most in-demand streaming services, like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime, and Hulu. Besides, its very own smart DNS service comes in handy if you're looking to access geo-restricted services via your smart TV.

Surf smart, and surf secure

Surfshark offers robust OpenVPN encryption (although IKEv2 is implemented by default in the Windows app), and users also have the option of checking out the ever-promising, super speedy WireGuard protocol. I particularly like that Surfshark blocks ads and malware and offers a double-hop VPN option, which routes your connection through two different servers to provide an added layer of security. Plus, the Surfshark kill-switch is superb – just remember to head into your settings menu to enable it!

Being based in the British Virgin Islands keeps Surfshark beyond the reach of the US and UK jurisdictions, and means that the provider is not required by law to store user data. In addition, Surfshark's zero-logs claim has been audited by one of the industry giants, Cure53! This is just the sort of proactive approach to privacy that I like to see, and why I frequently recommend Surfshark to anyone looking to boost their online anonymity.

No more limits

There are revamped Surfshark apps available for all major platforms, including Windows, and I was thoroughly impressed by the Windows app during testing (as well as a very handy mini mode). Navigating around the app felt smooth and responsive, and I was able to connect immediately to all of the server locations I tested. Plus, Surfshark's features are easy to find and use – you won't be clicking around endlessly trying to find stuff. Where Surfshark really blows me away, however, is with its unlimited simultaneous connections. This means you can connect as many devices as you want to the service, and all at the same time, at no extra cost.

As is to be expected from today's top VPN providers, Surfshark offers customers a 30-day money-back guarantee and 24/7 live chat support. If you'd rather put Surfshark to the test without spending a dime, and if you're an Android, iOS, or Mac user, you'll have a 7-day free trial to do just that with – and Surfshark will even email you a reminder when the trial is about to expire.

PIA Demo

PIA Demo PIA Demo

Private Internet Access (PIA) is a security-oriented service with subscription plans that won't break the bank. It's also ideal for VPN beginners, as it's compatible with all Windows devices and can be set up with just a few clicks. If you're an advanced user, you can take a look at PIA's raft of advanced settings and customize them to your liking and even examine the open-source software for yourself!

Spoiled for choice

PIA is well-known for its expansive server network that stretches across 84 countries . This is hugely impressive, and gives users plenty of choice when it comes to geo-spoofing their location! A majority of PIA servers are based in the United States, too, meaning that PIA is especially good at unblocking US content from overseas (or whilst on vacation).

When I put the PIA app to the test, I had no trouble accessing US Netflix and didn't run into any trouble with buffering or low-quality streams. Plus, PIA can also unblock all sorts of sites and services that might be blocked by your workplace, ISP, or even an oppressive government – including social media platforms, so you can stay in touch with friends and loved ones. PIA's speeds are consistently impressive, and can hold their own when compared to any of my other top picks in this guide.

Security that was proven in court

PIA's security offering is robust and ever-evolving, and right off the bat, I'm glad to see that the service comes with OpenVPN encryption implemented by default. This'll prevent your workplace, ISP, or government from keeping tabs on your browsing activity. PIA's obfuscation (stealth) feature can even disguise your VPN traffic as regular HTTPS traffic – which is vital if you live somewhere where VPNs are banned. It's also great to see PIA giving users the chance to check out WireGuard, the hot new protocol that's proving popular with streamers, thanks to its speedy, lightweight nature. Torrenters will also appreciate PIA's port forwarding and kill-switch features, as well as the VPN's DNS leak protection.

It's less encouraging to learn that PIA is based in the United States – the home of the NSA, gag orders and warrants. And whilst PIA hasn't undertaken a public audit of its no-logs policy, it has proven its claims in court on more than one occasion.

Portable protection

You'll be able to install the PIA software on your Windows device in a matter of moments – then, once you're set up, you'll find that the app easily competes with other leading services when it comes to value for money. An ad blocker keeps ads and trackers at bay, split tunneling allows users to dictate which apps or sites are routed through the VPN connection, and Unlimited simultaneous connections allow you to cover all of your favorite gadgets! As a result, you'll be able to install PIA on your mobile or tablet and use public Wi-Fi hotspots without worrying about any cyber-crooks or hackers lurking in the shadows.

PIA's customer service team is superb, and accessible via live chat and email, 24/7. A full 30-day money-back guarantee also gives users a month to put the service to the test in their own time, on their own devices, and still ultimately reclaim their cash – although a free 7-day trial is available for iOS and Android users!

PrivateVPN Demo

PrivateVPN Demo PrivateVPN Demo

PrivateVPN is a smaller service that's making big waves across the VPN industry – and it quickly becomes clear why. Its apps are incredibly easy to use, and are available for all platforms (including Windows), and even the most novice of VPN users will have no trouble running through the provider's 1-click-setup. All in all, PrivateVPN is an excellent all-rounder and a service I keep coming back to.

Hopping over restrictions

First things first, it's true that PrivateVPN has a smaller pool of servers when compared to some of the more established names in our list – but servers in 63 countries are still no mean feat! It's worth remembering that PrivateVPN is still a young firm with plenty of growing to do, and that these figures will continue to tick upwards. Plus, the PrivateVPN servers are well situated to help users bypass government restrictions or access geo-restricted content without being monitored.

PrivateVPN is one of my favorite VPN services thanks to its astounding ability to unblock a long list of streaming services. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu; you'll have a world of content at your fingertips. If you're more of a torrenter, you'll be glad to hear that PrivateVPN supports P2P activity. On top of that, your files will download smoothly and quickly, seeing as PrivateVPN regularly places within the top 10 providers in our daily speed tests.

Ticking all the right boxes

As you'd expect from a VPN with "Private" in its name, PrivateVPN comes with an impressive array of security features – and all the very best VPN protocols, including OpenVPN and IKEv2, with WireGuard currently in beta. Comprehensive DNS and IPv6 leak protection keeps your data out of the hands of invasive ISP snooping, and the PrivateVPN stealth servers are a vital inclusion for anyone living under a restrictive regime. I like that PrivateVPN's kill-switch (called Connection Guard) allows users to determine which software should terminate in the event of a VPN connection – and a handy auto-connect feature will reconnect the VPN in sequence if that does happen.

PrivateVPN makes its home in Sweden, which isn't the best news when it comes to privacy (thanks to the country's data retention laws), but fortunately, the service makes up for the fact with the robust zero-logs claim. Ideally, PrivateVPN will take a leaf from its competitors' book, and invest in a public third-party audit of its services to really carve out its position as a champion of digital privacy.

Expert support, whenever you need it

PrivateVPN has fresh, simplistic apps available for all platforms, and gives users 10 simultaneous connections. This isn't a tremendous amount, though it is in line with the industry standard, and so I'd like to see more connections offered in the (hopefully near) future. However, PrivateVPN's Windows app is hugely impressive. I put it through its paces and had no trouble during the installation process, and navigating around the GUI feels intuitive, so beginners and tech-heads alike should feel pretty comfortable.

In addition, I was incredibly impressed by PrivateVPN's live chat customer service. The support staff, composed on in-house developers, was able to answer even my most techy questions without delay – so don't be afraid to reach out, 24/7! As per the norm, PrivateVPN offers users a 30-day money-back guarantee to get a feel for the service, as well as a 7-day free trial for those who'd rather not part with a penny.

6. VyprVPN

VyprVPN is a great all around VPN option for Windows. With great apps for all platforms, privacy features, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

VYPR Demo

VYPR Demo VYPR Demo

VyprVPN allows Windows users to create a total security package; with tons of features and add-ons, revamped apps for Windows devices, and a broad selection of servers, VyprVPN is one of the most consistently solid services out there. And it's a budget-friendly option, too!

Your streaming companion

With a VyprVPN subscription, you'll have access to servers dotted across 70 worldwide locations. That's already an impressive array, and VyprVPN owns each and every one of those servers, as well as all of its hardware. This means that the provider can run its server network without third-party involvement – which keeps your data (and browsing habits) even further beyond the reach of potential snoopers. I also like that VyprVPN allows for unlimited server switching, which comes in handy if you're experiencing server congestion or less-than-ideal speeds.

VyprVPN isn't the speediest service on our list, admittedly, but it can still keep up with virtually any data-intensive task you intend to take on. Gaming, video calls, and HD streaming; VyprVPN can handle it all. Plus, the VPN can effortlessly unblock streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu – and I'd recommend checking out the dedicated VyprVPN streaming servers if you're a film buff or TV fan who doesn't want to be interrupted by pesky buffering circles.

The full privacy package

I was also impressed by VyprVPN's encryption! OpenVPN is implemented to an extremely high standard, which will keep your data and identifiable details out of the reach of any prying eyes. Users also have to opportunity to try out the WireGuard protocol if they're looking for a speedy alternative. VyprVPN's Windows client also comes with DNS leak protection and a customizable kill-switch – two important features for aspiring torrenters. The Chameleon stealth feature is also useful for folks attempting to bypass firewalls in countries like China and Iran.

VyprVPN is based in Switzerland, which means that it's safely outside of the jurisdiction of 5 Eyes nations – although some users may be put off by the fact that VyprVPN's parent company, Golden Frog, has offices in the United States. However, VyprVPN is a fully audited zero-logs service with no interest in keeping hold of your activity logs.

Keeping it simple

VyprVPN is compatible with all popular platforms, including Windows, and all of the provider's apps are easy to use and install. The VyprVPN Windows client, in particular, is a breeze to navigate – they're not overly complicated or cluttered, and even VPN newbies will be able to configure their settings to their liking. I especially like that VyprVPN shows the ping time of its different servers, too, seeing as this makes it that much easier to identify the quickest option. In addition, VyprVPN's 10 simultaneous connections is incredibly generous – and means you'll be able to take your VPN encryption with you wherever you go, on any device.

If you have any burning questions or want help getting things set up, you can reach out to the VyprVPN 24/7 customer service team via live chat, email, or contact form. All in all, it's a great idea to try VyprVPN for yourself, and make the most of its 30-day money-back guarantee.

CyberGhost Demo

CyberGhost Demo CyberGhost Demo

CyberGhost is another big name in the VPN sphere, offering a solid service at a modest price. There's no shortage of servers to connect to, which makes spoofing your location easy-peasy, and the Windows app provides all the features you'll need to protect your digital privacy from the prying eyes of your ISP or government.

Smart servers

CyberGhost has a massive network of speedy servers across the globe – and with servers in 100 countries , you'll have access to content from overseas as well as freedom from locally-imposed censorship measures. I like that CyberGhost also has dedicated servers for streaming and torrenting, and that you can even request a server recommendation based on your preferences and current location.

When I put CyberGhost's speeds to the test, I found that they weren't chart-topping, but still quick enough to remain competitive with our other Windows VPN picks. And, you'll be able to stream in smooth HD regardless of where you are in the world! CyberGhost is a great service when it comes to accessing content, seeing as it can reliably unblock the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, and Disney+, to name a few!

Keeping cyber secrets

CyberGhost's OpenVPN encryption ensures that your original IP address can't be tracked by the sites you visit – so, you'll be able to browse the web freely and privately. The IKEv2 and WireGuard protocols are also available to users who fancy switching things up. Admittedly, CyberGhost doesn't have as many security features as NordVPN or VyprVPN, but it does pack DNS leak protection and an automatic kill-switch. This combo of features will keep your identifiable details from leaking, either accidentally or as a result of a VPN dropout, providing some extra peace of mind. The CyberGhost ad blocker is another well-appreciated feature, and one that's become even more valuable in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and a worrying rise in malicious activity.

Being based in Romania means that CyberGhost isn't bound by law to collect user data, and operates outside of the jurisdiction of 5 and 14 Eyes Alliance members. This is great, but I would like to see the service invest in a third-party audit to sift through its no-logs policy – and the sheer amount of web tracking performed on its site can be more than a little offputting to privacy-conscious users.

Try before you buy

Currently, CyberGhost allows up to 7 simultaneous connections, which should be enough to keep your favorite devices secure – even if you travel overseas or find yourself connecting to public Wi-Fi hotspots. Apps are available for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS, as well as routers, and the recently updated CyberGhost 8 client is a dream to use. Anyone who's ever downloaded and installed a file before will have absolutely no trouble completing CyberGhost's installation process!

But, if you would rather have a helping hand, you can count on the CyberGhost customer service team. They're available 24/7 via live chat or email, and I've always found that their replies are quick and comprehensive – even when it comes to more technical queries. It's also well worth noting that anyone who purchases a CyberGhost subscription for over one month will receive a 45-day money-back guarantee. This is massively generous, and gives you a huge swathe of time in which to put the VPN through its paces!

IPVanish Demo

IPVanish Demo IPVanish Demo

IPVanish has an excellent Windows app, and installing and using it couldn't be simpler. Tech veterans and VPN newbies alike will be able to benefit from IPVanish's well-implemented encryption and security features, and connecting to the provider's server is remarkably quick.

Plenty of locations to choose from

IPVanish boasts an expansive network of servers in 75 global locations. This gives users plenty of options when it comes to geo-hopping from continent to continent – and means that anyone will be able to gain access to content from back home when on vacation. I like that IPVanish's "Best Available Server" option highlights an optimal recommendation tailored to the country or city of your choice. Similarly, it's possible to filter servers by their current ping times, so you can make your choice according to speed.

While IPVanish can unblock Netflix US libraries when connected to the LA, Dallas, Atlanta, and Chicago servers, there's no guarantee that it'll be able to access other international catalogs. Similarly, the service is pretty hit-and-miss when it comes to unblocking other in-demand streaming sites – so if TV and movies are your thing, you might need to look elsewhere. However, IPVanish is still a speedy, reliable service that can keep up with resource-intensive tasks, like gaming, torrenting, and video calls.

Under the radar

As you'd expect from a VPN of IPVanish's caliber, OpenVPN encryption keeps your traffic secure from snoopers as you browse the web, though a selection of alternative protocols is available – and folks looking for a combination of speed, lightweight performance, and security should consider WireGuard. In addition, IPVanish has its very own kill-switch and DNS leak protection, so you don't need to worry about leaving a trail in your wake... even in the event of a VPN dropout! The SOCKS5 web proxy is another handy tool that underscores IPVanish's versatility, and can be used to bypass network restrictions without sacrificing speed.

IPVanish is a zero-logs provider, which is excellent, although the service has not completed a third-party audit yet. Hopefully, IPVanish invests in one soon, seeing as some potential users might be wary of its US headquarters given the NSA presence in the country.

Compatibility across the board

When testing the IPVanish Windows app, I was thoroughly impressed by the overall quality, and had no trouble connecting to servers or navigating through the service's settings. Some users might find the green-and-black Matrix-style apps a little outdated, but they're responsive and easy-to-use, even for beginners. You'll be able to install IPVanish on just about any device you own, in fact, including routers, although with unlimited simultaneous connections available, you certainly won't have to!

IPVanish's customer support is now available 24/7 via email, live chat, and phone. Responses can be a little slow, however, which isn't ideal if you're trying to troubleshoot and want to avoid a headache. But, it's still worth putting IPVanish to the test in your own time by making the most of its 30-day money-back guarantee.

Ivacy Demo

Ivacy Demo Ivacy Demo

Ivacy is a Singapore-based service that's often praised for its outstanding value for money – especially if you commit to a long-term subscription. This bargain provider comes with all the premium features you'll need to shore up your digital privacy, and can unblock a long list of streaming services.

Making a smart choice

Currently, there are Ivacy servers in 100 worldwide locations, which is pretty impressive! This network of servers makes Ivacy a versatile pick for anyone looking to unblock streams, game servers, or social media sites that might've been banned by your workplace or school. I like that Ivacy can give users a helping hand via the Smart Purpose Selection feature, which identifies and recommends the best server for you, depending on what you'd like to do! The algorithm can automatically connect you to servers suited for streaming, unblocking content, and secure downloading.

I used the Ivacy Windows app to access Netflix US as well as BBC iPlayer and was more than happy with the results. My streams were all clear, buffer-free, and HD, which is largely due to Ivacy's incredible speeds. The provider routinely clocks in the top ten (or even five) of our daily speed tests, and can even put a stop to ISP throttling to provide an extra boost.

Cover your bases

Ivacy's Windows client uses the IKEv2 protocol by default, but OpenVPN and L2TP/IPsec are also available for those folks who'd rather switch things up. I'd recommend sticking to OpenVPN wherever possible, seeing as it's the industry's gold standard when it comes to encryption, and provides watertight privacy whether you're using the VPN on a desktop at home, or on public Wi-Fi on a laptop. IPv6 leak protection and a kill-switch are welcome features, particularly for torrenters, though you'll need to head into Ivacy's settings to enable the latter. Ivacy also offers port forwarding via its NAT firewall – however, the firewall is a bolt-on extra that'll cost you extra.

I'd like to see Ivacy undertake an external audit in the near future – it's something that plenty of other big-name, premium providers are investing in, and a great way to reassure users that their privacy really does come first. Ivacy is based in Singapore, an increasingly popular location for VPN services, and is not bound by law to store user logs regarding their internet activity.

Real ease of use

Ivacy users get 10 simultaneous connections to play with, which should be more than enough to cover all of your favorite devices, so you can stay secure (and encrypted) no matter where you travel or which gadget you're using. Plus, there are Ivacy apps available for all major platforms. The Windows client looks sleek and feels responsive, and comes jam-packed with features – including a Secure Downloading feature that'll automatically scan anything you download for signs of malware.

If you'd like any help getting Ivacy set up, or want to figure out which server is best suited to your needs, get in touch with Ivacy's customer care team. They're around 24/7 via email, live chat, and support ticket, and have never failed to answer my questions – including the techy ones! All in all, it's well worth using Ivacy's 30-day money-back guarantee to compare it with our other top picks in your own time.

Proton Demo

Proton Demo Proton Demo

ProtonVPN was developed by the same folks who designed ProtonMail – so you know it's a service that has your security in mind. The VPN has a superb reputation across Reddit, and boasts a choice of apps for all platforms, including Windows. Best of all, the Windows client comes with all the features you're ever likely to need, and for a price that won't break the bank.

No slowing down

ProtonVPN has servers in 71 countries . Other providers have more in more places, but ProtonVPN's network is still nothing to turn your nose up at. I particularly like how easy it is to connect to any one of these servers – and there's even a Quick Connect option that'll pick the best option for you, depending on what you'd like to do, where you'd like to connect to, and current ping times.

If you want to unblock Netflix US, or other on-demand services, you're going to need to shell out for a ProtonVPN premium plan. Once you have, you'll be able to access a long list of sites, including Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and HBO Max! ProtonVPN also supports P2P activity and boasts unlimited bandwidth, as well as being incredibly fast! In fact, the provider often sits at, or around, the top spot in our daily speed tests.

Vital features, all included

ProtonVPN doesn't pull any punches when it comes to protecting your digital privacy – which is exactly why it nabbed a top spot in our list! OpenVPN encryption is well-implemented, although users can also opt for WireGuard and IKEv2 protocols if they so choose. It's great to see that ProtonVPN protects against DNS leaks, too, and has a built-in kill-switch that'll prevent your original IP address from leaking if your VPN connection happens to fail. Perfect Forward Security is another fantastic, and rare, feature that ensures that your encrypted traffic can't be caught and decrypted at a later date. I also like that the service offers a Tor over VPN option, so users can even access Onion sites!

The VPN makes its home in Switzerland, and whilst the country isn't the privacy haven it once was, it's still beyond the EU and US jurisdictions, and not a member of the 14 Eyes surveillance network. Even more encouraging is the fact that ProtonVPN has had its zero-logs policy audited by SEC Consult – although they haven't been made public, which is a shame.

Stay covered wherever you go

ProtonVPN apps are available for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Linux devices, and the service currently offers 10 simultaneous connections. The ProtonVPN Windows app is one of my favorites – it looks great, there's no clutter on the screen, and it's replete with features. For example, being able to banish ads from your browsing session with the help of NetShield is a nice bonus, and P2P activity is permitted throughout the network of servers, so long as you're a premium plan subscriber! It should be noted that ProtonVPN's free tier subscription is one of the best in the business, and a great way to test out the service without paying a penny, so long as you don't mind a smaller server selection and reduced speeds.

If you'd rather try the full, premium plan, you're able to do so with the ProtonVPN 30-day money-back guarantee – and I think it's well worth it, seeing as the provider is ideal for anyone looking for watertight security and a full toolkit of features.

Which is the fastest VPN for Windows?

With a fast VPN, Windows users will actually be able to enjoy the internet speeds they pay for. Most VPNs have sluggish servers that slow down their subscribers' internet connection – meaning that the money those subscribers pay their ISP goes to waste. This is why it's essential to pick the right VPN for your Windows device.

Our recommendations invest in fast Tier-1 server networks all over the world, so you'll be able to stream in HD, enjoy smooth online gaming, and even download torrents securely.

And be sure to check out the table below if you're on the hunt for the fastest Windows VPN out there. At ProPrivacy, we test the industry-leading VPNs regularly, across three global locations, and display the data for our readers, so they can see which service is leading the pack in real-time.

ExpressVPN NordVPN Private Internet Access
ProPrivacy.com SpeedTest (average) 100 85.9 62.2

Performance 10 9 8
Reliability 9 8 8

My internet speeds are slow. Will a VPN help?

There are plenty of websites that claim a VPN can improve your internet speeds – unfortunately, this is a common misunderstanding.

A VPN works by routing your traffic via a VPN server on its way to its final destination (for example, websites you visit or online services you use). Ultimately, this extends the journey your data packets need to make. A VPN must also encrypt and decrypt your traffic, which further increases latency.

For this reason, even the fastest VPNs will slow down your internet. However, whilst quality providers should have only a nominal effect on your speeds, you might wonder why so many sites claim otherwise.

It all comes down to throttling. Some ISPs purposefully engage in bandwidth throttling to prevent congestion during peak times. Under these circumstances, a VPN can make a positive impact on your internet speeds.

A VPN prevents your ISP from knowing what you get up to online. As a result, your ISP won't be able to track your activity when you're gaming, streaming, or torrenting – and therefore won't throttle your speeds!

If you suspect that you're being affected by ISP throttling, it's well worth investing in a VPN to see if it makes a difference. All of our picks for Windows are quick, with Tier-1 server networks, and do their best to minimize their impact on your speeds.

Why do I need a VPN for Windows?

Your digital privacy is at risk whenever you connect to the internet – and ISPs, governments, and the sites you visit can all track your data against your wishes. A VPN encrypts your traffic to prevent this, however. With a VPN, you'll regain control over your digital footprint, making them the best available personal privacy tool.

But how exactly does a VPN keep your data secure, your browsing history private, and your Windows devices safe?

Can I use a VPN for streaming on a Windows computer?

Absolutely. When you connect to a VPN server, you are given a valid IP address in the location of that server. This means that you can use a VPN to access your home TV services on your Windows PC while you are away on business or vacation.

No matter where you go in the world, you can always connect to a VPN server back home. For example, many people use a VPN to watch popular US streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, ESPN, Peacock, and others while abroad.

You can also connect to servers in different countries like the UK to watch BBC iPlayer, Italy to watch Sky, Australia to watch Seven Network, and more.

It's worth noting that a VPN can also help you bypass streaming blocks in your own country. For instance, if your employer has blocked access to local streaming services and TV network streams, you can use a VPN to get around those restrictions.

By connecting to a VPN server in your own country, you can avoid the limitations put on your local network, enabling you to play games, use social media, watch YouTube or Netflix, stream TV broadcasts, or do anything else that has been blocked by your employer.

Bear in mind that there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Firstly, you will need to choose a VPN provider that has servers in the locations you need. Additionally, you will want to make sure that the VPN provider you choose offers fast and reliable connections, and has servers that work with your favorite streaming providers - not all VPNs do.

All our recommendations have been tested with popular streaming services on a Windows machine. However, you may still want to check your chosen provider yourself with your accounts using the money-back guarantee.

How we test a Windows VPN's performance

All of our top Windows VPN picks come with a money-back guarantee. You should always take advantage of this offer period (usually around 30 days) when you first sign up for a service – it's a great opportunity to put the VPN through its paces and determine whether it suits your needs. If not, the guarantee will let you reclaim your cash, meaning there's no risk involved, and you can trial another provider.

ProPrivacy VPN review process

When our ProPrivacy researchers test a service, they apply several stress tests to the service, including:

Do all the advertised features work?

First things first, we test the provider's Windows VPN client to ensure that the security and privacy features actually work. We'll also check the range of features, and compare this selection to other VPNs on the market.

Generally, a premium VPN will offer features such as a kill-switch, DNS leak protection, and OpenVPN encryption. Some even come with extras, like obfuscation (cloaking), port selection, a choice of protocols, auto-connect, double-hop encryption, and even VPN into Tor.

How does the VPN perform?

Next up is the VPN's performance, and we run checks to ensure that it isn't leaking data or doing anything else that would put your privacy at risk. If the VPN is secure, we'll take a look at its connection speeds, too. This is an important consideration, seeing as it determines whether the service is quick enough to handle data-intensive tasks like streaming in HD, downloading via BitTorrent, or online gaming.

Is the VPN secure?

We'll also check VPN privacy policies to ensure that they're located in a jurisdiction that allows them to operate without storing invasive logs. All of our recommendations have superb track records when it comes to securing user data – and sticking to their zero-logs policies.

How compatible is the VPN with Windows?

There are several Windows operating systems in circulation, so we make sure our VPN recommendations cover them all. The VPN apps on our list have clients for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. They also have software compatible with all recent versions of Windows 7, Windows 8, and, most importantly, Windows 10.

How to install and set up a VPN for Windows

Each and every one of the VPNs we've mentioned in this guide has custom VPN apps for Windows 10. This makes setup simple – so simple, in fact, that you'll just need to:

  1. Subscribe to one of the best VPNs for Windows – and don't forget to take advantage of their money-back guarantees to test them out without risking your cash.
  2. Download and install the VPN software by following the on-screen instructions.
  3. Log in to your VPN, and activate any privacy settings you might need.
  4. Connect to a server, and remember to choose the nearest physical location for the best speeds.

That's all there is to it!

There's no real reason to experiment with the advanced settings of your VPN – unless you want to. All services in our guide opt for OpenVPN encryption, the industry's gold standard, but we've covered some alternative protocols below if you'd rather explore your options.

Compare VPN protocols for Windows

Once you've installed the VPN software, you can head into the settings menu to pick which VPN protocol to use. These VPN encryption protocol options can be confusing, especially to VPN newcomers, so it's useful to know their strengths and weaknesses before making your decision.

To help you out, here's a list of commonly available protocols and how they stack up:

VPN Protocol Speed Security
Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) Fast Weak
Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol(L2TP)/Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) Average Average
Internet Key Exchange v2 (IKEv2) Fast Average
OpenVPN Fast Strong

We recommend using OpenVPN for Windows PCs

OpenVPN is by far the fastest and most secure VPN protocol for PC users. However, please be aware that OpenVPN can be implemented in various ways, and many of those implementation methods are not completely secure – so it's important to configure your VPN properly.

We would strongly recommend implementing OpenVPN using your VPN app and controlling it within the settings.

If you require some help getting things set up, we cover the installation process in more detail in our how to install a VPN on Windows guide.

Can I get a free VPN for Windows?

There are trustworthy free VPNs out there – unfortunately, most of these services just aren't reliable. They're often dangerous, designed to collect and sell user data for a quick profit, and some are even stuffed with spyware, viruses, and other nasties.

Running a VPN service isn't cheap. No subscription will ever truly be free – it's impossible! The free services we recommend offer a taste of what a VPN can do, but it's a limited trial, best suited for users who need access to a VPN in an emergency.

Legitimate free VPNs come with restrictions galore, too. This is because they primarily exist to advertize the full, premium subscription – like a sample platter at a grocery store. Expect a reduced number of server locations, monthly download caps, and connection speed restrictions.

Installing a free Windows VPN is a great way to introduce yourself to the technology, however – particularly if you've never used a VPN before. You'll get a sense of how they work and what they can do for you in real time. Don't be put off if the free VPN feels limited, though; this is by design.

Try premium VPN services for free

Our hand-picked VPNs come with money-back guarantees that allow you to put their features to the test without limitations – and still claim your money back. As a result, you'll be able to compare our recommended VPNs in your own time before deciding on your favorite. So get stuck in and try a few!

Thank you Ray for such an awesome the article, I'm not big fan of Windows since my first MacBook 2008, I shifted to MacOS and I couldn't be any Happier. Regards those VPN, I just wanted to share my humble experience of using their services. All of them are amazing and I think they have their pros and cons. Put from my experience I found that not all of them provide a great speed, with keeping in mind connection could be a bit slow due to the encrypted connection and the location of the servers. I usually my two must favorite locations are U.K. & Netherlands. My connection is 100mbps (12.5 MB/s), and when connecting to those locations I found my connection drops to 15mbps, which led me to try all of them, and I found speed is not satisfactory for me, till I signed up with Hide.me which became my favorite and the only VPN I'm using at the moment. The speed with connection to U.K. Server is 91mbps connection to NL is 95mbps, which is really still good. I still don't understand what can be effecting the connection maybe the load of people connecting to certain server. Yet with providers promising us we are connection to faster server, or maybe connection from Middle East is effecting too. Any how thank you for the awesome article.
