VyprVPN Video Review

Our team at BestVPN.com has put together a video review of VyprVPN for your viewing pleasure:

VyprVPN History

Founded back in 2010 by Carolyn and Ron Yokubaitis, Golden Frog is a global internet privacy and security solutions company that offers a multitude of services, from VyprVPN and VyprVPN Business to optimized gaming network Outfox.

By basing their company in Switzerland – a country known for their privacy policies – Golden Frog reinforces their their proclaimed passion for digital privacy and an open internet.

VyprVPN Features

VyprVPN is well known for its claim to offer the world’s fastest VPN service – something that we’ll put to the test later on in this review. On top of its supposed speed, VyprVPN provides customers with a variety of different features. Premium customers are also offered proprietary technology like Chameleon and VyprDNS, that you won’t find anywhere else.

VyprVPN’s features include (but are not limited to):

  • High levels of speed and security
  • No third-party involvement
  • App available for most devices
  • Worldwide server network
  • No restrictions or download caps
  • Unlimited switching of servers
  • High end encryption & multiple protocols
  • Premium access to Chameleon
  • VyprDNS
  • NAT firewall included
  • 24/7 customer service

VyprVPN exclusive features

The most notable thing about VyprVPN is their ability to provide you with the ultimate package when you combine all of their exclusive features and proprietary technology. If you want more information on the security that VyprVPN’s proprietary technology can offer you, make sure you continue reading below!

Chameleon

VyprVPN Chameleon Technology

Chameleon is a proprietary VPN technology created by Golden Frog engineers. It offers a fast, lightweight ability to explore the internet in a “truly open and uncensored” setting. In more technical terms, Chameleon uses deep packet inspection or DPI to encrypt OpenVPN’s metadata.

As a result, you are able to bypass government, corporate and ISP limitations that prevent you from accessing restrictive networks. Even better, you are able to do so without sacrificing your security. Chameleon is available to Premium members that use Windows, Mac, Android or a router.

VyprDNS

VyprDNS DNS filtering and encryption

VyprDNS is a Golden Frog-owned and -operated DNS service that is offered exclusively to VyprVPN users. By default, we have to rely on our ISP’s to provide us DNS servers. This gives them the opportunity to log our internet activity and censor the websites we browse.

VyprDNS offers online privacy as well as assistance in the worldwide fight against censorship. In addition, it further protect users from cyber attacks and DNS filtering. VyprDNS is automatically included and used with VyprVPN. VyprDNS cannot be disabled.

Is VyprVPN Safe?

Vypr is based in Switzerland (alledgely) – but Golden Frog is based in the US. This seemingly gives VyprVPN the best location to provide anonymity to its users, however being under US jurisdiction is far from ideal. The US is the home of the NSA and the authorities can serve firms with warrants and gag orders that force them not only to provide the government with logs but also to keep it a secret (hence the term gag order).

This is why US based privacy services are generally frowned upon. Which leads to: VyprVPN may keep no usage logs but it does store some connection logs for 90 days. This is far from ideal for a firm that falls under US jurisdiction, which is why we tend not to advise this VPN for torrenting. At BestVPN.com, we would much rather have a VPN that is based in the US to implement a zero-logs policy.

Fortunately, the connection logs kept by VyprVPN are minimal and do get deleted every 90 days. Furthermore, we have no reason to suspect VyprVPN of disclosing information to the authorities. Moving on, VyprVPN is a firm that takes pride in their privacy policies, so you shouldn’t have to worry about doing most things with this VPN.

Another bright side to VyprVPN is that Golden Frog owns the entire network of servers that your VPN runs on. In other words: there are no third parties involved. Again, we do recommend against using VyprVPN for torrenting. If torrenting is a requirement for your chosen VPN, you should definitely look elsewhere.

It’s also important to know that Golden Frog is still in allegiance with the US-EU Safe Harbor Framework set forth by the US Department of Commerce. As such, Golden Frog has documented that it “adheres to the Safe Harbor Privacy Principles of notice, choice, onward transfer, security, data integrity, access, and enforcement”.

VyprVPN US-EU Safe Harbor Framework

In other words: the information retained by VyprVPN and Golden Frog can be handed over to authorities if the situation specifics permit. So while VyprVPN is truthful in some of their claims, they are overall deceptive in their claims of offering complete privacy.

VyprVPN Protocols

VyprVPN offers several different protocols that operate at various levels of speed and encryption. The current protocols offered by VyprVPN include PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, OpenVPN, and Chameleon for premium members. At BestVPN.com, we recommend either OpenVPN or Chameleon.

Both protocols use super secure 256-bit AES encryption and keep you safe by verifying data with digital certificates. If you’re looking for an extra layer of protection, Chameleon also offers the masking of VPN traffic and victory over deep packet inspection.

See our detailed guide for more information on the different types of encryption.

VyprVPN’s NAT Firewall

A great additional layer of security is VyprVPN’s NAT Firewall. By restricting unfamiliar inbound traffic with the use of your VyprVPN, your NAT Firewall can protect any of your connected devices with ease. This extra layer of security is a great way to prevent cyber attacks like identity theft and malware uploads.

Torrenting with VyprVPN

While VyprVPN does allow P2P file sharing, we recommend not using them to torrent. If you are an avid torrenter, you’ll quickly realize that any copyright violation will result in the disabling of your VyprVPN account.

For a list of VPN services that are best for torrenting, check out our helpful guide.

VyprVPN Website

VyprVPN’s website is user-friendly and easy to navigate. With a clean, organized homepage that offers links to relevant information, you can easily find what you’re looking for. Furthermore, the website also offers detailed information on its products, resources, support, history, policies, and terms of service.

VyprVPN website homepage

In addition, Golden Frog links to both the company and VyprVPN’s social media profiles at the bottom of their homepage. For more information on their company and products, check out their Facebook and Twitter profiles.

VyprVPN Customer Support

With around the clock customer service that operates 365 days of the year, and an active community in the official Golden Frog forum, VyprVPN’s overall customer support system is considered above average.

You can get in contact with VyprVPN’s customer service team by email (support@goldenfrog.com), an online contact form, or by using their website’s live chat. While gathering more information on VyprVPN’s log policy, I was also able to give their customer support system a test run.

Submitting a query is easy – you enter your details and connect to a live chat representative. After a few seconds of waiting, I received a helpful reply to my inquiry. In addition, I was also given contact details in case further communication was necessary.

Overall, the experience was helpful and user-friendly.

VPN Testing with VyprVPN

Every VPN requires testing to verify that it’s working properly. VyprVPN is no exception. In order to provide you with the most accurate information possible, I’ve personally tested VyprVPN for speed and different types of leaks.

Speed Test

VyprVPN speed tests

When testing VyprVPN’s speed using a USA – Chicago based server, my results were somewhat average with a total of 31/Mbps for download speed. In addition, my upload speed was also average at 5/Mbps. That being said, other speed tests have resulted in a steady 50+ Mbps.

VyprVPN speed test

To test your own VyprVPN speed, visit a website such as www.speedtest.net.

DNS/WebRTC/IPv6 Test

As a general rule, our team at BestVPN.com recommends performing leak tests on a somewhat regular basis to stay on top of things. Fortunately, no issues arose during my own testing for DNS, WebRTC and/or IPv6 leaks.

VyprVPN Leak

To test your own VyprVPN for leaks, visit websites like ipleak.net, test-ipv6.com, and/or doileak.net.

VyprVPN Platform Availability

VyprVPN is available to Windows, Mac, iOS and Android users. In addition, VyprVPN is also compatible with most TVs and routers. This includes Android TV, OpenELEC, Apple TV and Tomato.

VyprVPN available platforms

iOS

  • Support for iOS 8 and higher

VyprVPN Cloud/Server

Previously known as VyprVPN Server, VyprVPN Cloud is a user-friendly, super secure “VPN server deployment solution”. With its easy setup and overall convenience, we can have an extra layer of protection when surfing our public or private cloud servers.

VyprVPN Cloud

The best part about VyprVPN Cloud is that it doesn’t require hardware. This gives corporations the chance to secure an access point that allows employees to enter internal networks. Minimum server space is 1 GB of memory.

VyprVPN Cloud is available for DigitalOcean, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and VirtualBox platforms and applications are available for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices. Furthermore, VyprVPN Cloud also offers OpenVPN, IPSec and Chameleon protocols.

VyprVPN Cloud key features

Cyphr

Cyphr is a great solution to private messaging. By using public/private key pairs to achieve ultimate security, Cyphr can protect your conversations from prying eyes like third parties, cellphone providers, and even Golden Frog themselves.

Cyphr Logo

Some key features of Cyphr include (but are not limited to):

  • Public key verification
  • Symmetric key encryption
  • Private key decryption

That being said, Golden Frog does collect and store some metadata necessary for Cyphr to work. For more information, see the picture below.

VyprVPN Cyphr Log Policy

Cyphr is available as a free download for iOS and Android devices.

VyprVPN Review: Conclusion

PROS:
  • No usage logs
  • Strong encryption protocols
  • Switzerland based
  • Better than average speeds
  • Worldwide server network
  • Proprietary Technology & exclusive features
CONS:
  • Not a good P2P choice
  • Somewhat costly
  • No cryptocurrency payment option
  • Connection logs stored for 30 days
  • Not as private as claims

VyprVPN is a great choice for those that seek a VPN for lightweight use. With servers that spread across the globe and a user-friendly interface, VyprVPN is also a great option for VPN beginners willing to spend a little extra cash.

In addition to lightweight use, VyprVPN can be good for some heavyweight things that don’t involve P2P file sharing. If you’re still not convinced, take some time to test the product yourself by using their free three-day no-risk trial –  it’s available for any of their plans.

One of the most terrible VPN services i ever seen.
I need VPN for unblocking YouTube videos, accessing Google services and more. And most of their IP addresses are recognized as USA by Google and a lot of more websites.
About buffering, is way too slow and doesn’t ever start.
I’m from Germany and the “german servers” are slow and their IP addresses are recognized as USA.
I really do not recommend this VPN.

  1. Their yearly subscription renewal is automatic without prior notice. When that happened, instead of sending me a full refund, the customer service charged me a monthly service fee for a whole month, just because I didn’t know the service was renewed and logined the software 2 to 3 times. Also, the customer service manager lady had a very harsh tone, which revealed the selfrightiouseness that these people have. I am so tired of this type of “my rules are flawless and everyone should follow and listen to me” attitude. I would admit that this comapny did a decent job on what they are doing, it’s just that these people simply don’t have the concept of customer satisfaction. From the tone in their responses, I bet they will also use both personal and usage information they have collected from you against you. They give you the feeling of being bullied by their fee charging traps. I also don’t think they care about your privacy at all. I would not recommend this service to anyone.

  2. They are thieves company

After 1 day of first subscription they locked my account without any reason

I did not make anythings wrong

    And also no refund

Again this company are truely thieves

  3. DO NOT GET THIS SERVICE. I have/had them until this morning and I noticed I was unprotected. I logged into my e-mail and noticed they sent me a .eml file I COULD not read. I contacted them and they claimed it was a DMCA takedown notice. I told them I did not do it and further that I was not stating that simply becuase I had some fear of whomever sent them the notice. In fact I told them I don’t give 1/2 a crap about a DMCA notice. Never had one ever in my life, but I know one can receive many before anything really happens per FCC rules. File sharing is NOT why I have their service. The problem is that they cut service IMMEDIATELY upon receipt of a notice they claim they took no steps to verify. Bear in mind this is the very FIRST notice in two months of service. They indicated I could get service back by promising not to violate copyrights. WHAT!??? I told them I do not want a service where someone can invite me to their site, note my ip address, and then send a bogus takedown notice to Goldenfrog/Vypr and when I come back to that site my real IP is exposed. They should have contacted me first before any disconnection rather than exposing me like that. Then they pretend not to understand that scenario and just repeat what VPN service is. Finally they tell you they are keeping your money for the whole year, though they only provided less than two months service in my case. CALL YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPANY AND GET ***ALL*** OF YOUR SUBSCRIPTION MONEY BACK. Your credit card company will side with you against these vultures.

These guys are not anonymous at all. After a hour of usage they locked my account and started to ask following questions: where am I from? What is my credit card last 4 digits? At what time did I register with them? And if you don’t agree to answer, they simply block you access to VPN, they don’t care what you think about that. For sure, this VPN exists just to spy for you, it is not anonymous and it asks even more details about you than they see already from theirs logs.

After two weeks of signing up, more features are added and prices are lowered. As an existing customer, I am not informed about this by email (or anything else) and do not automatically get access to the new features, only AFTER I prompt them why I do not have the advertised number of maximum simultaneous connections, I am told that I am still on an old payment plan and that it is my own fault for not staying up to date with their changes in their offer.

  4. I would recommend people to stay away from VyprVPN because of weired billing policies. On top of that, during 1 month period, the performance was avarage. I use Express VPN now and I am very happy with it. Before that, I was using Astrill and it worked really great! But Astrill has moments when it’s not working for a few days.

  5. I never write comments but someone needs to make people aware.

I have tried over 15 VPNs and this one is one of if not the worst of them all.

I signed up for their service. After my order was complete I went back on their website to sign in. As I signed in I noticed a promotion for 25% off which was not applied to me. After messaging their employee through the chat he said I do not qualify for the promo because I am a new customer. I literally signed up within in the hour I told him. He repeated that I am not a new customer after I explained to him my situation.

So the option I was given was to cancel my subscription and resign up, then I would be entitled to the 25% off, which was quite weird.

After doing this I had, had enough with this company because of this whole aggravation, so I decided to exercise my 3 day money back guarantee. They then told me I was not allowed to get the 3 day money back because I wasn’t a new customer (because they made me cancel and resign up) all of this within 36 hours!

    This company is a joke!

  6. It is terrible. Thirst of all there app doesn’t work with my both android devices and support couldn’t help me. And now they block my account of the reason of copyrights. I only downloaded torrents.
Of course they don’t want give my money back.
How could they know it +was I if they have zero-knoleges???

    1. Hi Just upset user,

VyprVPN does not permit torrenting copyrighted material, and makes no claim to zero-knowledge (it keeps extensive logs).

    2. Hello Douglas,
What do think of Vypr’s claim that they fully control their server instead of renting from other ISPs to ensure no back doors? The arrest of Earthvpn server and the “seize” of two Perfect Privacy servers do real that some VPN providers do not have full control of the infrasture, even though they do not keep logs on software( that means there might be hardware backdoors run by the ISP). For example, the IP addresses of 106.186.125.x are controlled by Linode but they also rent from KDDI, and some VPN or proxy providers buy the IPs from Linode(or better Ram dedicated servers). This is the point- who on the earth owns the IP and the server?
On this issue, Vypr seems to be very “honest”. But what we want it to be is that Vypr offers more privacy for its users.

      1. Hi Hello,

Well… although VyprVPN does own all its own servers, it also keeps extensive connection logs. According to its Privacy Policy:

“Each time a user connects to VyprVPN, we retain the following data for 30 days: the user’s source IP address, the VyprVPN IP address used by the user, connection start and stop time and total number of bytes used.”

If bare metal servers are used with full hard disk encryption and shared IPs, the risked associated with third party servers are minimal. Please see 5 Best No Logs VPNs (Server Logs section) for a discussion by me on this issue.

  7. Hi, I recently used vypr vpn and interested about chameleon protocol. Can you give me other vpn services which have same protocol like chameleon?

  8. I just downloaded this service to give it a try. Upon launching the program I was asked to registered with an e-mail and password. I immediately got an e-mail that my information was denied, and they asked the location that I registered from. The account control panel indicated that it was under fraud investigation. When talking to live chat, the rude employee “Terr…” told me in a cold manner your account was denied and we can’t offer you this service. When I asked to know the reason (i just registered with an email!) he said we don’t tell the reason why deny requests, you should look to another service, and closed the chat session. That is no way to treat not just your customers, but ordinary people who actually took the time to download and install your service. And to be honest there are so many cheaper and better VPN services out there, I can’t understand how you can afford to.

  9. It is not stated on the main page, but only when going to my PayPal payment site it seemed that the plans advertised as “billed annually” are actually 2-year subscriptions without an earlier canceling option!?!
So I stopped the purchase, since I found this to be quite a rip-off. Can anyone comment if I understood it correctly? Thanks.

    1. Hi Marco,

Hmm. So I just started to signup for an annual Premium account, and it when it gets to the payment bit, it says I will be charged $88 annually. Which is right. So not sure what happened in your case…

  10. “This sentiment is reaffirmed by their decision to base the service in Switzerland, a country renowned for its favorable privacy laws.”
The quote above is completely false. Switzerland has awful data retention laws, which have been in place since 2002. Switzerland no longer has any secrecy with banking either as they have literally handed over the names of thousands of account holders to US, German, and other EU officials. Switzerland is absolutely not “renowned for it’s favorable privacy laws.” There are even articles written about this exact topic on this website: “Switzerland passes severe new surveillance laws”

Just wanted to offer this correction. Switzerland is NOT a country of “favorable privacy laws.” Those days are long gone!
    thanks

    1. Hi Dave,

      According to its ToS,

      “Copyright Infringement and Illegal Content

Golden Frog prohibits the use of any of its services to publish or share illegal content. Golden Frog takes copyright and other intellectual property rights very seriously, and we encourage you to do the same. You are responsible for determining the legal status of any intellectual property you use or copy through any Golden Frog service. Golden Frog cannot and does not review the information flowing through its services. You agree to not transfer copyrighted works through the service without the express permission of the copyright holder.

Golden Frog is a member of the Internet Watch Foundation and any reported criminal online content from the Internet Watch Foundation will be removed immediately. Golden Frog will terminate in appropriate circumstances subscribers who are repeat infringers of either unlawfully copyrighted material or otherwise illegal content. See the Golden Frog Copyright Policy for information on how Golden Frog handles notices of copyright infringement. The Golden Frog Copyright Policy is incorporated by reference.”

So it might allow torrenting, as long as its legal! Just today I published a comment from a reader who received a legal complaint from a copyright holder after using VyprVPN…

Hello I am using VyprVPN since a couple of years. And the review here, does not repeat my experiences with this service. VyprVPN was always the most stable VPN service I have ever tried/used and the average speed is great. Especially also by traveling in different countries, you can always rely on this service. So it has my full recommendation so far!

    1. Hi marten,

Um. I think the reviewer’s experiences are pretty similar to your own. In my experince, VyprVPN is fast and reliable, but given the logs it keeps and the fact that whatever it says, the parent company is subject to US laws, I would not choose it if privacy was my primary concern.

  11. Hello! My name is Liz and I am the VP of Sales & Director of Marketing at Golden Frog (VyprVPN). If anyone has questions or feedback, I will be keeping an eye on this review to ensure we address. Thanks much,
    Liz

    1. Liz –

I’m having a bad experience with Golden Frog and would really appreciate your help. I’ve been working with customer support but they are not able to resolve the issue for me.

I cancelled my account online, so I can no longer log into the site. However, I’m still getting charged every month for a service I’m not using. Your customer support insists me that I can only cancel the account through the control panel but they don’t understand my explanation that I’m not able to log into the control panel.

Would you be able to help me or connect me with someone in your team who can?

      Thank you!
