All of our recommendations provide full unrestricted access to VPN servers that work with hulu, additionally they all have the following features.

  • Access hulu Japan or US: Our recommendations will unblock hulu US and hulu Japan from anywhere in the world.
  • Connection speeds: A VPN for hulu must be fast enough to let you stream in HD without buffering.
  • Server locations: A reliable hulu VPN must have servers in the countries where hulu is available. It also needs a choice of servers, to avoid congestion.

Below, you will find detailed comparisons of each VPN service alongside our expert summaries.

1. ExpressVPN

BestVPN.com Score 9.8 out of 10
Editor's Choice

ExpressVPN is not only an excellent VPN for Hulu, but an excellent VPN for streaming video content all around. It boasts some of the fastest speeds on the market, its app works brilliantly on every device, and it downloads in an instant. What’s more, it has dozens of servers in both the US and Japan.

The one caveat of ExpressVPN is its cost, which is admittedly above-average. However, we think that you’ll find it’s more than worth the price tag. If you don’t agree with us, that’s alright, too – it has a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you’re in no danger of losing cash should you wish to give it a go.

2. PrivateVPN

BestVPN.com Score 9.5 out of 10

PrivateVPN is a zero-logs Swedish provider. It features both a firewall-based system kill switch and a per-app kill switch, which pretty neat. Full IPv4 and IPv6 DNS leak protection is also built-in to its client.

We have been particularly impressed by PrivateVPN’s high level of customer service, which even features remote installation for technophobes! Up to a generous 6 simultaneous devices are permitted, and port forwarding plus HTTPS and SOCKS5 proxies are a nice bonus.

With a 30-day no-quibble money back guarantee, why not give PrivateVPN a try?

3. NordVPN

BestVPN.com Score 9.3 out of 10

NordVPN is another great choice for accessing Hulu. It has multiple servers in Japan and the US, so you can access whichever version of Hulu you like. It’s also available on all desktop and mobile operating systems, as well as routers and gaming systems, so you can watch content on whichever device you want!

The major downside of NordVPN is that its speeds could use a little work. However, they’re sacrificed for increased security and bulletproof encryption, so more privacy-conscious users may think it’s worth it. Don’t let its slightly slower speed scare you off from giving NordVPN a go, though – its connections are reliable and optimized for streaming, and you won’t notice much lag (if any).

4. IPVanish

BestVPN.com Score 9.2 out of 10

IPVanish is a reputable VPN provider that offers its users speed, security, and reliability. If you decide to sign up for IPVanish to watch Hulu outside the US, you can do so on both your computer and smartphone, thanks to its two simultaneous connections policy.

IPVanish is a little cheaper than ExpressVPN, but still costlier than the majority of VPN services that we review. Still, with all the features the provider offers – including the all-important seven-day return policy – it’s good value for money.

5. ProtonVPN

BestVPN.com Score 8.8 out of 10

ProtonVPN is the VPN brought to life by the creators of ProtonMail. This fully-featured VPN offers minimal logs for enhanced privacy, 5 simultaneous connections and a double VPN called Secure Core. Additionally, ProtonVPN provides blazing fast speeds on the 14 server locations they currently offer - which is ideal for Hulu users.

ProtonVPN also allows P2P activities on select servers and provides a kill switch, DNS leak protection, Bitcoin payments, excellent military-grade OpenVPN encryption and a free service if you feel like sampling before purchasing. The only downsides to ProtonVPN: Netflix and BBC iPlayer are blocked and customer support is a bit behind on replies.

Why do I need a VPN for hulu?

Hulu is not available internationally because it doesn't license its services anywhere but the US (and Japan where it is called happyon). A VPN allows you to watch the following on hulu from anywhere in the world. Even if you already have a hulu subscription; a VPN will come in handy if you go overseas on vacation or for work. :

  • TV Shows and seasons
  • Movies
  • Sport
  • Regional channels like HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and many more.

How to get hulu outside of the US and Japan

To access hulu from overseas follow these steps:

  1. Subscribe to one of the most suitable VPNs for hulu
  2. Download and install the VPN software
  3. Connect to a server in the US or Japan
  4. Navigate to the hulu website and subscribe
  5. Remember to connect to a server in the US or Japan each time you want to watch hulu

When you subscribe to a foreign hulu service you may require a local payment method. Luckily, you can do this using a virtual card or an online payment service. Alternatively, you could use a Hulu gift card. Top tip: Walmart’s online store sells these, the gift card is delivered via email so you can redeem it immediately.

How does a hulu VPN work?

When you subscribe to a VPN service,  you download its software. This software is used to connect to a VPN server. VPNs have a choice of servers for subscribers to connect to, by connecting to a server in a country where hulu is available (US or Japan) you can subscribe to hulu and watch more content than ever before.

Connection speed for streaming hulu

It's vital that a VPN service used to watch hulu has a fast connection speed. A VPN which can unlock hulu but is too slow to watch content would be pointless.

Below you can see the speeds needed to stream shows or live content from hulu:

Connection speedAverage quality
500 KbpsLowest streaming quality
1.5 MbpsAverage quality (up to 480p)
3 MbpsSD quality (480p or better)
5 MbpsHD quality (720p or better)
25 MbpsUltra HD quality (1080p or better)

Does hulu block VPNs?

Yes. Hulu does not want people circumventing the geo-restriction it enforces. For this reason, it regularly blocks IP addresses belonging to VPNs. Staying one step ahead of streaming service blocks takes a lot of time, money, and resources. That is why the vast majority of VPNs do not bother to unblock hulu anymore.

How does hulu block VPNs?

When a normal home IP address watches hulu, it is rare for more than one or two people to log in at the same time. When people from all over the world log onto a VPN server to watch hulu it becomes obvious that a VPN IP address is being used. This causes hulu to blacklist the VPN IP address, cutting off the VPN subscribers in the process.

Our recommended VPNs have all found ways to avoid this, preventing hulu from detecting a VPN is being used. This means subscribers can watch hulu whenever they like.

How to get around the hulu VPN block

Our recommended VPNs have all proven that they are able to keep providing access to hulu. These VPNs use a number of complex methods to beat the hulu VPN ban.

Here are some things to try if hulu isn’t working for you on your chosen VPN

Try a different server

The VPN might only unblock hulu on specific servers, so try a few.

Ask the VPN’s customer service team

If your VPN is supposed to work with hulu the easiest way to get it working is to ask the customer service team.

Clear your cookies

It is possible that hulu has placed cookies on your machine that are stopping you from gaining access. Clear the cookies in your browser by going to settings.

Disable geolocation settings in your browsers

Chrome and Firefox both let you disable geolocation settings. See our guide on disabling geo-location settings in your browser for more details.

Disable IPv6

IPv6 connections can result in IP and DNS leaks that will stop hulu from working. To disable IPv6 in Windows 10 follow these simple steps:

  1. In control panel open "Network and Sharing Center".
  2. In the Network and Sharing Center, click the option Change Adapter Settings, on the left-hand side.
  3. Right-click on the first Local Area Connection you see listed and go to Properties.
  4. Under the General tab, uncheck the option "Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6)".
  5. Apply the changes by clicking OK.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 for any remaining network connections.
  7. Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

Does Express VPN work for Netflix as well and does it work in Australia?

Hi Amanda, ExpressVPN works for US Netflix (its IPs may occasionally get banned, but it always soon gets things working again). It also works just fine in Australia (and, indeed, runs servers there). I do not know if it works for Australian Netfix, though (but its 24/7 Live Chat support will be able to tell you this).

Is there any extra work around once installing one of these. I recently moved to Korea and downloaded express VPN and hulu says I'm running through a proxy vpn and will not allow me to play anything.

Hi Justin, Not really. These blocks are simple IP blocks of IPs known to belong to VPN providers. ExpressVPN works with US Netflix and BBC iPlayer, so it might be worth talking to it about this issue. If that fails, then try a less well-known VPN service or Smart DNS instead (Smart DNS is less likley to be blocked, but can be).
