Top 5 cheap VPN services

Take a look at our in-depth guide below for a more detailed comparison of the best cheap VPNs.

1. CyberGhost

BestVPN.com Score 10 out of 10
Editor's Choice

CyberGhost is a highly reliable and low priced VPN that has been performing exceptionally well in 2018. What’s more, its servers are lightning fast and will permit data intensive tasks like streaming in HD. This means CyberGhost is excellent for unblocking content from abroad.

Encryption is provided with superbly implemented OpenVPN (our recommended protocol), and the privacy policy is watertight. The VPN can be used on five simultaneous devices, and the firm has live chat support (though it isn’t 24/7). With so much on offer and a 30-day money-back guarantee, CyberGhost VPN is well worth checking out.

2. NordVPN

BestVPN.com Score 9.8 out of 10

Our NordVPN review has consistently rated these guys as a top VPN provider year after year. The reason being that it is a highly secure service that is packed with security features such as DNS leak protection, stealth mode, a killswitch, double-hop and VPN into Tor.

Add to that a zero-logs policy and well implemented OpenVPN encryption (military grade) and you start to understand why. The result is a reliable and trustworthy VPN that is good enough to do even the most data intensive of tasks (such as streaming in HD). With NordVPN you get freedom and digital privacy, and users are free to do anything they wish (including torrenting).

4. PureVPN

BestVPN.com Score 9.1 out of 10

This VPN is fantastic for streaming. Although it does get some criticism (for not providing the kind of privacy levels that some of the VPNs higher in this list have), the reality is that for most people's streaming needs PureVPN it perfect. What's more, this VPN is extremely cheap.

If you are looking for a VPN that will unblock content from all over the world, and provide adequate levels of privacy, with no usage logs this VPN is worth considering. However, do be aware that people do sometimes have problems using the money back guarantee: so be sure to read the stipulations carefully. If value for money is important to you - this VPN is worth a try!

5. PrivateInternetAccess

BestVPN.com Score 8.8 out of 10

Private Internet Access is a well-established VPN that is both secure and private. It is a service that is often recommended because of its zero-logs policy. In addition to fantastic privacy levels, it is also incredibly cheap. However, it doesn't unblock as much content as PrivateVPN.

Customer care has improved significantly since last year, with wait times for responses arriving in less than half a day. It is based in the US, which might not be for everyone. This cheap VPN is perfect for privacy, but doesn’t unblock everything.

Why do I need a VPN?

Most people aren’t aware that IP addresses are logged at visited sites and that most Internet Service Providers keep records of browsing activity. Nobody likes being snooped on, regardless of what they get up to online. A VPN can help hide your online footprint from prying eyes and add an extra layer of security, protecting you from hackers.

The main benefits of a VPN include:

  • Enhanced security - All of your data is protected from hackers via a secure connection to the VPN.
  • Online privacy – A VPN allows you to browse the web without your ISP finding out what you are up to.
  • Unblock the web – Access blocked websites and geo-restricted services like Netflix or BBC iPlayer.

How much does a VPN cost?

VPNs are generally available at a monthly fee as part of a subscription. The average cost of a VPN service is around $5 a month, or around 50$ when purchased annually. Of course, the longer subscription you purchase, the bigger discount you will receive.

There are also free VPN services available; however, these typically come with ads and lack the reliability or commitment to privacy that a paid VPN offers. A free version also may not offer unlimited bandwidth and might cap out after visiting a few websites.

VPN price comparison

Some VPNs also offer lifetime subscriptions, which might be a good deal if you are invested in your privacy.

Are VPN lifetime subscriptions worth it?

There are lifetime VPN subscriptions that are sold for as low as $30. That means, you pay $30 as a one-off and then enjoy the VPN for as long as you want. The actual price could be somewhere around $300, but various discounts drastically reduce the price.

While a lifetime VPN subscription sounds like a great deal on paper, the reality is that VPN companies need to have a sustainable business model to support launching new servers and keeping the existing ones properly maintained.

Instead of a lifetime VPN subscription, you should consider a trustworthy, cheap VPN, such as the ones listed here.

Are budget VPNs fast?

People who specifically desire the fastest VPN speeds of all will want to look at our fastest VPN guide. Having said that, the two providers at the top of this list provide unbelievably fast connection speeds considering the cost. So yes, you can get a fast, cheap VPN.

What's more, all of our recommended cheap VPNs have a massive number of servers - so if one VPN server seems slow, just connect to another!

Using a cheap VPN for torrenting

Do you enjoy downloading your favorite shows or movies via torrenting? A cheap VPN is great option for protecting you from your ISP or government snooping on your P2P activity.

Want to avoid copyright violation notices when torrenting? All of the cheap VPNs listed on this page support P2P/torrenting while connected to their servers.

What else can I use a VPN for?

Other than protecting your online identity and securing your data, a VPN is also a great tool for unblocking geo-restricted websites and streaming services like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Hulu.

For example, the online Netflix library varies greatly depending on where you are accessing the service from. You can use a VPN to connect to a different country and access a superior catalog of TV and movies than the one in the country you are currently located in.

For more information about using a VPN with the streaming services mentioned above, see the guides below:

Trust.zone actually works and speed is good, zero problems. Did a test with user name/password without using any VPN app on my phone. Geoblocked pages worked in February 2018. Also tried pureVPN as they cost only $1.15/month now. But their IP in their 2GB free version is certainly all geoblocked for the nations I tested (UK, SE). Germany was not available for free with pureVPN, but assume it would anyway fail. Trust.Zone seems to work everywhere I tested it.

NordVPN is cheap as CyberGhost but it allows up to six connections and probably it's more accurate to compare it to expressvpn. IMHO NordVPN is #1 at the moment

The listed VPN providers are good but not cheap. Privatoria is cheaper, you should consider adding it to the list
