10 best VPNs for the USA to use in 2024

With the right USA VPN, you'll be able to improve your internet privacy and unblock American websites and on-demand streaming services.

A VPN is a versatile tool that encrypts all of your internet traffic. This renders it unreadable to snooping third parties (including your Internet Service Provider, workplace, and even your government), and allows you to go about your day-to-day web browsing (or torrenting) without worrying about who might be tracking your digital footprint.

You'll also be able to unblock geo-restricted content with a VPN – and plenty of folks living outside of the US use VPNs to access regional content, such as US-only streaming services. How does this work? Well, when you connect to a VPN server, the sites you visit will be fooled into thinking that you're located in the same place as that server, and grant you access to geo-restricted content without a second thought.

We're all avid streamers here at ProPrivacy, and routinely use the services in this guide to acquire US IP addresses and enjoy the content that'd otherwise be inaccessible. ExpressVPN Demo ExpressVPN Demo

ExpressVPN claims a top spot in our list of recommendations thanks to its feature-rich apps available for all platforms. You'll have no trouble unblocking geo-restricted content, hopping from server to server, or ensuring that your browsing sessions stay secure.

No slowing down

There are ExpressVPN servers dotted across the globe in a whopping 104 countries – and plenty of those servers are located in the United States. You can connect to key US locations like Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago (amongst others) in just a few clicks, and enjoy previously geo-restricted content no matter where you are in the world! ExpressVPN is also my go-to when it comes to checking out US shows and movies. The service seamlessly provides access to US Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+, and can even unblock any social media platforms or news sites that might've been banned by your place of work or government.

Admittedly, ExpressVPN is a pricey service – but you get what you pay for, and with ExpressVPN, you're paying for top-notch security and a long list of features! It's well worth pointing out that ExpressVPN is seriously quick, too. This means that your movie marathons won't be interrupted by those dreaded buffering circles.

A privacy titan

ExpressVPN doesn't pull any punches when it comes to security – which is just what I like to see! Strong AES 256-bit encryption prevents third-party snooping, and users can even take their pick of a number of popular protocols. If security is your primary concern, then you'll want to stick with the battle-tested OpenVPN option – and ExpressVPN's very own Lightway protocol is a great alternative for streamers and torrenters looking for something speedier. I'm glad to see that ExpressVPN has its very own kill-switch, called Network Lock, which is automatically enabled whenever you connect to the VPN. So, your original IP address won't leak if your VPN connection drops, and you won't have to go trawling through settings menus and options!

Being based in the British Virgin Islands means that ExpressVPN is far beyond the reach of invasive jurisdictions – like the United States. ExpressVPN is also a no-logs provider that isn't interested in keeping tabs on your activity, and has invited auditing powerhouse PwC to comb through its claim. This proactive approach to privacy is a huge part of why I recommend ExpressVPN to anyone interested in torrenting, accessing geo-restricted streams, or fed up with state-sponsored surveillance.

Form and function

You'll be able to install ExpressVPN on virtually any device in the home, including smart TVs and consoles, and its apps are incredibly fresh-looking and easy to use! I'm certain that total VPN newcomers will have no trouble navigating around the interface. These streamlined apps really do make it easy for anyone to gain a US IP address or check out what's new on US Netflix – and there are plenty of advanced options to check out if you're interested. Currently, ExpressVPN supports five simultaneous connections, and that's a decent amount... although cheaper services are beginning to offer far more (for far less).

It's well worth taking ExpressVPN for a trial run via its 30-day money-back guarantee! And, if you need help getting things set up or want to know which US server would suit you best, reach out to the VPN's superb customer service team. They're available 24/7 and contactable by live chat or email, and certainly don't shy away from technical queries.

NordVPN is a popular service that's particularly suited to streaming and torrenting, and comes with all the tools you'll need to stay secure.

Nord Demo

Nord Demo Nord Demo

NordVPN proves that a quick, reliable, and feature-rich service doesn't have to cost the earth! The VPN is incredibly popular, thanks to easy-to-use apps, and has a broad selection of servers in the United States to connect to.

The streamer's dream

Few VPNs can go toe-to-toe with NordVPN when it comes to servers! NordVPN commands a veritable empire, with thousands of servers in 61 countries worldwide, and around 1,970 of those servers are in the United States. Hopping from US location to US location is incredibly easy, and getting your very own US IP address can be achieved in just a few clicks.

As a result, NordVPN is a superb option for anyone who wants to check out geo-restricted content from across the pond. The service has no trouble unblocking the world's most in-demand streaming services, like Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer, as well as sites local to the US that you might want to access as normal when you jet off overseas. Plus, NordVPN comes with its very own Smart DNS service that'll allow you to enjoy geo-restricted content directly on your smart TV!

Customizable security

As you'd expect from one of the industry's biggest names, NordVPN packs robust AES 256-bit encryption that'll keep your data out of the hands of even the most determined snoopers. Plus, a selection of protocols are available to use. In addition to OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPSec, users can check out NordLynx – NordVPN's very own proprietary protocol modeled around WireGuard! NordLynx is quick, easy to use, and super secure, so it might just be the way to go if you're an avid streamer. In addition, NordVPN packs an automated kill-switch, as well as obfuscation (stealth) servers and DNS leak protection, so you can perform sensitive tasks like torrenting with total peace of mind.

NordVPN makes its home in Panama, where there are no data retention laws, and this is great news for user privacy! The service is also committed to a no-logs policy, and has had its claim audited by PwC, who confirmed that NordVPN isn't storing any connection timestamps or traffic data.

Round-the-clock support

You'll be able to install NordVPN on any Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, or Linux device – and the VPN is even compatible with routers and smart TVs! This compatibility lets you cover all of the gadgets in your home, and means that you can stay secure (thanks to the VPN encryption) when relying on public Wi-Fi hotspots. I particularly like the NordVPN ad-blocker, CyberSec, which makes quick work of pop-ups, trackers, and malware. It's a simple feature that makes the web that much safer to navigate – and that comes in especially handy if you frequent streaming sites like 123movies!

NordVPN has an excellent customer service team available 24/7 to field any questions, and you can reach out to them via email or live chat. All in all, I'd recommend taking NordVPN for a trial run by making good use of its 30-day money-back guarantee, and simply claiming your money back if you're less than thrilled with the service.

Surfshark is an inexpensive VPN option that has mastered the art of unblocking US content – and HD streaming is a breeze, too!

Surfshark Demo

Surfshark Demo Surfshark Demo

Surfshark is another relative newcomer to the VPN market, and has quickly proven that it's more than capable of hanging out at the top of the pile with the big players! Surfshark is based in the British Virgin Islands, which is great new for the privacy-conscious among us, and boasts worldwide server coverage.

One-stop streaming

There are thousands of Surfshark servers located in 100 countries – and as if that wasn't impressive enough, 600 of the servers are in the United States! International users who want to check out US content will be able to hop across 25 US cities, and US citizens who'd rather evade NSA surveillance will appreciate nearby servers in Canada and Costa Rica.

Surfshark users will also be able to take their pick of geo-restricted content from around the world! Whether you want to catch up with what's new on Netflix or Hulu, or want to keep in touch with friends via social media sites (that might be blocked by your workplace or government), Surfshark has you covered. I certainly appreciate how quick the VPN is, too, and have been able to enjoy smooth HD streaming whilst connected. Another neat bonus is Surfshark's free smart DNS service, which comes in handy if you'd rather stream US Netflix directly to your smart TV – just remember, these smart DNS services lack the encryption of a more traditional VPN.

Your privacy shield

Surfshark packs superb OpenVPN encryption that'll secure your internet traffic, whether you're at home or using a public Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing you to surf the web without worrying about whether your every action is being logged. The IKEv2 and WireGuard protocols are also available, if you're looking for a speed boost, and the Shadowsocks proxy can even bypass censorship efforts like the Great Firewall of China. A Surfshark subscription is also packed with extra security features, like a kill-switch (that you'll first need to activate), and a multi-hop VPN, which routes your traffic through two different VPN servers to further enhance your digital privacy.

And speaking of privacy, Surfshark ticks all the right boxes when it comes to logging – which is to say, the VPN doesn't log any data regarding its users' whereabouts! This no-logs policy has even been audited by Cure53, a well-respected firm. In addition, being based in the British Virgin Islands means that Surfshark doesn't have to worry about data retention laws that might otherwise force them to keep tabs on what their users are doing, and when.

More for your money

I'm never not impressed by the fact that Surfshark offers unlimited simultaneous connections – this means that you can secure any device in your home, any device belonging to friends and family, and take that security with you wherever you travel. A Surfshark subscription won't break the bank, either, so it's real value for money. Surfshark apps are available for all major platforms, including Linux, as well as smart TVs and consoles – and I like that the VPN has its own ad-blocker to remove the most persistent and pesky ads and trackers out there. Finally, the service's split tunneling feature makes it incredibly easy to multitask whilst connected to a VPN server, and decide which apps and sites are routed through your original internet connection and which aren't!

Surfshark's 24/7 customer support is stellar, and you'll have a full 30-day period to put the provider through its paces and decide whether or not you'd like your money back. Alternatively, a 7-day free trial is available to Android, iOS, and Mac users, and Surfshark will even let you know when the trial is about to end – talk about considerate!

PIA Demo

PIA Demo PIA Demo

Private Internet Access (PIA) has carved out an impressive niche in the VPN industry, offering a privacy-oriented service with an array of customization options. The majority of PIA's servers are in the United States, which is great news for streamers, who'll be able to enjoy HD content from wherever they are in the world!

Focused on America

PIA's server network is staggeringly expansive, with tens of thousands of servers in 84 countries across the globe. Being based in the United States means that most of these servers are dotted across the 50 states, however, thoroughly spoiling users for choice! Connecting to any of PIA's servers is a simple task – made even more straightforward by PIA's instant setup process. This feature is one of my favorites, because it means that even VPN newcomers will be able to take advantage of the provider's geo-hopping, and content-unblocking, abilities.

Whether you're a fan of US content living overseas, or an American citizen on vacation, PIA will be able to access all sorts of US streaming services on demand. Sites like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max will be fully accessible – and PIA's speedy servers ensure that your favorite box sets won't be interrupted by buffering or sudden drops in quality. PIA also puts a stop to ISP throttling, seeing as its encryption prevents your internet provider from keeping tabs on what you're getting up to.

Comprehensive privacy protection

PIA implements top-notch OpenVPN encryption, which is just what I like to see, and will ensure that your browsing sessions remain private – nobody wants their ISP, workplace, or government keeping tabs on their day-to-day activities, after all. WireGuard is available to PIA users, too, who'll also be glad to learn that PIA's software is completely open-source. This means that you can examine the PIA client source code yourself, if you wanted to, and check it over for backdoors and vulnerabilities. PIA also has its very own kill-switch, though you'll need to manually enable it via the settings, and the PIA MACE feature removes pesky ads and trackers that might otherwise catch you (or the folks you share your devices with) off guard.

Some prospective subscribers might be put off by the fact that PIA is based in the United States – and that's totally reasonable. The US is home to data-hungry and invasive organizations like the NSA, and could feasibly service VPNs like PIA with warrants and gag orders, forcing them to hand over user data. However, PIA abides by a zero-logs policy, and has proven that it isn't interested in storing any identifiable information on multiple occasions in court.

Expert advice, whenever you need it

Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS users will be able to enjoy PIA apps – and PIA is one of only a handful of VPNs to have its very own Linux GUI, too! Users get ten simultaneous connections to play with, which is pretty generous, although if you have more devices to protect and want to do so automatically, you can install PIA on a VPN-compatible router.

PIA's customer support team is powered by over 10 years of expertise in the field (and available 24/7), so you can expect comprehensive answers to any queries. If you fancy trying PIA for yourself, be sure to make good use of its 30-day money-back guarantee, or its 7-day free trial for Android and iOS users!

PrivateVPN Demo

PrivateVPN Demo PrivateVPN Demo

PrivateVPN well and truly lives up to its name, offering a secure service for a budget price, and one that can readily access all your favorite US services. PrivateVPN might be one of the newer names on our list, but it's becoming a consumer favorite, thanks to its speeds, ease of use, and overall versatility.

A VPN on the rise

There are PrivateVPN servers scattered all over the United States, in key locations like Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York. This makes it far easier to pick a US server close to your actual location, if you live overseas – and will also allow you to avoid congestion issues. Overall, PrivateVPN has fewer servers than some of the other names in our top 10, but don't let that fool you! PrivateVPN is still a young service, and one that's rapidly evolving. I've been consistently impressed by just how intuitive it is to use.

PrivateVPN also excels at unblocking geo-restricted content. In fact, it's become one of my go-to services for those times when I want to check out what's new on Netflix US! With PrivateVPN, you'll be able to unblock a selection of international Netflix libraries, as well as services like BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and HBO Go, regardless of whether you're at home, at school, or on vacation. Plus, PrivateVPN is seriously speedy, and more than holds its own when compared to more costly competitors.

The name of the game

Digital privacy is a right, not a privilege, and PrivateVPN can help you reclaim your online security with well-implemented OpenVPN encryption. This prevents nosey third parties from tracking your activity across the web, and can even put a stop to ISP throttling, seeing as they'll be none-the-wiser about what you're doing – or whether you're streaming, gaming, or torrenting. I really enjoy how PrivateVPN's kill-switch and auto-connect features work in tandem. Essentially, if your VPN connection drops, the kill-switch will cut your internet connection to prevent IP leaks, and once the VPN connection has been reestablished, auto-connect will reconnect you in sequence. This attention to detail, and PrivateVPN's stealth servers, cement it as a truly security-minded server – and I have no qualms about recommending the service to folks living under restrictive regimes.

Whilst PrivateVPN protects users from IPv6 and DNS leaks, it is currently based in Sweden, where there are mandatory data retention laws. This isn't ideal, but because PrivateVPN sticks to a zero-logs policy, users don't have to worry about their identifiable data ending up in the hands of the authorities. That being said, I would like to see PrivateVPN invest in a public audit of its service to properly allay these concerns.

No-risk, no-stress

The PrivateVPN apps are intuitive, look great, and can be installed on just about any platform you can imagine! You don't have to be a tech wizard to get the VPN set up, either. PrivateVPN's 1-click-setup lives up to its name, and once you've downloaded the software, you'll be ready to check out US Netflix and other geo-restricted sites in just a few clicks. However, if you do need help, PrivateVPN's customer support team (composed of in-house developers) is just an email or live chat away!

PrivateVPN subscribers have six simultaneous connections to share as they see fit, and a 30-day money-back guarantee to put to good use – and I certainly recommend taking the time to put the provider through its paces on your own devices! Alternatively, thanks to a 7-day free trial, you can check out PrivateVPN without parting with a penny.

VYPR Demo

VYPR Demo VYPR Demo

VyprVPN is a superb example of a premium provider, packed with features, that can be used by just about anyone. Sleek apps are available for all platforms, encryption is well-implemented, and VyprVPN has plenty of servers located in the United States (and beyond) to choose from.

Snoop-free servers

A VyprVPN subscription will bag you access to hundreds of servers in 70 locations – making it incredibly easy to bypass censorship measures that'd otherwise prevent you from accessing certain sites or apps. And if you're interested in US-specific content, VyprVPN has servers in key locations like New York, Washington, Los Angeles, and Austin! Nearby servers in Canada and Mexico also come in handy for US natives looking to sidestep NSA snooping or access international services.

VyprVPN is a solid pick when it comes to streaming, too, and can unblock the likes of Netflix US, Amazon Prime, HBO, and Disney+. Sports fans will also be glad to hear that the service can also grant access to ESPN, no matter where you live, or which team you support. VyprVPN supports P2P activity and allows unlimited server switching, which might sound like a no-brainer, but is vitally important when it comes to avoiding congestion. Finally, I'm hugely impressed that VyprVPN owns its entire server network. This effectively cuts out any reliance on third parties and reduces the risk of outside snooping.

A dedicated defender of privacy

VyprVPN understands the importance of preventing hackers, government agents, and even network administrators from taking a peek at your identifiable information and browsing habits – which is why it implements tough AES 256-bit encryption. This is the industry gold standard, and I'm also glad to see the service allowing users to pick from a number of solid protocols. OpenVPN and IKEv2 are battled-tested and robust, and the up-and-coming WireGuard is shaping up to be a less resource-intensive alternative that's especially popular with streamers and gamers. VyprVPN's Chameleon protocol can also be used to bypass any VPN blocks – and its kill-switch can prevent data leaks in the event of an unexpected connection dropout.

The Swiss-based VyprVPN has also undergone a public audit of its service, which is what I've come to expect from today's top services! Leviathan Security Group confirmed that VyprVPN doesn't keep hold of user logs back in 2018, and whilst this is a positive, proactive measure, I'd like to see VyprVPN commit to more regular inspections.

Easy to use... and easy on the eyes

VyprVPN can be installed in just a few minutes, and it's as simple as downloading the installer and following along with the on-screen prompts. Apps are available for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS – and I think the VyprVPN GUI might just be my favorite! It's easy to navigate, uncluttered, and rather stylish. VyprVPN customers will have five simultaneous connections to use as they see fit, more than enough to secure most devices in their home. If five connections still aren't enough, or if you'd rather automatically secure your internet-enabled devices, then the VPN can be used with compatible routers.

Like all of our top picks, VyprVPN has an expert customer service team who are happy to tackle technical questions and dish out advice, and you can reach out to them via email and live chat. Then, if you're ready to take VyprVPN for a test drive, you'll have a full 30-day money-back guarantee to take advantage of.

Highly reliable and based in the US, IPVanish is a no-logs provider that's compatible with virtually every platform out there. Even better, these apps are incredibly easy to use – even for VPN newbies!

It's encouraging to hear that IPVanish owns almost the entirety of its Tier 1 server network, and I also like to see that there are torrenting-enabled servers, as well as obfuscated (stealth) servers that can come in handy for folks living under oppressive regimes. IPVanish can also unblock a long list of streaming services – so you'll never have to worry about running out of shows to binge or movies to watch. Netflix US, Hulu, HBO Go; IPVanish is your key to US-specific content, as well as sites and apps from overseas.

With IPVanish, you'll have a selection of tried-and-tested protocols to choose from. OpenVPN, IKEv2, IPSec, and even WireGuard – IPVanish lets users tailor their VPN connection to their specific use case, which is something that more advanced users will certainly appreciate. I also like that IPVanish packs its own kill-switch, as well as DNS leak protection, so you don't have to worry about accidentally leaving an identifiable trail of data across the web. The 'Scramble' obfuscation feature is another nice addition that can disguise VPN traffic and make it undetectable to deep packet inspections – though you'll need to head into the Settings menu to enable it.

IPVanish touts itself as a no-logs provider, and claims that it won't store user logs, but has not invested in a third-party audit of its services. I'd like the VPN to rectify this sooner rather than later. A public audit would also go some way to allay concerns about IPVanish's US headquarters – a potential red flag factor for some prospective users, given the country's reputation as a surveillance state.

Smart apps for smart devices

The IPVanish apps have a green and black Matrix-style flavor, and whether you see this as retro-chic or just plain outdated will be totally subjective, but the important thing is that the apps are compatible with just about every platform you can imagine. IPVanish can also be installed on compatible routers – although a subscription bags users unlimited simultaneous connections anyway! This makes it a great pick for families, or folks who simply own a lot of internet-enabled devices. I've never had trouble installing IPVanish on a mobile device or PC, and often find myself recommending the service to VPN newcomers, who'll want to get right to unblocking US content.

If you need some help determining which server to connect to, or have some technical questions you'd like answered, the IPVanish customer service team is available 24/7 to help out. All in all, the service is a super all-rounder and well worth comparing to our other recommendations by using its 30-day money-back guarantee.

CyberGhost Demo

CyberGhost Demo CyberGhost Demo

CyberGhost VPN easily claims a top spot in our list of recommendations, thanks to its broad selection of US servers and access to on-demand streaming services. Plus, a no-logs policy ensures that your online activity remains private.

Dedicated servers, wherever you need them

CyberGhost's web of servers is particularly impressive – with thousands of servers in 100 countries , including the United States. In fact, over a thousand of these servers are located within America, across 11 cities, making CyberGhost an excellent pick for anyone overseas wanting to unblock the largest content libraries out there. CyberGhost also has dedicated servers for torrenting and streaming, and its NoSpy servers are designed to give users a massive privacy boost, seeing as they're managed end-to-end by the CyberGhost team, and nobody else.

This expansive network means that CyberGhost can be used to unblock streaming services, blogs, social media profiles, and virtually any other site or app that might be blocked by your place of work... or government. However, whilst the VPN does work with Netflix US (as well as Hulu, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max), it can be a little temperamental compared to some of the other VPNs in this list.

Round-the-clock security

CyberGhost packs AES 256-bit encryption, which is vitally important to anyone living in, or visiting, the United States. US citizens may want to regain control over how their data is collected and stored, and vacationers may be less than thrilled at the idea of hackers targeting them via public Wi-Fi hotspots – and CyberGhost is equipped to handle these situations securely. This is largely thanks to OpenVPN encryption, although the IKEv2 and WireGuard protocols are also available. I also like that CyberGhost has its own automatic kill-switch, too, which works well with the provider's DNS and IP leak protection to prevent accidental data leaks if the VPN connection happens to drop.

It's great to see that CyberGhost is a zero-logs provider that takes its commitment to user privacy seriously – and being based in Romania means that the VPN isn't required by law to store user logs. However, to really establish itself as a champion of digital security, I'd like to see CyberGhost invite an independent auditing team to comb through its logging policy.

Try for free, or without risks

CyberGhost is compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices, which is pretty standard, but still great news – and the apps themselves are well-designed and easy to use. Installation is a straightforward process, and users get seven simultaneous connections to play with. So, I'd definitely recommend CyberGhost to beginners looking for a simple, user-friendly VPN solution that doesn't necessarily require a ton of extra features.

Of course, if you do run into any difficulties, the CyberGhost customer service team will be able to help you out 24/7 – and they can do it in four languages! A generous 45-day money-back guarantee gives you over a month to put the provider through its paces on your own devices, and you can even try CyberGhost for free for twenty-four hours, thanks to a handy free trial.

Ivacy Demo

Ivacy Demo Ivacy Demo

Ivacy has some of the best VPN apps available on the market today for bargain prices – and all the features you need to gain digital privacy from the US government and data-hungry ISPs.

Access US content any time, any place

There are around 3,500 Ivacy servers dotted across 100 worldwide locations – and that's an impressive feat! Fans of US-specific content will also appreciate that Ivacy has servers in 13 locations in the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Seattle. And, if you're a US citizen who'd rather geo-hop elsewhere to escape the ever-watchful eyes of the NSA, then servers in neighboring Canada and Mexico come in particularly handy.

Ivacy's spread of servers means that you'll be able to access online streams, game servers, internet banking, and any other geo-restricted services from around the world. I also found it incredibly straightforward to use Ivacy alongside Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, and other popular streaming services. Admittedly, this VPN isn’t as fast as some of our other recommendations, but it copes with HD video, videoconferencing, and other data-intensive tasks, making it a great pick for US residents who need to unblock content at home, at work, in school, or on public WiFi.

No logs, no snooping, no worries

Strong OpenVPN encryption keeps prying eyes from snooping on your traffic, or tracking your digital whereabouts, and I also think it's pretty impressive that Ivacy can defend against DDoS attacks! This is especially vital for gamers, who'll also appreciate that the service puts a stop to IPv6 leaks. Additionally, Ivacy's kill-switch will cut your internet connection if it detects a VPN dropout, preventing your original IP address from leaking – which is a vital feature for anyone who wants to stay safe online.

Ivacy makes its home in Singapore, and whilst the country suffers from an incredibly tense political atmosphere, there are no mandatory data retention laws to speak of. As a result, Ivacy can fully abide by its no-logs policy – although I'd prefer if the service had the results of a public audit to prove it definitively. Plenty of VPN alternatives have gone to the trouble of investing in these audits, and whilst they're not infallible, they are a good indication of whether services are honoring their zero-logs claims.

A solid all-rounder

Currently, Ivacy offers ten simultaneous connections, and I think that's more than enough to secure your favorite devices – and to share the love with friends and family if you're feeling generous. Ivacy can be installed on any Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, or Linux device, and is even compatible with routers. The split tunneling feature is a nice bonus, too, particularly if you're a frequent flyer who needs to be able to determine which apps and sites use your original internet connection, and which are routed through the VPN, instead.

Ivacy support is available 24/7 via email, live chat, and ticket, and I've always received fairly speedy answers to my test questions. If you're interested in trying this secure, inexpensive, and easy-to-use service for yourself, be sure to make good use of its 30-day money-back guarantee!

ProtonVPN is a well-known service with a full raft of privacy features, as well as a zero-logs policy. It works like a charm in the US and around the world.

Proton Demo

Proton Demo Proton Demo

ProtonVPN was developed by the same folks who created the ever-popular ProtonMail, and has quickly become one of Reddit users' favorite VPNs. The service provides an array of advanced privacy settles as well as a free plan, making it a versatile option for any US resident.

A wide web of servers

ProtonVPN has over a thousand of servers in 71 countries and owns and manages its entire network. This is great news in terms of privacy, seeing as it cuts out third-party interference, and immediately makes the service an attractive pick to security-minded individuals. In addition, there are 102 ProtonVPN servers in the United States, spread across 14 cities, so catching up on the latest Netflix US releases is as simple as picking your favorite.

And ProtonVPN can unblock more than just Netflix. The service reliably grants access to Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime, to name a few, as well as social media platforms. ProtonVPN might not be the quickest provider in our top ten, but I've always been able to stream in HD without buffering issues – and the service can even keep up with torrenting, gaming, and VoIP calls.

Battle-tested encryption

ProtonVPN is one of a handful of leading services that sets the bar when it comes to VPN security, implementing AES 256-bit encryption and Perfect Forward Secrecy, so your traffic can't be examined and decrypted by any opportunistic snoopers. In addition, users can opt for the OpenVPN, IKEv2, or up-and-coming WireGuard protocols, to tailor their connection to their specific use case. The full list of ProtonVPN privacy features is long and exhaustive, and I especially like the service's kill-switch and Tor over VPN functionality, which give users the opportunity to access Onion sites without worrying about whether their identifiable details will leak if the VPN connection drops.

Being based in Switzerland also means that ProtonVPN benefits from some of the world's strongest privacy laws – and the country is also not a member of the 14 Eyes surveillance network. In addition, ProtonVPN has invited SEC Consult to audit its no-logs claim, which is the sort of transparent action I love to see VPNs taking.

A reliable free service, finally

ProtonVPN has apps available for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices – and Linux users will also be able to install the service. Currently, the provider offers ten simultaneous connections, which is fairly generous, although you can secure an unlimited number of devices by installing ProtonVPN on a VPN-compatible router! All in all, this makes ProtonVPN a stellar pick for folks in the US who need consistent VPN coverage at home, at work, and when traveling domestically or overseas.

Email support is available to all paid users, and whilst it's great to have that option, it's disappointing that there's no live chat alternative. However, it's still well worth using ProtonVPN's 30-day money-back guarantee to get a feel for the service and its array of security features. If you'd rather not part with a penny, and aren't put off by a few limitations, you can always check out ProtonVPN's free plan. This option is subsidized by paid subscribers, so there are no ads to worry about, and should give you a good idea of how the service can safeguard your digital privacy – and its unblocking power!

Which is the fastest VPN for the United States?

At ProPrivacy.com, we check VPN speeds regularly – and you can check out the results in the graph below. Hopefully, this gives you a better idea of how fast our recommended VPNs are.

ExpressVPN NordVPN Private Internet Access
ProPrivacy.com SpeedTest (average) 100 85.9 62.2
Speed 100 568.0 254.93
Performance 10 9 8
Reliability 9 8 8

We conduct our speed tests under lab conditions and use a dedicated gigabit line – so don't expect to get the exact same results. Instead, the table above should give you an idea of which VPNs are performing the fastest right now. If you're looking for fast VPN, simply select the top performer!

Will a VPN improve my internet speeds?

Sadly, no. A VPN has to reroute all of your traffic via the VPN server, in addition to encrypting/decrypting your traffic. As a result, it will actually slow your internet connection down a little. The best VPNs invest in high-quality servers and provide faster speeds, however, so your traffic will only be slowed by a negligible amount. In other words, you'll likely not even notice the slight dip in speeds when you use a quality VPN provider.

Why do I need a VPN in the USA?

With your web browsing history and metadata constantly being monitored, using a VPN is the only way to stop US government agencies, corporations, and advertisers from harvesting your online data.

In addition, US residents will be unable to access geo-restricted content from overseas. And, if you go on vacation, US websites and services will also be subjected to a blackout and rendered inaccessible when you're out of the country. Leaving America shouldn't result in an inability to access your internet banking, unblock Amazon Prime video, or the full US Netflix catalog. Luckily, a VPN for the USA will fix these issues.

That's why our experts have done the hard work for you and searched far and wide for the five very best VPNs for the US market (an impressive feat when you consider that there are over 800 commercial VPNs available!).

All the VPNs we recommend for the US are world-class providers, but they each differ slightly from one another. To ensure you pick the best provider for your needs, you can compare prices, server numbers, connection speeds, and other essential factors in this guide. And, if you need even more details, you can check out our detailed VPN provider reviews.

Also, if you're a newcomer to VPN technology, take a moment to familiarize yourself by reading our helpful guides:

Staying secure with a VPN in the US

In 2013, Edward Snowden revealed that the US government had lied to its citizens about snooping. New legislation has since been passed, permitting US agencies to keep performing mass data surveillance.

Innocent US citizens are constantly monitored not just by the NSA but also by the CIA and other alphabet agencies using the CLOUD Act, the Patriot Act, and various other loopholes (as explained in Jennifer Granick's book American Spies).

Your freedom is destroyed under the auspice of combating terrorism, and your right to privacy is removed. A VPN can combat this, however, and help you take your life back into your own hands, as well as provide security for yourself and your family.

US-based VPN services

The jurisdiction of a VPN is something you should keep in mind when considering any VPN service. Given the widespread surveillance that US citizens and companies are subjected to online, you may begin to question the true effectiveness of VPN providers that are based in the US.

Of all the VPN providers on our USA list, two of them are based in the USA, these are:

  • Private Internet Access, Denver, Colorado
  • IPVanish, Orlando, Florida

The reason we feel comfortable including both of the services on the list is down to the logs they keep, or rather the lack of logs they keep. For both providers, we scrutinized their no-logs claims and found that they don't keep any identifiable logs. And what they don't keep, they can't be forced to hand over when the authorities come knocking.

In fact, Private Internet Access has proven this to be the case, not once, but twice in a court of law. And, IPVanish has opened its service up to StackPath, an independent third-party auditor to verify its no-logs claims, so you don't need to take our word for it.

If you want to learn more about VPN logs, what they are, and how they are used, check out our best VPN no logs guide for more information.

The benefits of getting a USA IP address

Every day, all over the world, people are using VPNs to get a US IP address – which isn't surprising when you consider just how much online content there is on offer to US residents. We look at some of the more common reasons folks are eager to get US IP addresses and appear as though they're in America, below.

More titles on US Netflix

That's right, not all Netflix libraries are created equal, and while some countries get more quality content than others, the US remains the holy grail – if not in terms of quantity, certainly in terms of exclusivity.

There are a number of titles unique to US Netflix that you simply cannot access anywhere else in the world, such as The Queen, Charmed, and The 4400 to name a few.

Unblock Hulu

So far, Hulu is only available in Japan and the US. With no signs of expanding beyond these two countries currently, more people are turning to USA VPNs for Hulu to get their fix of the many exclusive titles they hold the rights to, such as The Handmaid's Tale and Marvel's Runaway.

If these titles aren't available on another streaming service in your country, then getting them on Hulu through a VPN remains one of the most effective ways of watching them online.

If you want to learn more, we have put together a handy guide about unblocking Hulu with a VPN.

Watching American sports

It's no secret that the NFL, NBA, MLB, and many other US sporting leagues are growing in popularity around the world. If you are a keen follower of American football, basketball, baseball, or any other American sport for that matter, it's possible to tune in and watch native coverage from anywhere in the world when you use a VPN to get a US IP address.

Using a VPN for USA, you can unblock sport streaming services like ESPN and catch your favorite teams in action! To find out more, check out our best VPNs for ESPN guide.

Benefits of IP spoofing for US citizens

If you already live in the USA (and have a US IP); you might think you don't need a VPN to get a US IP address.

However, many sports (baseball, football, and basketball) are restricted across state lines – due to blackout games. This can be annoying if you want to watch a game.

With a VPN, you can pretend to be in a different city or state. This allows you to gain access to different TV schedules and bypass MLB or NFL blackout games.

Alternatively, if you are an ex-pat living in the US, or even if you are just visiting the States on holiday, it's possible to access all your home comforts during your stay with the US VPNs we recommend in this guide. So, if you are missing Eastenders and want to watch BBC iPlayer from the US, or you want to unblock Hotstar, you can do so with a VPN.

Is it safe to use a free VPN in the USA?

There are free VPNs on the market, and some of them can be trusted (follow the link for more details). However, if you do use a free VPN, you need to be extremely careful about which one you choose. Many free VPN services make money by collecting user data and selling it to third parties to create a revenue stream. Unfortunately, as keeping a VPN up and running costs a lot of money, this is not a surprise.

There are even a number of VPNs that featured high-up on the Play Store that have been found to contain embedded tracking libraries and spyware. Many of these services have also been caught red-handed lying about the level of encryption they provide. For this reason, and because they don't offer the privacy they claim, they're terrible security risks.

If you want a secure free VPN, you can stick to the ones in our guide and you will be safe. However, those VPNs' free plans are typically burdened with heavy restrictions such as download limits, connection speed restrictions, and limited server options. VPN companies do this to encourage free users to move over to their premium paid service. This is fair, and it is generous – but it means that the free VPN won't nearly be as good as the full-paid subscription.

If you want to use a full premium VPN and all its features without restrictionsthe best way to do so is to use the money-back guarantee. That way, you can put a VPN through its paces and trial all of its functions without risking your cash.

Can I use any VPN to torrent in the US?

No, and this is important – not all VPNs allow torrenting on their servers. If you torrent using a VPN that doesn't allow it, your account could get blocked and the VPN provider has made no promises to protect your data.

There is good news, however. All of the VPNs we've highlighted in this guide allow torrenting, and you can be sure they take every precaution to keep your identity protected.

FAQs

If we haven't covered your question about using a VPN in the USA in the article above – we have you covered in the FAQ section below. However, if anything is still unclear – or if you have any other questions – please don't hesitate to leave us a question at the end of this article.

[[post-object type="accordion" question="Is the internet restricted or censored in the US?" answer="In the US, the right to speak openly online is legally protected by the First Amendment. As a result, the government does not directly censor political or social viewpoints on the internet. That said, the US government does censor certain types of content. ISPs block websites on behalf of the government if they provide access to specific types of illegal content. In some cases, for example, they do this to protect children, to protect intellectual property, or to prevent access to gambling sites in states where they are illegal. Websites or web pages that provide access to pirated content can be served a DMCA notice and must be excluded from search results to make them unavailable. In addition, people with legitimate reasons can exercise the right to be forgotten to have information about themselves excluded from search results. While organizations like Freedom House don’t consider censorship to be a massive problem in the US, it is worth noting that the situation is far from perfect. It is also worth noting that the situation had deteriorated slightly the last time that Freedom House published its Freedom on the Net report. It is also worth noting that a report by the Intercept in 2024 revealed that the US government pressures private companies to remove content deemed to be disinformation. Some companies, such as Facebook, purportedly even provide a special portal for government agents to remove content themselves. This reveals that the government may potentially have the power to block access to information that it doesn’t want people to see; under the guise of national security." /]]

NordVPN is a German based company and Cyberghost is Romania, please don't make it appear they are US Based they are NOT. If you purchase a dedicated IP from both of them, even though the IP shows from the US, it will reverse and appear everywhere from those two countries, even on google search. They are often down with the dedicated IP and their solution is to constantly reinstall software. I highly recommend AGAINST using either, despite pricing.

Hi Derek. NordVPN is based in Panama, but you are correct - this list is intended as best VPNs for the USA, and should not say best USA VPNs. There has obviously been a breakdown of communication within the team. I've now flagged the issue, so hopefully, it will soon get fixed. It's worth noting, though, that thanks to pervasive blanket government surveillance and a very hostile copyright environment, we do generally recommend that people in the US use non-US VPN services.

I'm wondering why you are promoting a US based VPN when the gov't has been more than open about the fact that they demand user data and the company is strictly kept SILENT when the gov't has infected their network. And as an added plus, there isn't a d@mn thing on their website about even ATTEMPTING to maintain your privacy. CREEPY.

Hi Frank, Which VPN are you referring to? ExpressVPN is based in the BVI, CyberGhost in Romania, PrivateVPN in Sweden, and Buffered in Gibraltar. VyprVPN is based in Switzerland, although admittedly its parent company, Golden Frog, is based in the US. We clearly note that VyprVPN keeps extensive connection logs and is therefore mot a good choice for privacy, anyway. It is otherwise an excellent service - just remember that only around half of VPN users use a VPN for privacy...
