5 Best VPNs for Amazon Prime in 2018

If you purchase a subscription to Amazon Prime, you probably expect access to all of the Prime video content. Unless you live in the good ol' US of A, you will find that’s not the case. Like many TV streaming services, Amazon Prime is home to a plethora of geo-restricted content – primarily content in the US that’s not available elsewhere. Fortunately, there is a solution: an Amazon Prime VPN.

Why do I need a VPN?

An Amazon Prime VPN or Virtual Private Network is a digital service that lets you spoof your location, thus accessing content, like Amazon Prime, from different countries.

For example, if you want access to Amazon’s geo-restricted world of Spanish soap operas, all you have to do is connect to a VPN server in Spain. Additionally, VPNs can also provide you with privacy and security via encryption – something necessary in today’s digital world of threats and vulnerabilities.

Furthermore, using an Amazon VPN can help with a variety of other things like avoiding government surveillance, ISP censorship and protecting yourself from hackers when online. For more information on the benefits of VPNs, visit our VPN Guide for Beginners.

What can I do with a VPN for Amazon Prime?

Your Amazon Prime VPN is good for a variety of things – not just unblocking Amazon Prime. To start, it can be used to unblock other geo-restricted services like US Netflix, Hulu and Spotify. When you use a VPN, you’re holding the key to a world of geo-restricted content. To find out exactly how a VPN unblocks content, check out our guide to geo-spoofing with a VPN.

Amazon VPNs are also used to enhance your digital security and privacy. This helps with avoiding surveillance tactics put in place by governments and ISPs. It also helps with internet censorship.

Are VPNs legal?

Yes, VPNs are legal. VPN technology is not only used by individuals for personal use, but also by businesses for commercial use. VPNs can be used to secure a business’s data or to keep traveling employees safe when connecting to public WiFi hotspots.

Want to stay safe when you're out and about? Check out our best VPNs for WiFi hotspots.

That being said, committing a crime - such as torrenting copyrighted material - under the protection of a VPN is still illegal. As such, you should be prepared to face the consequences, should you get caught. If you are concerned about your privacy when using a VPN, our most secure VPN guide will make for an interesting reading. Check out our Best VPN for torrent sites guide.

While it's not illegal to use Amazon Prime from a different location, it is in breach of Amazon's terms of service and the company takes active measures to prevent people using VPNs to access regional content.

I got ExpressVPN yesterday to use with Amazon Prime, and it worked! Now this morning (the next day) it's not. I've tried multiply locations and all seems to be identified as proxies and won't play the video. What VPN works with Amazon Prime?

Hi Jonas, First contact ExpressVPN's support team. It is very likely they are already working on a solution. The other VPNs listed above should work, but please be aware this is a cat-and-mouse game.

This is late December 2017. I have tried 2 VPNs and contacted a third. The first one I installed claimed UK Amazon Prime availability in France but didn't actually provide that access from the go-get. I contacted another who advertised Amazon Prime availability but when quizzed said they couldn't do it - something about Amazon being more aggressive these days. The third VPN claimed they could get Amazon ..... and they did for 1 evening. Amazon quickly closed the connection. 2 days later the VPN regained access to Amazon for 1 afternoon before Amazon shut it down. The larger point is "Do VPNs really work?". If Amazon, Netflix and even my insurance company can see I am using a VPN, what's the point?

Hi vic, Whether or not VPNs are being blocked by Amazon Prime is a cat-and-mouse game, and it does seem that Amazon is being more aggressive with its blocking at the moment. On the larger point, please see our VPNs for Beginners guide for how VPNs work, including a discussion on what they can and cannot be expected to do. Websites will always be able to see the IP address you connect from. If that website knows the IP address belongs to a VPN service, it can block it. Your real IP is still hidden from that website, your ISP (and governmnet) still don't know what you get up to online, and WiFi hackers will still be unable to access your data. Most good VPNs usually find a way around these geo-blocks (for example by refreshing their IP stores or using fancy DNS routing), but as I say, it is a cat-and-mouse game.

Hi Bob, At the time of publication, VyprVPN had been working with Amazon Prime Video. We will remove it from the list while we investigate. We're sorry for the trouble this may have caused you - we strive to keep these lists as up to date as possible. We will contact VyprVPN to see if they are working on regaining access to Amazon Prime Video. In the meantime, VyprVPN has a 30-day money-back guarantee that you can take advantage of, if you find yourself unsatisfied with the service. Cheers, Katrina
