1. ExpressVPN

Editor's Choice

ExpressVPN is not only an excellent VPN for Hulu, but an excellent VPN for streaming video content all around. It boasts some of the fastest speeds on the market, its app works brilliantly on every device, and it downloads in an instant. What’s more, it has dozens of servers in both the US and Japan. The one caveat of ExpressVPN is its cost, which is admittedly above-average. However, we think that you’ll find it’s more than worth the price tag. If you don’t agree with us, that’s alright, too – it has a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you’re in no danger of losing cash should you wish to give it a go.

2. NordVPN

BestVPN.com Score 9.8 out of 10
Visit Site

NordVPN is another great choice for accessing Hulu. It has multiple servers in Japan and the US, so you can access whichever version of Hulu you like. It’s also available on all desktop and mobile operating systems, as well as routers and gaming systems, so you can watch content on whichever device you want! The major downside of NordVPN is that its speeds could use a little work. However, they’re sacrificed for increased security and bulletproof encryption, so more privacy-conscious users may think it’s worth it. Don’t let its slightly slower speed scare you off from giving NordVPN a go, though – its connections are reliable and optimized for streaming, and you won’t notice much lag (if any).

IPVanish is a reputable VPN provider that offers its users speed, security, and reliability. If you decide to sign up for IPVanish to watch Hulu outside the US, you can do so on both your computer and smartphone, thanks to its two simultaneous connections policy. IPVanish is a little cheaper than ExpressVPN, but still costlier than the majority of VPN services that we review. Still, with all the features the provider offers – including the all-important seven-day return policy – it’s good value for money.

4. PrivateVPN

PrivateVPN is a zero-logs Swedish provider. It features both a firewall-based system kill switch and a per-app kill switch, which pretty neat. Full IPv4 and IPv6 DNS leak protection is also built-in to its client. We have been particularly impressed by PrivateVPN’s high level of customer service, which even features remote installation for technophobes! Up to a generous 6 simultaneous devices are permitted, and port forwarding plus HTTPS and SOCKS5 proxies are a nice bonus. With a 30-day no-quibble money back guarantee, why not give PrivateVPN a try?

Why do I need a VPN?

A VPN is a technology that allows you to do a great many things. You can:

  • Hide what you get up to on the internet from others
  • Get around blocks and other forms of censorship
  • Appear to be in another country to access services such as US Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
  • Download and file share safely
  • Use public WiFi hotspots safely and securely

You connect to a VPN server using strong encryption which prevents your ISP, government, or WiFi hackers, from seeing your data. The VPN server also acts as an intermediary between you and the internet so your ISP cannot see what you do online and websites cannot see your real IP address. If you connect to a VPN server in another location you look like you are in that location. This is great for accessing services that are restricted to just one country.

A hulu VPN is an excellent service to utilize in general – whether you simply want to watch hulu outside the US or Japan or improve your online environment overall.

Does hulu work with VPN services?

Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for services like hulu to block VPN traffic. For this reason, not all VPNs will unblock hulu. In order for VPN providers to keep services like hulu unblocked, they have to stay one step ahead and this costs money.

All the VPNs in this top five guide will let you watch hulu outside the US, Japan, or Canada without any trouble. The trick is to find the VPN providers that go the extra mile – the ones who continuously maintain the ability to unblock popular services.

For more information on unblocking other services, check out our specific guides below:

If you want to watch hulu, you have two options - use a recommended VPN or move to the United States. It's your call.

Does Express VPN work for Netflix as well and does it work in Australia?

Hi Amanda, ExpressVPN works for US Netflix (its IPs may occasionally get banned, but it always soon gets things working again). It also works just fine in Australia (and, indeed, runs servers there). I do not know if it works for Australian Netfix, though (but its 24/7 Live Chat support will be able to tell you this).

Is there any extra work around once installing one of these. I recently moved to Korea and downloaded express VPN and hulu says I'm running through a proxy vpn and will not allow me to play anything.

Hi Justin, Not really. These blocks are simple IP blocks of IPs known to belong to VPN providers. ExpressVPN works with US Netflix and BBC iPlayer, so it might be worth talking to it about this issue. If that fails, then try a less well-known VPN service or Smart DNS instead (Smart DNS is less likley to be blocked, but can be).
