Private Internet Access (PIA) is a US VPN provider that keeps zero logs, a claim it has proven in court on multiple occasions. CyberGhost is a fully-featured VPN service that keeps its prices low. With fast speeds and a global network of servers, CyberGhost is will be more than enough for most users. Its simple and easy-to-use app is great for beginners and gives lots of customizability over the VPN itself.

One feature we would like to see from CyberGhost is obfuscation (stealth) technology. This would give extra protection for users in countries with mass sureveillance (such as China). However, users can run TCP over Port 443 for increased privacy. With up to seven simultaneous connections, you can protect your entire household on a single subscription, and with a 45-day money-back you can try their service risk-free!

Will a VPN improve my WoW connection speeds

No, this is a common misconception about VPNs. In most cases, a VPN will actually slow down your connection. However, the ones we recommend have fast tier 1 severs, so the slow down of your connection speeds will not be noticeable.

The reason we say "in most cases" is because we have heard of reports that in some rare cases a VPN can help improve connection speeds. Often this is when your ISP is actively throttling your bandwidth when playing WoW. Some services also claim to be able to optimize the path that your packets take when connected to a WoW server too.

Why Do I need a WoW VPN?

Still not convinced? Below we look at some of the use cases why WoW players might want to consider investing in a VPN.

Unblocking World of Warcraft

There are several reasons why you might need a WoW VPN. People in some countries or regions (some Asian countries, Iran, and Crimea being examples) are blocked from connecting to WoW servers (realms). But, by using a VPN, you can make it look like you are connecting from a location that isn’t blocked from connecting to those realms.

Sometimes you can run into problems, even if your part of the world isn’t blocked. For example, you could find yourself in a hotel or other location that keeps programs from using certain communication ports for security purposes. If World of Warcraft needs those ports, you might as well be in a blocked country. Using a VPN allows you to bypass these problems altogether and enjoy gaming wherever you may be!

A more stable connection (sometimes)

Even if you're connecting to a realm without any problems, a WoW VPN can still have its benefits. Using a VPN can reduce lag and latency in-game (i.e. ping). While this is not a solution for every situation, a VPN can help you stabilize your connection and lets you connect to different regional servers. Connecting to a new server can help you find one that performs better (if you're experiencing issues with local servers).

Keep in mind that, since we're adding another step into your internet traffic, a VPN will inevitably slow down your connection to WoW. This can be for a number of reasons but is mainly because your traffic is being encrypted and routed through a server in a remote location. By choosing a VPN with fast servers, this impact becomes negligible.

Fortunately, the VPNs listed above give excellent server speeds, so you can minimize any impact to your gaming, and keep rest assured that your daily questing is protected by secure encryption.

DDoS protection

One final reason to use a WoW VPN is to protect yourself against hackers and angry gamers. Hackers are constantly trying to get control of World of Warcraft accounts and even snag credit card information. A VPN can keep these creeps at bay. In the world of esports, there are reports of gamers using DDoS attacks to cripple their opponents at crucial moments. Although we have not heard of similar attacks against World of Warcraft players, a VPN will protect you against such attacks if they are ever aimed in your direction.

Will I get banned for using a VPN with WoW?

No, there have been no cases (that we're aware of) of players being banned for connecting to a VPN while they are playing World of Warcraft. In fact, it was common practice to do so for Australian players before they got their own servers in order to improve their ping.

Conclusion

Now that we have covered all that you need to know about using a VPN with WoW, let's review our top picks.

  1. ExpressVPN - The best VPN for WoW overall. It has a super-fast network fo servers all over the world with optimized routing.

Have ExpressVpn already and it does not work trying to connect to World of Warcraft. Wish it did, Living in the Philippines with Globelines as a Isp the best i get is 320ms home and world latency playing wow with my 8mb down 1mb up. Can't get fiber connections as they are only just starting to roll out high speed plans in a couple of cities so its going to be years if ever before they roll out in most cities. Philippines internet is no good.
