Netflix offers significantly more content to users in the United States. With a VPN, you can unblock all that extra video content using your existing account, regardless of which country you subscribe from. When it comes to unblocking Netflix content from anywhere in the world, we aim to find fast, easy to use and cheap VPNs that work reliably. We’ve assigned a dedicated team of Netflix Ninjas to test VPNs on a daily basis and find you the best possible solution.

If you are new to VPNs, these skeleton keys of the digital world allow you to alter your online location at the click of a button. All you need to do is connect to a server in the United States and the full Netflix US library of content will be at your disposal. Likewise for our US readers, you can teleport your digital self from sunny California to the streets of London to get the latest shows on Netflix UK.

If you’ve experienced the dreaded Netflix “proxy error”, you've probably already got a VPN but it has been blocked by Netflix. Fear not, our list of best Netflix VPNs will have you back to streaming in no time.

To ensure our recommended VPNs are working with Netflix, we check them on a weekly basis. We test each provider across multiple regions so our advice is always up to date.

Top 5 VPNs that work with Netflix

Here is an in-depth list where we review each of the VPNs that we recommend to unblock Netflix in 2018:

1. NordVPN

Editor's Choice

We can confirm that NordVPN works with Netflix and unblocks most libraries. What makes NordVPN unique is that you can unblock Netflix US without connecting to a server in the States. This feature, called SmartPlay, is great because it means you can enjoy the download speeds of a local server while streaming Netflix US. SmartPlay is implemented by default and can be accessed using all NordVPN apps. We have tested NordVPN and you can connect to Netflix US using any server with the exception of France, Canada, the Netherlands, and Japan. For people located in these regions, you will need to connect to a server in a different country. Our recommendation being to use a server based as close to your true location as possible i.e. a neighbouring country. We can also confirm that you can access regional libraries in France, Canada, the Netherlands and Japan by connecting to any server in that particular region.

This cost effective VPN only unblocks the Netflix US catalog. While this might seem like a one trick pony, you could argue that the provider has focused on doing its one trick very well instead of spreading itself too thin. Cyberghost told us that the vast majority of its Netflix user base are looking to unblock the US catalog, so it makes sense. Cyberghost is a fast and reliable VPN that provides superb levels of privacy. The VPN keeps no usage logs and only a few aggregated connection statistics to keep the service running smoothly. The software is available for all platforms and is extremely easy to use. Connection speeds are lightning fast, which makes it perfect for streaming in HD. In addition, this VPN has a 30-day money back guarantee to test the service.

5. PureVPN

BestVPN.com Score 6.5 out of 10

This VPN is fantastic for streaming services. Although it does get some criticism (for not providing the kind of privacy levels that some of the VPNs higher in this list have), the reality is that for most people's streaming needs PureVPN it perfect. What's more, this VPN is extremely cheap. Best of all it unblocks US Netflix! If you are looking for a VPN that will unblock content from all over the world, and provide adequate levels of privacy, with no usage logs this VPN is worth considering. However, do be aware that people do sometimes have problems using the money back guarantee: so be sure to read the stipulations carefully. If value for money is important to you - this VPN is worth a try!

Useful Netflix Guides

Curious to learn more about using a VPN with Netflix? Our guides contain a wealth of information to answer any queries that you have.

VPN for Netflix Troubleshooting and error messages

Why and how does Netflix block VPNs?

What is a Netflix Proxy?

Notflix: Netflix Libraries Around the World

Why do I need a VPN?

A VPN is a technology that creates a private network over a public one (the internet). This means you can connect to a server in the US and gain access to the complete Netflix catalog on any platform. It doesn't matter where you live - with a VPN, all the extra content can be unlocked.

If you would like to know more about using a VPN to appear in another country, check out our guide to geo-spoofing with a VPN.

Will I get banned for watching Netflix with a VPN?

No. Because you have a Netflix account, you are entitled to access the content.

The company says it may cut customers off for unblocking a foreign catalog because it is a breach of their Terms of Use; however, this has never happened. They know you are a paying customer and doesn't want to lose your custom. That is why Netflix focuses on blocking VPN IP addresses only.

Fixing the Netflix proxy error

If the VPN's IP address is blocked by Netflix you will encounter what is known as "the Netflix proxy error". You will receive the error message:

Oops, something went wrong...

Streaming Error
You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again. For more help, visit netflix.com/proxy.

Netflix proxy error message

This means your VPN has been rumbled. If you use a premium service, you should contact their support team to find out what solutions they have in place. Be warned, unblocking Netflix takes a lot of resources for VPN companies. If you are having constant issues, it might be worth switching to one of the providers recommended above. These services are dedicated to helping their users unblock the main Netflix libraries.

Check out our Netflix Proxy Error Messages Guide for more information.

How much extra content do you get when you unblock Netflix?

I tested pureVPN and found their IPs were detected via proxy check tools: https://whatismyip.live/proxy-check https://www.whatismyip.com/proxy-check/ . What VPN would you recommend whose IP addresses are not inlcuded in above proxy/VPN/proxy Check databases ?

Hi Fatim, VPN providers play a cat-and-mouse game with services such as Netflix, and all the VPNs listed above usual work with Netflix itself. Manny of their IPs may be listed by services such the one you mention, but IPs are regularly refreshed and new servers opened in order to ahead of such blocklists.

Here's my test with PrivateVPN and I use it to unblock US, Canada and UK Netflix from the Philippines. without PrivateVPN: latency: 15 ms download: 21.44 mbps upload: 19. 80 mbps with PrivateVPN (Los Angeles server): latency: 160 ms download: 19.81 mbps upload: 19.01 mbps with PrivateVPN (London 1 server) latency: 267 ms download: 17.20 mbps upload: 2.97 mbps I think it's a very good bargain considering that an annual subscription is only $50 unlike ExpressVPN which is $100. It may not have the same number of servers as ExpressVPN but PrivateVPN suits my needs.

So I live in mainland europe, but am from the UK, and want to use a VPN to access UK services such as iPlayer, which would also give me UK netflix. Is it possible to also have the same VPN to access US netflix and it's bigger library as well? Or would I need to get 2 VPNs, one for each country, and switch between them? (I would probably prioritise UK and wouldn't get 2 VPNs, just wanted to know if it was possible)

Hi Pd, The same VPN will work - just change VPN servers to the correct country. Do be sure, though, to take advantage of any free trials or money back guarantees to check the VPN service isn't being blocked by Netfix (or any other service you want to access).

You said "Some of the VPNs in this guide even allow people to rent their own permanent personal VPN IP address, which nobody else uses." Did I miss something? Because in the article above you said Express VPN does provide Dedicated IP addresses but not personal dedicated IP. So is there a provider who provides Netflix Unblock and at the same time allows you to purchase a Personal Dedicated IP for you to use? I have heard torguard does it but im not sure about it

NordVPN rents dedicated IPs. I'll update the article to make that clear. Yes, Torguard does rent dedicated IPs it is a pretty good VPN too! Please check their full review here at BestVPN to get a better idea of the VPN if you are interested. Otherwise, NordVPN will be the way to go!

So If I say NordVPN vs TorGuard what do you suggest? Do you have a comparison for both of them? can you link me to it please. Also I have another big question to ask about choosing the right VPN for me does this site have a forum section or something? or can I ask it here?

Yes, you can ask anything you like here! Of course! https://www.bestvpn.com/nordvpn-review/ https://www.bestvpn.com/torguard-vpn-review/ I would personally go for Nord, but they really are both very good VPNs.
