Trust and integrity – our two core values. For the past 5 years our experts & users have reviewed hundreds of VPNs. Our reviews are never influenced by the industry. We sometimes earn affiliate commissions, which contribute to our fight for a free internet. Click here to find out more.

Below we explain how to unblock Netflix, bypass the proxy error and enable you to access and watch a much larger catalog of shows using your existing subscription.

Unblock Netflix with a VPN

The Best VPN to Unblock Netflix: Summary List

Here’s our roundup list of recommended VPNs that can be used to unblock Netflix:

  1. NordVPN – The best Netflix VPN. Works with Netflix US, France, Canada & more
  2. ExpressVPN – A great VPN that reliably unblocks Netflix US and Japan
  3. PrivateVPN – A low cost option to unblock Netflix in US, Australia & France
  4. CyberGhost – A good all-round choice for unblocking Netflix US
  5. PureVPN -A stable and cheap option that still unblocks Netflix

For those unaware of how to unblock Netflix, the answer is a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which allows you to access extra content in a few simple steps. Don’t be scared! We’ll hold your hand every step of the way in this easy-to-follow guide.

Netflix offers significantly more content to users in the United States. With a VPN, you can unblock all that extra video content using your existing account, regardless of which country you subscribe from. When it comes to unblocking Netflix content from anywhere in the world, we aim to find fast, easy to use and cheap VPNs that work reliably. We’ve assigned a dedicated team of Netflix Ninjas to test VPNs on a daily basis and find you the best possible solution.

If you are new to VPNs, these skeleton keys of the digital world allow you to alter your online location at the click of a button. All you need to do is connect to a server in the United States and the full Netflix US library of content will be at your disposal. Likewise for our US readers, you can teleport your digital self from sunny California to the streets of London to get the latest shows on Netflix UK.

If you’ve experienced the dreaded Netflix “proxy error”, you’ve probably already got a VPN but it has been blocked by Netflix. Fear not, our list of best Netflix VPNs will have you back to streaming in no time.

To ensure our recommended VPNs are working with Netflix, we check them on a weekly basis. We test each provider across multiple regions so our advice is always up to date.

Top 5 VPNs that work with Netflix

Our Thoughts

We can confirm that NordVPN works with Netflix and unblocks most libraries. What makes NordVPN unique is that you can unblock Netflix US without connecting to a server in the States. This feature, called SmartPlay, is great because it means you can enjoy the download speeds of a local server while streaming Netflix US. SmartPlay is implemented by default and can be accessed using all NordVPN apps.

We have tested NordVPN and you can connect to Netflix US using any server with the exception of France, Canada, the Netherlands, and Japan. For people located in these regions, you will need to connect to a server in a different country. Our recommendation being to use a server based as close to your true location as possible i.e. a neighbouring country.

We can also confirm that you can access regional libraries in France, Canada, the Netherlands and Japan by connecting to any server in that particular region.

Pros

  • Unblocks Netflix US

  • SmartPlay makes it easy to stream from anywhere

  • Super fast

  • Easy to use

I 100% agree with your award to their customer support. They were so friendly and giving clear steps how take all needed tests and set up my router which I found quite difficult (I got scared seeing all those terms that I did not know in my router set up section) but NordVPN people were so nice and patient.

I'm pretty new to VPN world so I am not so good at recognizing what can be expected from different providers but NordVPN suits my current needs. The set up was easy and quick. I was ready to connect in no time. Some issues that I had regarding the speed were resolved by their support in a single chat.

NordVPN works great. A lot servers work with p2p, lots of servers to choose from in general. Had to make a slight adjustment to my set up to view Netflix, but my experience with customer support was very delightful. 5 stars - hope that they keep this quality for all 3 years I have left of their service.

I am a long time user, but have never before shown my appreciation for the service properly. It sure does make me feel safe online, and I guess that is what matters the most - if you trust your service. During these 2 years I have been in contact with customer support a few times and their care and knowledge made me feel at ease even if I was worried. The fact that new app updates and whole new features are being published so often proves that NordVPN is serious about their commitment to their customers.

Bought it last week, must say I am pretty happy. Of course it is my first VPN, but after getting in contact with customer support I am quite sure I am here to stay - their technical expertise is simply mind blowing, right now I am convinced they could set up VPN on my toaster if I wanted, the only question I have is will it work with IKEv2 or only PPTP!

I'm a new NordVPN user. After years of dealing with another VPN provider customer support for many issues, I was very impressed with the short time it took to respond to my questions for NordVPN. Customer care is just excellent, and can't say anything bad about speed - it's just a few percent decrease.

I can say that I have not noticed any meaningful performance degradation at all with NordVPN and its nice to have the added security. I use it on my iphone as well (up to 6 devices). The only downside is that some sites will detect that you are on a different PC each time you log in (like financial sites) so you have to go through additional verification. This is due to the IP address rotation. I definitely recommend NordVPN

Used purevpn and it was a joke! Every time I logged onto one of their sites, I ran at least 5 leak tests! Every time it showed my internet provider included in the results! So much for security. Also, whenever I downloaded anything, my firewall went nuts blocking intrusions! Spent a total of 16 hours with them trying to resolve dns leaks & nothing worked! Express VPN is sooooooo sweet, no leaks, fast downloads & my firewall has no intrusion blocks! I've already had 2 warnings from my internet provider regarding downloads using pure VPN. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

I've been using PrivateVPN for a couple of months now, switched from PIA who's port forwarding didn't ever seem to work and their support took ages to reply and weren't much help. The service is impeccable in itself, with myriads of supported operating systems, both with their own custom client and with free and open source clients. What really stands out however is the level of support they offer. Not only do they help you solve the problem and answer the questions you have, but they do it at all hours of any day - day or night, Sundays and weekdays, even holidays - you name it. I've never waited more than a couple of hours to get help, even when I've contacted them way past bedtime.

I've been using PrivateVPN for a couple of months now, switched from PIA who's port forwarding didn't ever seem to work and their support took ages to reply and weren't much help. The support for PrivateVPN has been excellent, and their LiveChat means I get help if I need it when I need it not days late and the Speeds are excellent too - I can't see me needing to change providers again

Thank you Kevin and Manish for patiently handling my case. I would recommend Private VPN for its excellent customer service, good pricing and easy use.

The product works well but the service makes it that much better. Would recommend to anyone looking for a VPN. They gave me a trial subscription with no issues and the product does exactly what I want it to do.

I tested many VPN clients and this one is the best so far. And the customer service is very responsive, fast to reply and efficient. Kudos.

I have used Private VPN for many years, and have always been satisfied. Speed is great, usability simple. Great flexibility in allowing to connect to the country you want. Good options for auto-connect/disconnect. The service has been excellent and uptime superb.

Our Thoughts

CyberGhost Pro is a good but not perfect VPN service. Its software is very easy-to-use while also being fully featured, and 5 simultaneous connections is good. Being based in Romania and keeping (almost) no logs is also a big draw, as is the superb connection speed results to nearby servers. CyberGost Pro undoubtedly has its flaws, but it also has enough cool features to make it a compelling choice for many.

Cyberghost is not good tried for their 7 day trial, when installed said it had expired. I Mentioned this to Support Team, and they told me that happens if i installed on my pc before, which i havent even been with the vpn provider idiots. Cut long story short i brought this vpn for $11.95 the software took 35 seconds to come on desktop and connecting to server took 45 seconds to connect mostly said server cant connect even though tried servers in my own country n said coudn't connect, now going through process having my money back as it within 30 day period. Conclusion: would i recommend them, i certainly would not recommend them at all. Support useless, Software is slow to load (even tho i have a quad core pc 16gb ram) and servers took forever to connect. only positive is there features and they dont keep logs, but i defo wont be going with them again 🙁

This VPN is fantastic for streaming services. Although it does get some criticism (for not providing the kind of privacy levels that some of the VPNs higher in this list have), the reality is that for most people's streaming needs PureVPN it perfect. What's more, this VPN is extremely cheap. Best of all it unblocks US Netflix!

If you are looking for a VPN that will unblock content from all over the world, and provide adequate levels of privacy, with no usage logs this VPN is worth considering. However, do be aware that people do sometimes have problems using the money back guarantee: so be sure to read the stipulations carefully. It is curious how we have had such a different experiences. My connections on multiple servers with PureVPN have been fast and reliable on a wired and LTE network for Windows 10, Blackberry and Microsoft Phone. Occasionally, a server will not like a particular protocol for connection but switching to a different protocol with similar security solves the problem. For the home computer, I generally prefer SSTP which seems to be the most stable and fastest encrypted connection. I have used PureVPN for torrents and general security and now I pretty much leave it turned on for everything. The speed penalty for encryption is maybe 5% of my maximum speed. Occasionally on my smartphones, I will turn the VPN off and on again if I hit an issue with a page loading. If I am traveling, I will select a default VPN server closest to my travel destination. A major factor in my decision to pick PureVPN was its ability to work with all computer and mobile platforms. In that area, the service has been a really winner.

Been using them for more than a year now with no issues. Good connection speeds, good price and I've never had issues with streaming media (touch wood). I would not recommend them if you're looking for a hide-my-tracks solution, but if you want to bypass country restrictions for media streaming etc, this is a great service.

I bought a lifetime subscription to purevpn. So I'm stuck with them. but that is not a bad thing. I look on this website and see a lot of negativity. sure pure isn't perfect and I have had issues but I'm always able to get around them. once the connection wasn't working so I switched to the old software for a month or two and now I am back on the updated software and it works great. I use it for privacy and security it works great. Speed could be faster you just kind of have to find which servers are the quickest. I love all the features. I don't know why but I find it fun to look through the features and see what they are adding to keep me secure. they have added better DNS leak protection. Also the ability to choose your protocol is awesome. finally this is one vpn service that doesn't store any logs. ok well that is a little wrong. They store logs of when you connected and disconnected, bandwith, and your name. But they do not store what you are doing. and if in some scenario they were ordered by a court to give over what you were doing they would however since they don't store those things all they could give is how long you were on and how much bandwith you used. Pretty sweet. You can read about their policies on their website. since they are based in Hong Kong they are not required to store data logs. LOVE PUREVPN

Globally very disappointing, in particular as far as using the service through a router is concerned. It is not flexible, it does not work as advertised and the speed is agonisingly slow. The technical support suggests explorations and tweaks that are really technical, time consuming and complicate the use of the service. I can not recommend PureVPN at all. Do not succumb to attractive promotions and get stuck like me for long term, because after the short 7 days refund window you will discover that the service is really not up to the level advertised and they will refuse to refund even after acknowledging they let you down...

          Ralph

I signed up for a "Lifetime" subscription through one of the stacksocial websites and have now been with PurePVN for about two years. I was very happy for about the first year or so, but I haven't even bothered to use it for the last several months, and the speeds have dropped dramatically (I'm in Australia, if that makes any difference? I doubt it) and their online tech support was so ineffectual that all they do is copy/paste stock advice from their own website, even though it's irrelevant to what I was asking about - the speed is only one of the many issues I've been facing. *** What's even more concerning is that PureVPN has obviously been spamming their own PCMag review page lately, judging by all the positive comments suddenly flooding in - most of them are from brand new Disqus accounts, from which there is only 1 comment ever having been made - the pro-PureVPN comment - a sure sign that they are fake reviews. I've been trying to counter this by pointing out what's obviously happening, as well as by posting there about the issues with the service, the FBI issue, etc. *** PureVPN then emailed me, offering me a FREE lifetime subscription - they may have recognised my Disqus username on PCMag, since they also use Disqus on their own user forum (where I have criticized them in the past, although as it's moderated, most of my critical posts there never got published). I should point out that they didn't actually mention anything in the email about my PCMag comments, but then they wouldn't be that silly would they - instead, they framed the email as an apology for all the problems I'd been having. But since I haven't used their service or even had any tech support requests or complaints for a couple of months, there really can be no other explanation. It was an empty offer in any case, since I already have the lifetime subscription! Avoid, Avoid, AVOID PureVPN!

Pure is the only vpn I have tried that lets me get on to BBC iplayer every time and I have used, PIA, Air and Express.

          Ralph Ellis

Had for a month now, really no issues, and consistently decent service for my needs and the price. I have not had any of the issues mentioned here, and my experience with their support was quick and easy. No billing issues, no double charges. It's a VPN not a magic carpet.

          Sucks, can't even trick Netflix

          Jean Luc

Globally very disappointing, in particular as far as using the service through a router is concerned. It is not flexible, it does not work as advertised and the speed is agonisingly slow. The technical support suggests explorations and tweaks that are really technical, time consuming and complicate the use of the service. I can not recommend PureVPN at all. Do not succumb to attractive promotions and get stuck like me for long term, because after the short 7 days refund window you will discover that the service is really not up to the level advertised and they will refuse to refund even after acknowledging they let you down...

          Very Bad!

          Useful Netflix Guides

Curious to learn more about using a VPN with Netflix? Our guides contain a wealth of information to answer any queries that you have.

VPN for Netflix Troubleshooting and error messages

Why and how does Netflix block VPNs?

          What is a Netflix Proxy?

Notflix: Netflix Libraries Around the World

Why do I need a VPN?

A VPN is a technology that creates a private network over a public one (the internet). This means you can connect to a server in the US and gain access to the complete Netflix catalog on any platform. It doesn’t matter where you live – with a VPN, all the extra content can be unlocked.

If you would like to know more about using a VPN to appear in another country, check out our guide to geo-spoofing with a VPN.

The key features of a Netflix VPN

To be an effective VPN for Netflix, a service must have a server that is fast enough to stream HD content. Many VPNs have overloaded servers which can lead to buffering.

Will I get banned for watching Netflix with a VPN?

No. Because you have a Netflix account, you are entitled to access the content.

The company says it may cut customers off for unblocking a foreign catalog because it is a breach of their Terms of Use; however, this has never happened. They know you are a paying customer and doesn’t want to lose your custom. That is why Netflix focuses on blocking VPN IP addresses only.

          Fixing the Netflix proxy error

If the VPN’s IP address is blocked by Netflix you will encounter what is known as “the Netflix proxy error”. You will receive the error message:

          Oops, something went wrong…

          Streaming Error
You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again. For more help, visit netflix.com/proxy.

          Netflix proxy error message

This means your VPN has been rumbled. If you use a premium service, you should contact their support team to find out what solutions they have in place. Be warned, unblocking Netflix takes a lot of resources for VPN companies. If you are having constant issues, it might be worth switching to one of the providers recommended above. These services are dedicated to helping their users unblock the main Netflix libraries.

Check out our Netflix Proxy Error Messages Guide for more information.

How much extra content do you get when you unblock Netflix?

It’s no secret that unblocking Netflix US is the Holy Grail for most VPN users. According to our recent “Notflix” study, the US market is able to access over 2,000 more titles than the next biggest library – Canada.

          Netflix Libraries: By the numbers

Netflix Library Number of Titles Difference with Netflix US Price
          United States 5665 0 $7.99

          United Kingdom 2967 -2698 $7.73
          Australia 2044 -3621 $7.91
          France 1928 -3737 $9.39
