Why use a VPN in Thailand?

With a military dictatorship governing Thailand, the country’s laws are designed to exert control over the population. This includes monitoring and restricting citizens' online activities. In addition to this, Thailand revised its Computer-Related Crime Act in 2016 to increase its surveillance powers.

If you live in Thailand or plan to visit Thailand, you might consider using a Thailand virtual private network (VPN) to avoid government surveillance. By using a VPN, you’re able to cover your digital footprints while accessing the uncensored web. Everyone deserves online freedom – including citizens of Thailand.

Thai Elections

The 2019 Thai elections caused the government to crack down on dissenting opinions. Rumors quickly spread that social media could be blacked out, and citizens began looking for ways to gain privacy and accessibility online with a VPN. A VPN is still an important privacy tool even now, though the elections are over. With one, you'll be able to create blog posts and spread dissenting information without concerns you are being tracked by your ISP on behalf of the government.

Trust and Integrity

Our two core values. For the past 5 years our experts & users have reviewed hundreds of VPNs. Our reviews are never influenced by the industry. We sometimes earn affiliate commissions, which contribute to our fight for a free internet. Click here to find out more.

Blocks on adult content

As of November 2024, Thailand's government has begun restricting access to adult content. The government's decision to block pornography has resulted in the censorship of hundreds of websites – and has led to outrage across the country.

Censorship of this kind is unnecessary. It is also extremely easy to bypass with a VPN – which is why it ultimately seems pointless to implement it in the first place. The good news is that any citizens living in Thailand can unblock Pornhub (or any other adult) service with a VPN.

And, although we admit that requiring a VPN to access adult content is frustrating (and rather ludicrous), the one advantage of using a VPN is that you will get added privacy. This will prevent your ISP from tracking any adult content you access.

VPN for Thailand Restrictions

The Thai government started restricting internet access before the military coup in 2006. Most bans focused on websites that contained pornography and other adult themes. However, Thailand also strongly influences the press to ensure there is no criticism of the monarchy.

After the second military coup in 2014, the governing inner circle has slowly expanded press regulations to include the removal of anything critical of its own actions. In addition, it has also broadened its sanctions on bloggers, news outlets, social media posts - and even the content of live chat comments.

Using Voice Chat with a VPN for Thailand

As such, it’s no secret that censorship in Thailand is spiraling out of control. If you live in Thailand, or if you intend to visit, you're going to need to be careful about what you post online. Your texts, videos, and voice chat services will all need protecting from government surveillance attempts.

Consider this: Thai authorities can tap and record mobile phones if they’re under Thai jurisdiction. For example, the most popular voice chat system in Thailand is the smartphone app Line – with over 33 million Thai users. The Thai government has made claims saying they can crack it.

This is why you should consider using a protected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) connection on top of a VPN. By adding this extra measure of protection, you’re offered much more security than your local SIM card can provide.

Streaming With a VPN for Thailand

While foreign media streaming sites are not blocked in Thailand, Thailand citizens are limited to Thailand content only. This means that, despite being able to log into your Netflix account, you cannot access anything other than your country specific library.

This is due to copyright restrictions. In order to add content to their websites, streaming services like Netflix and Hulu must first buy the right to the content. If the company they purchase the content from wants to limit viewer access to a certain country, the streaming services legally have to abide to their demands.

Fortunately, you can spoof your location and access country-specific libraries by using one of our recommended Thailand VPNs.

Using a VPN to Access Blocked Content in Thailand

The best solution to sidestepping the internet restrictions and surveillance of the Thai government is to install a VPN. This privacy measure will encrypt all of your communications. In addition, it also masks the true destination of your connections as they pass through your ISP’s servers.

By using a VPN, you’re able to mask the origin of a request for a service. In other words: streaming servers can be fooled into thinking you’re in their country – giving you the ability to access their content. Furthermore, using a VPN can also help you access other websites besides video streaming services.

For example, you can browse adult websites without worry of censorship. You can read whatever blogs you want – you can speak your mind – you can finally enjoy a truly open internet. By using a Thailand VPN, you’re exercising your right to the freedom that you deserve.

Thai VPN Blocks

Unfortunately, there is a downside to using a Thailand VPN. Not all services actually work in the country, and a study conducted by the Open Observatory of Network Interference previously revealed that Thailand's authorities block some VPN websites.

Although only a few VPNs were tested, it is possible that the government will block other VPN websites, which could make subscribing to a VPN tricky. According to the study, ISPs were blocking the websites of  hotspotshield.com, anonymous.org and ultasurf.net.

The good news is that VPNs still remain popular in Thailand and it is not illegal to use those services. However, if you are going to be traveling to Thailand, it is probably better to get a VPN subscription before you set off, as this will ensure you already have it installed and ready to use.

The best option, however, is to use one of our recommended VPNs; which aren't currently blocked by Thai authorities. That will ensure that you can access the VPN's website and customer support while you are in Thailand. All the VPNs listed in our Top 5 guide are not only unblocked, but highly recommended by our team at ProPrivacy.com.

Securing Data via Thailand VPN

By using a Thailand VPN, you’re concealing the true destination of your traffic. This security measure prevents ISPs from reporting on which sites you connect to. By encrypting all communication, you’re able to avoid government or ISP implemented monitoring programs that invade your privacy by observing the files you’re downloading and the video streams you’re accessing.

When you’re running a VPN client, you’re forcing your system to only accept incoming messages from the connected VPN server as opposed to the mediating server it usually goes through. In other words: you and your data are provided anonymity and security. When you use a Thailand VPN, you don’t have to worry about third parties compromising your data.

VPNs exist in order to provide privacy and anonymity to their users. While some countries like Thailand have hefty privacy laws, anonymity is not illegal. Thus, using a VPN in Thailand is not illegal. If you’re looking to put your trust in a VPN provider, you can do so with ease.

On the other hand, please note that, while VPNs might be legal in Thailand, using a VPN for illegal activities is not legal (anywhere). Always proceed with caution.

Using a Mobile VPN in Thailand

A lot of factors can influence your decision when it comes to choosing a Thailand VPN for your mobile device; VPN speed, server locations, security implementations and privacy/log policies. Be sure to select the mobile VPN provider that best suits your needs.

Android

You can install a VPN on your Android device using a couple different methods. The first method is the easiest one – navigate to the app store and download your desired VPN app. The second method, as mentioned above, is installing a VPN using an APK file:

How to install a VPN using an APK file

  1. Make sure you’ve allowed non-Play Store downloads to your device
  2. Navigate to the VPN website
  3. Download the APK file to your Android device
  4. Select OK to begin download
  5. After the APK is done downloading, tap OPEN
  6. Give permissions to the app by selecting INSTALL
  7. After installation is complete, select OPEN
  8. Your VPN will open!

Check out our best VPN for Android or iOS VPN guides for more information about using a VPN on your smartphone.

iOS

Installing a VPN on your iOS device is as easy as going to the app store, searching for your desired VPN and then installing it. For more information on the best iOS VPN apps, read our Best iPhone VPNs guide.

Choosing a Thailand VPN Server

It's a good idea to run a few different speed tests when choosing a Thailand VPN server. By comparing the results, you'll be able to see which server has the best performance. In addition, it’s beneficial to choose a VPN provider that offers a large variety of servers and server locations.

Best Thailand VPN Servers for Connectivity

If you’re searching for the best Thailand VPN server to connect to, you will want to consider a few different things. First off, find a VPN that provides you with a multitude of different server locations – several of which reside in Thailand. In addition, you should also choose a VPN that offers unlimited server switching.

Thailand VPN: Conclusion

Standing up to censorship and the lack of online privacy in Thailand is important. It’s your right as a human being to exercise freedom – including digital freedom. By using a Thailand VPN, you’re not only standing up for your right to privacy and freedom, but you’re doing it in a secure setting.

The VPNs listed in this top 5 guide are successful in what they do, namely evading the surveillance of Thai authorities. In addition, each VPN provides their own DNS servers and offers military-grade encryption with strong security features included. You no longer have to worry about authorities or a third party compromising your online activities.

The Thai government continues to push for intense internet surveillance. It’s time to push back with one of our Thailand VPNs.

I am trying to use Express VPN here in Thailand - The last few months it is so slow, especially in the evenings that it's impossible to stream TV. I have used Express Help repeatedly, very nice people but Express is completely useless. I want to stream BBC television. Please advise.

Hi Andrea, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and PrivateVPN all run servers out of Thailand. I'm fairly IPVanish does too, but its website seems to be having downtime as I write this so I can't check.

Hi, I wonder why Nordvpn is not in this list? I saw that they got a 9.8 from you, but I don't see them in this list or other top 5 lists on this site. I'm not defending them, I just wonder why? I live in Thailand and I am using Nordvpn. Many servers especially in Singapore (other countries aren't working good for me). Speeds are most of the time acceptable. Only last days in the evening they seem to have a little problem. But they'll solve it. I sometimes had speed problems too with other vpn providers I've used. Now they give free internet in the villages. First thing that came up my mind was that this is an excellent instrument to find out what people are thinking. But because of that they upgraded my internet subscription for the same price, meaning faster internet. Thanks for all the research and articles.

Hi Sven, NordVPN asked us to remove it from our lists while we renegotiate how to create a revenue stream with it. As you probably know, we do run on an affiliate system. The beauty of being the most established VPN review company is that we don’t need to be biased when we recommend VPNs. All VPNs are willing to pay us affiliate fees, which means that we can be truthful about which VPNs we recommend. We do not, however, have the power to keep adding a VPN to lists if they ask us not to put them on our lists: which is the slightly bizarre situation we are in at the moment. However, this is probably only temporary and we are still in discussions with NordVPN.
