VPN Land Review

Highlights

Summary
VPN Land is a Canadian VPN Provider with over 10 years of service within the sector. Unfortunately they have developed slightly slowly in those years.

VPN Land is a VPN service operating from Canada that proudly states that they have over 10 years of experience in the field and also run Blacklogic VPN services. Confusingly we couldn’t find any major differences between the two companies and both use the same content and software.

Pricing & Plans

VPN Land has three main packages. Of these the annual package is sensibly priced and in the middle of the price spectrum but their other services are considerably very expensive especially their Premium account. They also offer two different routers running DD-WRT and VPN on them for sale which are reasonably priced. If you read their ToS especially point 26 you will be able to claim $10 worth of credit.

Features

VPN Land runs 107 servers but luckily these are based in 4 primary countries Canada, US, UK and NL of which all but America allow torrenting. This is great news as it allows you to access a lot of geolocation content.

Security & Privacy

At the moment VPN Land only provide L2TP, PPTP and SSTP encryption but they say that OpenVPN is in the process. For these they provide 128,168 and 256bit encryption respectively. Unfortunately being based in Canada and looking through their ToS and PP they keep a lot of details on file including some basic connection logs which they keep for 5 days – not to mention they openly state that they will co-operate with authorities if required which is a bit of a disappointment.

The website

The VPN Land website is nice and clearly laid out with all important information a click away. On top of this it is easy to browse to find your relevant information and they have a knowledge base for customers which helps your troubleshoot any major issues you may have.

Support

VPN Land has a large range of support types including phone and Skype. Though they claim they have 24/7/365 support we have found that there are plenty of times when their support service is marked as ‘Away’ and you do not actually receive a reply until later on in the day. When they do reply the technical knowledge they provide is OK.

The Process

Signing Up

Registering for an account is fairly straight forward, however, they require a lot of information to be input which as we discussed in “Security & Privacy” they do not handle as well as they possibly could. After this it is a simple affair of selecting your payment type and processing it. Unfortunately unlike with other providers you do not get your account straight away (up to 12 hours) as they take time to ensure that there is no fraudulent activity which has pros and cons.

The Windows VPN client

Unlike most providers VPN Land doesn’t have a single software instead they have separate ones for their L2TP and their SSTP connections – slightly annoying if you ask us. Also there is no individual task bar icon (though visible under network settings) to quickly observe the status and details of your connection, not to mention it is branded under their other brand – Blacklogic. There is nothing extra included in the software and we noticed that in fact all it does is set up the built in VPN connection tool which is not an issue but as mentioned it doesn’t give anything extra (this is backed up by the fact that their software is just an altered version of the Microsoft Connection Manager).

Performance (Speed, DNS and IP Test)

We gave VPN Land our usual test that we carry out for VPN providers. The speed test results, as shown in the table below, weren’t spectacular. Their DNS leak tests wasn’t too promising either as we had 5 servers, a US based hosting site, show up no matter which location we were connected to but after reviewing their software we came to the conclusion that this was due to the DNS they are using. We also noticed that on their website when we were connected to their UK servers via SSTP it said that we were in Canada, upon closer inspect we found that this is because the server was actually in Canada but they are using some sort of IP location spoofing.

Other Platforms

VPN Land displays on their website that they are proud to support multiple platforms, however the instructions for Blackberry, Linux and DD-WRT are clearly missing. We gave the L2TP service a test on our Android phone connected to their UK servers and the results were similar to those on the computer.

Conclusion

Overall we can’t find a lot of positive things to say about VPN Land apart from having a fairly cheap price and OK speeds but there is nothing extraordinary to make them stand out from the crowd.

We liked

  • Fairly Cheap Annual VPN

We weren’t so sure about

  • Software
  • Their customer service

We hated

  • Their contradictory statements

  1. They are bandits.Last year I purchased vpnland’s lifetime subscription ,but today I received their e-mail, they have canceled all the users of the lifetime subscription, and changed to $ 100 per year.It is so shameless, and there is no credit. When I contact customer service, customer service even insult I was shit, let me get out, let me remember that I pay is 0 dollars 0 cents. Because I only paid $ 50, did not bring them value, only those who pay $ 100 is their customers. This reason is really ridiculous, to know their official website, opened a year the cost is 60 dollars. I spent $ 50, used less than a year, can not be called their customers. And, I actually connected to the VPN server for less than 24 hours, and the cost is 50 dollars, can imagine, I created much value. After I contacted the customer service, they deleted my account. Even if the calculation is based on one year, I should still have half a month of service use rights. They are simply unreasonable robbers.

Stay away from this company. Scam. Bought lifetime subscription and 2 years later they said
    “IMPORTANT!
Effective June 22, 2017 ALL Lifetime VPN accounts purchased through third party websites (i.e. not purchased from us directly) are converted to full Premium VPN subscriptions and recurring invoices are issued. A cancellation request can be submitted through the Customer Portal. We are not going to issue any refund under any circumstances. We still pay for our infrastructure, salaries to our techs and additional recurring expenses. All threats and arguments will be discarded. We are open to discuss a discounted renewal recurring rates. Please email us to: support@blacklogic.com. Thank you for understanding.

Here are the responses I got when I complained:

“Hello,We can not reinstate your “lifetime” membership due to ongoing operational expenses.Maximum we can do is to add one (1) year of service to your account and your next renewal will be in August 2018.You are free to complain to anywhere you wish, but please read our terms of service where it says that we have the right to terminate any contract at any time for any reason without giving explanations.”
    And then this gem:
Just fyi.A “lifetime” account does not mean it will be valid till someone dies.It could be anyones lifespan – such as a cat, or lifespan of a hardware.

  2. Signed up for Lifetime subscription. Was just notified they cancelled my lifetime subscription and changed it to an annual subscription. Very unprofessional and poor business.

    1. Bought a lifetime subscriptlon.a year ago and all of a suddem received a 100 USD invoice and then a reminder it was unpaid. I then checked the website and only then learned they decided just to ignore their commitments and just invoice people and in my case there was no explanation. Stay away -‘firm cannot be trusted

  3. I’ve been using Blacklogic/VPN Land for about four years now. I agree with what you say. The speed is slow. Customer service is non-existent. Chat support is always ‘Away.’

Connection is not reliable in some foreign countries. I suppose it’s possible that some countries have found a way to slow up the connection of a vpn service.

I have a few months left on my two year subscription but will look for a new provider.

Blacklogic is just not what I expect from a VPN provider.

I signed up for service on 11/19/2015. Couldn’t login to a server after many attempts. Requested help from support on 11/21/2015. On 12/11/2015 after 3 weeks of no help (I have more patience than most) sent request to refund my subscription fee. I’m guessing the refund will take much longer than the 3 weeks of non support from their support group.

Good speed in the Netherlands. Easy to setup. Read their privacy policy and terms of service on their website. I just paid 10 euro for a 1 year subscription. Ratings may change later.

    Hi,

I’ve been a Blacklogic subscriber for about four years now. I agree completely with your review. For my purposes they are adequate and finally they have Open VPN. What I did not know was that they keep the info for five days and that they cooperate with the authorities which disturbs me. Not only because they do but because I do not know to what extent. My subscription just renewed but after reading your review and a couple of others I am looking to other services. Any suggestions? Thanks.
