You may find it difficult to keep track of the PutLocker web address. That URL has changed several times over the past few years. Its addresses have included putlocker.com and putlocker.bz, which the British police seized in 2014. The site ran as putlocker.is for a couple of years, then switched to putlocker.today and putlocker9.com for two months at the end of 2016. It later switched back to putlocker.is, with a redirect through to putlocker.ch. A court in Luxembourg closed down the putlocker.ch address in February 2017. The service then went back to putlocker.is. In March 2017, PutLocker switched its address to putlockertv.is and then settled on putlocker.rs, which is a Serbian address, and putlockerhd.is, which is in Iceland.

The PutLocker offices are actually in Vietnam. Its servers are based in Switzerland. You will have to keep your ear to the ground to keep track of future PutLocker address changes.

The authorities in the UK, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the US are particularly keen to stamp out access to PutLocker. If you reside in any of those countries, you had better take care when accessing the service.

In the UK and North America, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) happily block access to unauthorized distributors of copyrighted material. However, there is a way to access PutLocker without your ISP, the police, the FBI, or any copyright holder group from knowing what you are up to - use a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

You can discover more about the workings of VPNs and how they keep your PutLocker habit secret below. First, we've researched the five best VPNs for PutLocker, so let's start by looking at those.

Avoid PutLocker Prosecution

A VPN will prevent anyone from knowing which systems your computer is connecting to. The VPN program on your computer encrypts the packets that leave it before they go onto the internet. Each encrypted packet is put inside a carrier packet that is addressed to the VPN server. With all of the services in our list, you get a choice of server location. The one you choose will receive all of your internet traffic until you disconnect from the VPN service.

Thus nobody can see that you are communicating with the PutLocker server. The VPN server does it for you. The connection between the VPN server and the PutLocker computer is not "tunneled." However, the return address on those communications is that of the VPN server, not yours. So, even on this final stretch, snoopers, spooks, and network providers can't tell that the stream of video heading out of PutLocker is actually destined for your computer.

This means there's no way you can be prosecuted for downloading from PutLocker when you use a VPN. Not even the owners and operators of the PutLocker computer can tell that you accessed it.

VPN Logging

Well, there is one way that the authorities and copyright lawyers could trace your contact with PutLocker. If they manage to trace connections to a VPN service, they just need to lean on the VPN company to get its activity logs. With this information, they could work out that the VPN had assigned the temporary IP address in the log of PutLocker connections to you at that time.

As such, you have to be careful to choose a VPN that it isn't going to squeal under the pressure. Even if that pressure is in the form of a court order.

There are three attributes of a VPN service that you must insist on to preserve your anonymity:

  1. Location in a country that has no data retention requirements
  2. No logs
  3. A feisty adherence to the principles of internet freedom and the rights of individuals

The VPNs on our list were all founded by people who have very strong political and philosophical commitments to freedom on the net.

The issue of logs is a little contentious. During a session, the VPN program has to keep track of which customer is using which temporary address. If it didn't, it wouldn't know which IP address to forward incoming responses to. Some VPN companies have been caught out keeping records of each user's connection times and data throughput. They claim that this information doesn't include the actual destination of each connection, so that wouldn't give the authorities the information that they need in order to know who was connected to PutLocker. The VPNs on our list do not keep those connection logs beyond the end of the customer's session.

Although there are many fine VPN services in the US, not one of them made it onto our list of PutLocker VPNs. That's because their desire to stay in business and out of jail makes their owners vulnerable to pressure from the US legal system. The VPNs that we recommend for PutLocker are all based in countries that have almost no laws relating to data services. Each of these companies has openly declared that if its government ever introduced data retention laws, it would move to another country.

PutLocker VPN

Be very, very careful when selecting a VPN for PutLocker. Accessing PutLocker is just about the riskiest activity on the internet right now. The authorities all over the world are after PutLocker! The US Ambassador to Vietnam makes daily visits to that country's Minister of Information and Communications. You should probably keep your eye on the press for news of the arrest of PutLocker's owners. Make sure that your name doesn't get in the papers as well - use a VPN!

Best VPNs for PutLocker: Conclusion

Resist the temptation of free VPNs. Also, don't sign up to the first VPN that you hear about just because you're in a hurry. If you must continue to access PutLocker, make sure you use one of our recommended VPNs. All of these VPNs will keep you safe from prosecution.
