5 Best Skype VPN Providers in 2019 That Work in UAE, China & Elsewhere

Once upon a time, Skype was secure because it provided peer-to-peer (P2P) encrypted messaging. Sadly, those days are long gone. That's why so many people are turning to a Skype Virtual Private Network (VPN) in order to use the messenger service securely.

Some governments force Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block Skype because they don’t want citizens using Video over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. The good news is that with a VPN, anybody, anywhere, can access Skype: even in nations where Skype is restricted.

A VPN for Skype allows you to pretend to be in a different country. This allows you to bypass government restrictions and use Skype messenger to do voice and video calls. In addition, a reliable Skype VPN provides subscribers with end-to-end encryption. This stops ISPs, governments, and other nefarious actors from snooping in on messages and conversations.

A VPN service is the most versatile and liberating online service available. So, let’s dive right in and take a look at the best VPNs for Skype in 2019.

Best VPNs for Skype: Summary

1. ExpressVPN

BestVPN.com Score 9.8 out of 10
Editor's Choice

ExpressVPN is the best VPN for Skype for several reasons. Firstly, it has servers in 94 countries. That means there’s always a country close to you from which to use Skype. This permits you to get the best possible connection speeds, no matter where you are.

ExpressVPN has pro features like stealth mode, Domain Name System (DNS) leak protection, and a kill switch. These help to protect your privacy and overcome ISP throttling in places that try to block VPN use. In addition, ExpressVPN has extremely well implemented military grade encryption, and a privacy policy that is watertight.

The software is easy to use, completely reliable, and available for all popular platforms. It can also be used on three devices simultaneously. Plus, ExpressVPN has 24/7 live chat support and a 30-day money-back guarantee to allow you to test the service.

2. NordVPN

BestVPN.com Score 9.6 out of 10

Our user reviews for NordVPN show it’s a favorite among people who value security features. It provides access to stealth mode, a kill switch and DNS leak protection – but also has extras like double encryption and VPN into Tor. With strong OpenVPN encryption and a zero logs policy, this all round VPN has everything needed to keep you secure, no matter where you are.

Speeds are also great with this reliable VPN, which won’t let you down while video calling on Skype. While the double encryption feature can slow you down a bit, this isn’t strictly necessary for making Skype calls. An excellent VPN with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

3. PrivateVPN

BestVPN.com Score 9.5 out of 10

PrivateVPN is a zero-logs Swedish provider that features a firewall-based kill switch and a per-app kill switch, along with full IPv4 and IPv6 DNS leak protection, all important features for a Skype VPN. However, PrivateVPN does not include a stealth mode, so you should consider one of the other VPNs on this list if your local ISP throttles or completely blocks VPN traffic.

If you use Skype on your handheld (like me) you should know that PrivateVPN has very good mobile apps. With servers in 56 countries the network's size is adequate, but less than some of the other Skype VPNs in this list. You can take advantage of this provider's 30-day money back guarantee to thoroughly test whether this network will server your needs.

4. PrivateInternetAccess

BestVPN.com Score 9.2 out of 10

Private Internet Access has servers in 25 countries. While this provider is a lot smaller than ExpressVPN, it's also much cheaper. PIA is fine with its customers using the network for protection while downloading copyrighted entertainment and it keeps no logs. You get an allowance that enables you to connect five devices at once, so this might be a good choice for a family.

PIA uses strong encryption and its security features include automatic WiFi protection. You get decent speeds with this system and the VPN is adept at getting around access restrictions at streaming sites. The company is based in the US but keeps zero logs. An excellent VPN for Skype.

5. Buffered

BestVPN.com Score 8.9 out of 10

Buffered is a VPN that works well with Skype. They have servers in 42 countries. While that is fewer than some other Skype VPNs on this list, they are placed extremely well, allowing you to avoid most blocks and restrictions. Unfortunately, they do not have a Stealth/Cloaked mode. This means you'll need to try one of the other VPNs if your government or local ISP throttles or blocks uncloaked VPN traffic.

The Buffered software includes other important features such as DNS leak protection and OpenVPN encryption. In addition, Buffered is capable of open port detection. This gives you the ability to log onto WiFi at hotels without a password. The service also delivers close to 100% up time, along with lightning fast connection speeds.

Finally, thanks to a 30-day money-back guarantee, it is also possible to test this VPN to make sure you enjoy it. A fantastic VPN for both home use and use on public WiFi, which will allow high-quality video chat in Skype.

What Is a VPN for Skype?

A VPN is an awesome online service that permits you to achieve two things. Firstly, a VPN allows you to conceal your IP address and pretend to be in a different country. This is achieved by connecting to a remote VPN server. Once the connection is established, you appear to be in the chosen foreign country.

This is awesome because it allows you to overcome local censorship imposed by ISPs on behalf of the government. In addition, it allows you to bypass geo-restrictions. This means you can access websites and online services that are usually locked to a particular nation.

Finally, a Skype VPN allows you to bypass website blocks enforced by local network administrators, such as schools, landlords, and workplaces.

In addition to unrivaled online freedom, a reliable and trusted VPN also provides military grade encryption. That encryption gives you digital privacy and stops anybody - including ISPs and the government - from being able to snoop on your web traffic. This is the perfect combination, because the privacy that encryption provides allows you to get the most out of pretending to be in a different country.

If you're new to VPNs and want to know more about how they work, we'd recommend checking out our VPN Beginners Guide which looks at the fundamentals so you can make a more informed decision.

What Is the Best VPN Service for Skype Calls?

All of the VPN services in this article have been selected because they are perfect for unblocking Skype. They are secure, thanks to well implemented military grade encryption, and they have strong privacy policies that we trust. In addition, they have fast servers located all over the globe . These allow their subscribers to do data intensive tasks like video conferencing and streaming in HD.

ExpressVPN has the best combination of privacy, ease of use, customer care, server locations, and speeds. There are well over 850 commercial VPNs on the market - and these are the best five for the job! As such, you will be safe going for whichever VPN most suits your needs. As such, feel free to try them all, and select the one that you prefer.

Typically, we don't recommend free VPNs. This is because when it comes to data intensive tasks, such as Skype's service, they leave a lot to be desired. However, if you're set on trying a free VPN with Skype, we'd recommend checking out our Free VPN page, where you will find the best free services available on the market.

How to Set up a VPN for Skype

Setting up a Skype VPN is extremely easy. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Select a VPN for Skype from this article. We recommend ExpressVPN because it is the best all-round service for use with Skype.
  2. Click through to the website and subscribe to your preferred VPN for Skype.
  3. Download and install the VPN software, remembering to get the right version for your device.
  4. Run the software and select OpenVPN encryption. You can also turn on the kill switch and stealth mode (to hide your VPN use from your ISP and make sure that you don’t leak any data if the VPN connection drops out).
  5. Select a server in a country that permits Skype use and click Connect.
  6. As soon as the VPN connects, you can access Skype from your foreign IP address.

Remember: your VPN also means that all your data is encrypted, giving you digital privacy.

Where Is Skype blocked or restricted?

Skype and VoIP services are blocked in a number of places, including:

  • Guyana
  • Kuwait
  • Libya
  • North Korea
  • Oman
  • Qatar
  • Syria
  • UAE

In addition, Skype suffers some problems in these localities:

  • Egypt – Skype is blocked during times of political unrest
  • Iran – ISP throttling is known to make Skype unusable at times
  • Jordan – Skype and VoIP services are blocked
  • Mexico – Some ISPs block VoiP services, including Skype
  • Myanmar – Skype is restricted and has special permissions
  • Pakistan – Users must pay to use Skype and it is expensive
  • Panama – Users must pay a government Skype tax
  • Syria – Highly limited access to Skype
  • Tunisia – Availability is volatile, like in Egypt (political reasons)
  • Vietnam – Access to Skype is limited (coffee shops use VPNs to give people access!)
  • Russia – Government and telecommunication services are working together to try to ban VoIP services
  • Venezuela - Some ISPs are known to be blocking Skype because they have private VoIP services

Skype Won’t Work When Connected to VPN

Unfortunately, in some places ISPs are required to restrict IP addresses associated with VPNs. In addition, places like Iran are known to throttle traffic that appears to be encrypted by a VPN. This can make the traffic so slow that it is impossible to make a VoIP call.

If the VPN server is being blocked by the ISP, the best thing is to contact the VPN directly. It can then provide you with a specific server, or a dedicated server for the job. If ISP throttling is happening via a firewall, the answer is to use the VPN's stealth mode. Stealth mode disguises VPN traffic as regular https. As such, if you live somewhere that restricts VPN use, be sure to select a VPN that has stealth mode.

What Else Can I Do with a Skype VPN?

By allowing you to pretend to be abroad, a VPN gives you complete internet freedom. It allows you to overcome local restrictions, which means that you can access censored websites and services such as Skype. In addition, you can use a VPN to overcome blocks placed by local network administrators. This allows you to access websites that are usually blocked.

Perhaps the best part of having a VPN, however, is that you can overcome geo-restrictions. Doing so allows you to access online content and services from foreign countries. For TV addicts, this means watching BBC iPlayer, Channel 4, Australian TV, or US cable channels and streams such as HBO, Fox, and so forth.

For people who love sports, a VPN opens up a whole world of possibilities. It lets you watch live tournaments and competitions from all over the world! In the end, what you can do with a VPN is practically limitless. If the VPN has a server in the country that you are interested in, you can unblock it!

Skype VPN: Conclusion

When it comes to video messaging and video conferencing, Skype is probably the first thing that pops into mind. With around 300 million active monthly users, the service is insanely popular. In this guide, we've revealed the five best VPN services for Skype.

These VPNs have everything you need to do video calls on Skype securely. They have watertight privacy policies and strong military grade encryption. These VPNs also have fast servers located all over the world, allowing you to do video conferencing without the signal getting too slow and cutting out.

For using Skype, our top recommendation is ExpressVPN because it is at the top of its game. However, our four other recommended VPNs also provide an outstanding service for Skype.

These VPNs for Skype are all trusted and reliable. They have close to 100% uptime and offer a choice of servers in many locations around the world. With that in mind, you are free to select any of these outstanding Skype VPN services. As such, go ahead and choose a VPN for Skype with confidence, and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Apart from Skype, one can also have a look at alternative tools like webex, R-HUB web video conferencing servers, gomeetnow, gotomeeting etc. for all your online meeting needs. They work well.

This is from the CyberGhost website: Blocked by Skype After Microsoft took over Skype more and more of our servers got blocked by the Skype backend servers, nowadays nearly our complete IP pool. Currently there is no way for a user to use Skype via CyberGhost.

In term of access,I don't know any ISP that blocked Skype for customers but in other hand upload speed in Iran is very restricted ( 512kb to 1024kb :/). This made Skype calls ( especially video calls ) very problematic.
