5 Best Netflix VPNs That Still Beat The VPN Ban in 2018

Hundreds of thousands of people improve Netflix using a VPN. With a VPN for Netflix, anybody can pretend to be in a different “region” to unblock more titles. All countries have a different Netflix library, but with a VPN you can access them all. Including US Netflix; which has the largest catalog in the world.

VPN for Netflix

Not every VPN is suitable for unblocking Netflix. A fast VPN that can keep up with HD video is a must, or you’ll constantly struggle with buffering. However, most commercial VPNs don’t unblock Netflix, so you need to pick a VPN that actually works.

Our reviewers test all 30 VPNs that unblock Netflix on a weekly basis. This article lists the 5 best Netflix VPNs, rated by comparing the attributes that separate them all. Remember, less than 5% of VPNs work with Netflix, and most of those aren’t fast enough for streaming. By picking from our expertly curated list, you won't be disappointed.

1. ExpressVPN

Best for the US, UK, Canada, and Netherlands Netflix libraries.
BestVPN.com Score 9.8 out of 10

Editor's Choice

ExpressVPN is considered best for Netflix right across the VPN industry, and for good reason. It has a number of servers that unblock Netflix catalogs: Toronto in Canada, 2 servers in the UK, 2 servers in the US, and a server in the Netherlands. While those are the "officially supported" Netflix catalogs with ExpressVPN - its customer service says that other catalogs do also work. Next, ExpressVPN is best for Netflix because it is extremely fast. Our speed tests show that it has average download speeds of around 45 Mbps on its Netflix servers: perfect for streaming in HD (1080p). What's more, Express has military grade encryption and an extremely simple setup and interface; meaning that it is a breeze to use (even for VPN nubes). In terms of price, ExpressVPN is fair - but pricier than some other options. However, you pay for what you get and with Express everything works at 100%. If you can't decide whether ExpressVPN is the right option for you; we strongly recommend giving it a test run. It has a 30-day money back guarantee that it always honors, and you can watch as much Netflix US for those 30-days and still get a full refund. No risk.

2. NordVPN

Best for the US, UK, and Netherlands Netflix libraries.
BestVPN.com Score 9.7 out of 10

NordVPN is a superb provider that unblocks many "most-wanted" Netflix libraries. Users can access the comprehensive US catalog with either its New York or Chicago server. In addition, NordVPN is capable of unblocking the popular UK and Netherlands region libraries. NordVPN excels when it comes to speeds, but is a bit slower than ExpressVPN. In our tests, Nord's Netflix servers averaged at 30 Mbps. This will permit HD streaming. With a low monthly cost (if purchased on the 24-month plan), this VPN can be purchased at a very low price point, which might tempt some people. On the other hand, it will cost a little bit more than ExpressVPN if purchased on the one-year subscription. That is food for thought - and reinforces ExpressVPN's position in first. As far as privacy is concerned, there is not much to set NordVPN and ExpressVPN apart: both offer OpenVPN encryption and can be trusted to give you a completely private online experience. Nord has a 30-day money back guarantee to test the service.

3. CyberGhost

Best for the US, UK, Germany, Denmark, and France Netflix libraries.
BestVPN.com Score 9.5 out of 10
Visit Site

CyberGhost "officially supports" more Netflix regions than any other VPN. In addition, it does some nifty things to give users better streaming speeds. When you connect to the US streaming server for Netflix, CyberGhost's parser system automatically connects you to one of 40 servers specially reserved for Netflix. This guarantees you always hit the server that is least congested. It also means they have plenty of servers should one get zapped by Netflix. Despite this system, it is worth noting that CyberGhost does not manage to provide speeds that are as fast as ExpressVPN. Our tests revealed that its Netflix servers average at around 30 Mbps; which is good enough for streaming in 1080p HD! Where digital privacy is concerned CyberGhost is strong, and it's OpenVPN encryption will guarantee that nobody is ever aware of what you do online. That means (like with the other VPNs in this guide) you can watch foreign Netflix without ever worrying about copyright issues. Finally, CyberGhost VPN provides a 45-day money back guarantee to trial the service.

4. PrivateVPN

Best for the ALL Netflix regions.
BestVPN.com Score 9.3 out of 10
Visit Site

PrivateVPN is a service that is praised regularly by subscribers. It is on our list because it provides official support for all Netflix regions (where it has servers). It is the only VPN to provide this level of support. How? By providing dynamic dedicated IP addresses to all its subscribers at no extra cost!! Where speeds are concerned, our tests revealed that PrivateVPN's Netflix servers average at around 23 Mbps. This is good enough for streaming in HD, but isn't quite as fast as we would hope for. On the other hand, PrivateVPN will get the job done and it has some of the best customer service teams in the industry. So, if you encounter any problems, you can always get help. PrivateVPN is an almost irresistible bargain (if purchased annually). And, because it has a 7-day free trial you can have a go on its servers and watch Netflix US for free for a whole week. If you're still not satisfied it has a 30-day money back guarantee. Finally, this VPN is true to its name and will guarantee that your ISP and Netflix never knows you watch foreign Netflix catalogs.

VPNArea is a able to unblock Netflix US, as well as various other Netflix catalogs from around the world. This Bulgarian provider pays attention to detail, providing high privacy levels, robust apps for all platforms, a no logs policy, and some of the best customer care in the industry (24/7 live chat). What is a VPN?

A VPN routes all of your internet traffic through a server that belongs to the VPN provider. All of your activity is shielded from the outside world. And because the traffic between your device and the server is encrypted, not even your internet service provider can see what you are doing.

What is a VPN for Netflix?

Why do I need a VPN to unblock Netflix?

If you are new to the world of VPNs (welcome!) you are probably wondering how they unblock Netflix. The video below precisely explains all the benefits of using a VPN with Netflix, let’s take a look:

To break down the benefits of a VPN for Netflix, you get:

  • Better value for money
  • Increase your viewing options
  • Watch Netflix when you are away on vacation
  • See content that is exclusive to specific nations

For more information, check out our guide: How to geo spoof with a VPN

How to use your Netflix VPN on all your devices

VPNs are extremely easy to use - so you honestly don’t need to worry. All our recommended VPNs have specialist software for all platforms. No matter whether you want to watch Netflix on Android, iPhone, Mac, Windows, or iPad - these VPNs are perfect.

How does a Netflix VPN work?

For more information:

Watching Netflix with a VPN router

If you want to watch Netflix on an Xbox, Playstation, Smart TV, or Apple TV; you may want to consider getting a router loaded directly with VPN. VPN routers automatically connect all the devices in your house to the remote VPN server:

VPN router with Netflix

For more information:

Is it illegal to use a VPN on Netflix?

It is not illegal to unblock a foreign Netflix catalog. This is because you are a paying Netflix subscriber. Content is only geo-restricted because of greedy content producers - not because of Netflix itself (which always shows Netflix Originals in all markets).

Because you are a paying customer, Netflix has no interest in banning you from its service. What’s more, there has never been a case of anyone being banned from Netflix for using a VPN.

Despite all of this, we generally prefer to advise that there might be some level of copyright infringement going on (when you unblock Netflix with a VPN). For this reason, it is generally agreed that a secure and private VPN (like the ones we have recommended) is the best option for unblocking Netflix.

Will I get banned for using a VPN with Netflix?

While it isn’t considered illegal to unblock Netflix, it is worth noting that it is against the Netflix terms of service. Despite this, there is no recorded instance of anybody ever having had their account cancelled by Netflix for this reason. In fact, it is rare for Netflix to cancel accounts at all. Even for non-payment, it tends to freeze accounts instead of deleting them.

Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings, has gone on the record to explain that VPN users are “a very small but quite vocal minority” that the firm considers “inconsequential”, so it seems unlikely it will start hunting them down anytime soon.

Fixing the Netflix proxy error

Instead of chasing down subscribers that use a VPN, Netflix prefers to block IP addresses belonging to VPNs. Doing so means it never needs to cancel accounts (which would cause it to lose subscription revenue).

Netflix is extremely active in blocking VPNs. For this reason, there is a massive shortage of reliable VPNs that successfully unblock US Netflix. Even for VPNs that do succeed - it is a game of cat and mouse. Netflix regularly blocks VPN IPs - forcing the VPN provider to quickly rectify the situation for its subscribers.

If you are currently using a VPN that doesn’t unblock Netflix you will get the following message:

“Streaming Error. You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again. For more help, visit netflix.com/proxy.”

Netflix proxy error message

If you are using a VPN that is supposed to work with Netflix, please follow our Netflix Proxy Error Guide to get it up and running. Another good idea is to head over to the Netflix VPN Reddit community (/r/NetflixViaVPN/) where people share up to date information.

How does Netflix block VPNs?

Netflix employs a number of tactics to hunt down VPN users but tracking IP addresses is the most widely used. Netflix regularly blacklists the IP addresses of known VPN servers. Because data centers only have a limited pool of IP addresses that they own, this is an incredibly effective method. Netflix seems to block entire IP address ranges from data centers that have been discovered to host VPN servers. Of course, this could block non-VPN users too but it is likely that Netflix has additional conditions that allow standard users through its dragnet. It is this aggressive blacklisting that makes it so difficult for VPN providers to circumvent the proxy ban.

All of the VPNs we recommend use a number of strategies to stay one step ahead of the Netflix firewall and should have at least one US server capable of bypassing the Netflix ban.

Which Netflix libraries can I unblock with a VPN?

Most countries have much smaller content libraries than the US. Despite this, there are some countries (such as American Samoa) that have very comprehensive catalogs.

In the table below, we have included a list of countries where Netflix is available. It shows the cost of purchasing a subscription in that Netflix region, and the percentage of the full (US) catalog that’s available.

Netflix Libraries: By the numbers

Library# of TitlesDiff with Netflix USPrice
United States56650$7.99
Canada3751-1914$6.31
United Kingdom2967-2698$7.73
Australia2044-3621$7.91
France1928-3737$9.39
Germany1785-3880$9.39

Spain1287-4378$9.39
India755-4910$7.80
Egypt617-5048$10.30

As you can see from the table, wherever you live in the world, there are thousands more Netflix titles you can access by choosing the right VPN.

For a more in-depth look at what you could be streaming, check out our Notflix tool.

Do all VPNs unblock Netflix?

No. VPNs are actually an internet security tool designed to give people digital privacy. The ability to pretend to be in a different country to watch foreign Netflix titles - is actually just a fortunate side effect.

Many leading VPNs focus on providing privacy for their users, but don’t spend time and resources unblocking Netflix.

Many well known services (Avast Secureline, Kaspersky Secure Connection, Private Internet Access, IPVanish, Buffered, and TunnelBear - to name a few) don’t even try to unblock Netflix.

Can I get a Netflix VPN for free?

There are Free VPNs on the market and some are safe to use. However, most free VPN services have terrible privacy policies, are very insecure, and have badly implemented encryption (or sometimes none at all).

As previously mentioned, Netflix is actively blocking VPNs. Free VPNs don’t have the resources to keep unblocking Netflix for their subscribers (their servers get spotted too quickly). The result for those users is the dreaded proxy error message.

Nowadays, the majority of paid VPN services can’t unblock US Netflix, making free VPNs for Netflix an urban myth.

Netflix VPN speeds

When you use a VPN, the extra distance your traffic must travel (to go via the VPN server before Netflix) causes a loss of speed. To enjoy watching Netflix US, you need a fast VPN that can process videos quickly.

Many VPNs are massively sluggish because they have substandard servers, or high levels of server congestion. This makes it impossible to enjoy Netflix videos - even if the VPN technically provides access to foreign catalogs.

If you are wondering what speeds are necessary to stream videos here is a general outline:

Connection speedAverage quality
500 KbpsLowest streaming quality
1.5 MbpsAverage quality (up to 480p)
3 MbpsSD quality (480p or better)
5 MbpsHD quality (720p or better)
25 MbpsUltra HD quality (1080p or better)

I tested pureVPN and found their IPs were detected via proxy check tools: https://whatismyip.live/proxy-check https://www.whatismyip.com/proxy-check/ . What VPN would you recommend whose IP addresses are not inlcuded in above proxy/VPN/proxy Check databases ?

Hi Fatim, VPN providers play a cat-and-mouse game with services such as Netflix, and all the VPNs listed above usual work with Netflix itself. Manny of their IPs may be listed by services such the one you mention, but IPs are regularly refreshed and new servers opened in order to ahead of such blocklists.

Here's my test with PrivateVPN and I use it to unblock US, Canada and UK Netflix from the Philippines. without PrivateVPN: latency: 15 ms download: 21.44 mbps upload: 19. 80 mbps with PrivateVPN (Los Angeles server): latency: 160 ms download: 19.81 mbps upload: 19.01 mbps with PrivateVPN (London 1 server) latency: 267 ms download: 17.20 mbps upload: 2.97 mbps I think it's a very good bargain considering that an annual subscription is only $50 unlike ExpressVPN which is $100. It may not have the same number of servers as ExpressVPN but PrivateVPN suits my needs.

So I live in mainland europe, but am from the UK, and want to use a VPN to access UK services such as iPlayer, which would also give me UK netflix. Is it possible to also have the same VPN to access US netflix and it's bigger library as well? Or would I need to get 2 VPNs, one for each country, and switch between them? (I would probably prioritise UK and wouldn't get 2 VPNs, just wanted to know if it was possible)

Hi Pd, The same VPN will work - just change VPN servers to the correct country. Do be sure, though, to take advantage of any free trials or money back guarantees to check the VPN service isn't being blocked by Netfix (or any other service you want to access).

You said "Some of the VPNs in this guide even allow people to rent their own permanent personal VPN IP address, which nobody else uses." Did I miss something? Because in the article above you said Express VPN does provide Dedicated IP addresses but not personal dedicated IP. So is there a provider who provides Netflix Unblock and at the same time allows you to purchase a Personal Dedicated IP for you to use? I have heard torguard does it but im not sure about it

NordVPN rents dedicated IPs. I'll update the article to make that clear. Yes, Torguard does rent dedicated IPs it is a pretty good VPN too! Please check their full review here at BestVPN to get a better idea of the VPN if you are interested. Otherwise, NordVPN will be the way to go!

So If I say NordVPN vs TorGuard what do you suggest? Do you have a comparison for both of them? can you link me to it please. Also I have another big question to ask about choosing the right VPN for me does this site have a forum section or something? or can I ask it here?

Yes, you can ask anything you like here! Of course! https://www.bestvpn.com/nordvpn-review/ https://www.bestvpn.com/torguard-vpn-review/ I would personally go for Nord, but they really are both very good VPNs.
